LEGO Ideas Project Spotlight: “SpaceX – The Ultimate Collection”

For LEGO fans who like to keep up with LEGO Ideas, we’re currently in the middle of the First 2018 Review Phase. In the meantime, no word has gone out yet of any submission on the Ideas platform gaining 10,000 supporters. But there are some set proposals that warrant supporting.

Here’s a relatively new submission done by Ideas member Matthew Nolan, with additional input from Valerie Roche. It’s a branded set, carrying the name of a private aerospace service company founded by Elon Musk that’s been in the news in recent times: SpaceX. This set is “SpaceX – The Ultimate Collection”.

As its name implies, SpaceX – The Ultimate Collection is a giant multi-model set encompassing the most prominent space vehicles created by SpaceX Corporation, in a similar vein as the venerable LEGO Ideas Saturn V rocket (21309). But this package has two SpaceX rockets, plus a multitude of other tech options.

The two rockets on this collection are from SpaceX’s Falcon series, one Falcon 9 (Block 5 variant) and the larger Falcon Heavy, all of them with rocket cores that detach and land after launch, the gimmick that helped SpaceX make sci-tech headline news. The brick details are all remarkably accurate.

Aside from the Falcons, the Ultimate Collection also has the Transporter/Erector/Launcher (TEL) system to deploy the rockets. Then there are the optional components such as the Dragon 2 capsule, a satellite, and even Elon Musk’s personal Tesla Roadster sent up to space. Sticker decals include SpaceX and optional ESA markings.

Nolan and Roche have only posted SpaceX – The Ultimate Collection on LEGO Ideas on the 10th of May, and already it’s garnered over 3,500 supporters before the month is even out. Should the trend continue, it might make it just in time to join a prospective Second 2018 Review Phase.

First Trailer for “LEGO Ninjago” Season 9 “Hunted” Now Up

You’ve got to hand it to LEGO Ninjago: its animated adaptation on Cartoon Network has got plenty of staying power. It may have made its big-screen debut last year, but the ongoing struggle between Lloyd and his Ninja team against his father Lord Garmadon is now on its ninth season.

It was plenty nice of LEGO to get the first glimpse of LEGO Ninjago: Masters of Spinjiztu Season 9 out as early as possible, much to the enjoyment of fans who were expecting news to more likely come by way of the San Diego Comic-Con for instance. Good for them.

Season 9 of the Ninjago animated series has a new subtitle: Hunted. It subtly implies the circumstances of the heroes following the shocking finale of Season 8, with most of the ninja trapped in a parallel world, leaving Lloyd and Nya as the only leading figures of resistance against Garmadon.

As the trailer above shows, Ninjago: Hunted has a split narrative, alternately switching between Lloyd and Nya being hunted by Garmadon, with the other Ninja led by Wu trying to survive in a wasteland where the inhabitants live by hunting and exploiting dragons. The subtitle takes on a double-meaning here. It’s also nice to see some of the LEGO Ninjago 2018 summer sets featured in the trailer such as the Destiny’s Wing (70650) and the Oni Titan (70658).

Yeah, the trailer’s cool and all but it doesn’t actually say when Ninjago Season 9 will start on Cartoon Network (or Nickelodeon over in Denmark). We might possibly have to wait for another tease to get a premiere date down. Maybe that’s what awaits if LEGO is present at SDCC.

Exclusive LEGO Architecture Set Sold at Billund Airport Now Updated from 4000016 to 40199

There’s no arguing at all that Billund in Denmark is LEGO’s very own corporate city-state of sorts, being the site of their HQ and all that. The first LEGOLAND Park was built here. Its own airport, now the second-largest in Denmark after Copenhagen, was built and initially operated by them.

Since 2014, the LEGO Store in Billund Airport’s departure hall offered for outgoing passengers a sweet souvenir: a LEGO Architecture set of their main building, numbered 4000016. It was a basic-build model structure with plant-pieces and rudimentary brick aircraft, but it was a rare exclusive worth picking up by collectors.

Some four years later however, there’s been a slight change. LEGO news resource Brickset has noted that the souvenir selection at Billund Airport has a new special-edition Architecture set. Or rather, it’s a new old set: Billund Airport, slightly altered and with a new number – 40199 – available only there.

40199 1

Thanks to photos from Brickset, we’ve got an idea of the amount of alterations that have been done on the LEGO Architecture Billund Airport set from version 4000016 to 40199. The sloping yellow structure on one side in the old one is gone. A “smokestack” is missing too on one end.

4000016 1

Website chatter on the new LEGO Architecture 40199 is that the flower build elements have slightly changed too, though we can’t seem to tell the difference from the photos. In conclusion, this souvenir set on Billund Airport’s departure hall LEGO Store is only cosmetically changed at best.

Dedicated collectors may go for it, and the original 4000016 will become a rarity (with jacked-up resale prices online possibly). Anybody who’s gone to Billund and are on their way back out might consider dropping by the store to have a look at the 40199 set, to see if it catches their fancy.

LEGO Brand Store (40305) Sighting on Billund Store Shelf Possibly Indicates It’s for Sale, Not Promotional

Early this May we got wind of a new LEGO set depicting a new spin on their past retail store models like the LEGO Brand Retail Store (40145). This new LEGO Brand Store (40305) is a step up from past LEGO Store building sets in that it’s a two-story structure.

Our original report on the LEGO Brand Store (40305) was that it’s going to be a little promotional item like its older brothers. However, new information implies that this might no longer be accurate. Rather than a giveaway under certain conditions, it’s going to be available on store shelves instead.

This comes to us from German LEGO news site Zusammengebaut.com, which reports that the LEGO Brand Store (40305) has been spotted on display shelves at the LEGO Store in LEGOLAND Billund, the hometown of LEGO itself. It’s priced at 229.95 Danish kroner, so it’ll be $36.15 if it comes stateside.

As seen in the photo above, the set box actually looks rather beefy in size compared to the height of the shelf (stacked vertically, even) so it sort of makes it less likely that the LEGO Brand Store (40305) is a promotional, meaning there’s probably more of it churned out.

But we’re approaching speculation at this point. Thus far we’ve concluded that the first sighting of the LEGO Brand Store (40305) is as a sales item in LEGOLAND Billund’s LEGO Store. Now we’ll have to watch for more info on how the set will be presented anyplace else in future.

LEGO Releases Official Images of the LEGO BrickHeadz Ghostbusters Peter Venkman and Slimer (41622) Dual Pack Set

A couple of weeks ago, LEGO teased via social media on its next LEGO BrickHeadz set dedicated to one of the 80’s most beloved, ghost-busting movie franchise. The LEGO BrickHeadz Ghostbusters Peter Venkman and Slimer (41622) dual pack is really happening, and LEGO has dropped several high-res images for us to enjoy.

41622 alt2

Coming in at 228 pieces, this dual-pack set is expected to retail for $19.99, and since these official images are already uploaded via LEGO’s servers, it will just be a matter of time before we get to see them on store shelves and at shop.LEGO.com, most probably in August.

These images also finally answered the nagging question of how to make Slimer ‘float’ as seen in LEGO’s initial post. Apparently, the effect is accomplished using a trans-clear 2×2 brick mounted on the usual BrickHeadz baseplate. Meanwhile, we see a slimed Dr. Peter Venkman in his classic Ghostbuster uniform, complete with his nameplate, Ghostbuster logo, and iconic Proton pack.

LEGO Wizarding World Official Box Art Images Revealed

We already saw one of the LEGO Wizarding World sets unveiled at the New York Toy Fair earlier in February, and with LEGO releasing a bunch of official images and product descriptions from this new theme, we are still missing, however, on the sets’ box art images. Thankfully, we now have an idea on how they look like thanks to the images shared by The Brick Fan and Promobricks.

Frankly, they turned out to be quite well, with its distinct dark blue and white colors which adds on the sets its magical vibe. These LEGO Wizarding World sets are slated to be released sometime in August, alongside their LEGO BrickHeadz counterparts. So I guess we still have some time to fill in those piggy banks. But for now, let’s check out their respective box art images below.

A Look at Fan-Build Interpretations of What the future LEGO Overwatch Sets Might Be Like

When word got out that LEGO and Activision Blizzard have entered into an agreement for licensing and releasing a series of toys about the latter’s hot FPS title Overwatch, it certainly triggered a lot of healthy discussion. After all, what LEGO sets can one make of a game of shooting?

A lot of LEGO builders in years past have done their own interpretations of Overwatch in LEGO. Now with an official release being put in the works, the efforts of these builders of not have caught attention of other fans that play the game, offering a tease to the future.

The first most likely candidate product line for LEGO Overwatch is in BrickHeadz, touted as LEGO’s reply to the prominence of Funko and its Pop! figures. A LEGO builder known on flickr as curtydc has created possible BrickHeadz designs for characters like Bastion and Widowmaker, as you can see below:

 35729754710 be2ef03529 z

Collectable Minifigures are another branch of LEGO that would do great for Overwatch. The game does have a large number of characters by now, divided into heroes and baddies for plenty of sprawling set-building fun. Biao Custom, also on flickr, provides us with this sample:

Lego Overwatch Minifigures

Larger character figures can be rendered in less common lines like brick builds, similar to the human figures often used on building displays at LEGOLAND’s Miniland areas. From Korea, 한성욱 gives us this:

30676759573 fb4b028837 z

Or it could be the “Constraction Figures” that was used in LEGO Star Wars. The possibilities are as endless as the imagination. It’ll be a blast waiting for when LEGO’s actual sets for Activision Blizzard’s Overwatch come out, so we can compare with these custom-made marvels by expert LEGO builders.

New LEGO Star Wars Collectible Minifigures: Kessel Mine Worker (40299) and Han Solo Mudtrooper (40300) Surfaced

This piece of news have been floating around for quite some time, but I’m a bit surprised that it has not been receiving much attention as compared to other LEGO Star Wars collectible minifigs before, such as from The Last Jedi’s DJ (40298) minifigure, and Rogue One’s Scarif Stormtrooper (40176) and R3-M2 (40268).

Thanks to a tip from Hoth Bricks, we now know what will be the next LEGO Star Wars collectible minifigs from the Han Solo spin-off. And similar to Rogue One, we have two minifigures lined up as the next promotional polybags: the LEGO Star Wars Solo Kessel Mine Worker (40299) and Han Solo Mudtrooper (40300).

lego star wars 40299 kessel mine worker

lego starwars 40300 han solo mudtrooper

The above images of these polybags were spotted over at Bricklink, with sellers located somewhere in Europe. However, what is puzzling about these polybags and those that came before them, was that they were previously Toys R Us exclusives when they were first offered as promotional freebies. Now considering TRU’s eventual demise, we’re not quite sure on how LEGO will distribute them later on. This situation echoes the same concern of the recently rumored Toys R Us 2018 Bricktober minifigures that Brian recently reported on, which includes a highly wanted collection of never-before-seen Infinity War and Harry Potter figures.

In any case, we’re still hopeful that LEGO will find a way for these collectible LEGO Star Wars minifigures to hit the market, and we may even have the Kessel Mine Worker and Han Solo in Mudtrooper uniform available in some LEGO stores, just like what happened with the LEGO Star Wars DJ (40298) minifigure. I guess for now, we just have to wait.

LEGO Star Wars Darth Vader Pod (5005376) Is Back At LEGO Shop@Home

In case you missed out on the opportunity of having the redeemed Sith Lord in a solo, minifigure form, then you’ll be glad to know that he’s back for the taking at shop.LEGO.com. After a brief stint last month, LEGO is throwing in once more the LEGO Star Wars Darth Vader Pod (5005376) as a gift-with-purchase set for a qualifying purchase of any LEGO Star Wars sets $60 and above.

5005376 alt1

The promo will run until June 6 or until supplies last, so better be sure to head over at LEGO Shop@Home to bag this freebie. While you’re at it, be sure to check out the rest of the LEGO Star Wars Han Solo sets which are out now, such as the Han Solo’s Landspeeder (75209), Moloch’s Landspeeder (75210), Imperial TIE Fighter (75211), and the Kessel Run Millennium Falcon (75212).

LEGO Jurassic World Limited Edition T. Rex Set Revealed

Belgian toy store Dreamland is now running a promo starting today until June 20, where you get a chance to bag a never-before-seen, extremely rare, LEGO Jurassic World T. Rex set for every purchase of any LEGO Jurassic World set in any of their stores. The site’s banner states that Dreamland will be giving away 100 of these exclusive sets, and that LEGO made 500 of these available worldwide. This means that other stores may carry out this promo as well.

lego jw limited edition

I really can’t figure out the set number judging from the grainy box art image that Dreamland posted, but the T. Rex mounted on a brick-built pedestal is something that I’ve never seen before in any LEGO Jurassic World set. It seems to have a new, predominantly light and dark brown printing. I like this newer version of a LEGO T. Rex, which looks more ferocious because of it’s mean-looking face print.

box lego jw limited edition

This LEGO Jurassic World Limited Edition T. Rex comes in at 70 pieces, with no identifiable set number yet (I see it numbered as 4000001, but I could be wrong). Anyways, I just hope that LEGO will follow through with its promise of giving away 400 similar sets, and we’ll wait to see where these will eventually pop-up. Otherwise, expect the price on this set to absurdly spike up on eBay and other secondary markets.

Thanks to Brickset for the heads up.
