Last week, LEGO has started to tease about an ‘awesome new play experience’ that promises to bring out the creativity in every child. As with any teaser, the speculations are quite plenty based on a very vague hint that LEGO posted on its official Facebook page.
There has been plenty of hype about what could this next big reveal that LEGO has in store at the start of the year, with most gearing towards the hope of having a latest version for the relatively outdated LEGO Mindstorms EV3 (31313) – and there’s a good reason to consider this possibility. Other than the blinking vertical light bar which probably represents a rather obscure sensor, the fact that the Mindstorm theme gets an update every 3 to 4 years is another telltale sign of this possibility. If you’re into Mindstorms, you may recall that the first NXT was launched in 2006 with LEGO Mindstorms NXT (8527), followed by LEGO Mindstorms NXT 2.0 (8547) in 2009, and its latest iteration in 2013 the LEGO Mindstorms EV3 (31313). Considering that this theme seems to be updated every 3 or 4 years, then I guess the likelihood of seeing an EV4(?) is not quite a long shot.
Moments ago, LEGO’s Facebook page has been updated again with their next teaser being a sort of a confirmation. This time, the flashing vertical light has been replaced with a tri-circle kind of lens that shows a flashing RGB light source so reminiscent of EV3’s Color Sensor.
The flashing RGB circles are very similar to how the EV3’s color sensor is configured, which is very familiar to those who are into LEGO Mindstorms and robotics in general. We’re still a couple of days away from January 4 and it is reasonable to expect a handful of announcements from LEGO later on, and of course, anything can happen beyond this point.

What I’d like to see:
– New Mindstorms CPU that can run from mains power (not just battery)
– Internet connectivity
– IFTTT integration
