A Better Look at the 60 Years of the LEGO Brick (40290) Commemorative Set.

A few days ago, LEGO partially unveiled a commemorative, promotional set that celebrates the 60th year anniversary of the patenting of the iconic LEGO brick. It’s kind of hard to figure out the details of this latest promotional set due to the rather grainy and pixelated image that we initially have. However, thanks to the recently released LEGO Store Calendar for January 2018, we can have a better appreciation of this set – the 60 Years of the LEGO Brick (40290) commemorative set.

40290 01

Needless to say, this promotional set is expected to be very popular among LEGO fans and collectors in general. For a single receipt purchase of any LEGO products worth $125 and above from January 28 to February 14, buyers can get this collectible set for free. Any devoted LEGO fan will instantly recognize the appeal of this commemorative set since it represents decades of beloved LEGO sets that most of us grew up with. Coming in at 421 pieces, the set features four microscaled versions of the most popular classic LEGO sets. These include the Airport Shuttle 6399 (1990) from the classic Town theme, the Castle 375 (1978) from the classic Castle and Knights theme, the Black Seas Barracuda 6285 (1989) from the Pirates theme, and the Space Cruiser and Moonbase 928 (1979) from the beloved classic Space theme. Each micro build is set on vignette style, brick-built platform, with a 2×2 printed tile piece, bearing the set’s 60th anniversary logo.

Just for comparative purposes, I included the blown up images of these miniature models, alongside the original sets that they represent. They’re not official images yet of the 60 years of the LEGO Brick (40290) commemorative set, as compared to what LEGO usually uploads via its servers, but for now, it provides us a better look at these fine micro sets.

A First Look at the LEGO Batman Movie Collectible Minifigure Series 2 Box Art and Blind Bag!

LEGO has just released its first LEGO Store Calendar for 2018, and in case you missed it, the second page of the colorful flyer now gives us our first ‘official’ image of the LEGO Batman Movie Collectible Minifigure Series 2. In this snapshot beginning from the top row (left to right), we can see the characters of Vacation Alfred, Black Vulcan, Jor-El, Clock King, and Soccer Mom Batgirl. On the bottom row, we have Vacation Joker, Friends Are Family Harley Quinn, Swimming Pool Batman, and Vacation Robin.

05 7931 JAN18 CAL medres Page 2 1

We already saw the full set of characters that are to be included in TLBM CMF Series 2 when its flyer/checklist was released online. It was a relief to know that this particular series highlights a pretty nice balance between rogues and super heroes (particularly those from the Justice League as we see them in the LEGO Batman Movie), and less on the many variants of the Dark Knight himself. You may check the list right here if you wish to know who are included in TLBM’s CMF Series 2.

This time around, and as we count the days before New Year and the eventual release of this latest collectible minifigures, we have folks over at social media and LEGO fan forums who seems to have an early start in completing their TLBM minifigures. We don’t have images of the actual minifigures themselves, but we now have a first look at how they will come in their respective boxes and blindbags. Take a look.

TLBM minifigs series 2b TLBM minifigs series 2

The color scheme for the boxes and blind bags is a clear departure from the bright yellow colors that we see from the previous blind bags in particular, and the box art of the TLBM theme in general. Moreover, the color seems to be in stark contrast to the lively, bubbly colors of the first series. Frankly speaking, the choice of blue on black colors for these blind bags seems to have more of a LEGO CMF Series 14 Monsters kind of vibe. But of course, this is just the packaging and what is even more important is how you will feel your way through each blind bag.

We don’t have confirmation yet on how TLBM CMF Series 2 is distributed per box, but seeing that Series 2 has 20 minifigs included in its roster, then it will not be a long shot to consider that each box may contain three complete sets similar to the first series. We’ll keep you posted as more news comes in.

2018 LEGO City Become My City Hero (40302) Spotted in Spain’s First LEGO Certified Store.

It seems that we still have another 2018 LEGO City that is still kept under wraps after the first waves of official images were released by LEGO last October and November. Thanks to Promobricks founder Michael Friedrichs, we now have another 2018 LEGO City that seems to have fallen off of our radar, and has been spotted somewhere in Spain, in Madrid to be exact.

Spotted in the wild during the grand opening of Spain’s first ever LEGO Certified Store in La Vaguada shopping center in Madrid, we now have our first image of the LEGO City Become My City Hero (40302) polybag. Take a look.

lego city polybag 40302 2

With a retail price of 4.99 Euros, the LEGO City Become My City Hero (40302)  polybag does not give a hint on its piece count. However, based on the above image, we can probably assume a piece count of somewhere between 90-130 pieces. The polybag seems to be more of an add-on to the Mountain Police subtheme of 2018’s LEGO City sets, and features what looks like to be a sort of a hideout for crooks to put away their stolen money, a raft, and mountain police/ranger and dog minifigures.

Unlike the first wave of 2018 LEGO City that came out and was spotted at some Toys R Us stores early in November, this particular polybag is still yet to make an appearance in the US. It also looks like that there’s not so much play features included in this polybag set, but we just have to wait and see once we find this in local toy stores.

Thanks again to Promobricks for giving us a heads-up. Credit goes to Michael for snapping these photos, and sharing them online.

January 2018 LEGO Store Calendar Now Up!

It’s never too early to make that 2018 LEGO wishlist, especially that the LEGO January 2018 Store Calendar is now available online via LEGO’s servers. With the promise of more than 120 new sets to be available by January 1st, LEGO sets the stage for this new line of offerings by highlighting 2018’s LEGO Creator modular set – the 1950s-styled Downtown Diner (10260).

Same as before, you may also download the January 2018 LEGO Store Calendar in high resolution PDF format, or you may check out its neat details below.

January 1: Get the Exclusive LEGO Creator Expert Downtown Diner (10260).

LEGO opted to reveal early on its next modular expert set coming in at 2,480 pieces and retails for $169.99. The Downtown Diner (10260) is a welcome addition to the growing number of modular sets that LEGO has been offering since the introduction of the Café Corner (10182) in 2007. The best part of this recent offering is that it doesn’t come with the usual VIP early access, so it is available for all once the set becomes available in-stores and online on January 1.

January 1-14: Free LEGO City Dragster (30358) Polybag With a Purchase of $35 or More of Any LEGO Product.

01 7931 JAN18 CAL medres Page 1

Earlier last November, we reported that LEGO will be releasing a great deal of polybags in 2018 which also includes the LEGO City Dragster (30358). Like any other City polybags, this mini brick-built Dragster will certainly look great in any Race Track MOC. This particular polybag comes with a racer minifigure and a cool red on black color scheme.

January 28-February 14:  Free 60 Years of the LEGO Brick set with a purchase of $125 or more, while supplies last.

02 7931 JAN18 CAL medres Page 1

2018 marks the 60th anniversary of the patenting of the iconic LEGO brick, and to commemorate the occasion, LEGO has announced a special collectible set that every true-blue LEGO fan would love to have. We saw a glimpse of this set – though a rather grainy one – a few days ago, but this time, we can now appreciate it in all of its microscaled details. The 60 Years of the LEGO Brick (40290) set can be yours for free, for every minimum single receipt purchase of $125 or more. Valued at $25 and coming in at 421 pieces, this commemorative set features four microscaled versions of the most popular classic LEGO sets: Airport Shuttle (6399), Castle (375), Black Seas Barracuda (6285), and Space Cruiser and Moonbase (928). The box art of this set even features one of the earlier logos adapted by LEGO during its early years. Though the set’s availability is still almost two months away, I am already excited to see how this set will actually turn out once it is built.

Finally, other than the 125 new sets that LEGO promises to release online and in-store once January kicks-in, most LEGO fans will also look forward in feeling their way on each blind bag once the LEGO Batman Movie Series 2 of collectible minifigures arrives in stores.  You may have noticed it by now that the 2nd page of the LEGO Store’s January 2018 calendar features are very first ‘official’ image of the said CMF series, after an image of its flyer/checklist insert has made rounds over the Internet. If TLBM still has a hold on you, then successfully collecting all 20 TLBM Series 2 minifigs is not much of a question.

05 7931 JAN18 CAL medres Page 2

There are still plenty of other LEGO sets to watch out for in January, and these include several new sets from the LEGO Star Wars The Last Jedi theme such as the Defense of Crait (75202), the LEGO Ninjago Ninja Nightcrawler (70641), LEGO Batman Movie The Justice League Anniversary Party (70919), and the LEGO BrickHeadz Aquaman (41600) just to name a few.

So what do you think? What LEGO set are you most excited about in 2018? Let us know in the comments below.

LEGO Studio-AR: A New Augmented-Reality Mobile App from LEGO

I would say it’s about time some major company followed in the footsteps of Nintendo and their one-time phenomenal game app Pokémon GO, developed by Niantic Labs. The novelty of using augmented reality to enhance a gameplay experience on mobile devices could feel new again if applied to another brand.

Well that time has come for a brand to pick up the gauntlet, and that is the LEGO Company itself. Through their Creative Play Lab arm, the world’s biggest toy company is putting their own spin into the AR concept, and even integrating the in-game experience to their real products.

01 iPad Mix Sets Together

The result is LEGO Studio-AR, a new and free-to-download augmented-reality experience app that enables mobile builders to assemble and play with virtually rendered actual LEGO play sets and minifigures. By means of the AR feature, players can “blend in” their virtual LEGO builds with their real-world kits in near-seamless combinations.

Once the LEGO Studio-AR app has integrated your virtual builds with a camera image of your real LEGOs, you can then start taking snapshots of the blended environment or even shoot video, of you moving your actual sets, minifigures and models while you edit special effects for the virtual sets.

03 iPad play control action

LEGO has announced an initial batch of sets rendered in virtual form for LEGO Studio-AR, though they most likely would increase the longer the mobile app remains up and running:

  • LEGO City Police Station (60047 )
  • LEGO City Train Set (60052 )
  • LEGO City Fire Station (60110 )
  • LEGO NINJAGO Green NRG Dragon (70593 )
  • The LEGO NINJAGO Movie Cole’s Mech (70632 )
  • The LEGO NINJAGO Movie Destiny’s Bounty (70618 )

Thus far there has been no word yet as to when LEGO Studio-AR will be officially released, and on which systems. LEGO Creative Play Lab, the developers of the app, is the new-technology research branch of LEGO.

Lloyd is Back as His ‘LEGO Ninjago Movie’ Minifigure Polybag (30609) Returns with Target

It’s nice of LEGO to sometimes give collectors who might have missed a promotional product or two in the past another chance (or two) to pick those uncommon items up. Their latest promotional comeback involves their previous feature-length CG-animated adventure The LEGO Ninjago Movie, which premiered last September.

One of the special promotional packages that were released back then was a minifigure polybag of LEGO Ninjago lead character Lloyd Garmadon (30609). Fans of the Ninjago line can now get another crack at collecting the badass ninja hero over at Target. They’re making him available not only in stores but online too.

52858696 Alt04

That seems to be standard operating procedure for LEGO to give rereleases of past promotions to major retailers like Target or Toys ‘R’ Us, if they’re not carrying the items on their own Shop@Home. Those who are looking to pick up the Lloyd (30609) minifgure can do so in two ways.

The polybag in itself is selling at the retail price of $2.99 on Target. Alternatively, if shoppers can rack up a minimum total $29.99 purchase of LEGO Ninjago products, they’ll receive one Lloyd (30609) polybag for free. If LEGO Ninjago’s your thing, here’s your second chance to find the ninja within ya.

MCU’s Avengers: Infinity War Official Trailer Has Arrived!

This day greeted me with a much welcomed surprise with the arrival of the first official trailer of MCU’s Avengers: Infinity War. I am literally speechless as I replayed the clip several times to see all the hidden details that I might have missed, and to probably guess what LEGO has in store for a Disney Marvel film as grand as this one. Avengers: Infinity War marks the culmination of 10 years of MCU films and it is where all Marvel superhero paths converge. In case you want to see it again (such as myself) here’s Infinity War’s official trailer, which is currently trending at #1 over on YouTube.

The best part of figuring out what LEGO tie-in sets will be included under this subtheme of LEGO Marvel Super Heroes is the fact that you don’t need to go further with all the predictions. As it turned out, Brickset has updated their listing to finally include tentative names of yet-to-be-confirmed six LEGO Marvel Super Heroes Avengers Infinity War sets, which we can also have an idea based on the trailer. I’ve included some screen grabs from the official trailer and added them under the sets’ supposed names so we can have a better grasp of how this LEGO set will be like. Please take note that this is my personal interpretation, so it might be entirely different from what LEGO has in store once the official set images are released.

LEGO Celebrates the Creation of the Brick with the 60 Years Of The LEGO Brick Commemorative Set!

A rather grainy image of January 2018’s LEGO Store Calendar has surfaced online, and has revealed what LEGO has in store to celebrate the creation of the world’s most iconic brick. 2018 will mark the celebration of the LEGO Brick patent and as it seems, LEGO will be giving away a commemorative set to highlight the occasion.

store calendar

According to this portion of the January LEGO Store calendar, the 60 Years of the LEGO Brick Set will be yours for free for a minimum purchase of $125 or more. It’s kind of difficult, however, to figure out the official set number, name and piece count based on this blown-up image, but looking at what you can expect from the set, it is quite clear that it also thoughtfully celebrates the 60th anniversary of the brick by offering four microbuilds of LEGO’s most popular classic sets. These include the Airport Shuttle (6399) from the classic Town theme, the Castle (375) from the classic Castle and Knights theme, the Black Seas Barracuda (6285) from the Pirates theme, and the Space Cruiser and Moonbase (928) from the beloved classic Space theme.  I’m particularly looking forward to the Castle and Black Seas Barracuda microbuilds, especially that it looks like each of them will come with a base of its own.

6399 1
1990’s LEGO Town Airport Shuttle (6399).
375 2
1978’s LEGO Classic Castle (375).
6285 1
1989’s LEGO Pirates Black Seas Barracuda (6285).
928 1
1979’s LEGO Classic Space Cruiser and Moonbase (928).

Judging from the looks of it, and even in microbuild versions, these individual sets will be a must for LEGO collectors, especially for those who grew up with the LEGO brick. We don’t have enough details yet based on this image, but as soon as the official January LEGO Store Calendar pops up in sharp PDF formats, then I’ll update you accordingly.

Thanks to Brickset News for the heads up.

New LEGO Powerpuff Girls Sets Reported Coming in 2018.

Last month, LEGO definitively announced the end of the line for the related sets and minifigure packs tied to the multiplatform toys-to-life videogame LEGO Dimensions by WB Interactive and Traveller’s Tales. It was a sad development, with the promise of regular product releases over three years ending about one year short.

LD Powerpuff 2

The LEGO Dimensions line was chock-full of sets and minifigures depicting a wide variety of licensed properties, one of them being the Powerpuff Girls (minifigure pack 71346 for one). These products were plenty nifty while they lasted, and apparently LEGO agrees enough that they might get more sets coming out next year.

52634057

Even outside of LEGO Dimensions, the Cartoon Network-originating animated series still looks to be getting a lot of love from LEGO themselves. YouTube channel just2good broke the news about rumors that new LEGO Powerpuff Girls sets will be on their way come 2018.

Two sets were revealed by name: Bubbles’ Playground Showdown (41287) and Mojo Jojo Strikes (41288). Whether the designs for these characters will hew closer to the original 1990’s series run, or to the rather divisive reboot that started in 2016 instead, time will tell.
