LEGO Technic Top Gear Set Coming in 2020

An interesting piece of news came out this morning, and it’s telling us that LEGO is adding another licensed set in its portfolio. To begin with, LEGO is no stranger in the automotive field with an impressive list of LEGO Technic sets that highlight the most sophisticated vehicles around such as the upcoming LEGO Technic Land Rover Defender (42110) and the superbly elegant Bugatti Chiron (42083). From the looks of it, LEGO is pushing the envelope once more by partnering with one of television’s longest-running, and high-adrenalin motoring entertainment program. BBC Studios just published a press release earlier today underscoring the venture that the British TV company and The LEGO Group will jointly undertake. Based on one of its highly popular series, BBC’s Top Gear will now have a LEGO set of its own, a LEGO Technic Top Gear set to be exact. According to License Global, this collaborative set is expected to launch in early 2020.

Details about this new set are understandably scant as of this time, but from what we can glean from the press release, this LEGO Technic Top Gear set will definitely feature a distinctive, action-packed model that is reflective of the show’s fast-paced and stunt-filled sequences. There is no exact date given on when this set will be released, but we can somehow expect it to be officially revealed during the first quarter of 2020. Here’s BBC Studio’s complete press release for your reference.

A Look at the LEGO Technic Liebherr R 9800 (42100) and LEGO Technic Control+ App

With the release of The LEGO Technic 4×4 X-treme Off-Roader (42099) at the start of the month (currently on backorder status as of this posting), follows the release as well of its accompanying LEGO Technic Control+ app that allows a wide range of remote control access to this set via any app-compatible smartphone. Like the rest of the new Technic sets that take advantage of LEGO’s new Powered-Up technology, the 4×4 X-treme Off-Roader is a good starting point to launch the theme’s flagship set for 2019: the LEGO Technic Liebherr R 9800 (42100).

Coming in at 4,108 pieces and utilizing the latest Powered-Up accessories, this mammoth build is the largest and most advanced set ever created for the Technic line. For those who are eagerly waiting for this set, we might need to be more patient since it has been reported that the LEGO Technic Liebherr R 9800 will be released on a later date, from an initial August launching it has been apparently moved to the month of October. We had an initial look of its physical features back in April when several German LEGO fan sites published several promotional images of the set were provided by the Liebherr Group.

Now thanks to a now-expired eBay auction, we now have a couple of official images of the LEGO Technic Liebherr R 9800 (42100). It may not be that much, but it does give us an idea of how grand this set is.

The video gives us a glimpse at the enormous scale and complexity of this set, together with the many features of the Control+ app.

New LEGO Technic Land Rover Defender (42110) Revealed

We’re still several months away before we finally see on toy shelves the latest LEGO Technic sets slated for summer.  And if in case these impressive sets are not enough to fill your LEGO Technic collection, then LEGO still has a huge surprise in store for us this year.  Thanks to online toy retailer Smyths Toys, we now have a glimpse of the LEGO Technic Land Rover Defender (42110) building set.  As tipped by Brickset, this massive Technic set takes it cue from the still to be revealed, next-generation Land Rover Defender.

42110 1

Perhaps similar to its marketing approach with the Bugatti Chiron, LEGO is expanding its partnership with Land Rover to translate in LEGO form the latter’s next-gen models. However, the reveal seems to be unintended since Smyths Toys have taken down their LEGO Technic listing prior to this post.

42110 2

The LEGO Technic Land Rover Defender (42110) comes in at 2,573 pieces and measures at 42cm long and 22cm high. It is expected to retail for 159.99 USD once it arrives in LEGO Stores locally presumably in August or September. Here’s the set’s unofficial product description as lifted from Smyths’ online portal.

This collectible model of the Land Rover Defender really captures the vehicle’s level of refinement with its clean, modern lines and sculpted surfaces, making it a great display piece for the home or office. Developed in partnership with Land Rover, this building toy has working steering, 4-speed sequential gearbox, All Wheel Drive with 3 differentials, independent suspension, detailed in-line 6-cylinder engine and a working winch.

New 2019 LEGO Technic Sets Revealed

Earlier this year during the Nuremberg Toy Fair in Germany, LEGO gave attendees a glimpse of things to come with the LEGO Technic theme for summer 2019. So far, LEGO has unveiled four sets during the prestigious toy fair and same as before, only teasers and bits of info were shown to attendees. But with the release of the Dutch LEGO Catalog for the 2nd half of 2019 (which LEGO already took down from their site) which gave us a peek at the next LEGO Minecraft and LEGO Movie 2 sets, it also offers us a closer look at these new 2019 LEGO Technic sets as you can see below.

Compact Crawler Crane (42097)

LEGO Technic is also adding a new crane to its ever-growing collection of brick-built, heavy machines. The Compact Crawler Crane features several stabilizers and a working lift function quite similar to those from the Mobile Crane (8053) released in 2010.

New 2019 LEGO Technic

Car Transporter (42098)

LEGO is throwing in another huge rig with this Car Transporter set that measures almost 3 feet in length (86 cm long to be exact). To add more play feature to the set, LEGO has also added a blue speedster that looks more like a smaller version of the Bugatti Chiron (42083). This scaled down muscle car build perfectly fits this mammoth-sized transporter.

New 2019 LEGO Technic

X-treme Off-roader (42099)

It has been six years since we saw our first LEGO Technic with the Monster Truck (42005) released in 2013. Needless to say, it’s long overdue already and it’s nice to know that LEGO is now giving us a leveled-up version with the X-treme Off-roader. The set is powered and controlled using LEGO’s new Powered Up! Control+ system. You may have a better look at this set’s box images and features right here.

42099

Liebherr R 9800 (42100)

Finally, we have the largest among these new 2019 LEGO Technic sets with the Liebherr R 9800. It also seems to be by far the most complex, and largest LEGO Technic set ever released coming in at 4,108 parts. It also utilizes the new LEGO Technic Control+ system that manages its two (2) Bluetooth SMART Hubs, three (3) XL Motors, and four (4) L Motors. Check out this video demonstration of the LEGO Technic Liebherr R 9800 (42100) courtesy of Zusammengebaut.

First Look at the LEGO Technic 4X4 X-treme Off-Roader (42099)

Earlier this year, LEGO has revealed a new line of LEGO Technic sets at the Nuremberg Toy Fair in Germany. We even had a glimpse of one of the larger models in this new series with the introduction of the Liebherr 9800 (42100) and its new play and power functions. Since then, we only knew some of the set names of these new LEGO Technic sets and a possible release date of August 1. And now thanks to German toy store Wagner’s Spiel+Technikwelt GmbH, we now have our first look at LEGO Technic 4X4 X-treme Off-Roader (42099) box art, and a peek at the new LEGO Technic Control+ logo.

42099 1

42099 2

From what we can see, the 4X4 X-treme Off-Roader (42099) will require a smartphone or tablet via a Bluetooth connection and includes one (1) L motor, two (2) XL motors, and one (1) Bluetooth-controlled SMART Hub which uses six (6) standard AA batteries. It comes at 958 pieces and will sell for 229.99 Euros in Germany and the rest of Europe. Once built, this brick-built Off-Roader will measure more than a foot long, and at almost 8 inches tall.

According to the German toy store, LEGO provided them with this display set for customers to see ahead of its supposed August release date. The use of remote control devices is not something new to LEGO Technic sets. However, LEGO continuously pushes the boundary of certain innovations that integrate brick-built play with modern, mobile phone apps.

It is interesting to see how versatile these new app functions are, and how they give a new meaning to play. Now that LEGO has released copies of the LEGO Technic 4X4 X-treme Off-Roader (42099) to retailers, its just a matter of time before we get to see our first official images.

Thanks to Promobricks for the heads-up!
