It seems that LEGO still has a handful of surprises in store for us coming from its LEGO Super Mario line. Slovakian online store Svetmodelov, has listed four LEGO Super Mario outfits sets to watch out for in August.
A screenshot of the LEGO Super Mario outfits listed at Svetmodelov.
There’s no further info about these sets, save for their loosely translated titles, and expected retail price.
Fire Mario Outfit (71370)
Flying Mario Outfit (71371)
Cat Mario Outfit (71372)
Builder Mario Outfit (71373)
Action Cubes (71361)
From the get-go, these titles suggest that the brick-built Mario figure that comes with the Starter Course (71360) will be having a handful of outfits or costumes the way the video game intends it to be. And based on their listed price of approximately 10€ each, we can probably expect that this will include an exclusive LEGO piece for the costume (since the main figure seems to sport a removable lower torso) and several LEGO pieces to accentuate it.
Aside from these LEGO Super Mario outfits, there’s also a separate set referred to as Action Cubes (71361). I’m not really sure what these are exactly, but it’s safe to assume that this might be additional interactive cubes given its price range of 4€. As a side note, Build Better Bricks features a collection of superb custom LEGO Mario Cubes that you may want to check out. Watch their video below.
It is clear that LEGO intends this to be one, integrated theme by adding expansion sets to the Starter Course that mimics the overall feel of the classic video game. The LEGO Super Mario outfits and other related sets are slated to be released in August, so we hope to see more details about these expansion sets during the next few weeks.
The announcement of the LEGO Monkie Kid theme has been welcomed positively by LEGO fans, and it appears that there will be an additional polybag set to look forward to. A LEGO Monkie Kid’s Delivery Bike (30341) polybag has been introduced, and I guess its just a matter of time before it lands in US LEGO Stores.
A report from the Brickfinder suggests that a polybag will accompany the new LEGO Monkie Kid theme, similar to other LEGO themes or product series. The said polybag was first spotted during the LEGO Monkie Kid’s Shanghai launch event last May 15 and was subsequently made available at the LEGO brand store in Shanghai for a minimum single-receipt purchase of any LEGO products and merchandise worth RMB369 (roughly $50 and above). Other than the LEGO Monkie Kid’ Delivery Bike (30341) polybag, there were also other exclusive promotional freebies that were given away at the said LEGO Store such as a LEGO Monkie Kid commemorative brick and a LEGO Monkie Kid Storage Head.
The LEGO Monkie Kid’s Delivery Bike (30341) features an alternate version of Monkie Kid wearing his kitchen garb, similar to what you can find in sets such as Pigsy’s Food Truck (80009) and Red Son’s Inferno Truck (80011). The delivery bike itself is a great addition to the overall theme, with its clever, brick-built bamboo steamer attached at the back. The polybag also seems to include a unique printed 1×2 plate, though I really can’t place my finger on what it is looking at the image.
As of to date, this polybag is yet to be seen in LEGO Shop@Home in the US, but my bet is that it might be included as a promotional freebie anytime soon or once the LEGO Store June Calendar is published.
The LEGO Monkie Kid sets are now available, and if you wish to take a closer look at these, you can find a good number of crystal clear images right here. Thanks again to the Brickfinder for the heads up.

Together with the reveal of LEGO’s latest line of LEGO Monkie Kid sets, LEGO also announces a tie-in animated series that chronicles the adventures of our new superhero. Inspired by the classic Chinese story Journey to the West, the LEGO Monkie Kid Animated series will follow the adventures of the Monkie Kid as he comes into terms of his mission to save the world. Watch the series’ video trailer below.
The LEGO Monkie Kid animated series will feature the characters of the hero-in-the-making Monkie Kid, together with Mei, Sandy, and Pigsy as they venture to seek the aid of the Monkey King against the modern-day minions of the show’s chief antagonist, the Demon Bull King.
There is no further info regarding when and where the series will be aired, but we’ll probably get more updates in the coming days. The artwork featured in the LEGO Monkie Kid animated series somehow deviates from LEGO’s usual style of animation, which underscores LEGO’s brand of humor. From the looks of it, the show is a nice fusion of both oriental and modern art concepts that shows an alternate continuity of the 500-year old epic story.
The LEGO Monkie Kid sets are slated to be available globally by tomorrow, May 16, with China, Singapore, Hongkong, and Malaysia having a head start today. Though LEGO Shop@Home in the US is yet to update its servers to include these sets in their listing, fans have been sharing across social media that some US LEGO stores have been selling these sets earlier than expected. Not really sure if these early sales can be considered “official” in a way, but you may want to check with your local LEGO brand store first for product availability. Most of LEGO’s physical stores have opened already so you have the option of doing your in-store purchase. However, due to the on-going pandemic, I do recommend that you exercise due caution in going out and visiting public places. I will still opt for online purchases for my LEGO fix for the time being.
I’ll keep you posted once the product listings for LEGO Monkie Kid sets go live at shop.LEGO.com, so stay tuned. Thanks to The Brothers Bricks for sharing the vid.
LEGO has now officially launched its latest themed sets centered on Chinese folklore and culture. Directly inspired by the classic story Journey to the West, the LEGO Monkie Kid is LEGO’s modern twist to the iconic story of the Monkey King’s legendary tale.
As early as March, rumors have been circulating regarding this theme, with snippets of images (aka leaks) being shared over social media. Truth be told, the theme looks promising, especially with its colorful new characters and builds having a sort of a revamped LEGO Ninjago vibe.
The LEGO Monkie Kid sets will have a worldwide release on LEGO Shop@Home on May 16, with an early release date of May 15, today, in LEGO Stores and LEGOLAND, and LEGOLAND Discovery Centers in Mainland China, Singapore, Malaysia, and Hongkong.
Read the LEGO Group’s full press release below and of course, tons of crisp, official images! They’re still yet to be listed at LEGO Shop@Home so I suggest you keep them under your radar.
LEGO® Monkie Kid™ – a new hero is born, a new story is waiting to unfold
The LEGO Group’s first-ever Chinese inspired theme sees the legend of the Monkey King from the classic Journey to the West novel reimagined in LEGO sets and minifigures
[May 15th, 2020] Inspired by the 500-year-old story of the Monkey King, LEGO Monkie Kid is the LEGO Group’s take on a new, untold chapter of the legendary tale. Featuring eight exciting sets, an animated mini movie and TV series, LEGO Monkie Kid is the first ever LEGO theme to be inspired by a Chinese legend and is rooted firmly in the country’s culture and values. The theme’s sets are packed with fun, excitement and an epic story just waiting to unfold…
The tale begins when an ordinary boy, Monkie Kid, finds Monkey King’s legendary staff and he becomes the chosen one. Together with his brave and loyal friends, Monkie Kid begins his quest to stop the Demon Bull King and his army of Bull Clones from taking over the city.
Paying tribute to stories known and admired by so many children and parents in China and Asia, this latest LEGO play theme brings new life to the iconic Monkey King fable and provides a common ground for children, parents and grandparents to build and play together.
“I am super excited about the launch of LEGO Monkie Kid. This fantastic new play theme is deeply inspired by Chinese culture and built on an esteemed story that is treasured by all generations. We know kids will be delighted by the world of LEGO Monkie Kid, and I can’t wait to see how they immerse themselves in building, role playing and creating new stories through this theme. This is a very exciting innovation for the LEGO brand and one that demonstrates our commitment to building a strong future in China,” says Julia Goldin, Chief Marketing Officer at the LEGO Group.
With a modern Chinese twist, LEGO Monkie Kid celebrates bravery and friendship and lets children engage in great building experiences whilst helping them to develop their imagination and creativity. Paul Huang, General Manager of LEGO China, says: “The launch of Monkie Kid is another important milestone in our journey to provide the creative LEGO play experience to many more Chinese children. Deeply rooted in Chinese culture, the new theme line is created with inspiration from China, for China, and at the same time empowers children around the world to be brave, resilient and optimistic through creative play with LEGO bricks.”
Children can look forward to eight action-packed sets with colourful characters, impressive vehicles with exciting new and hidden features – plus a blue cat with an orange mohawk! The sets are a result of two years of close collaboration with children and parents in China to ensure they are authentic to local culture. Never before has the LEGO Group launched a theme inspired by one culture and with so much attention to local details, values and traits.
“I have been touched and inspired by China’s rich history and culture, the passion and pride of the people and the incredible creativity of China. It has been an honour and privilege to be able to immerse myself in China’s culture of storytelling, in particular – Journey to the West and the Monkey King. The epic stories and incredible characters have been a huge inspiration to the LEGO design team and me. It is with deepest respect for Chinese culture and the 500-year-old legend that we have created the next chapter in the story of the Monkey King – The Monkie Kid,” says Simon Lucas, Senior Design Director at the LEGO Group.
LEGO Monkie Kid will launch on May 16th on LEGO.com, in LEGO stores*, LEGOLAND and LEGOLAND Discovery Centers with early access for:
China mainland from May 15th in LEGO stores, LEGOLAND Discovery Centers, and TMall Flagship stores only.
Singapore, Malaysia, and Hong Kong from May 15th in LEGO stores, and LEGOLAND Discovery Centers only.
In markets still under COVID-19 government regulations, our LEGO stores will remain closed until government guidelines change. Some LEGO stores are reopening. To find out if a LEGO store is open, please reach out to LEGO Customer Service: https://www.LEGO.com/service/
I appreciate what LEGO Ideas did here, especially that most of us are required to stay at home. The LEGO Ideas platform has launched another contest that helps us look forward to that great summer vacation, in spite of the on-going pandemic. The LEGO Ideas Build That Holiday Into That Holiday contest is now accepting entries beginning last week, May 8. Read on for the contest details.
This next LEGO Ideas contest is kind of unique compared to other previous ones because it specifically challenges builders to limit their creation using only 150 t0 250 LEGO pieces.
Your dream holiday… What does that look like? Is it enjoying a meal with friends and family? Is it exploring coral reefs in tropical waters? In this contest, we’re asking you to come up with a small model that helps turn that holiday into THAT holiday. It could be a rowing boat to go fishing in, a picnic bench to enjoy a BBQ with. Use your own holidays or your dream holidays as inspiration!
The only restrictions are that your model should be at most 250 bricks, with a minimum of 150 bricks.
The only unlimited aspect of the contest is that you can choose any of your dream holidays to be rendered in these limited number of bricks.
And of course, the prizes awaiting the winners for this LEGO Ideas Build That Holiday contest are surely worth the time and effort. The winning entry will have the honor of being transformed into a new LEGO Gift-With-Purchase (GWP) set in the near future. And on top of this, the Grand Prize winner (to be announced on July 7, 2020) will also bring home these premium LEGO sets and goodies.
Be sure to have your bricks ready and to submit your entry not later than June 12. You may read the complete set of contest rules and guidelines right here. So what dream vacation do you have in mind? Let us know what you think and happy building!
LEGO has released a designer video for the LEGO Haunted House (10273) that gives us a tour on the inner workings of this fairground themed, brick-built funhouse. Watch the video below.
LEGO designers Carl Merriam, Mike Psiaki, Austin Carlson, and Niek van Slagmaat lead us to the many beautiful details of this 3,000+ set and some of the pretty neat throwbacks that older LEGO fans will enjoy.
As mentioned in their press release, the LEGO Haunted House (10273) is the first set LEGO set that officially drops the Creator Expert branding in favor of the 18+ reclassification. LEGO believes that this will make similar advanced sets more readily identifiable as something belonging to the adult fan base of LEGO.
And the LEGO Haunted House places all the check marks on an AFOL’s LEGO nostalgic sweet spots. The fairground themed park ride is loaded of references to older LEGO sets such as the Adventurers theme from 1998, the Alpha Team from early 2000, and of course from the classic Castle theme. For those unfamiliar with these LEGO themes, you may head over to Brickset for more info.
To bring all these references into one fun-filled set is short of amazing. I particularly like the idea of how the designers placed an easter egg for Bat Lord from the Fright Knights subtheme. The specially printed, subtle 2×3 flat tile is a pretty neat reference to the LEGO Castle Bat Lord (6007) set, with its set number printed on the said tile in Roman numerals.
Apart from these pretty near references, the LEGO Haunted House is also loaded with play features as any funhouse should be. Its main play feature is its functional drop-down elevator. It’s a pretty challenging task that the LEGO designers managed to pull-off. To make it more realistic, the elevator ride must accelerate while going down, and to eventually slow its drop as it reaches the bottom. The elevator function can either be operated manually or outfitted with an optional LEGO Power-App motor.
And of course, the LEGO Haunted House will not be that spooky without that illuminated portrait of Samuel Von Barron using a light brick. This and other fun details are revealed once you open the set and explore every room of the funhouse.
The LEGO Haunted House (10273) comes in at 3,231 pieces and is expected to retail for $249.99. It is slated for an early release for LEGO VIP members on May 20, and to the rest of the world on June 1, 2020. Head over to LEGO Shop@Home for more details, and while you’re at it you may want to include this set to your LEGO wishlist as well.
So what do you think of this latest LEGO 18+ set? Are you OK with the LEGO Creator Expert re-branding? Let me know what you think in the comments below.
After the official announcement on LEGO’s next 18+ branded set, we now have more info on the LEGO Haunted House (10273) set and what it means to the future of the LEGO Creator Expert theme.
If you noticed starting this year, LEGO has introduced a new “18+” subtheme on its sets targeted specifically for older LEGO fans. From the recently released LEGO Star Wars helmet collection and this year’s UCS set to the LEGO Architecture The White House (21054), all of these sets feature an adult-focused packaging that makes it clear that these line of building sets are for advanced LEGO hobbyists and collectors.
Though the LEGO Star Wars and Architecture themes are still retaining their titles, LEGO Senior Marketing Manager Anders Hellegaard has announced that it will drop the Creator Expert theme entirely in favor of the 18+ re-classification. However, it was also mentioned that the LEGO Haunted House is still part of LEGO’s larger Fairground Collection series which include previously released Creator Expert sets such as the LEGO Roller Coaster (10261) and Carousel (10257) among others, so there is still some unifying element to these sets in the future.
I guess this decision is mainly for aesthetic purposes such as the redesigning of the previous Creator Expert box art moving forward. We can still expect awesome advanced sets later on targeted to an older LEGO fan base who grew up iconic LEGO characters such as Samuel Von Barron, Johhny Thunder, and Bat Lord to name a few.
Here’s LEGO’s official press release for the LEGO Haunted House (10273) for more details. The set comes in at 3,231 pieces and will retail for $249.99 when it is released to LEGO VIP members on May 20 and other LEGO fans on June 1, 2020.
PREPARE TO BE SPOOKED WITH THE BRAND-NEW LEGO® HAUNTED HOUSE SET
The LEGO Group has announced the LEGO Haunted House, a hair-raising new fairground build for adult thrill-seekers – available from 20th May from LEGO.com and LEGO Stores
May 13, 2020– Gear up for a spooky ride and bring to life the ultimate ghostly fairground experience, with the brand-new LEGO® Haunted House set. This latest addition to the LEGO Fairground collection is jam-packed with exciting features to surprise and entertain even the bravest of thrill-seekers.
Modeled on Manor Von Barron, the spooky home of one of the world’s greatest villains – Samuel Von Barron, the new LEGO® Haunted House model is full to the brim with spine-tingling details. Its clever design features a fully functional free-fall ride with automatic doors at the top of the tower, giving brave riders a glimpse of the thrilling plummet to come, as well as intricate ghoulish details such as haunted doors and a cursed painting to warn off any trespassers.
To enhance the spooky experience even further and unlock special features, such as a moving elevator, fans can also add LEGO Powered Up components (available separately) and control and amplify the set as they build via LEGO’s Powered Up app.
The 3,231-piece LEGO® Haunted House model not only makes an impressive and creepy display piece, standing at over 26.5” (68cm) high, 9” (25cm) wide and 9” (25cm) deep but also gives fans the chance to get hands-on and immerse themselves in the ghostly world. LEGO builders can open the model’s exterior and enter the ultimate haunted house to discover the features hidden inside – revealing Von Barron’s extensive collection of stolen artifacts which nod to LEGO brick sets of the past, including the Organ of Catarino and the Orb of OGEL.
This brand-new set has been designed specifically with adults in mind – providing an immersive, creative experience for them to re-focus, re-charge and get creative, whether they’re enjoying alone or as a challenging build with friends or younger builders.
The new LEGO® Haunted House™ construction set is the latest example of how the LEGO Group aims to inspire builders of all ages to build, rebuild, and get excited by the process of creation. It’s also the first set from the LEGO Fairground Collection to feature the new stylish packaging designed to make it easier than ever for adult fans to find their new build challenge based on their individual passions.
Addressing the new packaging, Senior Marketing Manager Anders Hellegaard Iversen said: “So many of our older builders love the Creator Expert products, as they allow them to show off their passion for the bricks. Whether it’s their favorite film moments, sports icons, travel destinations, buildings, fairgrounds, or vehicles, LEGO sets help to bring these to life in brick form. That’s also why we have decided to stop using the Creator Expert branding and, instead, use the new adult-focused packaging design to make it clearer which hobbies or brand products they can relate to. We hope this will make it easier for fans to track down models they would be proud to display once completed. Of course, our product range will continue to include the same advanced-build, collectible products that guarantee hours of building enjoyment for fans.”
The brand-new LEGO Haunted House is available to VIP members from 20th May and for remaining LEGO fans from 1st June, direct from LEGO.com and LEGO Stores.

We’re still months away before we can see the release of the latest LEGO Super Mario sets, and as early as now, more and more info is coming in about this latest LEGO tie-in series.
Thanks to Slovakian online store Automodely, we now have a tentative list of additional LEGO Super Mario sets. If you recall, other than the Adventures with Mario Starter Course (71360), The LEGO Group also unveiled two expansion sets that will go along with it – the Piranha Plant Power Slide (71366) and the Bowser’s Castle Boss Battle (71369). From the get-go, it is clear that LEGO intends the Super Mario theme to be one integral collection of sets that have a kind of game board function with the introduction of expansion sets that add a level of play feature to the Starter Course.
And thanks to Automodely, we now have the following set names (translated via Google) that give us an idea of what to expect from these sets. Please take note that these LEGO Super Mario set names are based on a rough English translation so their official names might be different eventually.
Piranha Attack (71362)
Desert Pokey (71363)
Whomp’s Fortress (71364)
Bullet Bill’s Fire (71365)
Piranha Plant Power Slide (71366)
Mario’s House and Yoshi (71367)
Toad’s Treasure Hunt (71368)
Bowser’s Castle Boss Battle (71369)
The LEGO Super Mario Bowser’s Castle Boss Battle (71369) is an expansion set slated to be released sometime in August.
As noted by The Brick Fan, the listing of these sets on Automodely’s site uses LEGO’s Leaf code name for the Super Mario sets. We do not have any further info on these sets such as their piece count or product descriptions, so we just have to leave it to our imagination to figure out how these sets might look like. However, these sets also give us a hint on the partial repertoire of video characters that LEGO will be throwing in. We have Mario’s spikey cactus enemy in the form of the Pokey; the imposing and snaggletoothed Whomp; the iconic Bullet Bill; and Mario’s reliable allies Yoshi and Toad. As much as I would like to see minifigure versions of these guys, it is clear by now that these Super Mario characters will most probably come in brick-built forms.
Based on these sets’ expected retail price, it seems that next to Bowser’s Castle Boss Battle (71369), it looks like Toad’s Treasure Hunt (71368) is also one sizeable set. As a last note, we can probably expect these sets to be officially announced within the next couple of weeks, so be sure to stay tuned.
