Other LEGO Super Mario Sets and Characters Revealed

We’re still months away before we can see the release of the latest LEGO Super Mario sets, and as early as now, more and more info is coming in about this latest LEGO tie-in series.

Thanks to Slovakian online store Automodely, we now have a tentative list of additional LEGO Super Mario sets. If you recall, other than the Adventures with Mario Starter Course (71360), The LEGO Group also unveiled two expansion sets that will go along with it – the  Piranha Plant Power Slide (71366) and the Bowser’s Castle Boss Battle (71369). From the get-go, it is clear that LEGO intends the Super Mario theme to be one integral collection of sets that have a kind of game board function with the introduction of expansion sets that add a level of play feature to the Starter Course.

And thanks to Automodely, we now have the following set names (translated via Google) that give us an idea of what to expect from these sets.  Please take note that these LEGO Super Mario set names are based on a rough English translation so their official names might be different eventually.

  • Piranha Attack (71362)
  • Desert Pokey (71363)
  • Whomp’s Fortress (71364)
  • Bullet Bill’s Fire (71365)
  • Piranha Plant Power Slide (71366)
  • Mario’s House and Yoshi (71367)
  • Toad’s Treasure Hunt (71368)
  • Bowser’s Castle Boss Battle (71369)

The LEGO Super Mario Bowser’s Castle Boss Battle (71369) is an expansion set slated to be released sometime in August.

As noted by The Brick Fan, the listing of these sets on Automodely’s site uses LEGO’s Leaf code name for the Super Mario sets. We do not have any further info on these sets such as their piece count or product descriptions, so we just have to leave it to our imagination to figure out how these sets might look like. However, these sets also give us a hint on the partial repertoire of video characters that LEGO will be throwing in. We have Mario’s spikey cactus enemy in the form of the Pokey; the imposing and snaggletoothed Whomp; the iconic Bullet Bill; and Mario’s reliable allies Yoshi and Toad. As much as I would like to see minifigure versions of these guys, it is clear by now that these Super Mario characters will most probably come in brick-built forms.

Based on these sets’ expected retail price, it seems that next to Bowser’s Castle Boss Battle (71369), it looks like Toad’s Treasure Hunt (71368) is also one sizeable set.  As a last note, we can probably expect these sets to be officially announced within the next couple of weeks, so be sure to stay tuned.

LEGO Super Mario Super Mushroom Surprise (30385) Polybag Revealed

After the reveal of the first wave of LEGO Super Mario Expansion sets and the particular introduction of the theme’s first gift-with-purchase (GWP) set in the form of the Monty Mole & Super Mushroom (40414) freebie, the Nintendo-inspired LEGO theme will also have its first polybag offering. The LEGO Super Mario Super Mushroom Surprise (30385) polybag is a free item that will be thrown into your cart once you pre-order the LEGO Super Mario Starter Course (71360) via third-party retailers particularly Zavvi.

LEGO Super Mario Super Mushroom Surprise

Due to an overwhelming response from the LEGO fandom, the LEGO Super Mario Starter Course is now sold out at LEGO Shop@Home. However, if you wish to be one of the first to have their try on this first LEGO Super Mario set, then you may be glad to know that Zavvi has this set currently on sale over at their site. The caveat though is that it seems that both GWPs, set 40414 and the polybag 30385, are different freebies that LEGO opted to offer depending on where you will make your purchase of the Starter Course. The better deal, of course, is what LEGO Shop@Home offers. And since the LEGO Super Mario Starter Course is now sold out from LEGO’s official online shopping portal, those who missed out on that window of opportunity last week when LEGO launched its pre-order, have to settle for what 3rd party retailers have to offer.

30385 1

Brickfinder also noted the same with LEGO Certified Stores in Singapore when the Super Mushroom Surprise (30385) polybag was advertised as its promotional freebie for the LEGO Super Mario Starter Course. Now I completely understand that it’s just a marketing decision for LEGO to offer a better promotional deal over at their turf, but from a LEGO fan’s perspective, especially if I missed that opportunity and has to settle only for a less attractive deal, then it really sucks. Just to be clear, I’m not against the idea of a polybag promo – LEGO in fact released polybags that even contained exclusive minifigs such as, for example, the LEGO Batman Classic TV Series – Mr. Freeze (30603) polybag from 2016. But again from a fan’s perspective, having two different freebies for one particular set offering, depending on where you will purchase it, sounds a bit odd and disadvantageous for a customer.

There’s no word on when the LEGO Super Mario Starter Course with its free Monty Mole & Super Mushroom (40414) set will be available again at LEGO Shop@Home. But for now, if you want to be assured of your LEGO Super Mario Starter Course when it is released in August, then you may want to check with Zavvi with its free LEGO Super Mario Super Mushroom Surprise (30385), for that matter.

LEGO Super Mario Monty Mole & Super Mushroom (40414) Set Images Released

The first set among many from the LEGO Super Mario theme has been revealed already, and with it comes a nice pre-order freebie. LEGO Shop@Home has been updated to include the LEGO Super Mario Monty Mole & Super Mushroom (40414) expansion set as a pre-order gift for those who managed to bag the LEGO Super Mario Starter Course (71360) base set.

LEGO Super Mario Monty Mole & Super Mushroom

This free expansion set comes in at 163 pieces and has a retail value of $14.99. It features a brick version of a Super Mushroom (or Power Mushroom), a Stone Eye from the New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, and the cunning Monty Mole. A closer look at some of the pieces of this expansion set reveals several sensor tiles where the LEGO Super Mario figure can interact with. As previously revealed, the said figure is equipped with several sensors that will interact with certain set elements or pieces coming from future expansion sets. The LEGO Super Mario figure is also equipped with LCD screens and speakers for that leveled-up play feature and building experience. LEGO also intends this theme to be modular, so builders and hobbyists can re-arrange all these sets in many different ways possible.

It’s not yet sure when this pre-order bonus will go live once again since the LEGO Super Mario Starter Course is now immediately out of stock. Though LEGO specifically states this promotional item will be made available until July 31, it’s yet to be seen when it will be offered once again. As a side note, you might be interested to know that Walmart also carries the LEGO Super Mario Starter Course and is still currently available. However, the better deal is still with LEGO Shop@Home since it has the LEGO Super Mario Monty Mole & Super Mushroom (40414) expansion as a gift-with-purchase item.

You may want to click on the following link below if you wish to add the LEGO Super Mario Starter Course to your LEGO wishlist and be notified if this set is available once again. Thanks to The Brick Fan for the heads up.

More LEGO Super Mario Expansion Sets Introduced and Other Details

After unveiling the LEGO Super Mario Starter Course (71360) base set, LEGO gives us a glimpse of some of the things to expect from its repertoire of expansion sets. LEGO Lead Designer Jonathan Bennink gives us a tour of this entry set, while at the same time introducing two, new LEGO Super Mario expansion sets, one of which is the largest among the theme. Watch this.

Other than showing the various play features of the Starter Course, Jonathan also gave us a glimpse of the two new LEGO Super Mario expansion sets namely the Piranha Plant Power Slide (71366) and the largest set in the theme, the Bowser’s Castle Boss Battle (71369).

Its kind of fun and interesting to see how the LEGO Super Mario figure responds to the play features offered by each of these expansion sets. Since the LEGO Mario figure itself is equipped with several sensors, we can expect it to interact with these sets depending on what they have to offer. And since these sets are basically modular, the entire theme offers plenty of customization depending on how you want the course to be arranged. Think of it as a somewhat physical, brick version of Nintendo’s Super Mario Maker 2 where the challenges are virtually limitless.

Here’s LEGO’s official press release for more details. The LEGO Super Mario Starter Course (71360) is currently listed at LEGO Shop@Home, though a recent influx of pre-orders seemed to have overwhelmed LEGO that the online shopping portal needed to temporarily suspend the sale of the set. Coming in at 231 pieces and retailing for $59.99, the starter set and the rest of the LEGO Super Mario expansion sets will be available in the market starting August 1st.  If you were one of those lucky souls who managed to pre-order the set before it was taken down, you will also be receiving a pre-order bonus: the 163-piece LEGO Super Mario Monty Mole and Super Mushroom (40414) expansion set valued at $14.99.  Be sure to visit LEGO Shop@Home for more updates.

LEGO Super Mario Theme Officially Announced – More Details Revealed

Following the teaser that LEGO gave us yesterday, we know have a better idea of what this new LEGO and Nintendo partnership is and how this is translated into a new and innovative play experience. Needless to say, this new LEGO Super Mario theme is very much like a mash-up of the actual video game as seen through the eyes of young LEGO brick fans.

LEGO Super Mario

There’s no specific set reveal yet, save for a promotional video hinting on the fact that the LEGO Super Mario theme is not made up of only one.

As you may notice from this video, the centerpiece of this building playset is the sizeable, electronic LEGO Super Mario figure that has a pair of digital eyes and an expressive mouth. The objective is to maneuver the figure across the brick-built challenges and get handsomely rewarded with digital coins in the process. The idea is very much the same with how Mario needs to navigate the many different obstacles in the 1992 video game, Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins. LEGO is still quite mum on the set’s release date and how much these LEGO Super Mario sets will cost, especially considering that this LEGO version of Mario is very much the same as its Amiibo cousins from created and released by Nintendo.

The LEGO Group and Nintendo Partner to Take Legendary Brick-Building to a New Level

BILLUND, March 12, 2020: The LEGO Group announced a partnership with Nintendo that will change the way people interact with Super Mario in the physical world and engage in LEGO® experiences.

Both companies share a passion for innovation and play and their collaboration has led to a reimagination of the LEGO building experience, enabling an entirely new way to play inspired by the beloved video game icon, Super Mario.

Neither a video game nor a traditional LEGO brick-based set, LEGO® Super Mario™ is a new product line that features an interactive LEGO Mario figure who collects coins in real-life game levels created with LEGO bricks. The new line will let kids experience the playful world of Super Mario like never before. Super Mario will be brought to life in the physical LEGO world and new levels of challenge and styles of play will be part of the iconic LEGO experience enjoyed by generations.

The news was also shared in a video posted by the LEGO Group and Nintendo earlier today (https://youtu.be/Fq3hw4imZ3g).

The video, which hints at what fans can expect when LEGO Super Mario launches later this year, shows a player using an interactive Mario figure to collect coins in a real-life game level that has been created with LEGO bricks.

“We are very excited to bring Mario into the physical world through interactive and social LEGO play”, said Julia Goldin, Chief Marketing Officer, EVP of the LEGO Group. “With this experience we will help millions of kids with love for Mario to engage and play in a completely new way, where they are in control of creating and playing games with their favourite character. By seamlessly incorporating the latest digital technology, LEGO Super Mario is a highly social, interactive and collaborative experience for kids.”

“I have always liked LEGO products and how they help children use their imagination to play”, said Takashi Tezuka, Executive Officer and Game Producer of Nintendo Co., Ltd. “The new product we created together with the LEGO Group seeks to combine two different styles of play – one where you freely build the world of Mario and the other where you play with Mario in the very world that you have created.”

LEGO® Super Mario™ will launch later this year, and more information will be made available in the future. www.LEGO.com/supermario

LEGO Super Mario is Really Happening!

In a surprising turn of events earlier today, LEGO has dropped a teaser bomb that left most LEGO and Nintendo fans in awe. It’s a long time coming, and fans are still grasping for hints and details on what this upcoming LEGO Super Mario theme is, as announced by LEGO themselves through their social media channels.

There has been a lot of fan theories on what this reveal will be. However, based on the promotional teaser above, it’s really kind of hard to tell what it will be. For starters, the timing of LEGO’s announcement couldn’t be better: March 10 is the official global Happy Mario Day, celebrating Nintendo’s entire Super Mario franchise. Nintendo has chosen this day back in 2016 as the de facto date for the annual celebration, though it does not necessarily mean that it was the official date when the first titular Super Mario video game was released. March 10 was selected simply because of its uncanny resemblance (Mar10) to our plumber hero’s name.

Speaking of resemblance, the figure that LEGO teased in their most recent promotion is needless to say, far from the typical LEGO minifigure that we have. In fact, my first impression upon seeing this LEGO Mario is that it might very well pass for a LEGO Duplo figure, with its 4-stud wide base and over-sized blocky head.

LEGO Super Mario
This first official image of a LEGO Super Mario figure seems to follow the design of those found in LEGO Duplo.

Knowledgable Super Mario fans also point out to the fact that this official LEGO version has a very similar look to that of Mario Zone – one of the areas featured in the 1992 video game, Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins. There is a bit of truth in that similarity considering that this LEGO version of Mario does not seem to be quite organic with its electronic screen, and analog eyes and mouth.

mario zone
The Mario Zone – a level featured in the 1992 Nintendo video game, Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins.

Fans are still speculating if this LEGO-Nintendo collab will either lead to a wave of new LEGO Super Mario sets, or a new LEGO video game. LEGO is obviously keeping a tight lid on what it has in store – even LEGO’s VP for Design Matthew Ashton is not telling.

With this recent announcement, it clear that LEGO and Nintendo have moved on with their once bitter rivalry when the LEGO Group sued Japan’s biggest video game company back in the 60s for the latter’s introduction of N&B Block. Past forward in 2020, we can now expect great things to come now that they hurdled the licensing issues that weighed down both companies. For the longest time, LEGO fans have translated their love for both LEGO and Nintendo games in many creative ways that made us wish that these are actual LEGO sets. One great example are these custom LEGO Mario Cubes created by our pals from Build Better Bricks.

Honestly, I hope that LEGO Super Mario is just the beginning. With so many Nintendo names and titles to choose from to become an official LEGO set, we might be looking at the beginning of a LEGO Kirby, Legend of Zelda, Animal Crossing, Metroid, and other LEGO Nintendo subthemes. The possibilities are so very exciting!

So what’s your take on this surprising announcement? Are we to see new LEGO Super Mario sets, and if so, what sets are you looking forward to? Or is this a new video game or LEGO lifestyle partnership in the works? Tell us what you think in the comments below.
