WATCH: LEGO NASA Space Shuttle Discovery (10283) Designer Video

LEGO has just revealed its next commemorative, NASA-inspired set in the form of the LEGO NASA Space Shuttle Discovery (10283). The set celebrates the 31st anniversary of the original NASA STS-31 mission together with the launch of the Hubble Space Telescope back in April of 1990. And to give us a glimpse of the design process that went through the creation of this next LEGO direct-to-consumer set, LEGO designers Milan Madge, Mani Zamani, and Nico Vas give us a tour of how this came about through this LEGO designer video.

The LEGO NASA Space Shuttle Discovery (10283) is a larger, more detailed version of its predecessor, the LEGO Space Shuttle Discovery-STS-31 (7470) released in 2003. This more recent brick rendition of the Discovery clocks in at 2,354 pieces and is expected to retail for $200 starting April 1st.

As an 18+ set, the LEGO NASA Space Shuttle Discovery is not just a display piece but is also filled with plenty of play features that replicate the functionalities and accomplishments of its real-life counterpart. One of its more significant features is its accessible payload bay that contains a brick-version of the Hubble Space Telescope. The cockpit also reveals flight and mid-decks, plus seats for 5 crew members. And for a more glorious display piece, the set also comes with display stands to exhibit both the shuttle itself and the space telescope.

And like any exclusive set offering, the LEGO NASA Space Shuttle Discovery also comes with first-for-April-2021 LEGO pieces as revealed in this LEGO designer video. These include a 4x8x4 quarter-circle panel with pinholes for the payload wall, a 4x6x1 round windscreen with black frame print, and a 3x3x1 brick curved quarter circle.

10283 new elements
Several new LEGO elements are introduced in the LEGO NASA Space Shuttle Discovery (10283).

The LEGO NASA Space Shuttle Discovery (10283) will be available in all LEGO brand stores and LEGO Shop@Home in April. Be sure to add this to your LEGO wishlist to be notified once it is available for purchase.

ICYMI: LEGO NASA Space Shuttle Discovery (10283) Landing this April

In case you missed it, the LEGO Group has officially announced another set that celebrates their creative collaboration with NASA. Unveiled earlier this week, the LEGO NASA Space Shuttle Discovery (10283) celebrates the launch of the original NASA STS-31 together with the Hubble Space Telescope in 1990.

10283 1

The commemoration of this historic event is now immortalized in LEGO form through the LEGO NASA Space Shuttle Discvovery (10283) set, slated to arrive this April. And what better way to launch (no pun intended) this set is by having the first-ever American woman astronaut to have ever walked on space introduce this latest LEGO-NASA collab. Dr. Kathy Sullivan was even kind enough to even share some of her insights as a pioneering astronaut, and to encourage budding LEGO builders, engineers, and scientists to pursue a career in space exploration.

The LEGO NASA Space Shuttle Discovery (10283) is an 18+ set coming in at 2,354 pieces. The set will be directly available in all LEGO brand stores and LEGO Shop@Home for $200 beginning April 1, 2021. Read more about LEGO’s official press release about this new offering, and likewise you may click on the following affiliate link below if you wish to add this to your LEGO wishlist. This latest LEGO 18+  will certainly look magnificent beside other NASA-inspired sets such as the LEGO Ideas International Space Station (21321) and the LEGO Ideas NASA Apollo Saturn V (92176).

As the Grand Prize winner for the LEGO Ideas Out of This World Space Build contest, bulldoozer’s LEGO Ideas The Adventures of the USS Cardboard has the privilege of becoming the next official LEGO GWP set. And in case you don’t know yet, LEGO fan designer bulldoozer or Ivan Guerrero in real life is also the fan designer behind the more recent LEGO Ideas 123 Sesame Street (21324).

Congratulations once more to Ivan Guerrero and a huge thanks to all the finalists for inspiring us to just keep on building.

LEGO Ideas The Adventures of the USS Cardboard is Our Next LEGO GWP

Several weeks ago, the LEGO Ideas platform has launched another contest that tapped into the collective creativity of the LEGO fan community. Dubbed as the Out of This World Space Build Contest, the contest managed to pool 15 finalists vying to become LEGO’s next gift-with-purchase (GWP) set. And after the votes were finally tallied, the honor of being the next LEGO GWP has now landed to the upcoming LEGO Ideas The Adventures of the USS Cardboard.

Adventures of the USS Cardboard

Similar to its predecessor the LEGO Vintage Car (40448), the LEGO Ideas The Adventures of the USS Cardboard was a fan-submitted entry that managed to gather the highest number of votes (2,869 votes to be exact) among the LEGO fan community and will eventually become an official LEGO set.

Designed by LEGO fan builder bulldozer (aka Ivan Guerrero), the LEGO Ideas The Adventures of the USS Cardboard is Ivan’s playful take on his fond memories of ‘space adventures’ with his brother when they were children. Another fun fact in case you don’t know yet, Ivan Guerrero is also the LEGO fan designer behind the LEGO Ideas 123 Sesame Street (21324). Pretty neat right?

As a fan of minifigure vignettes, I personally voted for this entry and was sincerely looking forward to seeing this become an official LEGO set. The vibrant color scheme, the child-like wonder that the set evokes, surely hits all the nostalgic strings of childhood fun and awe. Plus, the story behind Ivan’s creative process speaks close to everyone’s heart – childhood innocence and a sense of wonder and adventure all wrapped up in close family ties make this set an absolute winner.  Plus the fact that it appeals to LEGO’s classic Space theme really hits the sweet brick spot.

I’ll keep you posted once LEGO releases more information later on. Congratulations once again to LEGO Filipino fan designer  Ivan Guerrero for this prestigious recognition!

LEGO DC Comics Super Heroes Batman Cowl (76182) Revealed

After unveiling its LEGO Marvel Carnage (76199) brick helmet a couple of weeks ago, a third-party retailer now gives us a look at another LEGO buildable display set following the same genre. Similar to Target’s reveal, Barnes and Noble has now published official images of the LEGO DC Comics Super Heroes Batman Cowl (76182), scheduled to arrive on April 26.

Batman Cowl

If you were following the rumor train on this one, you have probably seen what this new LEGO DC Super Heroes Batman Cowl has to offer. Coming in at 410 pieces, the model stands at 22 centimeters and is geared primarily towards the adult LEGO fan community. It follows the same design concept as that of the LEGO Marvel Carnage, even coming with a similar nameplate intended for display purposes. And given that the brick-version of Marvel’s Carnage is expected to retail for $60, then it goes to show that its DC counterpart may likewise sell within the same price range as well.

As of this posting, B&N seems to have removed the LEGO Batman Cowl over its shopping portal (oops, I guess someone was quite excited for the reveal) and is still yet to appear over at LEGO Shop@Home. I’ll update you as soon as more information comes up. Thanks to Hoth Bricks for the tip.

Here’s A Chance To See Your Disapproved LEGO Ideas Projects Become a Reality

If you are actively into supporting LEGO fan creations over at the LEGO Ideas platform, chances are there are a lot of product ideas that you voted for that eventually did not made it past the Review Stage. And this time around through a collaboration with BrickLink, some of these disapproved LEGO Ideas projects may still have a chance to become a LEGO set soon.

Dubbed as the BrickLink Designer Program: 2021 Invitational, 31 LEGO Ideas 10K club projects were chosen to be included in this crowdfunding initiative. Through this, these qualified but disapproved LEGO Ideas projects will go through pre-production, crowdfunding, and production stages where BrickLink members who pre-ordered these sets will have the chance of having these delivered to them.

For more information on what these 31 LEGO Ideas 10K projects are, you may head over to BrickLink’s website right here. You may also go through the details and FAQs provided by the LEGO Ideas blogsite.

*******************************

KICKING OFF THE BRICKLINK DESIGNER PROGRAM: 2021 INVITATIONAL

Today we’re excited to share the next steps in the collaboration between LEGO Ideas and BrickLink via the BrickLink Designer Program: 2021 Invitational.

As communicated in December 2020, we planned to invite a selection of LEGO Ideas members and their 10K Club submissions to participate in the pilot program, the purpose being to realize more of the amazing fan designs that are submitted to LEGO Ideas.

The result has been that 27 members have agreed to participate in 31 10K Club projects. We’re thrilled at the response we got from the invited members with almost 100% of the invited members deciding to accept our invitation.

The designers are already very busy at work on their designs in the “pre-production” phase. In this phase, designers must re-work their designs to fit a few program requirements, such as having to build their creations digitally in BrickLink’s Studio using a particular palette of LEGO bricks and colors, resizing their designs to fit between 400-4000 elements and more.

The pre-production phase, which ends May 31st will also include testing phases. Submissions must pass the pre-production phase and deadline to have their design(s) eligible for crowdfunding.

On the BrickLink landing page, you can find the overall timeline for the program as well as an in-depth FAQ that can hopefully assist you with answers to your questions. The BrickLink team will also be available to answer your questions.

FAQ
WHY WERE SO MANY OTHER 10K CREATORS NOT INVITED TO PARTICIPATE IN THE BDP 2021 INVITATIONAL?

Considering the maximum number of sets we can produce, only 32 projects were selected among all the unrealized LEGO Ideas projects. No IP-based models are invited to the program as they cannot be produced through this program.

WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO DESIGNS THAT DON’T MEET THE PROGRAM CRITERIA DURING THE PRE-PRODUCTION PHASE?

Designers of all the participating projects have to revise their original design to meet the program requirements and pass the test building before May 31st. Only the projects that meet the production requirements will be listed for crowdfunding.

HOW MANY DESIGNS WILL BECOME BRICKLINK DESIGNER PROGRAM SETS?

Only the first 13 projects to reach the crowdfunding goal will become BrickLink Designer Program sets.

WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO THE DESIGNS THAT DON’T REACH THE CROWDFUNDING GOAL OR ARE NOT AMONG THE 13 QUICKEST TO HIT THEIR GOAL?

The remaining projects in the crowdfunding phase that don’t become BrickLink Designer Program sets will be sold as digital Building Instructions only so that you can still have an opportunity to find your own bricks to build them.

HOW ARE FAN CREATORS COMPENSATED FOR THEIR IDEAS?

Fan designers will receive a 10% royalty fee for BrickLink Designer Program sets, while designers of Digital Building Instructions will receive a 75% royalty fee.

WILL YOU MODIFY THE ORIGINAL LEGO IDEAS DESIGN DURING PRODUCTION?

In the BrickLink Designer Program, we do not intend to change the original designs that are loved by the fans, but there can be inevitable modifications due to production requirements, such as part availability and stability issues. All design revisions will be done by the original designer, and the revision history will be shared on the project’s details page.

Are We Going to See a LEGO Marvel D2C Set Anytime Soon?

Now that the LEGO Group has somewhat permitted in principle, the online discussions of rumored or arriving LEGO sets, this has provided many LEGO fan sites some leeway to share their speculations. And one piece of news coming from the leaky faucet is the arrival of a LEGO Marvel D2C or direct-to-consumer set this May 2021.

The news came from reliable Instagram member exabrickslegogo when he shared over social media that a huge LEGO Marvel Daily Bugle D2C set may be in the works. The rumored set is said to retail for $300 and will not exactly be a tie-in for the upcoming Spider-Man: No Way Home film but will take its inspiration directly from its comics counterpart. It may also be related to Sony’s upcoming Venom 2: Let There Be Carnage film. In case you missed it, LEGO has also released a LEGO Carnage (76199) set as part of its more recent line of LEGO Helmet Collection.

If you’ve already seen the first Venom movie, you will recall that at the end of the film, it was hinted that Eddie Brock (played by Tom Hardy) will be shifting his career from creating investigative videos, to a more “old-school” journalistic approach. Since then it was hinted that the Daily Bugle might be making an appearance in Venom 2, and may eventually be a part of Venom’s cinematic universe. And this perfectly ties up with the comics as well considering how the Daily Bugle is central to the work of Eddie Brock as a freelance journalist. Again, these are just speculations at this point so you may want to take all of this with a grain of salt.

marvel daily bugle
This year’s LEGO Marvel D2C set is rumored to be inspired by the Daily Bugle as depicted in Marvel comics.

Given this LEGO Marvel D2C set’s rumored price tag of $299, it will most probably earn its spot as the second priciest LEGO Marvel set following the LEGO Marvel Super Heroes The SHIELD Helicarrier (76042) released in 2015. And given that this set clocked in at almost 3,000 pieces, we can speculate that the LEGO Marvel Daily Bugle set will be around 2,000 to 2,500 pieces. This is a heck a lot bigger than what LEGO came up with back in 2013 when it offered a LEGO Marvel Super Heroes Spider-Man: Daily Bugle Showdown (76005).

76005 alt1
LEGO once released a LEGO Marvel set depicting the Daily Bugle.

And if indeed we are seeing a May 2021 release date, we can expect more news to come in about this next LEGO direct-to-consumer set anytime next month. In the meantime be sure to check with our blog site for future updates, and over at LEGO Shop@Home for the latest LEGO Marvel sets around.

This Custom LEGO Serenity Set Is a Space Renegade’s Dream

While director/producer Joss Whedon takes a momentary back seat from Zack Snyder’s Justice League streaming in just a couple of days via HBO Max, Build Better Bricks now relives one of Whedon’s most iconic pop-culture creations in this massive LEGO Serenity MOC.

Yep, as bold as maverick as the crew of the Serenity back then, this next B3 creation is its grandest offer to date. Based on the 2002 hit Fox TV series Firefly by writer and director Joss Whedon, and its 2005 theatrical counterpart, this custom LEGO Serenity build features tons of details that are very much familiar to fans of the TV series and film. Like its original counterpart, this build features the ship’s prominent large rear engine module, a pair of wing-mounted, rotating vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) engines, and a pair of two-man shuttles known in the series as “Beetles”.

LEGO Serenity

On the inside of this brick-built creation, the details are likewise spectacular. We have a fully accessible cockpit, a spacious hallway connecting to the dining area and infirmary. The dining area and most of the ship’s sections may also be accessed by removing its middle top exterior or any of the opening hatches below it. Its rear engine room is also accessible to reveal its full interior.

And with over 2,000 pieces LEGO pieces used to build this custom LEGO Serendipity, it is B3’s largest building instruction ever created following its custom LEGO Milano back in 2017. So if you’re interested to revisit some of those wild space adventures aboard your very own Firefly-class spaceship, be sure to head over to Build Better Bricks to purchase the premium building instructions for this custom LEGO Serendipity MOC. For $25, you’ll get a hefty 285-page building instruction in full PDF format, a parts list, and a Stud.io file that you can easily import to Bricklink to buy the needed LEGO parts that you’ll need. Remember that you’ll need to purchase or provide the required LEGO parts separately, as B3 only offers the building instructions for this massive custom set.

LEGO Marvel Carnage (76199) Now Up at LEGO Shop@Home

Last week, it was revealed that a villainous Marvel character will be added to the LEGO Helmet Collection in the form of the LEGO Marvel Carnage (76199). Initially offered as a Target pre-order exclusive, it is good to know that the set has finally appeared over at LEGO Shop@Home slated for an April 11, 2021 release.

LEGO Marvel Carnage (76199)

The LEGO Marvel Carnage (76199), which is basically more of a bust rather than a helmet, takes its cue from its notoriously evil villain counterpart from Marvel comics (which makes me also wonder if having such a vicious baddie in its roster of Marvel sets will run counter against LEGO’s values). This is not the first time that LEGO featured this ultra-violent character, though. There are two particular LEGO Marvel sets where this blood-colored symbiote is featured: 2015’s Carnage’s SHIELD Sky Attack (76036) and the more recent Spider-Man and Ghost Rider vs. Carnage (76173). And now having the LEGO Marvel Carnage (76199) helmet/bust under the LEGO 18+ series further seals Carnage’s place in the LEGO subthemes.

And in case you’re interested to add this set to your Instagram-worthy LEGO collection, then you may click the following affiliate link below to add this set to your LEGO wishlist. The LEGO Marvel Carnage (76199) set comes in at 546 pieces and will retail for $60 once it arrives in stores on April 11.

But thankfully, LEGO opted to extend this promo until Wednesday. And given the fact that it still appears in our LEGO Shop@Home cart upon check out is a good indication that LEGO has enough of these sets to go around.

LEGO Amelia Earhart Tribute
The availability of the LEGO Amelia Earhart (40450) gift-with-purchase set has been extended until this Wednesday, March 17 as seen in this promotional page from LEGO Shop@Home.
