A Look at LEGO at Disney’s D23 Expo 2017.

Disney’s grandest fan event has just concluded, and on the last day of the D23 Expo, LEGO and Disney fans surely had a blast. Held at Anaheim Convention Center in California, Disney made sure that LEGO had a sizeable presence at the convention. With its various reveals such as the new playable character in the person of Homemade Suit Spider-Man in the upcoming video game sequel LEGO Marvel Superheroes 2, and various promotional builds for Spider-Man Homecoming, Toy Story 4, and so much more, LEGO’s vibe is undeniably felt in the air.

00 Spider Man

Though it is expected that next week’s SDCC will create more LEGO-related buzz, these brick-built statues at the D23 Expo knows how to get attention. This life-sized, brick-built statue of Spider-Man as he hangs on a window is definitely for the win. Thanks to DiscussingFilm and Bill Roseman for sharing these images via Twitter.

Get To Build Your Very Own Wonder Woman and Supergirl Mini Models.

If you recall, one of the highlights of the June LEGO Store Calendar is the DC Super Hero Girls Building Event, held on two separate dates. Taking its cue from one of its recent DC Superhero Girls theme, these building events are similar to the LEGO Store’s Monthly Mini Builds where participants are required to register first before being able to participate. Last month, participants who were fortunate enough to register were able to build and bring home a Wonder Woman and/or Supergirl Miniland-scale figure for free

WW LEGO Store May Calendar 2 SG LEGO Store May Calendar 2

This time, in case you missed the event, you can now build your very own DC Superhero Girls exactly as they were offered last June thanks to the building instructions posted by Brickset. It seems that these instructions do not require any special piece or element so they’re relatively easy to build. See if you can sort out through your LEGO collection and try to build these mini-models. I personally like the Supergirl build with the pieces cleverly angled to create her arms and emblem.

Spider-Man Homemade Suit Makes Its Way as a Playable Character in LEGO Marvel Superheroes 2.

LEGO and TT Games recently stirred things up in this year’s largest Disney fan event at the D23 Expo. With their additional reveal of another playable character in the highly anticipated LEGO Marvel Superheroes 2 at the Level Up! Video Game Showcase, it seems that more, never-before-seen LEGO Marvel characters will be included in the game sequel. Following the reveal of Medusa both as a playable character in LEGO Marvel Superheroes 2 and as an impressive brick-built LEGO statue at E3 last month, we now have another LEGO Marvel character that adds to the roster of web-slinging superheroes that you can access in the video game. Homemade Suit Spider-Man is a playable character straight from MCU’s Spider-Man: Homecoming film, with Peter Parker’s signature homemade red hoodie and blue jeans costume.

Homemade Suit Spider-Man seems to be of standard fare as compared to other Spider-Man characters in the game, with the usual web shot ranged and melee combo attacks. Nevertheless, having a character uniquely donned as this one surely adds excitement and fun in the game. Let’s take a look at this gameplay video as revealed at the D23 Expo.

Now that were just a few days away before this year’s San Diego Comic Con officially kicks off, expect more reveals from Warner Bros. and TT Games later on. LEGO Marvel Superheroes 2 launches on November 14 and is now available for pre-order. Get the Deluxe Edition and you’ll get an early access to the Classic Guardians of the Galaxy Character Pack which features playable classic GOTG characters, including Charlie-27, Yondu, Major Vance, and Starhawk among others. Plus, you’ll also be receiving the exclusive Giant-Man minifigure which you can only get when you pre-order the game.

First Wave of 2018 LEGO DC Superheroes Sets Slated to Debut During Next Week’s SDCC 2017.

A couple of weeks ago, I shared a round-up of the most exciting LEGO sets rumored to debut next year. Included in the list are some of LEGO’s most popular themes, including its Superheroes line of sets coming from both Marvel and DC Comics. Thanks to a recent report by Forbes, and just in time for this year’s San Diego Comic Con, we now have confirmation of some of these sets, particularly from DC Comics. According to the report, these sets will be on display at the LEGO Booth at SDCC next week, with price points ranging from $19.99 to $39.99 once it is offered to the public beginning January of 2018.

Comparatively, I find these sets more appealing than LEGO’s offerings from 2016’s SDCC, particularly the LEGO Marvel Hulk vs. Red Hulk (76078) set. This year’s collection of DC themed sets will probably be more attractive to fans given the unique minifigure offerings that each of them has. The sets also feature new, buildable Power Units that may be connected to each other. Furthermore, the sets may also be seamlessly combined together for more imaginative play. I’m not really sure what these Power Units do, but I’ll just have to leave it for everyone’s fancy on how they work or fit together. Here’s a look at our first wave of 2018 LEGO DC Comics Superheroes sets, with their respective product descriptions courtesy of The Brick Fan.

Superman Krypto Team-Up (76096)

Minifigures include Superman, Lobo, and his first ever minifig based on a new mould, Krypto. Though the set’s name implies that it is Superman who will take the center stage, most of the set’s pieces are dedicated to Lobo’s unholy Space Hog bike.

Join Krypto™ the Super-Dog’s bid to release Superman™ with this LEGO® DC Comics Super Heroes Superman & Krypto Team-Up set, featuring Lobo’s Space Hog bike, a Kryptonite prison, buildable red Power Unit and assorted translucent-green Power Burst elements to customize your builds and minifigures. Fire the Space Hog bike’s stud shooters and use its bomb-dropping function to activate the prison’s explode function. This awesome set also includes 2 minifigures and a Krypto the Super-Dog figure.

Lex Luthor Mech Takedown (76097)

This set includes the minifig versions of Lex Luthor, Batman, Wonder Woman, and for the first time, Cheetah and Firestorm. Though we already saw Lex Luthor stomping in his own mechanized LEGO suit back in 2012 with the Superman vs. Power Armor Lex (6862), this newer version of Lex Luthor’s armor is considerably larger and has more weaponry than its predecessor. The newer Lex Luthor Mech also features several new LEGO pieces and my personal favorite, a Firestorm minifig.

76097 1

6097 Lex Luthor™ Mech Takedown – $39.99

Team up with the Justice League heroes to grab the Power Unit back from Cheetah™ with this LEGO® DC Comics Super Heroes Lex Luthor™ Mech Takedown set. • Bat Glider measures over 2” (6cm) high, 1” (3cm) long and 4” (12cm) wide.

Speed Force Freeze Pursuit (76098)

The final set in this reveal includes several characters that will be a sure hit for fans of the red speedster. For the first time ever, both minifig versions of the Flash and Reverse Flash appear in a set, together with Cyborg and the newer Killer Frost. The set is relatively small given its rather high price point. However, throwing in the Reverse Flash may likewise make up for it.

76098 1

Let’s Get Dangerous… with this LEGO BrickHeadz Darkwing Duck Builds!

If there is such a thing as a Golden Age of Saturday morning Disney cartoons, then I will bet my LEGO bricks in that period between the late 80s until the 90s. Growing up in this period of classic cartoons is like falling in love with Disney TV shows for the very first time. One particular show in mind that wooed me in anticipation every week (other than the globe-trottin’ and treasure-seeking adventures of Scrooge McDuck and his posse of feathered-friends in DuckTales), is the high-flying vigilante missions of Darkwing Duck. The fun and fast-paced tone of the show defined an era of Disney morning cartoons that became largely a part of my childhood. If you were not around yet during the heyday of these shows, then I suggest you check out the video below.

Now that Disney XD is off to launch a reboot of DuckTales which will air on August 12, feelings of nostalgia have swept the hearts of most fans of the show. We may no longer be that same wide-eyed kid that sat in front of the TV screen amazed by the adventures of Darkwing Duck and Launchpad McQuack, but our love for the show is still definitely there. Perhaps this is what master builder Okay Yaramanoglu has in mind in creating these LEGO BrickHeadz versions of the show’s characters. Rendered using LEGO Digital Designer (LDD), these versions of Darkwing, Launchpad, Scrooge McDuck and Gizmoduck are all ready to get dangerous.

Darkwing 2 Darkwing 3 Darkwing 1 Darkwing 4

I like the way Scrooge’s spectacles were conveyed using a pair of clear studs, while Launchpad signature lock of orange feathers was cleverly represented by a minifigure headpiece. Most of Yaramanoglu’s BrickHeadz MOCs follows a 90s cartoon theme, including other Disney TV franchises such as Chip n Dale’s Rescue Rangers and TaleSpin. He even created BrickHeadz versions of the classic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles straight from the 80s. These LEGO BrickHeadz MOCs from Yaramanoglu are also his entries for Brickset’s 2017 BrickHeadz Competition. If you’re a fan of this chibi builds, and you wish to submit an entry before the contest’s deadline on August 31, then visiting the contest’s Flickr site may help you draw some inspiration.

Happy building everyone!

DK Announces The LEGO Ninjago Movie: The Making of the Movie.

It seems that The LEGO Ninjago Movie will also receive the same DK treatment as its predecessor. If you recall, The LEGO Batman Movie has also been actively promoted thanks to LEGO’s partnership with Dorling Kindersley (DK) publishing company. With a range of printed media that appeals both to children and adults alike, DK  has been instrumental in stirring further interest for TLBM. One particular book in mind is the LEGO Batman Movie: The Making of the Movie. By far, this is the most comprehensive resource on the workings behind the creation of TLBM, including an inside look at how the brick-built sets were created, and a yet-to-be-verified source of the rumored 2018 wave of LEGO Batman Movie sets. If you wish to have this under your collection of uber cool LEGO books while enjoying great discounts of up to 30%, you may want to check it out over at Amazon.

Similar to TLBM, DK has revealed The LEGO Ninjago Movie: The Making of the Movie, and is expected to be similar to the scope and content of the one before it. It is both listed on Amazon UK and Amazon US, but the former provides us with a look on its cover, and hopefully a few sample pages later on.

TLNM Making

Journey beyond the on-screen world of The LEGO® NINJAGO® MOVIE™

More LEGO Star Wars The Last Jedi Sets Named.

UPDATE: It seems that LEGO is quick to move, and would rather have us look at picture placeholders instead. Sorry guys, have to remove the blurred images on this one.

*********************************

Yesterday, we saw the minifigure listing of this year’s LEGO Star Wars sets under The Last Jedi subtheme. Some of these sets were named already, while others are still shrouded in anonymity, with only their respective set numbers as our point of reference.  While leaked images of these TLJ sets are making its rounds over the Internet, we do not have the slightest idea what these other sets are.

However, this may no longer be the case. Just recently, Star Wars fan site Rebel Scum, managed to acquire not just one, but as it seems, the whole range of LEGO Star Wars The Last Jedi winter set images. Again, let me make it clear that we are not at liberty to show these images here, but I guess it will not hurt to take a peek (albeit, through a very distorted looking glass) so here we go.

LEGO Store Shanghai Exclusive VIP Set Revealed!

Several LEGO Store promotional exclusives have proven to be attractive collectibles in themselves. Other than the fact that they usually come as free items, these LEGO Store exclusives often times represent the unique milieu or cultural heritage of the place where they are offered, making it more appealing to collect.

So it will not come as a surprise (though a very welcomed one, nonetheless) if the LEGO Store in Shanghai, China has something in store for their VIP members. The promotional item, tagged as 40178, is said to be available to VIP members in China some point later this year, as Brickset reports. This set is currently being given away with purchases of over 399 CNY in China, the equivalent of £45.75, $58.75 or €51.30.

40178

Images of this VIP set were also uploaded in Chinese social media site, WeChat, as you can see below. It seems to be a pretty nice build, especially with regards to the creative rendition of the Pick A-Brick Wall, LEGO box sets (though it uses stickers), and the collectible LEGO Store employee minifigure.

We have no word yet if these will also be offered internationally, so for the time being will keep our eyes open for more updates.
