If you’ve been keeping up with LEGO set news, then you know that the newest set in the Ideas lineup, featuring Women of NASA, was released at the beginning of this month. You also know that it depicts two real-life female NASA astronauts, an astronomer and a software engineer, along with representations of their work, from program manuals to scale models of the Hubble Space Telescope and the space shuttle.

What is only known just now is that this LEGO Ideas set, conceived as an inspiration for girls to become interested in STEM careers, is now the newest best-selling toy in just 24 hours as cited by CNN.
Proof of the Women of NASA set’s popularity was easily found at the LEGO Store in Manhattan’s Flatiron District, where Maia Weinstock, MIT News science writer and major LEGO fan-girl, was present to autograph boxes of Ideas set 21312 as they were sold in October 28.
Everybody, from parents wanting Women of NASA for their daughters, to older women wishing that the set existed during their childhoods, were extremely appreciative of Weinstock’s brainchild and told her so. Lines for the Flatiron LEGO Store actually went round the block, and customers worried that the stock for 21312 would run out before they could reach the counter.

Social media was also very abuzz at the selling power of Women of NASA, as well as very appreciative of this theme to empower and inspire women’s interest in STEM fields. Customers proudly posted their packages as they got them, and science agencies like the Smithsonian were full of praise.

At only $24.99, LEGO Ideas 21312 is the number one toy on Amazon right now; they are also sold out over there. As of this posting, Women of NASA is still available at the LEGO Store website, but who knows how that might last. LEGO sure hit the jackpot with it.
