LEGO Foundation Awards LEGO Prize 2018 to Bangladeshi Social Worker and Founder of BRAC International NGO

As the premier brand name for children’s educational toys throughout most of the world, LEGO can be considered one of the foremost voices towards encouraging the early education of children through, of course, good play. And they’re gracious enough to award other companies and organizations that support such early-age development.

This is the ideal for the LEGO Prize, a special award given by The LEGO Group’s charitable arm, to worthy individuals and groups that are proponents of learning through play. This year, LEGO Foundation is giving the Prize to Bangladeshi social worker and honorary British Knight, Sir Fazle Hasan Abed.

Sir Fazle is the founder and longtime chairperson of BRAC, arguably the largest developmental NGO in the world operating in Bangladesh and 13 other nations spread across three continents. He was presented the LEGO Prize at Denmark by LEGO Foundation board chairman Thomas Kirk Christiansen, along with a $100,000 grant.

On his acceptance speech, Sir Fazle expressed his honor at being accorded the award from LEGO, and thanked them for the cash grand that came with the LEGO Prize. Every child deserves the opportunity to grow and develop,” he said. “This generous financial contribution will support the holistic development of an underserved group of children in Bangladesh with special needs.”

BRAC was considered for the LEGO Prize on account of their 1,400 early-childhood development centers located in Bangladesh and other nations like Uganda and Tanzania in Africa. With programs that helped children learn and develop through appropriate games and toys, the success of these centers were what caught LEGO’s praise.

“At BRAC, we pride ourselves on taking an innovative approach to early childhood development and education and share the LEGO Foundation’s passion for learning through play,” added Sir Fazle in his speech. “Through our Play Lab programme, we have seen first-hand the power it can have in a child’s development.”

Born 1932, Sir Fazle Hasan Abed founded BRAC in 1972: a year after Bangladesh became a separate independent nation from Pakistan. His purpose was to help improve living conditions for the people devastated by war, including the early-education of children.

For his efforts he was appointed Knight Commander of the Order of St. Michael and St. George (KCMG) in 2010, eligible as he was born when his birthplace in Bangladesh was still part of India under British colonial rule.

LEGO Juniors Elastigirl’s Rooftop Pursuit (10759) Reveals Incredibles 2’s Villain

WARNING: NOT-SO-MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD.

The official trailer for Disney Pixar’s Incredibles 2 has been dropped over the Internet, and with it comes the revelation of the film’s main villain. If you saw the trailer already , then you may have noticed that it teased on the ominous character of ScreenSlaver.

screenslaver

The trailer didn’t reveal much about this new superhero nemesis. However, it can be seen that ScreenSlaver has the ability to use TV signals as a way to mindlessly control people like a sort of hypnosis. It can prove to be disastrous, considering the scope of its effect and the sinister things that ScreenSlaver can do to people under his control.

Though the trailer didn’t reveal much about ScreenSlaver, we can get a few ideas of his inner workings, and the manner in which his hypnosis works. Thanks to Amazon’s current listing just in time with the trailer’s release, the LEGO Juniors Elastigirl’s Rooftop Pursuit (10759) sheds some light on how ScreenSlaver will put his plans into motion, and how Elastigirl (aka Mrs. Incredible) will be able to stop him. Perhaps this major plot point is the consideration why LEGO did not reveal this set right away when it revealed its first LEGO Juniors Incredibles 2 sets.

Check out these official images of the Elastigirl’s Rooftop Pursuit (10759) set, together with its product description as seen in Amazon.

LEGO Announces Second Retail Store to Open in Shanghai This Fall

Here’s a new bit of news in LEGO’s continuing initiative to establish itself in China, one of the world’s largest toy but also as a battleground between genuine brands and knockoffs. Aside from partnering with local companies and even the state school system, they’re also expanding their reach in retail.

LEGO has announced that construction has begun on their second flagship LEGO store on Chinese shores. This one will go up in Shanghai, specifically at the People’s Square commercial complex in Huangpu, occupying about 585 square meters and be comprised of two stories. It’s expected to open by the fall.

Jacob Kragh, LEGO China General Manager, says that the development of the LEGO Store is part of their efforts to reach out to Chinese consumers. “It will bring more opportunities for Chinese children, parents and LEGO fans of all ages to enjoy high-quality engagement with the LEGO brand,” he said.

In addition, LEGO Brand Retail Senior VP Claus Flyger Pejstrup remarks to the historical importance of Shanghai’s People’s Square where the new LEGO Store will open. People’s square is a unique place,” he remarked, “but also is a key point of attraction for many visitors from all around the world.”

The first LEGO Store in China was opened as part of the shops in Shanghai Disneyland. The second will be the first branded retail store of the company to be out in the commercial district of a major Chinese city. Its opening will be a major milestone for LEGO China.

Another 10K Support Entry for LEGO Ideas’ First 2018 Review Stage: “Star Wars” Prequels’ Acclamator-class Assault Ship by Lucero

Thus far, we’ve covered quite the interesting selection of submissions to the LEGO Ideas platform which have gained the necessary 10K supporters and thus been included in the latest round of panel reviews for “official set” status: the First 2018 Review Stage. Now, we’ve got another addition to the list. 2349854 o 1acrqlohn1dch15ld1sme1qhjm4p7 thumbnail full  Our new LEGO Ideas 10K entry is one for the LEGO Star Wars crowd, and it’s a real beauty of a scale model. And no, it’s not an Imperial Star Destroyer, but a most likely predecessor. Ideas member Lucero has created an Acclamator-class Assault Ship used by the Galactic Republic.

You might recall in Episode II: Attack of the Clones that, following the investiture of emergency powers to Supreme Chancellor Palpatine (*cough-Sidious-cough*), he pulled out a Grand Army of the Republic complete with Clone Troopers and these bad-boy ships to both ferry them across planets and engage in fleet actions.

2349908 o 1acrr8qe01efl1lbs895jo61pt87 thumbnail full

Lucero conceptualized the model in LEGO Digital Designer, a process that took him 60 hours total according to his project info. Its features include detachable hull paneling to reveal interior rooms – sickbay, engine room and so on – with room for minifgures and droids, though he mentioned no specific characters included.

This Star Wars prequel-era vessel now joins the ranks of recent LEGO Ideas 10K passers like SR-71 A: The Final Flight, Modular Arcade, Tree-house, I am Amelia Earhart, Disney’s Stitch and several others. It’s going to be interesting to see how the Acclamator Ship stacks to the rest of these.

LEGO Rebrick Presents “Your Brick Selfie” Contest with BrickHeadz Go Brick Me (41597)

When it comes to their full-customization BrickHeadz Go Brick Me set (41597), LEGO has been busy promoting all the fun things you can do. Foremost of course is the possibility of creating a BrickHeadz version of yourself with your own hands. But LEGO’s even making a contest out of it.

Now, LEGO Rebrick has announced a simple little competition – with prizes, naturally – that would spur those who have gotten the BrickHeadz Go Brick Me (41597) to let their creativity flow. As you may have guessed, the mechanic is just to interpret oneself in BrickHeadz form. The best designs win prizes.

All interested contestants of LEGO Rebrick’s “Your Brick Selfie” competition can submit their entries in the form of five photos of their BrickHeadz self, write a little description of their work on the submission form at the Rebrick contest page, and then send it off before May 8, 10AM EST.

“Your Brick Selfie” entries will be looked over by a panel of judges from LEGO’s BrickHeadz dev team. Based on four equally-scored categories (originality/coolness, details, theme relevance and best LEGO use), they’ll select one grand winner and two runners-up, plus a bonus prize winner that’ll be totally chosen at random

The Grand Winner will win a US$200 shopping spree on shop.LEGO.com, a certificate, and a flood of BrickHeadz figures (12 from LEGO DC, Marvel and Star Wars; 1 Go Brick Me (41597) and 23 other BrickHeadz sets that will be sent off one they’ve been released, including 12 retailer exclusives. Its kind of exciting to hear that LEGO has these 23 soon-to-be announced BrickHeadz sets  in the works so we’ll surely pay close attention to this.

The runners-up will each receive a certificate, the same set of 12 BrickHeadz figures received by the Grand Winner, plus 11 more sets of that line that will come once released. Finally, the randomly chosen Bonus Winner gets the same BrickHeadz sets as the runners-up. That’s a lot of prizes.

Once again, you can learn more about LEGO Rebrick’s “BrickHeadz: Your Brick Selfie” contest on their official site right here.

First Look At LEGO Juniors Disney Princess Belle’s Story Time (10762) and Ariel’s Underwater Concert (10765)

June 15 is still far off, but it looks like some fortunate souls already had their hands on the latest LEGO video game minifigure exclusive freebie, following the likes of last year’s LEGO Giant-Man minifigure. We already know that the LEGO Incredibles 2 video game comes bundled with an exclusive LEGO Edna Mode minifigure when you pre-order the game via GameStop. But what comes as a surprise was when YouTuber Disney Dan managed to have a polybag of Edna and saw what was on its respective building instructions. Printed on the back of the flyer were two box art images of  never-before-seen, upcoming LEGO Juniors Disney Princess sets: Belle’s Story Time (10762) and Ariel’s Underwater Concert (10765). Check out the following screen grab below courtesy of Disney Dan.

The LEGO Juniors Disney Princess Belle’s Story Time (10762) comes in 87 pieces and includes a Belle minidoll, a small buildable castle, a kind of  picnic mat with some food accessories, and microfig renditions of Mrs. Potts and her son Chip.

10762

The next reveal is the LEGO Juniors Disney Princess Ariel’s Underwater Concert (10765) which includes a minidoll version of Ariel, microfig versions of Sebastian and Flounder, and a dolphin minifigure . It shows Ariel on stage with a microphone stand. Frankly speaking, this 92-piece set feels very much the same as the Ariel’s Dolphin Carriage (10723) set from two years ago. The latter features the very same dolphin, a slightly different carriage, and Flounder’s microfig. Needless to say, the elements used to build Ariel’s Underwater Concert (10765) set look very much like the ones used for this most recent offering.

10765

There’s still no news regarding the expected release of these upcoming LEGO Juniors Disney Princess sets, but our expectation is that it could be early June which means we can have official images around next month. Thanks again to Disney Dan for sharing this to us and if in case you want to see his review of the Edna minifigure, you may check out his video right here.
