Disney Infinity Cancelled – LEGO Dimensions Rumored to Pick Up the Pieces

Disney Infinity Cancelled!

Yes, you read it right. In a shocking turn of events, Disney execs have decided to pull the plug on one of the leading brands in the toys-to-life industry – Disney Infinity. This is despite recently adding characters from the Star Wars and Marvel line, expanding the current roster of Disney Infinity figures even further. Fans did not see this coming, especially when they were all hyped up and excited after John Vignocchi, Vice President of Production, and John Blackburn, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Disney Infinity made the announcement and painted a brighter picture of the future releases last March 1 during their Disney Infinity NEXT episode. There were some signs before that hinted at a downhill slide for Disney Infinity such as no further support for PC and Apple TV users, and a big damper on not having any Disney Infinity 4.0 this year.

The official news came out earlier today through a goodbye letter written by Blackburn to all the fans of the Disney gaming franchise. Here’s what he has to say:

By now you may have heard the news that we have made the difficult decision to discontinue production of Disney Infinity. From the beginning, Disney Infinity was built for you—our fans—and I wanted to take a moment to thank you not just for your support over the years, but for creating a community that made Disney Infinity more than just a game.

Our goal for Disney Infinity was to bring the best of Disney storytelling to life in homes around the world, and with your support we accomplished that. We hope you had as much fun playing the game as we had making it.

So what’s next for Disney Infinity? We have two final retail releases coming, including three new characters from Alice Through the Looking Glass later this month, and the Finding Dory Play Set launching in June.

And as we turn to the next chapter in our story, I want to thank everyone who helped bring Disney Infinity to life, particularly Disney’s Glendale-based production and publishing teams, our external development partners, and of course the incredible Avalanche team for their tireless dedication to this project.

But most of all, I want to again thank you for making Disney Infinity a part of your lives—and for adding to the Disney legacy by being a part of this community.

There have been speculations that LEGO may pick up where Disney Infinity has left off, by considering that the only hindrance for LEGO Dimensions to include a Star Wars and Marvel line up is because Disney Infinity currently owns the rights to publish them on the toys-to-life section. If you recall, Vignocchi made the sweeping statement via an IGN interview during E3’s 2015 convention that Star Wars will never come to LEGO Dimensions because doing so will ‘cannibalize’ the Disney Infinity business. Now that Infinity is no longer in business, acquiring the Star Wars and Marvel line for LEGO Dimensions is the most sensible thing to do.

[]

We’re not sure if LEGO has seen this coming, or if there is already a deal between Disney and LEGO regarding this. What is clear is that revenues have been steadily declining for Disney Infinity in spite of the boost that it received from Marvel Battlegrounds. Disney’s toy and gaming division saw sales drop two percent to $1.2 billion, while operating income declined eight percent to $357 million, as observed by Games Industry. This move also means that Disney Infinity’s game publishing division and gaming software developer, Avalanche Software, will be shut down as well, costing the jobs of approximately 300 individuals who work there. Overall, it can be said that the future of the toys-to-life industry is skirting along the edge of oblivion where the fate of brands such as Skylanders and Nintendo’s Amiibo are quite uncertain.

This is a hard pill to swallow, but will keep you posted here at the Brick Show as more news updates come in.

[UPDATED] WATCH: LEGO DIMENSIONS SUPERGIRL AND GREEN ARROW GAMEPLAY VIDEO

A couple of days ago, Portal Characters reported an interesting discovery on the toys-to-life scene that could lead to the possible inclusion of two DC Superhero characters namely Supergirl and Green Arrow in the roster of LEGO Dimensions characters. Based on the report, an unknown hacker was able to crack into the game’s system and discovered some pretty interesting finds. By gaining access to LEGO Dimensions’ specific codes, he was able to unlock the minifigure characters of Supergirl and Green Arrow, which led to speculations ranging from a discontinued LEGO Dimensions character set, or to a very clever take on how to modify the LEGO Dimension’s core game.

[]

In either case, the last piece of evidence that seems to validate these claims was found in LEGO’s very own Replacement Parts service. As it turns out, specific minifig parts of Supergirl are made available on the site if you type in 71170 – the LEGO Dimensions Starter Pack code for PlayStation 3. The following are the minifigure parts that were thought to belong to Supergirl. The prints on these parts are pretty much obvious.

[]

[]

[]

Now another piece of ‘evidence’ surfaced on the internet via Bricks to Life, and this time, an actual gameplay video involving Supergirl and Green Arrow can be seen which further strengthens the notion of another Wave coming anytime soon. The YouTube video was uploaded by a certain Lego Vid just two days ago.  Watch the video below:

As seen on the video (around the 1:24 mark), Supergirl is capable of firing off a destructive laser eye blast, coupled with a powerful dash that mows down baddies and other structures. Green Arrow on the other hand can fire its arrows in rapid succession and even has a special triple arrow attack which can hit multiple enemies at the same time.

[]

[]

Hot from the reveal of his first video, Lego Vid posted another one just yesterday, which shows a rather interesting ability that Supergirl has. Watch this:

UPDATE (April 7, 2016): Due to an alleged copyright infringement complaint from Warner Bros. Entertainment, YouTube has decided to remove the video below as of yesterday. We’ll leave you to speculate on the reasons behind this move from Warner Bros.

The video shows Supergirl in her Red Lantern rendition, together with LEGO Ninjago’s Lloyd and other characters from the first video. There were no other details given in the video other than the fact that Supergirl’s gameplay is very much the same as that of Superman, while Green Arrow has similar abilities as that of Legolas.

[]

So far, these series of revelations may point out that LEGO could have considered the inclusion of these superheroes in the roster of LEGO Dimension characters. We just have to wait and see if LEGO will surprise with another ‘Surprise Wave’ in the works, or even perhaps a prelude to a Series 2 shortly.

LEGO Star Wars The Force Awakens Video Game Coming June 28, 2016

For those who are excited about its arrival, the LEGO Star Wars The Force Awakens video game is now officially slated to be released on June 28!

It is bound to happen: Microsoft’s Xbox has announced on its website the release of yet another LEGO Star Wars video game, and this time it claims that “The Force is strong with this one.” Riding on the recent success of its two-billion-dollar movie counterpart, it wouldn’t come as a surprise if LEGO announces the release of the LEGO Star Wars The Force Awakens video game to keep the force moving.

LEGO Star Wars The Force Awakens – What You Need to Know

lego star wars the force awakens

Developed by UK-based TT Games, the LEGO Star Wars line-up has already made a distinct brand for itself, with endearing features and gameplay that are all too familiar to the fans of the series. True to its form, it promises the same light, but exquisitely challenging game modes, immersive shooting action, and of course, tons of virtual bricks to collect and to build ships and props from the Star Wars franchise.

Typical LEGO Humor and Star Wars Action Rolled Into One

lego star wars the force awakens

Not to mention the comedic antics of their minifig counterparts that are sure to draw laughter from children and adults alike. Xbox players may choose to follow either the light or dark side of the force by taking the roles of Rey, Finn, Poe, BB-8, Kylo Ren, Han Solo, and the rest of the characters from the movie. I guess it is safe to assume that we’ll be seeing all of the characters featured in the game’s cover art at some point in the game.

Watch the video game’s trailer below:

Though all of these may sound standard fare for all LEGO-based video games, Xbox promises a different take on the LEGO Star Wars The Force Awakens storyline. This time, the game will feature “exclusive playable content that bridges the story gap between Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi and Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” as mentioned on the Xbox website.

This is sure to gather more interest among gamers as they’re treated with unexpected twists and turns during the transition from Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi, and Episode VII: The Force Awakens.

Feature-Rich Games Modes

But the best promise of immersive gaming experience may actually come from the various game modes that come along with LEGO Star Wars The Force Awakens. For the first time ever, TT Games introduces the Multi-Build and Blaster Battles modes in the game’s line-up.

LSW3 screenshot 1488x837

“With Multi-Builds, use available LEGO bricks to open up new paths, then break them apart and re-build them again to open up another! And another! During Blaster Battles, use your surroundings as cover to stand against the First Order,” as Xbox describes it. We hope that the Blaster Battles will also include network-based, free-for-all, and coop gameplay.

Well, we can dream all we want, but in the meantime, we just have to wait for around five months before we can actually grab a copy and pound once again on our controllers. For now, this teaser video might give us a laugh or two. I guess even under his intimidating mask, Kylo Ren may have a chuckle or two when his lightsaber’s hilt needed several taps before he could get it to work right.

Availability and Release Date

LEGO Star Wars The Force Awakens is scheduled to be released on June 28, 2016. The last LEGO-based game to be launched recently was Marvel’s Avengers on January 26.

LEGO Avengers Open World Video Game Trailer Released!

Telltale Games recently revealed their latest trailer for the impending release of the “LEGO Marvel Avengers” video game. Unlike Telltale’s previous LEGO Marvel game, this game revolves around the events of the various films within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Highlights of the new trailer included several locations from most of the MCU’s films, and the ability to play as several characters who have yet to receive their own film; some of the trailer’s footage show Wasp flying around the streets and skyscrapers of New York and Cap’s buddy Falcon coming in from a landing to join a debriefing.

Like most major game releases, LEGO Marvel Avengers has a bonus for those LEGO or MCU fans whom are already willing to buy the game. Anyone who preorders the game with video game retail chain GameStop will receive a minifigure of Iron Man Mk. XXXIII, also known as the “Silver Centurion.”
