Star Wars Celebration Hints at New LEGO Star Wars Video Game for 2019

By now, the heady daze that was the 2019 Star Wars Celebration has ended with lots of fun memories. Previews to upcoming shows, video games and the long-awaited “Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker” were presented and thoroughly enjoyed. But amazingly those weren’t all to be expected on the future of the galaxy far away. While we didn’t get an actual preview, a new LEGO Star Wars video game was somewhat announced during Star Wars Celebration. It was sort of mentioned in passing by sound designer Matthew Wood, Supervising Sound Editor for Skywalker Sound. As if it wasn’t obvious, the title will again be developed by WB Interactive and Traveller’s Tales.

Just to be clear, we’re still waiting for an official announcement from these game giants that will hopefully shed light on the content of this next LEGO Star Wars game. However, video game insider Eurogamer claims that this next video game instalment will be hailed as the ultimate LEGO Star Wars video game which will encompass all nine films and three trilogies comprising the Skywalker family saga.

The hugely successful Lego Star Wars series has so far adapted the space opera’s prequel trilogy, original trilogy, Clone Wars TV show and devoted an entire game to Episode 7: The Force Awakens.

Excitingly, I’ve heard this next game is more than just an adaptation of the saga’s remaining two episodes, The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker. While these episodes will be included, the project is designed to tell the story of the entire saga and I’ve heard it described as the “ultimate” Lego Star Wars game. Expect to see it announced later this year.

It will also include elements from the “Star Wars” Extended Universe. These are the official side-materials of the new Disney-Lucasfilm canon, displacing the original Expanded Universe/Legends continuity.

One notable feature previous LEGO Star Wars games would be the use of procedural generation for the in-game environment. Traveller’s Tales has already used that graphical mechanic in their 2017 sandbox title LEGO Worlds.

Aside from references to a space exploration mechanic between worlds and the uber-load of characters from the films, there’s no further info on this ultimate LEGO Star Wars video game, which would be the sixth in the WBI-TT series excluding re-masters. Perhaps the 2019 San Diego Comic Con in July will shed more light on it.

Batman: The Animated Series DLC Pack Now Available for LEGO DC Super-Villains

This year marks the 80th Anniversary of the Caped Crusader, or the Dark Knight depending on your preference. Or you can just call him Batman, sales-wise the top character of DC Comics and one of their superhero pillars. Among the many celebratory gestures by DC and Warner for Bob Kane and Bill Finger’s iconic creation, is a LEGO video game DLC. Finally made available alongside all downloadable content for WB Interactive and Traveller’s Tales’ LEGO DC Super-Villains is a level and character pack based on the seminal animated series popular in the nineties. The Batman: The Animated Series DLC Pack adds a new free-roam level depicting Gotham City as in the hit cartoon show, plus character versions of Batman and several rogues as depicted in that same show.

In addition to the Dark Knight himself, the Batman: The Animated Series DLC Pack classic renditions of villains Man-Bat (the bad guy of the series’ premiere episode), Joker, Mad Hatter, Captain Clown (Joker’s android hit-man), the Phantasm (an ex-girlfriend of Bruce Wayne’s and antagonist in the Mask of the Phantasm film), and of course, the character that debuted in the animated series and became a DC household word herself: Joker’s ax-crazy “girlfriend” Harley Quinn.

Naturally, the Batman: The Animated Series DLC Pack is only playable with the LEGO DC Super-Villains video game as a regular download (for $2.99) or via the Deluxe Edition with Season Pass. For a LEGO gamer and animated DC fan, there seems no better way to celebrate eight decades of Batman than this.

WATCH: The LEGO Movie 2 Video Game Footage Released

YouTuber and gaming guru AbdallahSmash026 shares an exclusive, LEGO Movie 2 video game footage over his channel. We’re still a few weeks to go before the tie-in video game is officially released, but WB Games was kind enough to share the first chapter of the video game, giving us a first look at how things are significantly different as compared to the first LEGO Movie video game.

Similar to the film, the LEGO Movie 2 video game begins with a retelling of the events of Taco Tuesday where the towering Duplon invaders caused havoc in the city of Bricksburg. The story is told from the usual, brooding perspective of Lucy. You start the game by playing Emmet, and later on as Lucy when you complete certain challenges, and helping other minifig citizens search for particular bricks.

Untitled 4

A new a pair of Scanner Binoculars is also introduced where players can scan any surrounding areas for building instructions to be added to their Builder Page. The binoculars are also useful in searching and revealing hidden LEGO objects.

Untitled 2

We are also introduced to the game’s Vehicle Library which is accessible via the Builder Page. While you’re in Build Mode, you can choose from the available vehicles in the database to work your way around the place faster. You can even build Ultrakatty for that extra speed boost!

Untitled 3

The first chapter of the video game goes on to introduce familiar characters such as Sweet Mayhem and Queen Watevra Wa’Nabi. Perhaps the only deviation I see from the actual LEGO Movie 2 film is that Lucy stays with Emmet even after Mayhem manages to capture almost all of our brick heroes. But generally speaking, it’s a whole new LEGO video game that you may want to try where new mechanics are introduced which are different and unique on their own.

The LEGO Movie 2 video game is now available for pre-order via Amazon US, with Amazon UK and Gamestop offering a free Star-Stuck Emmet polybag. The LEGO Movie 2 video game will be available for Playstation 4, Xbox One, and PC starting February 26, and on Nintendo Switch on March 26, 2019.

Go Beyond the Movie with The LEGO Movie 2 Video Game – New Trailer Released

Since its announcement last November, WB and TT Games have been busy in promoting The LEGO Movie 2 video game. And as we inch closer to the film’s debut in theaters, WB Games UK has released its first trailer for the tie-up video game that retells the adventure and Emmet and Lucy across the Systar System and as they fight formidable Duplo invaders.

With over 100 playable characters to unlock, the LEGO Movie 2 video game features several worlds to explore based on the film. Not much has been said regarding game play and the various levels that players can explore, but its sure to have several key elements that are distinct to other LEGO video game titles. We can expect a certain degree of co-op play using almost all characters that will appear in the film. We might as well speculate that some of these playable characters might end to be an actual minifigure later on. It will also be nice to see if these characters will somehow find their way to become the next series of TLM2 collectible minifigures. Players also get to explore the various levels and worlds that will also be shown in the film.

You may pre-order your copy of the game via Amazon US or if you wish to avail of the free LEGO Movie 2 Star-Stuck Emmet polybag, then you might want to check out with Amazon UK or EB Games in Australia.

Here’s How To Get The LEGO Movie 2 Star-Stuck Emmet (30620) Polybag

The LEGO Movie 2 has its share of polybags to go around, with some of them already spotted at Walmart and Target stores. However, there are still some of these polybags that remains to be seen out there, particularly the LEGO Movie 2 Star-Stuck Emmet (30620) polybag. Just to be clear, the Star-Stuck Emmet (30620) polybag is a promotional item included with the upcoming LEGO Movie 2 video game set to be released on February 26 in the US, and March 1 in the UK.

From the looks of it, this is the only way to have the Star-Stuck Emmet (30620) polybag especially if you intend to purchase the LEGO Movie 2 video game. You can also opt to check with eBay, but bear in mind that even as of this posting, this particular polybag is nowhere to be found in the third-party seller platform.

As of now, EB Games in Australia and Amazon UK are offering this upcoming video game title for pre-order on their respective website, with an option of selecting the title’s Limited Edition Minifigure Edition. Though Amazon US also has a similar pre-order listing, it should be noted that the website has no specific mention of the Star-Stuck Emmet (30620) polybag as a free promotional bundled together with the video game title.

Digital Videogame Store Humble Bundle Offers LEGO The Hobbit for Free

UPDATE (01/08/2019): Apparently, several news sources have been reporting that both LEGO Lord of the Rings and LEGO The Hobbit video games were now removed as well from popular PC gaming platform Steam. There’s no official word from LEGO or WB Interactive regarding this removal, but we can only speculate that this may have something to do with unresolved copyright issues.

———————————————————–

There have been so many franchises that have been licensed with LEGO to become toy sets and other media like video games, that it’s sometimes hard to keep track of them all. Some even fade into relative obscurity years after release. For instance, WB Interactive and Traveller’s Tales’ LEGO The Hobbit that came out in 2014.

For those LEGO gamers who are also fans of Tolkien’s fantasy universe – and their cinematic adaptations by Peter Jackson and New Line Cinema – there’s a unique limited-time opportunity being given by digital videogame store Humble Bundle, where they’re offering LEGO The Hobbit on Steam…absolutely free!

This free copy of LEGO The Hobbit on Humble Bundle is only available until Saturday, December 15, ending at 10 AM PST. Interested parties availing of this offer on Humble Bundle will receive a code by email, which can be redeemed on Steam until December 20, by 10 AM PST.

LEGO The Hobbit, much like other licensed LEGO games from WB Interactive and Traveller’s Tales, is a video game adaptation of the events from the first two Hobbit films, An Unexpected Journey and The Desolation of Smaug. It’s also notable for having a planned – but canceled – DLC expansion based on the then-unreleased third Hobbit movie, The Battle of the Five Armies.

A subsidiary of IGN, Humble Bundle offers some great prices for games in digital format, a portion of which is given to a number of charities partnered with the store. LOTR and Hobbit fans should take advantage of this offer.

LEGO Launches the ARKit2-Powered LEGO Playgrounds App – Now Available at the App Store

LEGO may have the dominant position in terms of customizable building toys worldwide, but it’s also bringing that experience into the virtual world, as it were. We at The Brick Show have featured quite the number of mobile apps co-developed with LEGO that featured computer-generated brick builds that could be imposed on a real background with physical LEGO sets through the “magic” of augmented reality. In fact, we covered the development of such an app between LEGO and Apple, to be rendered on their Augmented Reality Kit 2 or ARKit2 system in June. This month, the result of their work has now been released on the App Store for iOS dubbed as LEGO Playgrounds.

LEGO Playgrounds can be considered the successor of the company’s previous AR-based building app LEGO AR Studio. This one brings the latest advances in augmented-reality interaction, to the familiar system of mixing real and CGI LEGO sets.

Again, like LEGO AR Studio before, this app will be gradually loaded with CG renditions of actual LEGO sets. The first products to be converted thus in LEGO Playgrounds are two sets from LEGO Ninjago: the Dieselnaut (70654) and Dragon Pit (70655), with the promise of more to come in time. LEGO Playgrounds runs on iOS 12, and is now available for download on the App Store. Here’s the official press release from The LEGO Group.

LEGO® PLAYGROUNDS – FIRST EVER PORTAL TO DISCOVER AND PLAY WITH THE LATEST LEGO MIXED REALITY EXPERIMENTS

December 6, 2018: LEGO® Playgroundsan app-based channel delivering a variety of experimental LEGO play experiences and scenarios is now available in the App Store.

The portal is one of the latest LEGO digital innovations aiming to enhance the LEGO play experience and provide fans with a fluid and experimental interaction, which unifies the digital and physical LEGO worlds.

Tom Donaldson, Vice President of Creative Play Lab at the LEGO Group said: “Children today are mastering the art of finding new moments and forms of play and LEGO Playgrounds will provide a ‘live’ opportunity to test and learn directly with them. It’s truly a unique way to engage with them in a fun and experimental way and bring them close to our innovation process. Having this direct-link to users creates a win for everybody – sharing the latest play experiences is great fun for children and highly useful for our LEGO design and development teams who can take their feedback and use it to make launch experiences even better and more engaging.”

LEGO Playgrounds will bring selected LEGO sets and experiences to life in mixed reality experiments and other playful scenarios directly in the app store.

LEGO® NINJAGO® AR – the first to feature as a LEGO Playgrounds experiment
Using the popular LEGO NINJAGO theme, this first playground uses AR technology to detect selected physical LEGO NINJAGO Dragon
Hunters sets and bring them to life with exciting effects, animations and interactions.

The game uses the multi-user support in Apple’s ARKit technology, allowing two players to connect and play together in the same shared play space.

Users can connect and team up with a friend to battle against the Dragon Hunters, share power-ups and 3D assets, create strategies to withstand the endless waves of Dragon Hunters and even compare high-scores with friends.

LEGO Playgrounds is intended for all ages. However, the first LEGO NINJAGO AR playground is recommended for ages 9+ due to the game-play and storyline complexity.

The LEGO NINJAGO AR Playground uses two sets from the LEGO NINJAGO Dragon Hunters theme: the LEGO® NINJAGO® Dieselnaut (70654) and the LEGO® NINJAGO® Dragon’s Pit (70655).

LEGO NINJAGO AR Playground key play features:

  • Bring Physical LEGO Sets to Life with exciting AR effects, animations and games
  • Play with Friends in the same shared AR space around your set
  • Explore Physical LEGO sets and discover new interactions.
  • Place & Share Objects in AR to create unique game areas with friends.
  • Unlock Power-Ups and level-up your character.
  • Test Your Ninja Skills & Strategies to keep the enemies away and survive as long as you can. What is your high-score?

For the current LEGO Ninjago AR experience available in LEGO Playgrounds, there is an option to play 5 levels without a physical LEGO set. The app will simply look for a flat surface and allow you to play in AR only. Naturally we do encourage players to go beyond and unlock the fun around their existing physical LEGO sets.

The LEGO Playgrounds app will be free to play. There will be no in-app purchases or any ads or marketing messages.

The AR technology utilized in the app will require an iPhone 6s and above, with the latest iOS updates.

LEGO Harry Potter Collection for the Xbox One and Switch Is Now Available

These days, the cinematic focus of the Wizarding World franchise from J.K. LEGO and Harry Potter fans in the 2010s have been blessed with the series of WB Interactive and Traveller’s Tales LEGO video games about the Boy Who Lived, released on multiple video game platforms and re-released in a remastered format on today’s latest consoles.
