Here’s What To Expect From The Largest LEGO Fan Convention in the Philippines – The Abrickadbra 2017 (Part 1).

Here at the Brick Show, one of our aims is to offer our followers a glimpse of the best and most creative use of the LEGO brick both in the US and across the globe. The appeal of creating something new using LEGO seems to be universal to say the least as evidenced by locally arranged LEGO fan conventions and brick festivals all around the world. Last March, I mentioned in one of my previous posts that the Philippines is getting ready for its largest LEGO fan convention spearheaded by the Philippine LEGO Users Group, or PhLUG. Dubbed as Abrickadabra, the LEGO fan convention showcases the most creative MOCs, both from kids and adults alike, that also cleverly conveys the unique Filipino culture.

Standee 20151

Frankly speaking, since the inception of Abrickadabra in 2015, I never had the opportunity of visiting this LEGO fan event for various reasons. So imagine my excitement when I was invited to PhLUG’s mini press event a couple of weeks ago to have an early look at what we can expect from the country’s largest gathering of LEGO fans.

full Abrick

The PhLUG is currently steered by its captain and founder Piper Protacio, who also happens to be the Philippines’ LUG Ambassador. His passion for the LEGO brick is seriously contagious! Speaking in behalf of PhLUG during the mini press event, Piper gave the attendees a glimpse of what will take place on the 27th as Abrickadabra 2017 kicks in.

1 Picture

First off, a little background about Abrickadabra. Now on its third year, it is PhLUG’s annual LEGO fan convention where original LEGO MOCs, building events, and informative LEGO building techniques are shared and discussed all in an atmosphere of fun and camaraderie. It is by far, the largest LEGO fan convention in the Philippines, followed only by BRICKXhibit which is also organized by PhLUG and held usually in December. Every year, PhLUG strives to make Abrickadbra even better by adding more interactive, hands-on activities that cater not only to children and AFOLs, but to the general public as well. Its overarching goal is to promote the LEGO brick as a medium to channel one’s creativity and to see it not just a mere toy made of ABS plastic.

Piper went on to introduce the cool guys behind PhLUG’s SIGs or sub-interest groups, and on display during the press event were some of the MOCs that will be showcased during Abrickadabra. There are five SIGs under the PhLUG umbrella, namely:

  • Force Legion, which specializes in Star Wars builds and other vehicles from the galaxy far, far away.

StarWars3 StarWars2

  • Kingdoms, where medieval kings, pirates, and samurais rule.

IMG 20170509 153044 Pirates 2016

  • Sci-fi, where LEGO artisans give life to sci-fi characters, mechs and Steampunk creations.

IMG 20170509 152919

  • Urban, when it’s an urban jungle of LEGO bricks out there.

Rizal Park 2016 Amusement Park 2016IMG 20170509 152948 IMG 20170509 152958

  • Versus, where all the brick-built superheroes converge and clash.

IMG 20170509 155254

Other than the creative minds behind this amazing MOCs, what caught my attention was how dedicated PhLUG is in giving budding LEGO MOCers (if I used the term correctly) a chance to show their creations. I’m glad to hear that more than just being an AFOL event, Abrickadabra also encourages children to create and take pride in their MOCs. Here’s a special shout out to Zion, Manuel and Gero for taking time to share and say something about their original LEGO builds. These kids will be a part of Abrickadabra’s Junior Builders where children age 12 and below will a have a spot in sharing their original LEGO creations. Here’s a sampling of what these kids can do.

Picture 2 Picture 4 Picture 6 IMG 20170509 155331 IMG 20170509 155323 IMG 20170509 153034

To my surprise, present also during the press event was builder Mark Gotidoc whose LEGO Ideas entry, the LEGO Brickheadz Inside Out, was once featured in our list of 7 LEGO Brickheadz MOCs that will win your hearts. It was a pleasure chatting with him and learning more about his LEGO Ideas project. If you wish to support him as well as I do, you may head over at the LEGO Ideas website and cast your vote.

Picture 19 IMG 20170509 152931

Other event highlights include a Vintage LEGO Corner where well preserved, LEGO classic sets from the 60s till the 80s will be put on display.

IMG 20170509 155229 IMG 20170509 155239 IMG 20170509 155210 IMG 20170509 155219

Sascha Olik, one of the most prolific LEGO builders in the country, will also be adding fun to the event by exhibiting his original Super Dimension Fortress Macross LEGO creation. The sheer scale and accuracy of this build – weighed in at 11,000 pieces of LEGO bricks – is absolutely stunning.

IMG 20170509 152846

If these fascinating LEGO creations have piqued your interest for Abrickadabra 2017, then you might be thrilled to know more about the rest of the activities that PhLUG has lined up for this event. I’ll be covering that in my next instalment so be sure to keep tabs with us. So if you happen to be in Manila as you’re reading this, you might as well block your calendar this Saturday and pay a visit at the Promenade Hall in Greenhills, San Juan, Manila. Tickets will be sold at the venue for Php100, or roughly $2 each, and you may follow PhLUG’s official Facebook page for more updates leading to the event.

Special thanks to Piper and Chestnut for the rest of the photos.

LEGO Teams Up With Sainsbury’s to Bring The LEGO Create The World Card Trading Game in the UK.

Here’s another reason to be thankful if you’re a LEGO fan residing in the UK. Since the beginning of this month, LEGO’s partnership with one the country’s largest retail store and supermarket chain, Sainsbury’s, has proven to be quite successful. As an off-shoot of their April LEGO exclusive with the LEGO Creator Create the World (40256) 3-in-1 set, Sainsbury’s launched a collectible trading card tie-in that follows the adventures of minifigures Sam and Lily as they travel around the globe, and learn about its beautiful people, cultures, and landscapes.

40256 1 40256 alt1 1024x745

Exclusive at Sainsbury’s stores, the LEGO Create the World Collectible Trading Cards features 140 collectible trading cards that you can swap with friends. Mainly intended for KFOLs (Kid Fans of LEGO), the trading cards are roughly divided into two categories: the Minifigure Cards and Create Cards.

CTWCards e1493392898819

The Minifigure Cards, as the name suggests, are based on LEGO’s CMF series, most likely until Series 16. There are 105 Minifigure cards which I suppose to have been selected randomly across the CMF series. Each Minifigure Card also includes a bit of trivia on each of them. The Create Cards, on the other hand, has a metallic look and feel to it, featuring 35 building activity cards. The Create Cards are based on the build suggestions that goes with several LEGO Classic sets such as the Creative Bricks (10692), Creative Supplement (10693), Creative Building Set (10702), Creative Builder Box (10703), Creative Box (10704), Medium Creative Brick Box (10696), Large Creative Brick Box (10698), and Creative Building Basket (10705).

js nfcarousel4 lego 847x568 e1495626315397

More than just for trading, the Create the World Collectible Cards also offers several classic games that children will love. Using these cards, kids can play Rock, Paper, Scissors by following the symbols found at the upper right hand corner of each Minifigure Card. Each player will draw a certain number of cards and will randomly select from his/her hand and see if s/he has the winning card. Players can tweak the game a bit to suit the number of players, or just be creative with the game’s mechanics.

js nfcarousel2 lego 847x568 e1495626379139

Kids (and perhaps adults as well) can also play Dominoes using the back side of the cards. If you noticed, each card features two strips of 1×3 LEGO bricks of varying colors on the back. Each player starts with 20 cards each, and places a card face down. The next player then finds a card with a matching LEGO piece to create a 2×3 LEGO brick, the next player does the same, keeping in mind that connected cards should not overlap.

Finally, you have the Create Cards that offer building challenges for players to work with. With LEGO bricks at hand, kids can have hours of fun of figuring out how to create these builds. Players are free to make their own rules and mechanics to create a more engaging and fun game.

Sainsbury’s is giving a pack of 4 cards for free for every single receipt purchase of £10, both online and through their supermarkets. For the collector in you, there is also the option of buying a Booster Card Pack containing 4 cards which sell at 50p/pack. Another welcome add-on is the inclusion of a LEGO Collector’s Album where you can store all 140 cards in the series. It goes for sale at £2 and it features brightly colored pages that show the adventures of Sam and Lily as they trek across the globe.

Since this is clearly a retailer’s promotional exclusive, it is highly unlikely that the LEGO Create the World Collectible Cards will ever reach North America. So if you have friends living in the UK, you may want to recommend that they do their shopping over at Sainsbury, especially that the promo will run only until June 13. You may also check Sainsbury’s website for more details.

So what do you think brick fans? Will you be collecting these cards if given the chance?

Here’s Your Chance to Build Your Very Own LEGO Star Wars Detention Block Rescue Set.

Some of us may resent the fact that LEGO can be cruel when it comes to certain ‘exclusives’ (more so if you’re not one of those blessed souls who managed to get their hands on a Star Wars Celebration limited edition set). However, the appeal of having a very unique set of your own as a memento can sometimes be overwhelming.  So what will you do if you were not fortunate enough to be even selected to purchase this exclusive set? Bricklink your way through it. Thanks to Brickfinder, we now have our chance to come up with our own LEGO Star Wars Detention Block Rescue set. For the 40th anniversary of the Star Wars saga and that of Star Wars Episode IV in particular, LEGO opted to come up with a set straight from a scene in Episode IV – A New Hope and offer it exclusively in this year’s Star Wars Celebration in Orlando. An opportunity to own the prized set for non-attendees of the SW Celebrations opened up when LEGO offered a raffle via its Twitter page. Though the response from LEGO Star Wars fans were somehow positive regarding the Detention Block Rescue set, quite frankly, this vignette can easily be built by finding the pieces over at Bricklink.

001 feature facebook

Thanks to AFOL Steve Peacock, who was kind enough to share the set’s parts list and building instructions, we now have a chance to build this set. As mentioned, the set comes with very common pieces that you can find save for the Flat Tile 1×1 No.166 which can be found on some recent LEGO City sets such as the Pizza Van (60150) and Policeman With Cookie and Stinger (40175) polybag. Check out the list below and see if you can have all the LEGO pieces to build the Detention Block Rescue.

You may download the building instructions in PDF format right here. Stephen was fortunate enough to have this set and offers his review as you can see below.

Were you able to have this LEGO SWCO exclusive? Let us know in the comments below.

The Exclusive LEGO Star Wars Detention Block Rescue Can Be Yours via LEGO’s Twitter Page!

Star Wars Celebration 2017 in Orlando has begun, and LEGO is definitely not missing out on the excitement of the occasion.  A few days ago, LEGO has unveiled this year’s Star Wars Celebration exclusive which is a fitting nod to the very first Star Wars film ever made 40 years ago. The LEGO Star Wars Detention Block Rescue is a special-edition exclusive inspired by the Detention Block AA-23 from the original 1977 film Episode IV – A New Hope. However, this unnumbered set is not that easy to acquire. LEGO has made this so exclusive that you have to be physically present at the SW Celebrations, and even having the chance of purchasing it there must be raffled off (which have started already by the way).

So for those who cannot make it in Orlando and is still hoping to have a piece of the Star Wars Celebration with them in LEGO, there is good news. LEGO, via its Twitter page, has just announced another raffle where you can get the chance of owning the LEGO Star Wars Detention Block Rescue. You can go through the lengthy rule book right here, or you can just simply retweet this post from the official LEGO Twitter page as you can see below. No purchase is necessary to enter the raffle.

To enter the Prize Giveaway, follow the instructions on the LEGO Twitter Website To enter, simply RT (ReTweet) clearly designated competition tweets posted by @LEGO_Group during the entry period. Potential Winners will be chosen by random draw from among all eligible entries received, to be conducted by members of the LEGO Social Media Team. Random Drawings occur daily during the entry period.

May the Force be with us (and bring home the prize)! Star Wars Celebration 2017 in Orlando is now happening at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida and runs until Easter Sunday on the 16th. For everything awesome built out of LEGO bricks, be sure to stop by the LEGO booth (#2630) and for other cool Star Wars toys and stuff, be sure to check out Wildcard Toys’ booth near the stage of the Convention Center.

If you recall, we first knew about the Milano’s LEGO micro-scale version when we first featured it in February. True to form and coming in at 64 pieces, the Mini Milano is a perfect replica of its larger cousin as seen in the LEGO Marvel Superheroes The Milano vs. The Abilisk (76081).

May 4 to 7: Free R2-D2 (30611) polybag set with a LEGO Star Wars Purchase of $50 + Double VIP Points.

r2 lego store calendar may 2017 1

The highly sought after buildable R2-D2 polybag set is the Star Wars promotional highlight for next month, in line with the movie franchise’s 40th anniversary. A healthy amount of interest surrounded the most popular droid on the planet, especially now that he comes as a sought after, brick-built collectible. For me, it is a better deal as compared to previous years’ SW minifigure promotional. It is also wise to assume that this polybag set will go out fast because of the very limited window of opportunity in which it will be offered.

To spice things up, LEGO is throwing in another round of Double VIP points throughout the week on ALL LEGO Star Wars sets, plus discounts on selected ones. On a side note, the UCS Snowspeeder is not included on the list of sale items. However, if you’re holding back on your purchase of the Battle of Scariff (75171) and Y-Wing Starfighter (75172), next month is the best time to get them since both sets will earn you 50 bonus VIP points if you purchase them in May.

May 4: Special Star Wars Events in Stores!

Throughout the whole day, children ages 6-14 may visit any LEGO Store dressed up in their favorite Star Wars character and join in the Search & Find activity where participants can receive a pair of collectible Yoda ears (not sure how it will look like though, maybe a cap of some sorts?). In the afternoon at 5PM, participants will also get a chance to participate in a minifigure speed build challenge where the fastest builder will receive a free minifigure. Participation in the minifig speed build challenge may require registration so be sure to ask a Brick Specialist.

Right after the buildable R2-D2 promotional, comes the FREE LEGO Marvel Supeheroes GOTG Vol. 2 Milano (30499) polybag. Though this polybag set will be available for a longer promotional period as compared to R2, better expect this one to fly out of the shelves quickly as well.

On Mother’s Day, come in and build a spring inspired Tulip (40039) mini build that you get to take home for FREE. This event is for VIP members and intended for ages 6 to 14 years old. Registration is required so be sure to inquire at your nearest LEGO Store.

Interestingly, the LEGO Store May Calendar also gives us a peek at some LEGO Duplo sets (Flo’s Café 10846 and Thunder Hollow Crazy 8 Race 10744) dedicated to Disney’s Cars 3, just before it debuts in cinemas in August. Starting May, several Minecraft, Elves, Star Wars, and Marvel Superheroes sets will also be available so be sure to check them out.

Buildable LEGO Star Wars R2-D2 (30611) Polybag Set Off To Be This Year’s May the 4th Promo.

Last January, we previously reported on the possibility that another Star Wars polybag is set up to be this year’s May the 4th promotional. Thanks to The Brick Fan, we now have word that this is most likely the case. Based on a tip from one of their readers, it was said that the brick-built LEGO Star Wars R2-D2 (30611) polybag will be available for free during the May the 4th celebrations for a minimum purchase of $75 at all LEGO Brand stores and online.

01 Lego 30611 R2 D2 Minifigure Polybag 02 Lego 30611 R2 D2 Minifigure Polybag

It is somehow different from last year’s promotional where we got the LEGO Star Wars First Order Stormtrooper (30602) minifigure polybag. Reception for the said minifig was not all smiles and praises to say the least, and hopefully this year’s promo will make up for all of that. It is expected that this year’s buildable R2-D2 will be a more welcomed promotional – an eBay posting from January saw the 30611 auctioned for the insane price of $100. Building instructions for the R2-D2 polybag is also available online in case you want to give it a try ahead of May.

Expect an official word from LEGO once the LEGO Store Calendar for May 2017 is released next week. So what do you think about this year’s LEGO May the 4th promotional? Do you think this is a better deal as compared to previous ones?

LEGO Uniqlo Promotionals Are Back.

A year ago, we featured Uniqlo’s awesome line-up of LEGO inspired shirts that comes with a cool bunch of LEGO promotionals. This time around, Uniqlo teams up with the Danish toy maker once again to provide every LEGO fan at heart the life wear that suits their personality. The good news is that for residents in the US, these latest line up of LEGO Uniqlo shirts is now offered for a discounted price of as much as 35% off if you order them online. Check out these fine prints and see what suits your LEGO style.

In related news, LEGO fans in the Philippines may probably have a better deal on these Uniqlo shirts. Uniqlo Philippines have just announced another LEGO promotional similar to what they did last year when they gave away a free LEGO mini monthly build for every purchase of 1 LEGO Uniqlo shirt. This time around, several FREE polybags from 2016’s LEGO City line are up for grabs when you buy a LEGO Uniqlo shirt beginning March 27 to April 14 or until supplies last.

These free polybags include: Prison Island Helicopter (30346), Fire Car (30347), Mini Dumper (30348), and Sports Car (30349). Personally, I prefer this year’s promotional as compared from the previous one. These selections of polybags will be a very nice addition to any LEGO City MOC that you are planning to do.

Here’s Your Chance to Dunk the LEGO Gingerbread Man Minifigure (5005156) In Your Shopping Basket This December

If you’re keen in following various LEGO Store promotionals, then you’ll probably recall that the LEGO December Store Calendar comes with another minifigure freebie that is hard to ignore. This month, starting December 12 until 18, LEGO Store shoppers (both in-store and online) will receive a FREE LEGO Gingerbread Man (5005156) minifigure for purchases of $50 and above.

Gingerbread Man Minifigure

LEGO has already uploaded images of this promotional via its servers and it confirms that the said minifigure exclusive will be offered in a packaging similar to that of TRU’s LEGO Chicken Suit Guy minifigure (5004468) promotional. Take a closer look.

Gingerbread Man Minifigure

If you missed on the little guy when he first made his appearance back in 2013 under LEGO’s Collectible Minifigures Series 11 (71002), this is your chance to definitely have him without feeling your way at any blind bag. Though it’s a nice touch to wrap him in a cardboard gingerbread house, I would be happier if LEGO took the extra mile by including his witty ‘Dunk Me’ mug accessory. They were able to add a sword accessory in TRU’s earlier promotional back in October which is a LEGO Ninjago Stone Armor Cole (5004393) minifigure so I guess it will not be difficult to do the same again. Nevertheless, it’s the holidays so having the little Gingerbread Man minifigure back again for FREE is a much-welcomed gift.

5005156 alt2

Now is also a good time to finish that Christmas LEGO shopping list that you’ve been working on especially that from December 12 to 20, LEGO will be offering FREE express saver shipping on any order of $35 and more. Take note that December 20 at noon is the last time to place an order online if you wish to have it arrive just in time for Christmas. Check for full details.
