LEGO DOTS To End in June 2023

Advertisements

In case you missed it, LEGO has decided to pull the plug on one of its relatively younger themes. As announced last week, the LEGO Group will discontinue the LEGO DOTS theme effective June this year.

The LEGO DOTS Ultimate Party Kit (41806) released this year.

This early retirement of LEGO DOTS may have been spurred by its below-average performance in the market. Since its inception in 2020, the theme has managed to develop its portfolio of more than 70 sets throughout its four-year stint.

Frankly, the news came as a surprise, considering LEGO just recently announced its Q1 2023 line-up of new LEGO DOTS sets. But as it seems, underperforming themes are eventually retired, and it’s a business decision that LEGO has to make, unfortunately.

Here’s the official statement from the LEGO Group.

Dear all,

After careful consideration, we have decided to exit the LEGO DOTS theme and integrate tile-based play into other themes within our portfolio.

January and March launches of LEGO DOTS novelties will go ahead but also be our last on this theme, with all current items from 2022 remaining active in the product line up until the end of the year.

LEGO DOTS was launched in March 2020 with the ambition to connect with kids through their passion for arts & crafts – looking at encouraging self-expression and to attract new builders to the LEGO brand. It was a completely new style of building which used brightly coloured tiles to ignite creativity with LEGO fans, in a fun and unique way.

Whilst seeing great appetite for this type of proposition and playing a key role in retaining kids in the LEGO brand, we also recognise the challenges of establishing LEGO DOTS as a long-term brand in the arts & crafts category.

We will refocus our attention on ensuring elements of tile-play live on across other areas of the business. We know there is still a huge appeal from the arts & craft community, and we want to ensure there are opportunities for kids who love the play proposition to still enjoy building in this way. We can also confirm this discontinuation will not affect our business direction on similar themes like LEGO Art and we look forward to more exciting launches in the future.

We want to thank all our LEGO DOTS fans who inspired us with their creativity!

I guess LEGO will be capitalizing on the LEGO DOTS imminent retirement as it is still expected to release its March wave of sets inspired by the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. But after that, the curtains will eventually fall on this beloved theme.

So while counting the months before we see the end of LEGO DOTS, you may want to check out which sets turned out to be popular and enjoyed by the LEGO community. Here is our top 15 list of most wanted LEGO DOTS sets (in descending order) based on data shared Brickset data. Please take note that these are affiliate links. So just in case you want to purchase these sets through these links, we also get to receive a small portion of its purchase. It’s a great way to show support for what we do here in the blog.

End-2021 “Retiring Soon” Sets Revealed on LEGO Shop@Home US

Advertisements

The end of any given year marks the traditional date of retirement for LEGO sets. As you know, the old products must make way for new releases after all. Some LEGO product retirements vary from market to market too, so there’s that to consider. Last mid-September Shop@Home UK began listing up their retiring products. The Brick Fan now has the heads-up on LEGO sets also marked for retirement on Shop@Home US. There are some similarities to the earlier UK list, but there are others also. We’re doing a mini-list of the 2021 retiring sets for Shop@Home US. If they got featured here on The Brick Show, we’ll add the articles.

LEGO Shop@Home UK Marks Sets “Retiring Soon” by End of 2021

Advertisements

Even as several LEGO themes were assured of continuing into next year by the company’s VP for design over the weekend, that doesn’t mean specific individual sets will go on. That’s how it’s always been. LEGO can’t keep making the same stuff so old products must retire to make way for new offerings.

There were some LEGO set retirements announced in August. Earlier this week, LEGO Shop@Home UK updated their listings to indicate their sets retiring possibly by year’s end. As confirmed on their site, five LEGO Creator Expert sets and one each from LEGO Star Wars and LEGO Stranger things will be going bye-bye when 2021 concludes. Here they are, courtesy of The Brick Fan. We’ve listed them by year of release, with our Brick Show feature articles and their Shop@Home UK listings:

2018
2019
2020

So far their Shop@Home US counterpart listings are still available (some are marked Hard to Find though). Hopefully they won’t be changing to “Retiring Soon” as well.

As LEGO began to roll out its wave of new sets this 2nd half of 2021, it is also expected that the company will begin clearing out from its shelves (both from its physical stores and online) several of its previous sets that are expected to reach its end of life very soon. Retiring LEGO sets are almost always of particular interest to the LEGO fan community, considering that most of us still have that one set that we are looking forward to ticking out from our LEGO must-have bucket list. And recently, Stone Wars have released a very comprehensive list of all the retiring LEGO sets that are expected to quietly exit or may have exited already, from LEGO stores and online, during the 1st half of this year.

The list of these retiring LEGO sets for H1 2021 is presented here.  In case you’re interested, you may click on the following LEGO Shop@Home affiliate links below to check out their current availability. Some of these sets may be temporarily out of stock or tagged as already sold out as I’ve checked a while ago as of this posting. Nevertheless, it is still helpful to check if your expected LEGO set is still included in this listing.

Just a disclaimer though – like previously retired LEGO sets, this list is not 100% accurate considering how fast these retiring LEGO sets might sell out. So I encourage you to do a quick search over at LEGO Shop@Home. A huge thanks to Stone Wars once again for sharing and verifying this list.

We’re just counting the days before the year ends, and LEGO was kind enough to notify us by email on what particular retiring LEGO sets will no longer be available once the year closes. When a LEGO set is deemed for retirement, it means that LEGO has pulled the plug on its production and will gradually be unavailable both in-store and online. Some of them may still be around and if you’re lucky enough, you may spot them at a far-flung corner of your local LEGO Store or a third-party seller.

So if you’re still holding back on that LEGO set that you have been thinking hard for so long, then now is the time that you might need to get it. The best part of getting them now before the end of the year is that several of them are now on discount to as much as 30% over at LEGO Shop@Home, plus with the promotional freebies that LEGO Stores are currently offering, there is a lot to gain in making that next LEGO purchase of yours.

If you’re still missing out on that one LEGO set that you are dying to have, then be sure not to dismiss this piece of news.  Allen from The Brick Fan has received information that the clock is ticking for the following retiring LEGO sets. This is not surprising actually since LEGO seems to be making more room for its first wave of LEGO 2020 sets. In fact, some of these are already finding their way on shelves as early as now across the country.

These retiring LEGO sets are now deemed at their End of the Line or EOL which means that LEGO is now posed to stop their production. Once a LEGO set is declared EOL, your chances of getting them are now only through the secondary market which of course, would mean that you have to shell out an oftentimes, ridiculous amount of cash.

Some of these sets may not appeal to you, and some you may find surprising that they will be retiring soon. I’m glad that I already added the LEGO Ideas Voltron (21311) set in my collection, and if you’re still holding back to that NASA Apollo Saturn V (21309) set, then this year is the best time to get this one.

Grab These Retiring LEGO Star Wars Sets While You Still Can

If you’re a LEGO Star Wars completionists, or just keen on eyeing some of the LEGO Star Wars sets that were released recently, then you might need to consider planning your next LEGO purchase. Star Wars insider Rebelscum shared a reliable piece of info that you might find interesting, if not necessary in building your LEGO collection. We all know for a fact that LEGO sets have a certain “shelf life” in terms of their availability in LEGO stores and in the market in general. Approximately, LEGO sets are available to the public and are included in the LEGO production cue for up to 2 years. And according to Rebelscum’s sources including info from RetiringSets.com, the following are retiring LEGO Star Wars sets that you may want to keep an eye on if you are looking forward to having them to your collection.

The first Master Builder set, the LEGO Star Wars Betrayal at Cloud City (75222) is due for retirement in December of this year.

Though yet to be confirmed, do take note that the retirement of these sets is said to commence in December until the later part of 2021. So if you’re still looking forward to having the largest LEGO set around, then you still have until December next year to gather the determination (and cash) to make that purchase. If you see a couple of retiring LEGO Star Wars sets in this list that you are looking forward to having, then be kind enough to purchase these sets through the affiliate links below that will bring you over at LEGO Shop@Home. Your support will go along way in keeping The Brick Show website up and running.

The largest LEGO set ever made to be available – the LEGO Star Wars UCS Millennium Falcon (75192).

Finally, as last note, I hope that scalpers will do the LEGO fan community a favor by not giving in to that urge of brick hoarding. Trust me, you’ll be a better person afterward.

This list is far from complete and may change without prior notice. However, knowing when these sets will possibly retire help us plan our LEGO purchases ahead.  Comment down below and tell us which among these retiring LEGO Star Wars sets do you still need to tick off from your list of must-haves.  Thanks again to Rebelscum for the tip.

LEGO Creator Expert Detective’s Office (10246) and Brick Bank (10251) Will Soon Retire

Advertisements

UPDATE: The LEGO Creator Expert Detective’s Office (10246) is still available for backorder on December 17 via Amazon, for the same LEGO Store price of $159.99. If you’re wanting to add this to your collection without cashing out additional bucks, then now is the best time to do so.

Early last November, LEGO made a series of announcements that would probably have LEGO collectors and fans rushing in to take action at the last moment. This is the news that a number of LEGO sets have been marked for retirement, which means pretty soon they’re going to run out just everywhere. And this time around, we might be seeing the curtain fall for two of the most loved LEGO modular sets around: the Detective’s Office (10246) and Brick Bank (10251).

Normally, the announcement that a LEGO set is to be retired means that it will eventually be removed from the production line, making it more and more difficult to find in any LEGO brand or certified store, with third-party retailers taking advantage of the situation. While the listings on Shop@Home haven’t been updated as of yet, their availability statuses are either “Sold Out” or “Call to Check Product Availability”.

LEGO Creator Expert Detective’s Office (10246)
LEGO Creator Expert Brick Bank (10251)

Indeed, the LEGO Creator Expert Brick Bank (10251) is now gone seemingly everywhere online, meaning, if any remain unsold they’re either unlisted or to be found only on some retail shelves. Now, the Detective’s Office (10246), which was a star last Black Friday, only has one set left available on Amazon.

Both these Creator Expert LEGO sets were part of a series of modular building sets that could be built side by side to create an urban street that’s more detailed than usually seen in LEGO City perhaps. The retirement of these two sets will also mean that their aftermarket prices will certainly balloon as well.

LEGO Shop@Home UK Discounts the Technic Line

Advertisements

The Holidays are almost upon us, and in LEGO online shopping that means special discounts on particular sets and the release of seasonal ones, usually added free with minimum purchases. And each Shop@Home has their own schedule as to when these special offerings start. These ones are for Shop@Home UK.

First, it looks like Shop@Home UK has put all their LEGO Technic sets on the discount list, each of them getting 20% off their regular prices. This is a prime opportunity to snag some of the Technic sets that have been labeled “Retiring Soon”; there are seven by last count.

Here are some of the best LEGO Technic sets to get by this 20% discount:

  1. Bugatti Chiron (42083) – £329.99 £263.99 HARD TO FIND
  2. Porsche 911 GT3 RS (42056) – £259.99 £207.99 HARD TO FIND
  3. 6×6 All Terrain Tow Truck (42070) – £219.99 £175.99
  4. Bucket Wheel Excavator (42055) – £189.99 £151.99 RETIRING SOON
  5. Extreme Adventure (42069) – £139.99 £111.99 RETIRING SOON

Just the purchase of any one of these LEGO Technic sets mentioned above will be enough to get the seasonal LEGO Christmas Carousel set (40293), which goes with the minimum purchase price of £85. This seems to be the first Shop@Home to definitely tell how 40293 will be available for the Holidays, as Shop@Home US hasn’t announced anything yet.

Missed LEGO’s Black Friday Deal for Retiring Ideas Set Old Fishing Store (21310)? Amazon Still Has Sale for It

Advertisements

November 23 – Black Friday 2018 – has come and gone, though some of the sales and discounts may have carried over the weekend. LEGO certainly took advantage of that fact by offering great prices for a selection of sets that have been announced for retirement by next year, jumping up interest.

One such retiring set given the spotlight during Black Friday on Shop@Home was the LEGO Ideas Old Fishing Store (21310). The price cut wasn’t only welcome; it was still large enough to qualify for a free LEGO Christmas Gift Box (40292) by itself. Too bad it was just one day.

By now, the Old Fishing Store (21310) is marked as sold out on LEGO Shop@Home, and with the retirement announcement done we can’t be sure if it’ll be restocked over there. Fortunately there are other places to look for it, like Amazon. They’re also offering nice price cuts for it.

With a 23% off courtesy of Amazon, the LEGO Ideas Old Fishing Store (21310) can be had for just about $114.99 over there. Granted, it doesn’t come with a free Christmas Gift Box (40292); but when you’re racing against time to get one before its retirement becomes effective with “sold-out” listings, then you’ve got to get it when you can.
