LEGO Ideas “Go STEM!” GWP Contest Not Yet Announcing Winners

For the most part, contests on LEGO Ideas run quite smoothly. A contest page is set up, followed by a waiting period for entries. The usual procedure afterwards would consist of the expert review, a fan vote, and finally announcing the winners. Sometimes there might be multiple reviews and votes, if the contests have prelim/semi phases. For the most part, the contest is over when the LEGO Ideas team reveals the winners. Of course, sometimes something comes up. Like now, an Ideas contest that would conclude Thursday…didn’t announce its champions.

Indeed, the LEGO Ideas “Ready, Set, Go STEAM!” Contest should’ve concluded June 9. That was when the winner announcement would be done. But a visit to the contest page reveals an announcement at top. A LEGO Ideas team spokesperson notes that the STEAM contest will delay its reveal of the winners. Apparently one runner-up contestant hasn’t been responding to official communication from the Ideas platform. For consideration, the Ideas team decided to put things off until all winners are aware and responded. They did say the reveal will be ASAP, but nobody knows how long the wait could be. For the moment, we’ll keep watching the Ideas STEM Contest page.

We covered “Ready, Get Set, Go STEAM!” here in The Brick Show last month. You can check out the 15 finalists vying for grand champion and five runners-up over there. The cool LEGO sets they’d get would be topped by the grand champion’s submission becoming an official GWP in future.

LEGO Ideas Contest “Ready, Set, Go STEM!” Crowd Vote Begins for GWP Shot

It’s a given that custom creations on LEGO Ideas have a long way to go towards official set-dom. Gaining supporters is one thing while impressing pro LEGO Ideas reviewers is quite another. On average, less than a handful of product ideas will emerge approved per Review Stage. Fortunately, Ideas provides alternative venues for its members to see their builds become LEGO products. Sometimes they open Contests for submissions to get fast-tracked towards approval. Just last month for instance, LEGO Ideas launched a Contest for STEM-themed submissions. Following a review period in the middle of this month, the vote’s finally ready.

Brick Fanatics tells us that LEGO Ideas Contest “Ready, Set, Go STEM!” opened its Crowd Vote on Thursday, May 26. No less than 15 entries are in the running to become an official LEGO gift-with-purchase set. And of course, the Grand Winner and runners-up will receive some cool and recent LEGO sets from various themes. Check out STEM-themed submissions, some with animated images too:

Five runners-up will get two Technic Sets (Rescue Hovercraft 42120 and BMW M 1000 RR 42130) and two post-promo GWPs (Vintage Car 40448 and Sailboat Adventure 40487). The Grand Winner will receive all these plus the Technic All-Terrain Vehicle (42139) and Ideas Globe (21332). Crowd voting for this contest ends June 2, with the winners being announced June 9.

Legoceo’s Auto Repair Garage 1930s Gets 10K Support for Ideas Second 2022 Review

We’ve got another LEGO Ideas 10-K support update to give now. This makes it the fourth such submission to enter the Second 2022 Review Stage. Subject-wise, two of the previous three entries for this stage are structural in nature. Both of these are also based on licensed IPs that LEGO’s made sets of in the past. The latest 10-K product idea for the Second 2022 Review Stage is an original concept. It’s also nostalgic trip to the past of sorts. And while not minifigure-scale like the earlier submissions, it’s got a larger, more detailed charm.

So it goes for Auto Repair Garage 1930s, as designed by LEGO Ideas member legoceo. The build is a quaint garage with the inter-World War design aesthetic. The construction appears convincingly brick-and-mortar, with even aging effects like creeping vines.

The outside boasts various car components and two self-service gasoline pumps. Inside is a nicely-cluttered workspace with period tools and appliances to sell the 1930s look.

But it’s not a garage without a car, so legoceo took care of that too. The blue car is similar to a ‘Thirties Chevy, especially with the spare tire next to the driver-seat door. Overall the set looks fantastic even with no minifigs in sight.

Even so, having no people in the set will give Auto Repair Garage 1930s a challenge to engage reviewers. It’ll have to be an Age 18+ LEGO Ideas set if successful. We’ll just have to see how it fares among Second 2022 by next year.

LEGO Ideas “Vincent van Gogh – The Starry Night” (2133) Revealed, Coming June

“The Starry Night” by Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh is one of the most famous late-19^th Century paintings. This artwork catches the eye with whimsically swirling sky patterns and brightly glowing moon and stars. But those same patterns have been interpreted as visualizations of Van Gogh’s lifelong inner turmoil. As a masterpiece painting, “The Starry Night” has featured in pop culture. Don McLean sang about it in his 1971 song “Vincent”. A 2010 “Doctor Who” episode on BBC featured the artist in monologue while imagining the night sky like his painting. And now LEGO’s getting its own interpretation of it.

After months of collectors knowing it was coming, LEGO has officially listed Vincent van Gogh – The Starry Night (21333). This brick-built rendition of the named painting arose from a LEGO Ideas submission by Truman “legotruman” Cheng. “The Starry Night” bursts out of the frame via LEGO-brick relief. At the foot of the frame is a Van Gogh minifigure at his easel with a mini-version of the scene. This is sure to be a sought-after LEGO Ideas product as soon as it launches next month according to Brickset. Now let’s check out some more product info:

LEGO x Target Opens Fan Vote for New Ideas Set from Three Review Non-Passers

Ideally, the LEGO Ideas platform is a LEGO builder/set designer’s dream come true. When it comes to practice however, the whole thing has a once-in-a-blue-moon feel. Getting a product idea to 10-K support, then passing the review, sees plenty of submissions whittled down to a handful. And those handfuls of made-official LEGO Ideas sets can take months to years before being launched. In the meantime, many other product ideas languish unless their creators re-submit them (with edits). This news courtesy of The Brick Fan can offer hope to some selected failed Ideas submissions. LEGO’s offering this surprise comeback chance thanks to a major retailer’s partnership.

There’s a new entry to the LEGO Ideas Activity page. LEGO’s teaming up with Target to give one of three Ideas submissions which failed in review another chance. And to make sure, registered LEGO Ideas members will vote for their favored submission. The winner of the vote will become an official Ideas set. It’ll be exclusively available in North America at Target stores and online in LEGO.com US. LEGO Shops and Branded Stores will carry this item everywhere else globally.

The winning product idea gets announced in August. As for when the set actually hits Target and LEGO Stores, it’s all a matter of waiting for it.

10K-Supported Motorized Steampunk Skyship Joins LEGO Ideas Second 2022 Review

Making one’s own original LEGO build in hopes of it becoming an official set is hard enough. Trying to develop a whole LEGO theme, one with an overall narrative to boot, is another thing altogether. And yet LEGO Ideas 10K Club Member Castor-Troy looks to be trying just that. Late last year he got his “Steampunk Explorers” into the LEGO Ideas Third 2021 Review Stage. His build of an explorer HQ/lab was both complex and interactive. It was also peopled by minifigures with interesting character profiles. Steampunk Explorers currently remains in review; but now another Castor-Troy submission of similar thematic substance just gained 10,000 supporters.

Say hello to the Motorized Steampunk Skyship, another fantastic product idea courtesy of consistent 10K-getter Castor-Troy. This also marks the second entry for his growing steampunk-themed submissions. Both builds depict a Victorian-era steampunk adventure world in an alternate 1889 Earth. Where Steampunk Explorers showed an adventuring theme in their domicile, this one depicts a separate crew on a voyage. The “skyship” Silver Arrow goes on a round-the-world trip to discover the secrets of the classical element Ether. As they’ll be passing over the Carpathian Mountains, known vampire haunt, they have vampire hunters in their company.

Castor-Troy not only gives us a modular steampunk airship; he also motorized it to turn the ship propellers. The Silver Arrow crew comprises seven minifigures that can man the skyship, which can also be supported by a plinth.

Like with Steampunk Explorers, this product idea is a team effort between Castor and fellow builder MaxBrich. If “Explorers” can pass its ongoing review, it could potentially spell good tidings for Motorized Steampunk Skyship. This submission is the third entry to LEGO Ideas Second 2022 Review Stage.

New LEGO Ideas GWP Teased to VIPs: Cosmic Cardboard Adventures (40533)

Early last year, LEGO Ideas launched a contest themed after space travel and exploration. The guiding rule for entry submissions was that the builds be “out of this world.” Ultimately the Ideas crew chose as the grand winner the creation of Ivan “bulldoozer” Guerrero. Yep, he’s the same LEGO fan builder behind the nostalgic LEGO Ideas 123 Sesame Street (21324) from 2020. His entry, The Adventures of the USS Cardboard, would be tapped as the inspiration behind LEGO’s next gift-with-purchase (GWP) set. After a year’s wait, we now have word from the LEGO Group. The Ideas submission-turned-GWP set now has a new name, set number, and promo period in the form of the LEGO Ideas GWP Cosmic Cardboard Adventures (40533).

Brick Fanatics reports that LEGO has released a teaser for the LEGO Ideas Cosmic Cardboard Adventures (40533) gift-with-purchase set. A single complete image was found in the official LEGO VIP newsletter. Compared to the original work by Ivan Guerrero, the official Ideas set offers a near-exact replica. The “spaceship” still looks like it was made primarily of cardboard. The bedroom walls serving as background even have nearly the same shade of blue. One notable difference is the lack of robots from Ivan’s version. But now the bedroom astronaut’s teddy bear gets a power-walker harness. All told, this looks like a keeper GWP.

LEGO VIP didn’t specify when the gift-with-purchase period for the LEGO Ideas GWP Cosmic Cardboard Adventures (40533) set will start. They did reveal that the Ideas mini-set will be available for a total LEGO purchase of $160 up. It may be too late to join the LEGO Star Wars May the 4^th bandwagon. Still, Ideas GWP 40533 can’t be that far away. A bold estimate of the promo period is sometime within this May. Let’s wait for LEGO’s official word.

Indy, Lilo & Stitch Kick Off Submissions to LEGO Ideas Second 2022 Review Stage

Late last month, we mentioned the lengthy period of LEGO Ideas First 2022 Review Stage during a 10-K feature. We never expected that Seb_E’s Jules Verne’s Nautilus would actually close out Ideas First 2022. And as of last week, LEGO Ideas Second 2022 Review Stage now features two product ideas with 10,000 supporters each. With only a couple of submissions to this latest batch, it’s too early to note trends. Still, we can see these product ideas from ItsABricksLife626 and Tvrulesmylife being structured and based on licensed IPs. Let’s take a closer look at them both:

Lilo & Stitch: Beach House

LEGO Ideas 10K Club Member ItsABricksLife626 gives us an early-2000s Disney throwback with this submission. As the name states, it depicts the Hawaiian beachside home of Lilo Pelekai and her pet alien Stitch. This location is central to the 2002 Disney film and its sequels and animated series spinoff. ItsABricksLife626 recreates the familiar red-roofed, white-walled domicile, with easy interior access thanks to detachable roofs. Lilo and Stitch minifigs are accompanied by their big Ohana unit. There’s Lilo’s sis Nani, her boyfriend David, alien housemates Jumba and Pleakley plus social worker Cobra. The house also features several cars, flying or otherwise.

Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark 40^th Anniversary

The first “Indiana Jones” movie, “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” premiered way back in 1981. It’ll be 41 years now this 2022, but 10K Clubber Tvrulesmylife finally got his product idea supported for review. The build comprises three sections, depicting the Peruvian jungle ruin from the film’s beginning. LEGO Indy must claim an idol from a pressure-sensitive base, climb a vine, and outrun that giant boulder again. For those who remember the short-lived LEGO Indiana Jones line and were disappointed about “coconuts,” this submission could redeem things. But first, it needs to impress the Ideas reviewers.

Jules Verne’s Nautilus Hits 10-K Support for LEGO Ideas First 2022 Review

The LEGO Ideas First 2022 Review Stage has run for nearly a third of said year by now. In terms of submissions, this batch of aspiring sets awaiting review has swelled to 39 product ideas total. And we have to say these are the most thematically-diverse entries yet to secure 10,000 supporters. You’ve heard this song and dance many times before since late January, so let’s move on. The 39^th product idea to grave First 2022 Review is a public-domain IP. It may not be generally-appealing beyond “classical” literature fans, but it boasts intricate mechanics.

Here we have “Jules Verne’s Nautilus” as interpreted by LEGO Ideas 10K Club Member Seb_E. His work depicts the titular submarine from the aforementioned author’s pioneering sci-fi novel “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.” The buildable submarine set comes with a stand designed as the seafloor with Atlantean ruins, plus a gigantic squid encounter.

Interior-wise, the Nautilus fits plenty of creature comforts for its minifigure crew. We have Captain Nemo and his First Mate, alongside passengers Professor Arronax, Conseil and Ned Land. With an articulated kraken plus easily accessible insides, Jules Verne’s Nautilus won’t get in the way of fun play.

This submission certainly earned its 10-K support milestone, joining 38 others on LEGO Ideas’ First 2022 Review Stage. It’ll be an uphill battle given its predecessors on this batch. But any LEGO collector who reads Verne will want to see this become an official set.

Notting Hill Market by Lepralego Joins LEGO Ideas First 2022 Review

Some locations in the world are so iconic that they feature prominently and often in popular culture. Landmark structures serve as obvious identifiers of locales like London’s Big Ben, or Paris’ Eifel Tower. Sometimes however, a location doesn’t need to be iconic in that sense to get tourists flocking to it. They may be something as simple as a street or neighborhood like Broadway in New York City. You can go further down and have it be a cozy neighborhood that still grabs attention. That would explain perhaps this new 10-K addition to LEGO Ideas First 2022 Review Stage.

The Notting Hill Market is the brainchild of Ideas 10K Club Member Lepralego. Yep, it’s his second submission to hit 10-K support and join the First 2022 Review after the Magical Village. Lepralego replicates a portion of London’s Notting Hill district, particularly the outdoor market at Portobello Road. This section of Notting Hill encapsulates the area’s artistic, fashionable and multicultural character. It’s no small surprise that pop culture has set some stories there. There’s “Bedknobs and Broomsticks,” “Paddington Bear” and 1999’s “Notting Hill” itself starring Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant.

As you can see here, Notting Hill Market is a busy street-scene set. Rows of shops face market stalls just off the roadside curb. And if you think the outdoors are all there’s at, the shop building interiors are pretty sweet too. If Lepralego should see this set approved in review, then Notting Hill Market could be a potential hit.

No LEGO City build of London would feel completely well-rounded without it. It’s a good dream, and we wish Lepralego luck with this product idea. Hopefully it and Magical Village over the Bridge won’t cannibalize each other’s support to the LEGO Ideas reviewers.
