Earlier last month, we caught a glimpse of things to come with LEGO’s action-packed, Monkie Kid-themed sets. The Legend of the Monkey King continues in its brick-filled glory, in five new and aesthetically impressive LEGO Monkie Kid 2023 sets, featuring its largest mech build ever.
The LEGO Monkie Kid theme is still going strong since its inception 4 years ago. And with a colorful story based on the mythical story of The Journey to the West, this impressive line of LEGO sets has drawn a lot of fans and collectors.

Get kids aged 10 and up excited about classic legends with this brick-built LEGO® Monkie Kid™ Monkey King Ultra Mech (80045). As you may have noticed, LEGO is now announcing sets coming this 2022, left and right. The reveals range across all popular themes and licensed IPs, as well as size. From sprawling city skylines to towering sci-fantasy rockets to adorable BrickHeadz, the January 1 launch window’s pretty packed. That goes also for the extremely small end of the LEGO set spectrum. Beyond a new LEGO Star Wars Microfighter we’ll also be seeing a selection of polybags. Granted, this particular LEGO reveal is sparsely detailed in comparison. We have no idea if the polybags are purchasable as is or GWPs instead, and when they’ll even appear.
While the following next-year LEGO polybags haven’t even got a LEGO.com listing, we at least know how they look now. Particularly noteworthy is the Technic polybag. Early in November the UK-published “LEGO Giant Series” Technic Mag featured a polybag in the cover. Their product numbers are even close enough by a few tens. Apparently they’d be the first Technic polybags to come out since the last ones in 2000. Sounds like it’s certainly worth collecting, along with the rest, as covered by The Brick Fan:
The key concept of LEGO has always been that, with any given number of bricks, one can build anything. True, most packaged LEGO sets are to build a specific building/vehicle/etc. They even have instruction manuals so that builders can assemble the pieces exactly as pictured. But ultimately, building with LEGO bricks can be one of the best outlets for creative freedom. LEGO Japan two Saturdays ago demonstrated that fact in partnership with Amazon Japan. The results of that promotional activity on social media would grab attention and ignite builder creativity.
Brick Fanatics brings us this interesting social media activity made possible by the Japanese divisions of LEGO and Amazon. The challenge: How would you combine two different LEGO set builds into a unified creation? LEGO JP’s original Twitter post (November 13, 2021) even provides an example.
The “Before” photo showcases the completed LEGO Technic Off-Road Buggy (42124) and LEGO Monkie Kid Lion Guardian (80021). The real Japanese essence of this LEGO-Amazon team-up lies in this particular build. LEGO Ideas Tree House (21318) plus Botanical Collection Bonsai Tree (10281) equals Sakura Tree House. The featured LEGO sets are mostly available on Amazon.jp, or you can just go LEGO.com. They’re very inspiring fusions, right?
Monkie Kid has got to be one of the best new theme lines introduced by LEGO in recent years. A new adventure spun off from the classic Chinese novel that isn’t “Dragon Ball” all but guarantees popularity in Asia. Not for nothing does the animated series tie-in boast multiple Asian-language dubs. Aside from Japanese and Korean, “LEGO Monkie Kid” has a Cantonese dub and two for Mandarin. While the theme and show have a growing global fan-base, Asia looks to be its main stomping grounds. That would explain why the under-construction LEGOLAND Shanghai has plans for a Monkie Kid area.
First announced this past November 6, LEGOLAND Shanghai is one of three LEGOLAND resorts planned in China. Merlin Entertainments, LEGOLAND’s owner-operator, announced the start of construction on their official website. Soon to rise from Jinshan, LEGOLAND Shanghai has the honor of getting the first Monkie Kid themed area. As expected of the source material, this zone will feature Chinese architectural styles and natural landscaping. Through the LEGO Monkie Kid’ fun medium, young visitors to LEGOLAND Shanghai could also connect to their Chinese heritage. We may well expect attractions and walk-around cast featuring MK and his friends, plus their many antagonists.
The groundbreaking ceremony of LEGOLAND Shanghai involved the unveiling of a giant LEGO brick. This monument represents the symbolic first building block in the construction of the new resort. Merlin Entertainments CEO Nick Varney and LEGO Executive Chairman Jorgen Vig Knudstorp were VIPs alongside Shanghai’s Deputy Mayor. LEGOLAND Shanghai plans to open sometime in 2024. LEGO Monkie Kid on the other hand is promised to release new sets next year. Its animated adaptation should also have a third season underway.
For fans of LEGO action themes wanting more variety outside Ninjago, Monkie Kid was a breath of fresh air. A fantasy-futuristic take on Journey to the West isn’t new; anime fans have Dragon Ball for starters. But an action-packed, super fun series rendered in LEGO and animated in 2D? LEGO had a winning recipe with this. Both the sets and the animated series generated massive hype, as had the announcement that the theme will continue. As an affirmation of this, LEGO showed the new LEGO Monkie Kid Galactic Explorer (80035) set at the Chinese International Import Expo. Some videogame content was revealed elsewhere as well.
The LEGO Monkie Kid Galactic Explorer (80035) features a gloriously red space rocket accentuated by the theme’s familiar aesthetics. As for its minifigs, Monkie Kid looks to be teamed with Mei, Tang, Sandy, and his cat Mo. They appear to be fighting the Monkey King’s rival, Macaque, who has used his cloning magic (explaining two Macaques in this set). We’re not sure yet if this set ties into the planned third season of the Monkie Kid animated series, but I’m sure will find out pretty soon.
Meanwhile, Brick Fanaticshas it that Apple Arcade’s LEGO Brawls is getting some Monkie Kid content. As can be seen in the trailer above, not only do MK and his friends join the roster. The platform-fighter mobile game developed by Red Games Co. will also be getting a new stage: Flower Fruit Mountain. “LEGO Brawls” gives a gorgeous adaptation of the LEGO Monkie Kid set (80024). The LMK stuff is now available on that title, playable on Apple Arcade with a monthly subscription. LEGO Monkie Kid is, indeed, continuing strongly.
For general LEGO collectors, it’s always sobering when one hears news that a LEGO theme is potentially being ended. Usually they announce the retirement of all currently-available sets in the line, without word of upcoming new stuff. Then again, The LEGO Group is a business. If they think a theme must discontinue for reasons, it will. Recently this fate seemed in store for LEGO Speed Champions, Technic, and even 2020-debut Monkie Kid. The latter saw all its current sets earmarked for retirement on December 31. But a top LEGO figure assures that it, and many other themes, will continue.
Brick Fanatics bring us this hopeful bit of news. Over the weekend, LEGO VP of Design Matthew Ashton held a social media Q&A on Instagram. LEGO fans and collectors among his followers were quick to ask him about the status of certain themes. LEGO Monkie kid among others are getting follow-ups next year, to fans’ relief. Not just Monkie Kid, but also Technic, Speed Champions, DOTS and others will have 2022 and 2023 releases. Then again, for Monkie Kid, having a streaming deal with Amazon might have had an indirect effect.
More Monkie Kid
LEGO Monkie Kid’s animated adaptation has been airing in Asian countries and Australia since 2020. After joining Amazon Kids+ this month, the series gets an international streaming audience for the first time. Its season 2 ended in a cliffhanger that hinted at concluding the series in season 3. This coincided with the announcement of all its sets retiring at year’s end.
Thanks to Ashton’s Q&A, we can be assured that LEGO Monkie Kid will see more product releases and animated seasons. Interestingly, LEGO’s other Asian-inspired theme, Ninjago, went through the same deal. Introduced in 2011 and slated to run only three years before discontinuation, the theme and animation have lasted eleven. If collectors keep buying and viewers keep watching, we’re sure to get more Monkie Kid too.
LEGO has rolled out new LEGO Monkie Kid summer 2021 sets via its online shopping portal, giving us a closer look at these three cool builds featuring one of the series new antagonists the Lady Bone Demon.
These offerings are based on Season 2 of the animated series and feature some pretty interesting play features. I like how colorful and varied the interior of Pigsy’s Noodle Tank turned out, and the combining features of the Bone Demon.
