Official Box Art Images of LEGO Marvel Superheroes Spider-Man: Homecoming Sets Revealed!

We first saw them back in February during the New York Toy Fair, but even then, LEGO was a little shy in showing all of its wares as far as being cautious about showing too much on what’s next for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After the reveal of this year’s first MCU-related LEGO set with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, we now have our first look at the official box art images for Spider-Man: Homecoming. If you recall, LEGO was still keeping a particular set – or a minifig to be exact – under wraps probably for reasons that it may become too much of a spoiler. However, thanks to images posted by Brick Heroes, we now have a look at the mystery minifigure that comes along with LEGO Marvel Superheroes Beware the Vulture (76083).  Included also in this reveal are official images of the ATM Heist Battle (76082). Check these out.

As we can see, the not-so-surprising minifig in this set is none other than the Shocker. Played by actor Bokeem Woodbine, Herman Schultz or more commonly known as Shocker to Marvel fans, is one of the film’s hardcore criminals. Equipped with a tech suit that allows him to send lethal shock waves towards anyone who comes in his way, he has proven himself to be a formidable foe against the web slinger in the comics, and together with the Vulture, will probably give Spidey a really hard time throughout the film. Frankly, I hardly see this set as a spoiler and his minifig version does not offer too much of a hint either, save for his shocker-gauntlet thing. The main selling point of the Beware the Vulture set is definitely the Vulture minifig itself, with its brick-built flight suit. I really do hope that the Vulture’s minifig can be posed together with his suit, but considering the overall weight of all those bricks (I like how the designers used the modified gray tiles by the way), I find it difficult to imagine how.

The ATM Heist Battle set on the other hand is relatively small, considering the piece count being at 185 pieces only. However, same as the Beware the Vulture set, I believe that what makes 76082 attractive are the minifigures of the bank robbers that goes along with it. They both come with dual printed heads that shows regular bad guy expressions, and their masked versions as well that takes a hint from the Hulk and Captain America. Both sets also offer newer versions of Spider-Man equipped with the new Power Blast minifig feature.

Spider-Man: Homecoming will swing into US theaters on July 7. But before that, be sure to see first the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 next month, on May 5. The last MCU film of this year is Thor: Ragnarok, which LEGO has dedicated two sets as well.

LEGO Ninjago Movie Books Revealed – More Details on our Ninjas, Garmadon, and a Stash of Cool Sets.

Amazon UK has recently posted several books dedicated to the upcoming LEGO Ninjago Movie. This collection of books (a sticker collection, and two readers) reveals interesting, high-resolution details on how we can expect the minifigures may look like, together with some of the mechs and vehicles that we want to see as an actual LNM set. I am not really an over-the-top Ninjago fan, but seeing the details on these LNM characters and vehicle designs, makes me more excited to see the actual sets.

Other than the exquisitely detailed minifigures of our young Ninjas, what I find equally impressive are the host of Garmadon’s marine-costumed henchmen. Aptly named to strike terror in the hearts of men (or minifigs), Garmadon’s Shark Army features several baddies donned in various sea creature outfits – a hammerhead, great white, puffer fish, octopus, and a jelly fish-like bubble head gear – all armed with melee and long range weapons such as fish nunchuks, starfish shurikens and fish launchers (hate to be on the way of those smelly weapons).

Their vehicles are awesome in themselves, especially Garmadon’s dark and menacing mech.

What I appreciate most about the LEGO Ninjago Movie are the highly detailed sets that were featured in its first official trailer. Though these sets look great on film and is most likely to be trimmed down a bit once offered to the general public as an actual LNM set, such down-scaling does not significantly reduce the impressive details on them. Two of these were partially revealed during LEGO Rebrick’s latest contest: the Green Ninja Mech Dragon (70612) and the Kai’s Fire Mech (70615), and this time we get to see another yet to be named tank-like battle vehicle which you can see below.

As we noted before, each of our young heroes also gets a makeover, with new costumes and hairpieces that complements their progress as a ninja and their coming of age.

These LEGO Ninjago Movie DK books are expected to hit store shelves in the UK on September, and August in the US. The LEGO Ninjago Movie will swing into action in theaters on September 22.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 as Told In LEGO.

The final trailer for the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is finally out, and with less than a month before before we see the  galaxy’s rowdiest, mix-tape rockin’ superhero team of Marvel’s Cinematic Universe, Huxley Berg Studios decided to add a little LEGO fun to the band’s (misadventures) by retelling the entire final trailer using LEGO minifigs and bricks. The minifigs are so much impressive in themselves I can’t help but wish to have all them. Watch this.

MCU’s Guardian’s of the Galaxy Vol. 2 comes gate-crashin’ in theaters on May 5. LEGO has dedicated three sets under this Marvel Superheroes subtheme which you can find below. Click on the links to know more.

The Freemaker Family Prepares For Another Season in LEGO Star Wars: The Freemaker Adventures.

It doesn’t come as a surprise that the galaxy’s freewheeling, Freemaker family is back for another round of intergalactic adventures in Season 2 of LEGO Star Wars: The Freemaker Adventures. Seeing two of the recent LEGO Star Wars sets dedicated to the animated series – the Arrowhead (75186) and Tracker 1 (75185) – we’re very much positive that the new series will be a sure hit, especially that they have found their way to the Rebel Alliance. We get to see the Arrowhead in action, and the Emperor’s newest minion aptly named as M-OC.

S2 Freemakers

At the end of the first season, the Freemaker family found a new home with the rebel fleet. Their new circumstances bring them face to face with brutal Imperial forces, desperate Hutts, conniving Sith Lords, and the Emperor’s latest plaything, M-OC, a terrifying hunter droid who continually modifies himself to fit any occasion. In response to these threats, Rowan’s powers grow and strengthen until he has a vision of a sleek, invulnerable ship that can save the Rebellion and stop the Empire in its tracks – the Arrowhead. The catch is, the Arrowhead is a ship only Rowan can build. Once again, it’s up to the youngest Freemaker to save the galaxy.

LEGO Star Wars: The Freemaker Adventures Season 2 will launch this summer on Disney XD, just in time for the release of the LEGO Star Wars Arrowhead (75186) and Tracker 1 (75185), both of which will be available on June 1.

What’s Next For LEGO Ideas?

As a fan of the LEGO Ideas platform, it delights me to see how my favorite projects can get to see the light of day to become a possible LEGO set that I can actually pick up straight from the shelves of my local LEGO Store. Being a fan-based site in itself, the team behind LEGO Ideas has to carefully consider many factors before giving a project a ‘go’ or ‘no-go’ decision. Putting in mind what the fans want, the LEGO Ideas Review Team must keep tabs with other factors such as the size of the set, its viable cost in the market, and of course, the licensing issues involved. Perhaps amongst these, it is the licensing issues that are the most challenging to untangle.

21308 alt1
LEGO became stronger as a brand because of its tie-up with other third-party brands and licenses.

The LEGO Ideas Review Team must put into account both the intellectual property (IP) issues outside and within LEGO’s portfolio. Needless to say, it is a very delicate dance to say the least in trying to work out the IP conflicts that may arise in developing a new LEGO set. A LEGO Ideas project that gained the necessary 10K votes may therefore receive a thumbs up sign from the majority of the LEGO fan community, but will still fail to become a set if there are conflicts with certain active licenses or themes.

Marvel logo  800px Lego Ninjago logo.svg

This week, the LEGO Ideas Team has just announced a major revision on their project submission guidelines stating that submissions based on third-party licenses that are deemed active in TLG’s portfolio will no longer be accepted. This means that if you’re planning to submit a project that is based on Star Wars, Marvel or DC Superheroes, Disney characters, or any theme that is currently developed by LEGO, then this project will be turned down right away. We’re not sure if this means that it will not even have the chance of being posted on the site to rally for support, but what is sure is that it will absolutely fail to become an official LEGO set.

According to Tim Courtney of LEGO Ideas,

Today we’ve updated our Guidelines and House Rules to clarify the types of models we will accept as LEGO® Ideas projects. The main focus of this update is that we will no longer allow projects that are based on currently active licenses in our product portfolio, like Star Wars, MARVEL Super Heroes, Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz, and so on.

We’ve updated our Guidelines about licensed properties to reflect this, and added a list of restricted licensed properties to the License Conflicts and Resolutions page in the Knowledge Base. If we retire a third-party license and it didn’t enter the LEGO portfolio via LEGO Ideas we’ll remove it from our list, and you’ll then be welcome to submit projects based on it.

For clarity, LEGO Ideas list down all of the Active Licenses and other Restricted IPs based from previous LEGO Ideas sets, which you can find below:

Entertainment

Star Wars, MARVEL Super Heroes, DC Super Heroes & Super Hero Girls, The LEGO Batman Movie, The LEGO NINJAGO Movie, The LEGO Movie, Disney characters (Mickey Mouse, Minnie, Donald Duck, Daisy Duck, Goofy & Tinker Bell), Moana, Rapunzel, Aladdin, Cars, Whisker Haven Tales with the Palace Pets , Angry Birds, Pirates of the Caribbean, Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella, Miles From Tomorrowland, Doc McStuffins, Sofia the First, The Simpsons, Knight Rider, Mission Impossible, Midway Arcade, Lord of the Rings, Gremlins, A-Team, Harry Potter, Fantastic Beasts, Sonic the Hedgehog, Portal 2, E.T. & The Wizard of Oz.

Automotive brands

Volkswagen, Ferrari, MINI, Porsche, BMW, CLAAS, Volvo, Mercedes, Ford, Audi, Bugatti, Chevrolet & McLaren.

Architecture

  • Stand alone buildings (Big Ben, London Tower Bridge, US Capitol Building, Louvre, Buckingham Palace, Burj Khalifa, Eiffel Tower & Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum).
  • Buildings contained in the skylines (London, Sydney, Chicago, Venice, Berlin & New York).

Restricted IP from LEGO Ideas:

  • Shinkai 6500
  • Hayabusa
  • Minecraft
  • Back to the Future
  • Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity Rover
  • Ghostbusters
  • The Big Bang Theory
  • WALL•E
  • Doctor Who
  • The Beatles
  • Caterham
  • Adventure Time
  • Apollo program
  • Women of NASA concept

That’s a pretty long list. Good thing though (if you can still look at it that way) that LEGO gives an assurance that if ever a licensing issue has been resolved, or if an active, third-party license has been retired already, then fans are free to submit similar projects later on. Furthermore, this doesn’t mean that active projects that have currently reached 10K support, or even those that are still gathering support will be shot down right away. They will have the chance of being promoted in the LEGO Ideas platform, but will have a slimmer chance of passing through the Review Stage.

Projects currently being reviewed, as well as active projects that reach 10,000 supporters in the future, will still be evaluated as part of the LEGO Review. Just like before, these projects would have a slimmer chance of passing the LEGO Ideas review, as they overlap with existing licenses in the LEGO product portfolio.

This means that entries such as the UCS Rey’s Speeder, the Volkswagen Golf MK1 GTI, and the Hulkbuster UCS may never stand a chance against other, non-licensed entries. Additionally, submissions that are based on any existing official LEGO Ideas set, whether active or retired, will no longer be allowed as well.

UCS Reys Speeder   VW MTK UCS Hulkbuster

This decision from the LEGO Ideas Team received a lot of mixed reactions from the LEGO community. Some argue that such move severely limits the projects that fans really want to see, while on the other hand, it is considered by some as a wise, and practical decision (from LEGO’s viewpoint, I guess) so as not to put our hopes up on something that can never happen in the first place.

I think only time can tell if these changes in the LEGO Ideas platform will work out for the better. As of now, I’m excited to see how the final LEGO Ideas Apollo II Saturn V set turn out, and if my favorite LEGO Ideas project, Voltron Defender of the Universe, will finally become an official set.

So what do you think about this change in LEGO Ideas? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

LEGO Teases On The Arrival of Its Most Complex Ideas Set – The LEGO Apollo 11 Saturn V.

At the start of this month, LEGO gave us a teaser on what to expect from its second upcoming LEGO Ideas set for 2017. Based on NASA’s iconic Apollo 11, the next Ideas set slated for release this June is said to be the largest, most complex build that the Ideas Review Team has ever designed. The partial image alone gives us a hint on the sheer size of this build. According to Hasan Jensen,

Apollo 11 Saturn V
LEGO designers, Carl and Mike, have been hard at work on what is the most complex LEGO Ideas set we’ve ever approved! We’ve finalised the model design but there’s still plenty to do before this rocket is ready for lift-off!

lego ideas saturnv 2 5

Earlier today, LEGO gives another clue via its Twitter page on what we could further expect from Ideas fan designer Felix Stiessen (aka saabfan) and his LEGO Ideas Apollo 11 Saturn V set. In this image, we see a portion of a brick-built Lunar Lander in a gray and gold color scheme that has just landed on the lunar surface. We also get to see a silhouette of an astronaut minifigure – borrowing heavily from Neil Armstrong’s words – ready to make that one small step for LEGO bricks.

If you recall, the original project submitted by Felix Stiessen shows the whole LEGO Apollo II to about 1 meter high and made up of 1,179 bricks. It also packs a ton of play feature since the set is meant to be modular in a sense because of its detachable rocket stages, including the Apollo spacecraft itself, the Lunar Lander and Lunar Orbiter.

ideas apollo 11 lego ideas saturnv 2 3 lego ideas saturnv 2 2 lego ideas saturnv 2 4 lego ideas saturnv 2 1

After some revisions done by the LEGO Ideas Design Team, and considering what LEGO teases about the set’s final version, then we can confidently say that this may perhaps, be the biggest Ideas set that the LEGO designers team have come up with. LEGO promises to give more updates on this exciting set, so stay tuned.

r2 lego store calendar may 2017 1

The highly sought after buildable R2-D2 polybag set is the Star Wars promotional highlight for next month, in line with the movie franchise’s 40th anniversary. A healthy amount of interest surrounded the most popular droid on the planet, especially now that he comes as a sought after, brick-built collectible. For me, it is a better deal as compared to previous years’ SW minifigure promotional. It is also wise to assume that this polybag set will go out fast because of the very limited window of opportunity in which it will be offered.

To spice things up, LEGO is throwing in another round of Double VIP points throughout the week on ALL LEGO Star Wars sets, plus discounts on selected ones. On a side note, the UCS Snowspeeder is not included on the list of sale items. However, if you’re holding back on your purchase of the Battle of Scariff (75171) and Y-Wing Starfighter (75172), next month is the best time to get them since both sets will earn you 50 bonus VIP points if you purchase them in May.

May 4: Special Star Wars Events in Stores!

Throughout the whole day, children ages 6-14 may visit any LEGO Store dressed up in their favorite Star Wars character and join in the Search & Find activity where participants can receive a pair of collectible Yoda ears (not sure how it will look like though, maybe a cap of some sorts?). In the afternoon at 5PM, participants will also get a chance to participate in a minifigure speed build challenge where the fastest builder will receive a free minifigure. Participation in the minifig speed build challenge may require registration so be sure to ask a Brick Specialist.

May 8 to 21: Free Mini Milano With Purchases of $35 or More!

Right after the buildable R2-D2 promotional, comes the FREE LEGO Marvel Supeheroes GOTG Vol. 2 Milano (30499) polybag. Though this polybag set will be available for a longer promotional period as compared to R2, better expect this one to fly out of the shelves quickly as well.

Whole Month of May: Receive a Special Star Wars passport stamp when you download the LEGO Life App.

April 24 to June 25: Help the Rebel Alliance Build a Base Camp.

May 13 and 14: Mother’s Day Weekend Building Event.

On Mother’s Day, come in and build a spring inspired Tulip (40039) mini build that you get to take home for FREE. This event is for VIP members and intended for ages 6 to 14 years old. Registration is required so be sure to inquire at your nearest LEGO Store.

Interestingly, the LEGO Store May Calendar also gives us a peek at some LEGO Duplo sets (Flo’s Café 10846 and Thunder Hollow Crazy 8 Race 10744) dedicated to Disney’s Cars 3, just before it debuts in cinemas in August. Starting May, several Minecraft, Elves, Star Wars, and Marvel Superheroes sets will also be available so be sure to check them out.
