Europe’s Gamescom 2017 is now in full swing, and other than the reveal of the different locations within the world hub of Chronopolis in LEGO Marvel Superheroes 2, one of the highlights of the gaming convention was the reveal of the game’s additional characters. IGN was on the scene together with the creative folks of TT Games to show a brand new gameplay trailer featuring several new Marvel comic book characters. Since its debut a couple of months ago, we have been steadily seeing more and more character reveals of classic and new Marvel superheroes and villains that will smash their way through the game. Here’s IGN’s interview with Phillip Ring (Executive Producer) and Wil Evans (Senior Designer) plus a live demo gameplay to show you around one of LEGO Marvel Superheroes boss battles. Watch this.
In this boss battle video, we see the game’s 7th level which takes place in Asgard and has our heroes pitted against the hellish behemoth, Surtur. What is interesting about this gameplay is that it introduces a new game dynamic were boss battles such as this requires players to make use of their character’s unique abilities on certain specific situations, in order to defeat the level’s boss. The boss’ behavior has also become more challenging since it can modify its attack depending on the player’s behavior as well. For example, if you prefer a melee approach since it could be your character’s strength and advantage, the boss may actually move far away from you. If you prefer the long-range strategy and keeping your enemy at bay, then the boss may actually charge towards you and close that gap. Needless to say, it is a very interesting improvement in Boss Fight AIs.
What is very interesting and probably what most of us wants to know are the new characters added to the roster of the game’s playable characters. As Ring and Evans revealed through the live demo, we have several new minifig characters such as Captain America (Roberta Mendez), Jane Foster as Thor, Maestro, Greenskyn Smashtroll, Vormund, Carnom, Throg, Tactical Force, and Iron Man (Old West) just to name a few.
We also spotted these never-before-seen LEGO Marvel Superheroes characters in the character selection page, though their respective gameplays were not shown: Man-Thing, Man-Ape, MODOK, Darkhawk, Heimdall, Hela, Horus, Vision, Kid Colt, Gamora, Forbush Man, Terminatrix, Vulture (Classic), She-Hulk, and Captain America (Pilot). It will really be great to see these digital characters having their physical minifigure counterparts, but who knows, maybe some of them are already in the works.
LEGO Marvel Superheroes 2 are slated to be released in the US on November 14, and November 17 in Europe. It is available for all major gaming platforms including the Xbox One, Playstation 4, Steam (PC) and Nintendo Switch. It comes with a Deluxe Edition that grants you early access to the Classic GOTG Character Pack, Season Pass, and an exclusive Giant-Man minifigure.
