LEGO Super Mario 64 Question Mark Block (71395) Has One (Secret) Replicated Level to Reveal

From a week before, we got the first look at the most surprising LEGO Super Mario set released yet. Initially teased as just a big yellow question-mark block, it was actually an encapsulated tribute to “Super Mario 64.” The Super Mario 64 Question Mark Block (71395) was a diorama of several levels from the 1997 Nintendo 64 “Mario” title. They unfold for display from the box then fold back inside for storage. Ten microfigures populate the four “Mario 64” levels depicted in the set. Or at least that was what the official promotion fluff and LEGO online product listing say.

As Brick Fanatics puts it, LEGO has pulled a fast one on its Super Mario set collectors. Recall those four “Mario 64” levels displayed on the promotional pictures? They were actually missing one, a fifth level from the N64 game. Actually, if one looks at some of the pictures closely, like below, they might have realized this. See that curious partly-open flap in front of the question-mark block, while the other game levels are opened? Brick Fanatics confirm excited reports from early reviewers of this LEGO Super Mario set. The front of the block opens to reveal a buildable King Bowser, Mario’s bad guy. And the flap underneath reveals the fifth featured “M64” game level.

71395 alt2

Unlike the earlier four (Peach’s Castle, Bob-omb Battlefield, Cool Cool Mountain, Lethal Lava Trouble), this is a boss level. That explains why Bowser is present to open it up. His buildable form easily towers over the 10 microfigures included in the set (especially the 3-piece micro-Mario). We thought the initial reveal of Mario 64 Question Mark Block (71395) surprised everything out of us. We were wrong. Bravo, LEGO. You’ve generated some sure-fire “must-buy” frenzy for this “Super Mario” set when it releases this October 1.

LEGO Super Mario 64 Question Mark Block (71395) Given Epic Reveal

Have you ever had all your guesses about a teased product come true? Say a company gives a product teaser with minimal details. You and your buddies’ speculations offer multiple possibilities on what that product actually is. Then somebody asks, “What if the product really is just what we saw?” And it gets followed by something like “What if it’s all of them?” Well LEGO the day before, teased a new LEGO Super Mario set and showed…a brick-built Question Mark block from the franchise. We offered our own guesses as to what the set is. And technically it was all of the above. Well, I guess the guessing game finally ends here with the official reveal of the LEGO Super Mario 64 Question Mark Block (71395).

LEGO Super Mario 64 Question Mark Block

So yes, that LEGO Super Mario set numbered 71395 is officially revealed. It wasn’t a Princess Peach Castle, although that’s part of it. The Mushroom Kingdom setting is there, but it was only a part of it as well. It was aesthetically based on the legendary Nintendo 64 title “Super Mario 64,” but again, it’s not just that. The set is the Question Mark block from the teaser, but it’s the container for everything else in there. We tip our hats to LEGO for their LEGO Super Mario 64 Question Mark Block set (71395). Our surprise was well-generated.

Here’s what to expect from this set as per LEGO Shop@Home

Rekindle fond memories as you build, display, and play with the LEGO® Super Mario 64™? Block (71395). Twenty-five years on from the launch of the Super Mario 64 video game, this set features a brick-built? Block that opens to reveal instantly recognizable levels from the game: Peach’s Castle, Bob-omb Battlefield, Cool, Cool Mountain, and Lethal Lava Trouble. There are also 10 microfigures of iconic characters to place in the detailed scenes.

Interactive play
A delightful gift for any Super Mario fan, the set comes with step-by-step building instructions. For interactive play, add a LEGO® Mario™ or LEGO® Luigi™ figure from the 71360/71387 Starter Courses (sold separately) and collect 10 hidden Power Stars to reveal secret reactions and more.

Limitless possibilities
The LEGO Super Mario range includes Starter Courses, Expansion Sets, and Power-Up Packs, allowing builders to expand, rebuild and create unique levels.

  • Pay tribute to the classic Super Mario 64™ video game in LEGO® style with this brick-built version of the ? Block (71395) for display and interactive play.
  • Includes 10 LEGO® Super Mario™ microfigures: Mario, Yoshi, Princess Peach, and King Bob-omb, as well as a Chain Chomp, Big Bully, Mr. I, Lakitu, penguin, and baby penguin.
  • The ? Block measures over 7 in. (18cm) high, wide, and deep, and opens to reveal 4 detailed Super Mario 64™ levels: Peach’s Castle, Bob-omb Battlefield, Cool, Cool Mountain, and Lethal Lava Trouble.

71395 alt27

Got that? It’s indeed more than a micro-scale diorama of the SM64 Mushroom Kingdom with microfigures that pack into a brick-built block. Remember the gimmick with the LEGO Super Mario NES set (71374)? Stick your LEGO Mario or Luigi (from sets 71360 and 71387 respectively) on the assembled SM64 Question Mark Block (71395). It’s another interactive surprise! Ten Power Stars are hidden in the dioramas, and the battery-powered LEGO Mario Brothers can find them. It’s incredibly mind-blowing.

And yes, it’s coming this October 1. This is definitely a priority buy for LEGO, Nintendo, and Super Mario fans/collectors.

LEGO Teases a New LEGO Super Mario Set

LEGO Super Mario has got to be one of the most successful “new” licensed IPs to get LEGO representation. While fans have been building Mario-themed stuff for years, it wasn’t until 2020 that LEGO and Nintendo made things official. Since then, the new sets have just kept coming. With a battery-powered buildable LEGO Super Mario character as a centerpiece, the new line has captured fans from multiple generations. And the blitz is not quite over. Back in July, there was talk of a Princess Peach Castle set becoming a direct-to-consumer release later this year. A new teaser has rekindled the speculations, setting the stage for the imminent arrival of what could be a new LEGO Super Mario set.

Well okay – the 22-second teaser on LEGO’s official Twitter page mentions no castles. It’s really just a dramatic camera pan on a shadowed brick-built Super Mario question mark cube. The ending with the text “We’ve got a ‘?’ for you” does make the mind-gears spin.

Is LEGO going to reveal that Princess Peach Castle (71395) now? Is the 3D presentation of the question mark cube cluing that the next set homages one of Nintendo’s later-gen/3D “Mario” titles? Or is the upcoming set…just that featured brick-built cube? It would be an epic anticlimax if that’s the case.

German LEGO news site Promobricks does have a theory that sort of combines some of the above possibilities. They posit that the set does depict Princess Peach’s castle, but as part of a larger environment: the Mushroom Kingdom. Next, the design of this Mushroom Kingdom takes after Super Mario 64, the hit 1996 Nintendo 64  Mario game. Promobricks even has a possible price tag of $169.99 for whatever LEGO’s been teasing. And since many upcoming LEGO releases are scheduled for October 1, this too is the proposed date. Will this LEGO Super Mario prediction pan out? We’ll see next time.

Check Out This List of Retiring LEGO Sets For H1 2021

As LEGO began to roll out its wave of new sets this 2nd half of 2021, it is also expected that the company will begin clearing out from its shelves (both from its physical stores and online) several of its previous sets that are expected to reach its end of life very soon. Retiring LEGO sets are almost always of particular interest to the LEGO fan community, considering that most of us still have that one set that we are looking forward to ticking out from our LEGO must-have bucket list. And recently, Stone Wars have released a very comprehensive list of all the retiring LEGO sets that are expected to quietly exit or may have exited already, from LEGO stores and online, during the 1st half of this year.

The list of these retiring LEGO sets for H1 2021 is presented here.  In case you’re interested, you may click on the following LEGO Shop@Home affiliate links below to check out their current availability. Some of these sets may be temporarily out of stock or tagged as already sold out as I’ve checked a while ago as of this posting. Nevertheless, it is still helpful to check if your expected LEGO set is still included in this listing.

Just a disclaimer though – like previously retired LEGO sets, this list is not 100% accurate considering how fast these retiring LEGO sets might sell out. So I encourage you to do a quick search over at LEGO Shop@Home. A huge thanks to Stone Wars once again for sharing and verifying this list.

LEGO Super Mario Peach’s Castle (71395) Rumored to be the Next D2C Set

Word from brick street is that the highly successful LEGO Super Mario theme is getting its next direct-to-consumer (D2C) following the likes of the LEGO Super Mario Nintendo Entertainment System (71374). According to several reliable sources, we can expect the arrival of the LEGO Super Mario Peach’s Castle (71395) in the last quarter of this year, with speculations of its arrival reinforced by an unlikely source.

As noted by German LEGO fan site Stone Wars, the possibility of another castle-themed LEGO set is further hinted upon by a new LEGO piece that is made available via LEGO’s Replacement Parts services. Element 6152409 or a white version of the 1×2 White Masonry Brick (98283) has been listed on the said service.

The LEGO Replacement Parts Service lists element 6152409, a white variant of the masonry brick 98283.

Prior to this listing, however, there has been a rumor going around LEGO fan communities that a new LEGO Super Mario set is in the works, and it will feature another iconic castle from the Super Mario universe. But unlike other large sets under the theme such as the Bowser’s Castle Boss Battle (71369) set, this upcoming D2C set is not strictly a part of the theme’s expansion sets but more like the brick-built Nintendo Entertainment System (71374).  The discovery of the new 1×2 White Masonry brick gives further credence to the rumor of a Peach’s Castle set considering that the set follows a white and red color scheme made up mostly of masonry bricks. Though it’s not the actual set, a LEGO MOC created by Instagram user s.cossy might give us an idea of how this D2C set might turn out.

I know that this is speculative as of the moment, and details of this possible set are scant as of the moment. But what we do know as of this point is that the LEGO Super Mario Peach’s Castle (71395) is expected to retail for € 169.99 as per Price Vortex making it the 2nd most expensive set under the theme, just a notch lower than the LEGO Super Mario NES. We can also guess that it will most probably clock in at around 1,500 to 2,000 pieces given this price point.

Like any other rumors, it is wise to consider this with a grain of salt, and let’s just hope that LEGO will make an announcement any time soon.

LEGO Super Mario Bowser’s Airship (71391) Makes an Appearance

Third-party retailers are at it again with its unintended LEGO spills and leaks, and this time around Amazon Australia has given us a pretty good first look at a new and massive LEGO Super Mario Bowser’s Airship (71391).

LEGO Super Mario Bowser's Airship

This latest addition to the Nintendo-inspired theme seems to join the rest of the LEGO Super Mario summer 2021 sets, including its recently revealed Character Pack Series 3 (71394). Based on the following images and like other expansion sets before it, this LEGO version of Bowser’s Airship will also include play features that allow it to be connected to either the Mario or Luigi Starter Sets. The build itself has an expandable stern and bow, which is pretty cool actually. The set is based on Bowser’s flying fortress and includes brick-built versions of Rocky Wrench, Pirate Goomba, and Yoshi’s arch-enemy, the iconic Kamek the Magikoopa.

Clocked at 1,152 pieces, this next LEGO offering will retail at around $100 once it is available for retail on August 1, 2021. I will update this post once more information comes in or once it is listed over at LEGO Shop@Home.

UPDATE: As of this posting, the product listing for the LEGO Super Mario Bowser’s Airship has been removed from Amazon’s Australian shopping portal. It definitely looks like someone was way too excited to reveal this set.

Here’s a Sneak Peek at the LEGO Super Mario Character Pack Series 3 (71394)

Though this latest series of Character Packs are not yet listed at LEGO.com, this social media reveal allows us to have a glimpse of the 10 brick-built Super Mario characters that will be included in this wave.

More Details on What to Expect From LEGO CON 2021

LEGO is all set to launch its first-ever online fan convention dubbed as LEGO CON. And after an initial teaser last week, LEGO is slowly building the hype by giving us a glimpse of the many things to expect once the virtual convention commences on June 26.

LEGO’s tweet hints at the various set announcements that are about to happen on LEGO CON. The most noticeable of this is understandably coming from the LEGO Star Wars front. I feel that it may lean towards the reveal of the LEGO Star Wars UCS Republic Gunship, which was ultimately selected by most fans during the LEGO Ideas Fan Vote back from February last year. There will also be a detailed presentation on the latest LEGO Super Mario sets for the 2nd half of the year, including the new Adventures With Luigi Starter Course (71387) and a host of others.  I’m not really sure what LEGO has in mind with its LEGO Technic and Harry Potter presentations, but my best guess is that it might include possible building activities (competition perhaps) involving some of the new sets under these themes. Newer LEGO City sets will also be placed under the spotlight, especially since LEGO has invited an astronaut to grace the occasion. And those fans who will be watching online will also have the chance to participate in a live Q&A with designers of the LEGO Minecraft theme, and with Mojang’s Chief Brand Officer, Ms. Lydia Winters.

We can also be sure that LEGO has plenty of surprises in store during that 90-minute presentation. This includes the promise of more exclusive set reveals and other amazing guests. I’m still dwelling on the thought that the LEGO CON’s 2×2 brick logo may still have a connection to any sets, or activities that will be featured during the free, live online event. So be sure to mark June 26 on your calendars, and check your corresponding local time. For more updates, visit and bookmark the LEGO CON website.

More LEGO Super Mario Summer 2021 Sets Arriving Soon

It looks like we have confirmation on how LEGO intends to expand its 2021 portfolio of LEGO Super Mario sets, following the now-deleted listing from Romanian online store Auchan. Thanks to this tip, we now have an idea of what LEGO has in store for its LEGO Super Mario summer 2021 collection. This is not an all-inclusive set, and we can expect additional information to come out any time soon.

In the meantime, what we know is that we will be getting another expansion set in the form of a brick-built version of the Lakitu Heavenly World. It will feature Lakitu, Bullet Bill and Fuzzy, and will expect to retail for $40. We can also expect two new Power-Up costumes for Mario in the form of Frog Mario and Bee Mario each retailing for $10 similar to its predecessors. And finally, LEGO is further adding more characters in our LEGO Super Mario Adventures with its Series 3 Character Packs. This next wave of 10 blind bags includes Torpedo Ted, Bony Beetle, 1-Up, Scuttlebug, Parachute Bob-omba, Galoomba, Swoop, Boo, Amp, and Crowber.

There’s a good possibility that we can hear an official reveal from LEGO anytime soon, considering that this info has already been shared with third-party retailers. I’ll keep you posted once more related news comes in about this wave of LEGO Super Mario summer 2021 sets.

Huge thanks to @1414falconfan for the heads-up.
