This news has been around for a couple of days already, but I see the need to post it right here. Last December, we had our first glimpse of 2017’s LEGO Speed Champions sets. However, at that time, there was one particular set that was still waiting to be revealed which we happened to believe back then to be the Mercedes Pit Stop (75880). This is not the case as it turned out because last Thursday, it was finally revealed what this mystery set is. It may not be what we expected, but nevertheless, it did not disappoint at all. LEGO announced via its Facebook page that its next LEGO Speed Champions set is dedicated to the recently revealed, orange speedster from the McLaren-Honda Formula 1 Team: the LEGO Speed Champions McLaren 720S (75880).
There is a good reason why LEGO waited for almost three months before revealing its brick-built version of the McLaren 720S. The supercar itself is still scheduled to be announced in public this month, hence, the strict embargo. The set joins the ranks of this year’s set of Speed Champion such as the Bugatti Chiron (75878) and the Mercedes-AMG GT3 (75877). Check out the rest of its curves below, courtesy of Drive Tribe.
What I like best about this set is its sleek, futuristic design and the use of actual LEGO pieces for its headlights rather than the usual sticker decals. The inclusion of a car designer minifig and other elements adds a very unique touch to this set, befitting of the true McLaren.
Though we have no information yet on the actual piece count, we know that the LEGO Speed Champions McLaren 720S (75880) set will be available this June, and will retail at $14.99 similar to the standalone sets in the series.
