LEGO Studio-AR App with Apple AR Kit 2 Showcased at Apple WWDC 2018

Perhaps it’s in its very concept lies the idea that augmented reality (AR) is easily marriageable (in a sense) with mobile computing devices. Even LEGO itself has gone into the craze, with its Creative Play Lab giving previews of a LEGO-AR mobile app back in early December of last year.

It’s been half a year since the first images were shown, and LEGO is now showing off some further developments of this app, made possible by their utilization of AR Kit 2, the latest version of the proprietary AR dev-kit created by Apple. It was showcased this week at the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC).

What better way perhaps to display the new ARK2-powered capabilities of the new and improved LEGO Studio-AR, than to demonstrate the added features of its AR interaction between real LEGO sets and app-provided special effects. Two tablets running LEGO Studio-AR were trained on a fully assembled LEGO Creator Expert Assembly Square (10255) set. Check out their demo below.

Like magic, the app “filled up” the space around the Assembly Square (10255) with AR reproductions of other Creator Expert sets such as the Downtown Diner (10260) and Brick Bank (10251). That was showcased in the 2017 build; now the app does better by populating the scene with animated virtual minifigures walking in, out and around the real and virtual sets.

The LEGO Studio-AR app also has gameplay elements similar to other past LEGO mobile game apps, with virtual sets, vehicles and minifigures to unlock by completing quests. And to think, this development by LEGO is merely one of the many applications of Apple’s AR Kit 2, which has been used by many other developers from numerous different other companies present.

We’ll have to wait yet for the app to be complete, but the previews have been proving more promising every update, so we’ve nothing else but wait for its release.

LEGO to Collaborate with IKEA for “More Creative Play in Home Environment” Initiative

Go online and when you do a search – or ask questions – about IKEA, then aside from actual information you’re bound to run into a lot of jokes about the Swedish-founded but Netherlands-based manufacturing company that specializes in ready-to-assemble furniture. There’s surprisingly so much to make fun about their primary products.

But IKEA never got to become a multinational RTA furniture giant of a brand if they don’t do quality and reliable work. It’s no surprise therefore that they’ve forged a new partnership with another European brand that’s well-known for making various playthings for builders of varying ages to assemble: LEGO.

An official announcement by LEGO dated Thursday, June 7, was somewhat sparse on details as to what precisely their collaboration with IKEA entails. What it does say is that they’re jointly promoting a call for more creative play in the home environment, something the two companies are famously tied to.

There are some theories as to how the LEGO-IKEA partnership will be materialized, although the thought of RTA furniture with LEGO-like assembly mechanics is a cool thought. Perhaps LEGO heard of the independently-developed furniture line that’s supposedly “LEGO-compatible”. For now, we’ll leave you with the announcement text for your perusal.

IKEA AND THE LEGO GROUP IN COLLABORATION TO ENABLE MORE PLAY AND CREATIVITY

We know that play is an important part of life and we believe in the power of play. Play lets us be creative, explore, experiment, dream and discover. IKEA and the LEGO Group, join forces to encourage more play.

Play is key to develop. And it is an essential part of a better everyday life. Play is so many different things, for so many different people. In the everyday life there are different barriers for play. Some of the barriers are more evident for grown-ups. One being that grown-ups think that playing can be messy. Other barriers are more evident to children – like grown-ups trying to create order in the play environment, where children in fact enjoy and often immerse themselves in the midst of it all.

“It started with an invitation from the LEGO Group “Do you want to play?”. Of course we said yes to this and together we now want to enable more play by triggering play in the functionality of the everyday life. At IKEA we first and foremost want to resolve this built in or maybe just perceived conflict that play is messy in a creative, humanistic and playful way. Because we believe more play makes the home and the world a better place”, says Fredrika Inger, Business Area Manager for Children’s IKEA, at IKEA of Sweden.

In the IKEA Play Report, IKEA asked children what they want and 47% of them said that they want more playtime with their parent1. At the same time 90% of the asked parents believe play is essential to wellbeing and happiness, building on to the belief that play is important. In an upcoming study on play made by the LEGO Group, 95% of parents responded that play is fundamental to their child’s development and that playing with LEGO bricks helps their children to be creative. Then why don’t we play more? The collaboration aims to increase the opportunity for playing more. First out is to try to make the whole home a better functioning and more fun place.

“In the LEGO Group our mission has always been to inspire and develop children through play, and there’s an exciting and fun challenge in finding a solution that can encourage more creative LEGO play while at the same time pleasing parent’s interest in household look and feel to enable children and their parents to play together. We know that creativity is a critical skill needed for the future, but we also know that tinkering, experimenting, being creative and trying out new things can be messy. In our collaboration with IKEA we therefore wish to deal with the challenge that some parents might have with the – wonderful – mess that play creates”, says Lena Dixen, Senior Vice President, Product Development at the LEGO Group.

“Bringing people together over play and enable more play are things that are key for both us and the LEGO Group based on our respective visions, missions and values. That is why we want to explore what can happen when we work together, trying to get more of the many people to say yes to play”, says Fredrika Inger, Business Area Manager for Children’s IKEA, at IKEA of Sweden.

In the next couple of years the first outcome of the collaboration will reach customers in IKEA stores.

LEGO Ideas Voltron (21311?) Supposedly to Release in South Korea this August

From days of long ago, from uncharted regions of the Universe, comes a legendThe Legend of Voltron, Defender of the Universe! A mighty robot, loved by good, feared by evil…and very late in coming, or at least its LEGO Ideas set is. It’s been over a year now since it passed review, but there’s still no sign of it anywhere.

The latest word we’ve had of anything concerning the LEGO Ideas Voltron set was the reported updating of LEGO Store inventories in the EU, information that included its alleged set number (21311) and price tag (€179.99/$199.99). Nothing else followed since.

At least, until this new update of sorts came from, of all places, the South Korean news website “!T Chosun”. Their article said that an official for LEGO Korea leaked that the LEGO Ideas Voltron will be released in their country August 1, the first date ever given for it.

But if this report is factual, they why did it take so long for the set to come out after passing review? The LEGO official had an answer for that too. Apparently LEGO then needed to get a license from Voltron franchise owner World Events Productions, to begin their manufacture.

It all sounds rather reasonable at first glance, but having the news broken in a general news site in South Korea rather than a more LEGO-specialized source still raises some questions on its veracity. Right now we’re really antsy waiting for the big reveal, which will happen, perhaps, during the San Diego Comic Con next month.

LEGO Store July 2018 Calendar Now Up – Teases on Two Exciting VIP Exclusives

LEGO has rolled out its store calendar for July and it looks like we’re about to have an awesome summer ahead. Other than the usual freebies and gift-with-purchase items for this month, LEGO is also getting ready for other big events lined up for July such as the annual San Diego Comic Con. And rumor has it that next month’s VIP exclusives will saw the arrival of one of the most carefully guarded sets that AFOLs are so eagerly waiting for in a very a long time (myself included). Let’s take a quick look of what the LEGO Store July 2018 Calendar has to offer. You can also find a PDF version of this right here.

June 30 to July 8 – Free exclusive LEGO Beach Tote bag with a purchase of $199 or more. I can’t say that I’m thrilled with this freebie, at such a high price point as a gift-with-purchase item. $200 is too much to get a bag such as this, but nevertheless, I guess it doesn’t matter if you’re eyeing on larger sets such as the LEGO Technic Bugatti Chiron (42083) or the LEGO Creator Expert Roller Coaster (10261).

July 9 to 15 – Free Party Banana Minifigure with a purchase of $35 or more. This one is a more decent offer, with a reasonable price point attached to it. Similar to previous GWPs such as this year’s Easter Bunny Hut (5005249) and 2017’s Iconic Cave (5004936), the Party Banana (5005250) is a mascot-themed minifig that comes in a clamshell box, a boom box accessory and an all new banana guy printing.

July 1 to 31 – LEGO VIPs earn Double Points on certain LEGO Creator sets. These sets are the most recent Sunshine Surfer Van (31079) and the Modular Winter Vacation (31080), both offered at $34.99. Promoting these sets fits practically well with LEGO’s theme for the month of July.

July 10 to 11 – VIP Monthly Mini Build is a BBQ stand. LEGO VIP members should register at shop.LEGO.com/Minibuild-registration beginning June 15 to qualify for this monthly mini build.

July 18 to 31 and July 23 to 31 – VIPs get Early Access to a new exclusive LEGO set during these dates, respectively. Rumors are rife among LEGO fan forums that we are about to see the release of the much-awaited, and long overdue LEGO Ideas Voltron (21311) set. Speculations point out to the possibility that LEGO might take the opportunity at San Diego Comic Con to reveal the towering, and impressively designed LEGO Ideas Voltron set. A recent news outlet from Korea also points out that set 21311 will be available worldwide on August 1. This is truly an exciting month.

July 26 – Dream It, Build It, Keep It. – Come to any LEGO Brand Store during this date to receive one of four different mystery boxes of elements. Based on the rather grainy image of the box art, it looks like that this will be a kind of promotional gift for participating on this in-store event. Bear in mind that this is intended for children ages 5 to 14 and pre-registration is required starting July 1.

LEGOLAND Windsor Offers Chance for Free Entry to Dads on Father’s Day

In the UK’s LEGOLAND theme park at Windsor, the excitement has finally died down following the Royal Wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in the nearby namesake castle. LEGOLAND Windsor’s brick tribute will be remaining on display for some time yet, but there are other occasions to prepare for.

Case in point, June 17 is the third Sunday of the month, aka Father’s Day. And LEGOLAND Windsor has a special treat for dads visiting the park on that special day. What could be more awesome and heartwarming, perhaps, than to have family heads enter LEGOLAND that day for free?

You read it right. LEGOLAND Windsor Senior PR Manager Lauren Moss announced that they will be giving away free, precious tickets to 250 lucky dads. All they have to do is go to the park on June 17 between 8:45-10:00AM and gather at the Father’s Day Trivia Turnstile, installed by LEGOLAND for the day.

Once there, these coolest, brick-building dads will have to correctly answer trivia questions posed by LEGOLAND staff to win one of the 250 tickets, saving their cash only for their family members. “We know dads are used to being asked questions by their little ones,” noted Moss on the mechanics. “So we know they’ll be great at tackling our trivia question about our world famous Miniland and its new attractions.”

Trivia Questions at the Father’s Day Trivia Turnstile usually involve facts and statistics about the park, such as queries about the mini buildings on the Miniland themed area, where the recent Royal Birth and Royal Wedding displays still stand. Local Dads will need to get to know LEGOLAND better to get a chance for free entry on Father’s Day. One thing’s for sure, it’ll be fun for one and all.

Korean-Language LEGO Catalog Shows First Glimpse of Redesigned (and Renumbered) Architecture Las Vegas Set (21047)

LEGO Architecture has been on a roll with their releases of major city skylines in America and the world, although sometimes they might hit some stumbling blocks along the way. Case in point was their planned Architecture set of famous buildings in Vegas. It was delayed on account of needing to change one of its structures, the Mandalay Bay Hotel.

As you might recall, the Mandalay Bay was the site where a mass shooter attacked an outdoor concert with assault weapons on October 2017. LEGO thus decided to delay their Architecture Las Vegas (21038) while a replacement building was designed.

Apparently the redesign is done, according to another newly-uploaded online LEGO product catalog, this one in Korean. It even received a new set number – 21047 – and replacing the Mandalay Bay is another hotel, the Bellagio. The other structures remain unaltered, and the catalog reveals the set comes out in September.

legocatkrarchitecture

To summarize, the buildings comprising the skyline for new LEGO Architecture Las Vegas (21047) are: the “Welcome to Las Vegas” sign; hotels Luxor, Bellagio and Encore; the Stratosphere Tower and the Freemont Street Experience. There appears to be no other obstacles for this set to finally be released very soon.

We’re very grateful to LEGO for starting to release their product catalogs (in different languages) covering the latter half of 2018, as they’ve been sweet sources on info for various sets that months before were merely talked about but not shown. Past articles with us were courtesy of the LEGO Denmark catalog, though it may have been uploaded too early as it’s been taken down.

Here’s How You Can Build Your Very Own Custom LEGO Iron Giant

If you’ve already seen Ready Player One, then I’m pretty sure that you didn’t miss that big fight scene including the iconic Iron Giant – that endearing piece of 90s pop culture produced by Warner Bros. Back then, the innocent charm and appeal of the mysterious space robot quickly caught the hearts of children and adults alike. Up until now, the Iron Giant has remained a cult classic among fans, and has even caught the attention of devoted AFOLs and builders in recent years. You may, or may not be happy on how Ready Player One referenced the beloved metal robot (with some reviews criticizing the fact that Spielberg’s recent film only exploited these pop culture symbols), but seeing a brick-built version of the Iron Giant will surely put a smile on any AFOL’s face.

Back in 2016, in honor of this award-winning classic animation, I featured a particular LEGO Ideas Iron Giant project by BrettCUV that renders his love for the gentle giant using the best medium that we ever have – in LEGO bricks. I love the idea of having a LEGO Iron Giant set, and together with other 10K supporters we rallied to support this project. Unfortunately, it never passed through the scrutiny of the LEGO Ideas Team during the Third 2016 LEGO Ideas Review Stage. Needless to say, the thought of recreating this piece of animation icon is something that I wanted to see for a very long time.

If you’re one of those brick-building folks such as myself that couldn’t hardly wait to see a LEGO Iron Giant become a reality, then you might be glad to know that Build Better Bricks (or B3) gives you the opportunity to build this intergalactic space robot. Master builders Sean and Tyler now offer their latest creation – a 818-piece, custom LEGO Iron Giant. Check out the video below.

B3’s custom LEGO Iron Giant is expertly built using more than 818 LEGO pieces that are predominantly gray in color. Standing in at an impressive 13 inches tall, this highly articulated MOC comes with a total 23 points of articulation, allowing for an impressive number of movement and a variety of poses.

You can even add an optional Superman ‘S’ sign on his chest as you can see from the film. Alternatively, he can also turn out to be a seriously overpowered weapon of destruction especially with his blaster on hand.

This custom LEGO Iron Giant can be a hero…
…or a foe.

The 800-plus pieces needed to build this custom LEGO Iron Giant is estimated to cost at around $80 – a fair deal if ever LEGO will turn this to an actual set. Choosing the parts needed for this version of the Iron Giant, as well as any other B3 projects, are carefully selected to ensure that they are readily available when needed. Couple it with B3’s creatively fun building instructions, then making your own custom LEGO Iron Giant is a snap. The building instruction to make this project comes in at 115 pages, available in digital, PDF format. Build Better Bricks is now offering these instructions for $12, and is quite a bargain already considering the size of this brick-built Iron Giant.

IGFly01 1024x1024

If you wish to make this set, just head over to B3’s website and check out how to buy the building instructions for this custom LEGO Iron Giant. Your purchase includes the building instructions itself, a parts list, and a handy Stud.io file that you easily import to Bricklink.

Now, I just need to figure out how to put that dent on his head. Happy building!

The LEGO Movie 2 Official Trailer Finally Released – And It Looks Like Things Are Still Going To Be Awesome

After getting our first teaser poster, the much awaited The LEGO Movie 2 trailer has been finally dropped by LEGO and Warner Animation Group. In the trailer, we are shown a somewhat post-apocalyptic Bricksburg following the tragic events of Taco Tuesday where Duplo-like creatures from outer space went on a rampage on the city, leaving the place in ruins. Check out the trailer below.

Based on an article/synopsis from Deadline, the LEGO Movie 2 will set our brick heroes five years in the future following the events of Taco Tuesday where the first film ended. This new threat of LEGO Duplo invaders has plunged Bricksburg into chaos, leaving the once booming and cheery town into a Mad Max-kind of living. As Lucy (Wyldstyle) puts it, this hardened them to survive the tough living conditions they’re in, well except for good ‘ol Emmet who still managed to be overly optimistic.

emmet coffee

Eventually, it looks like Emmet is off to another mission not just to restore harmony to their brick-built universe but also to save his friends from the hands of a new character called Sweet Mayhem. I’m not quite sure if her character will eventually turn out to be detrimental to Emmet and to the rest of the team, since it seems that the real objective is to fend off the overpowered LEGO Duplo creatures. We just have to wait and find out.

sweet mayhem

Deadline also mentions that The LEGO Movie 2 will bring Emmet, Lucy, Batman and the rest of the gang to faraway, and unexplored musical worlds in order to discover the means to defeat the towering LEGO Duplo aggressors. We have to wait and see how this ‘musical’ aspect of the film will be reconciled with the somewhat depressing mood at the beginning of the film following the destruction of Bricksburg. Furthermore, being a film that combines all the best of what LEGO has to offer, I wouldn’t be surprised if LEGO will thrown in a LEGO Worlds-like environment where the S-Star (I hope I spelled it right) system can be portrayed.

s star system

Another thing that I am excited about is the new characters that the sequel will introduce: we have the Friends-inspired Sweet Mayhem, and the yet-to-be revealed Ice Cream Cone and Queen Watevra Wa-Nabi. We also get a glimpse of a new, and fiercer Unikitty which for me will look great as an actual LEGO set. Benny also had a reboot with a new cyborg-like arm, as well as Batman in a yet another new costume.

Other than hoping to see this version of Unikitty being part of an upcoming LEGO set, it would be great to have this modified version of Emmet’s house-turned-spaceship into another TLM2 set.

The LEGO Movie 2 is slated to hit theaters on February 9, and voiced by the same awesome artists from the first film such as Chris Pratt (Emmet), Elizabeth Banks (Lucy), and Will Arnett (LEGO Batman) among others. So what do you think? What other potential LEGO sets can you spot in this trailer? What twists and turns does LEGO and Warner Animation Group has in store for The LEGO Movie 2? Let’s talk about it in the comments below.
