LEGO Formally Announces Its First Plant-Based Set: the LEGO Plants for Plants (40320)

Earlier this year, LEGO has announced its commitment in helping to curb climate change by reducing their company’s environmental impact. One of the many ways they managed to do this is through the use of a special kind of plastic made out of plant-based components to be used in creating future LEGO bricks and pieces. Though not entirely biodegradable, these new LEGO pieces are made from sustainable sourced sugarcane which means that the impact to the environment caused by producing these bricks will be significantly lower as compared to their usual methods of creating ABS plastic. The LEGO Group is committed in moving towards this direction, and  as scheduled, has now rolled out its very first plant-based product which is aptly named, LEGO Plants for Plants (40320).

LEGO Plants for Plants

Beginning in August, LEGO fans can now have their first set of environment-friendly LEGO pieces in the form of the LEGO Plants for Plants (40320). As mentioned in the LEGO Store August Calendar, this set of LEGO botanical pieces consisting of grass, shrubs, and leaves will be available as a gift with purchase set for every single receipt purchase of any LEGO products worth $35 and above. The set contains 29 plant pieces made of bright lime green and classic green colors.

40320

This very first plant-based set marks LEGO’s first steps of making all of its core products (which means all LEGO plastic pieces) and packaging made out of sustainable materials by year 2030. Here’s a press release from LEGO regarding the LEGO Plants for Plants (40320) set, followed by a cool video that highlights LEGO’s mission and commitment of making sustainable plastic bricks.

The new plant-based LEGO elements will begin appearing in LEGO boxes throughout 2018. The new plant-based elements are drawn from the botanical range of LEGO elements – including trees, leaves and bushes- and are made from a plastic produced using sustainably sourced sugarcane, plants from plants!

Some of the botanical LEGO elements are available for the first time in brilliant lime green colour, as well as the classic LEGO green. The elements are compatible with the first ever LEGO bricks made 60 years ago and are an example of the LEGO Group’s continued commitment to innovation while staying true to the quality, play experience and durability that is at the heart of the LEGO system.

The plastic used to make the elements is polyethylene, a soft, durable and flexible plastic made from sustainably sourced sugarcane, in accordance with guidance from the Bioplastic Feedstock Alliance (BFA) and third party certified global standards. The new elements are technically identical to existing LEGO botanical elements and have been tested to ensure the sustainably sourced plant-based plastic meets the high standards for quality and safety that the LEGO Group has, and consumers expect from LEGO products.

The new plant-based LEGO elements will begin appearing in LEGO boxes throughout 2018.

We surely support LEGO on this responsible move, and we are thankful to have toy companies who are mindful of their role towards a healthier and greener environment.

LEGO Introduces First Plants from Plants Set (40320) Made of Sustainable Materials

Do you still remember back in March, when LEGO announced its plan to commence transitioning the materials used in their products to more sustainable sources? They had quite the sense of appropriateness with having the first LEGO building elements made of plant-based plastics to be… the plant props and set accessories. While the earlier announced LEGO xtra accessory polybags might possibly have some sustainable materials in them, particularly with Food (40309) and Botanical (40310), the company actually has a special box set coming that really sells their green-based building elements campaign. Next month they’re introducing the LEGO Plants from Plants set (40320).

40320

The first images of this set was glimpsed on the August 2018 LEGO Store Calendar. As its box images show, it’s nothing but LEGO trees, grass, shrubbery and other green elements, all made out of plant-based plastics. This is something of a glimpse towards what LEGO plans for the future.

For those interested in making their LEGO building or outdoor layouts and vignettes livelier with vegetation, they can avail of the promotional Plants from Plants (40320) set at both LEGO Stores and shop.LEGO.com from August 1 to 14. Stateside, they only need a minimum $35 LEGO purchase to get 40320 free.

LEGO’s sources for plant-based plastics are from sugarcane, and are more sustainable than the artificial sources of conventional plastic. The LEGO Group’s Vice President for Environmental Responsibility Tim Brooks promises that once the use of sustainable materials for these special sets take off, eventually all future LEGO bricks will be using plant-based plastics. We’re looking forward to that directive fulfilled.

LEGO Unikitty Gets Another Polybag – the Unikitty Castle Room (5005239)

It looks like the LEGO Store Calendar for the month of August 2018 has been sent out early, and eventually, new polybag has been revealed – the LEGO Unikitty Castle Room (5005239). This is the second polybag offering that LEGO has announced following the reveal of the Unikitty Roller Coaster Wagon (30406) which will launch on August 1 together with the rest of the LEGO Unikitty sets featuring the ever so positive local resident of Cloud Cuckoo Land.

lego unikitty castle room 5005239

A closer look at the polybag’s image (courtesy of Brickfinder) reveals that the polybag contains a cardboard cutout that features a cross-section of Unikitty’s castle crib. It contains several pieces of brightly colored LEGO pieces to create her couch and aquarium, along with the usual brick-built figure of Unikitty with a unique face print. It also includes a sticker sheet to add more fun and color to the cardboard cutout.

As mentioned in the August LEGO Store Caledar, the LEGO Unikitty Castle Room (5005239) comes as a free promotional for every $25 worth of LEGO Unikitty sets. Though opinions are mixed with regards to the reception of the LEGO Unikitty sets, a lot of younger LEGO fans find these as a must-have to their LEGO collection. Including this polybag as a promotional with a relatively low price point surely adds to the appeal of these upcoming sets.

LEGO Harry Potter Harry’s Journey to Hogwarts (30407) Polybag Promotional Revealed

British LEGO fan site Brick Fanatics was present during the UK launch of the LEGO Wizarding World Harry Potter sets earlier today, to have a firsthand look at what these exciting sets have to offer. Other than the awesome sets on display, one piece of surprise that LEGO also revealed during the launch event is a new polybag which is reported to be an upcoming promotional tie-in with the Wizarding World sets. The LEGO Harry Potter Harry’s Journey to Hogwarts (30407) polybag is a little set that shows Harry as he begins his wizarding adventures aboard Platform 9 ¾ as seen in the first film of the franchise, The Sorcerer’s Stone.

LEGO Harry Potter 30407 Harrys Journey to Hogwarts 3

This polybag features Harry in his Hogwarts uniform (though I feel this is not entirely accurate if you will consider the timeline of the events in the film – he is not yet wearing his uniform in that particular scene), some of his luggage and including his trusted owl, Hedwig. This is a great and cheap way to have Harry and Hedwig’s minifigures either on their own, or as an additional set to add to the Hogwarts Express (75955) set.

There’s no exact date on when this promotional LEGO Harry Potter Harry’s Journey to Hogwarts (30407) polybag will be offered, but it safe to guess that it will also launch sometime in July once the LEGO Wizarding World Harry Potter sets go live.

Thanks to Brick Fanatics once again for sharing this image.

LEGO Creative Storybook (40291) Promo Ending this Week

LEGO has got so many promos happening at their online and branded shops, giveaways with durations that go across months, blending from one promo to the next. For instance, right now the LEGO Creative Storybook set (40291) is the current offer running since May. But its time is running out.

We first got news about the Creative Storybook (40291) thanks to a printed promo flyer from LEGO Germany, where it was slated to become available for local LEGO shoppers with a minimum total purchase of €65 from June 4 to 24. Its counterpart US promo pegs the required minimum purchase at $99, and actually ends up a few days shorter.

Just a heads up, the LEGO Creative Storybook set (40291) promo will end this Wednesday, on June 20 after starting this month on the fourth. Said set is a diorama honoring famed Danish fairy tale author Hans Christian Andersen, shaped in the form of an open book with “pop-up” scenery.

40291

One factor that gave positive reactions to the Creative Storybook (40291) with LEGO builders was its coincidental resemblance to the next LEGO Ideas set to watch out for: the “Pop-Up Book” by JKBrickworks. This approved LEGO Ideas project was somewhat similar to the LEGO Creative Storybook, but larger and with a true “pop-up” function enabling it to be closed and opened, with building scenery standing up on point.

June 2018 may be over halfway done, but there are still many more LEGO promos and giveaways in store. Check back to our coverage of their LEGO Store calendar here.

LEGO Store July 2018 Calendar Now Up – Teases on Two Exciting VIP Exclusives

LEGO has rolled out its store calendar for July and it looks like we’re about to have an awesome summer ahead. Other than the usual freebies and gift-with-purchase items for this month, LEGO is also getting ready for other big events lined up for July such as the annual San Diego Comic Con. And rumor has it that next month’s VIP exclusives will saw the arrival of one of the most carefully guarded sets that AFOLs are so eagerly waiting for in a very a long time (myself included). Let’s take a quick look of what the LEGO Store July 2018 Calendar has to offer. You can also find a PDF version of this right here.

June 30 to July 8 – Free exclusive LEGO Beach Tote bag with a purchase of $199 or more. I can’t say that I’m thrilled with this freebie, at such a high price point as a gift-with-purchase item. $200 is too much to get a bag such as this, but nevertheless, I guess it doesn’t matter if you’re eyeing on larger sets such as the LEGO Technic Bugatti Chiron (42083) or the LEGO Creator Expert Roller Coaster (10261).

01 7981 JUL18 CAL medres Page 1

July 9 to 15 – Free Party Banana Minifigure with a purchase of $35 or more. This one is a more decent offer, with a reasonable price point attached to it. Similar to previous GWPs such as this year’s Easter Bunny Hut (5005249) and 2017’s Iconic Cave (5004936), the Party Banana (5005250) is a mascot-themed minifig that comes in a clamshell box, a boom box accessory and an all new banana guy printing.

July 1 to 31 – LEGO VIPs earn Double Points on certain LEGO Creator sets. These sets are the most recent Sunshine Surfer Van (31079) and the Modular Winter Vacation (31080), both offered at $34.99. Promoting these sets fits practically well with LEGO’s theme for the month of July.

July 10 to 11 – VIP Monthly Mini Build is a BBQ stand. LEGO VIP members should register at shop.LEGO.com/Minibuild-registration beginning June 15 to qualify for this monthly mini build.

July 18 to 31 and July 23 to 31 – VIPs get Early Access to a new exclusive LEGO set during these dates, respectively. Rumors are rife among LEGO fan forums that we are about to see the release of the much-awaited, and long overdue LEGO Ideas Voltron (21311) set. Speculations point out to the possibility that LEGO might take the opportunity at San Diego Comic Con to reveal the towering, and impressively designed LEGO Ideas Voltron set. A recent news outlet from Korea also points out that set 21311 will be available worldwide on August 1. This is truly an exciting month.

July 26 – Dream It, Build It, Keep It. – Come to any LEGO Brand Store during this date to receive one of four different mystery boxes of elements. Based on the rather grainy image of the box art, it looks like that this will be a kind of promotional gift for participating on this in-store event. Bear in mind that this is intended for children ages 5 to 14 and pre-registration is required starting July 1.

LEGO Brand Store (40305) Sighting on Billund Store Shelf Possibly Indicates It’s for Sale, Not Promotional

Early this May we got wind of a new LEGO set depicting a new spin on their past retail store models like the LEGO Brand Retail Store (40145). This new LEGO Brand Store (40305) is a step up from past LEGO Store building sets in that it’s a two-story structure.

Our original report on the LEGO Brand Store (40305) was that it’s going to be a little promotional item like its older brothers. However, new information implies that this might no longer be accurate. Rather than a giveaway under certain conditions, it’s going to be available on store shelves instead.

This comes to us from German LEGO news site Zusammengebaut.com, which reports that the LEGO Brand Store (40305) has been spotted on display shelves at the LEGO Store in LEGOLAND Billund, the hometown of LEGO itself. It’s priced at 229.95 Danish kroner, so it’ll be $36.15 if it comes stateside.

lego store 40305 boxen legoland billund 2018 zusammengebaut andres lehmann 945x630

As seen in the photo above, the set box actually looks rather beefy in size compared to the height of the shelf (stacked vertically, even) so it sort of makes it less likely that the LEGO Brand Store (40305) is a promotional, meaning there’s probably more of it churned out.

But we’re approaching speculation at this point. Thus far we’ve concluded that the first sighting of the LEGO Brand Store (40305) is as a sales item in LEGOLAND Billund’s LEGO Store. Now we’ll have to watch for more info on how the set will be presented anyplace else in future.

New LEGO Star Wars Collectible Minifigures: Kessel Mine Worker (40299) and Han Solo Mudtrooper (40300) Surfaced

This piece of news have been floating around for quite some time, but I’m a bit surprised that it has not been receiving much attention as compared to other LEGO Star Wars collectible minifigs before, such as from The Last Jedi’s DJ (40298) minifigure, and Rogue One’s Scarif Stormtrooper (40176) and R3-M2 (40268).

Thanks to a tip from Hoth Bricks, we now know what will be the next LEGO Star Wars collectible minifigs from the Han Solo spin-off. And similar to Rogue One, we have two minifigures lined up as the next promotional polybags: the LEGO Star Wars Solo Kessel Mine Worker (40299) and Han Solo Mudtrooper (40300).

lego star wars 40299 kessel mine worker

lego starwars 40300 han solo mudtrooper

The above images of these polybags were spotted over at Bricklink, with sellers located somewhere in Europe. However, what is puzzling about these polybags and those that came before them, was that they were previously Toys R Us exclusives when they were first offered as promotional freebies. Now considering TRU’s eventual demise, we’re not quite sure on how LEGO will distribute them later on. This situation echoes the same concern of the recently rumored Toys R Us 2018 Bricktober minifigures that Brian recently reported on, which includes a highly wanted collection of never-before-seen Infinity War and Harry Potter figures.

In any case, we’re still hopeful that LEGO will find a way for these collectible LEGO Star Wars minifigures to hit the market, and we may even have the Kessel Mine Worker and Han Solo in Mudtrooper uniform available in some LEGO stores, just like what happened with the LEGO Star Wars DJ (40298) minifigure. I guess for now, we just have to wait.

LEGO Star Wars Darth Vader Pod (5005376) Is Back At LEGO Shop@Home

In case you missed out on the opportunity of having the redeemed Sith Lord in a solo, minifigure form, then you’ll be glad to know that he’s back for the taking at shop.LEGO.com. After a brief stint last month, LEGO is throwing in once more the LEGO Star Wars Darth Vader Pod (5005376) as a gift-with-purchase set for a qualifying purchase of any LEGO Star Wars sets $60 and above.

5005376 alt1

The promo will run until June 6 or until supplies last, so better be sure to head over at LEGO Shop@Home to bag this freebie. While you’re at it, be sure to check out the rest of the LEGO Star Wars Han Solo sets which are out now, such as the Han Solo’s Landspeeder (75209), Moloch’s Landspeeder (75210), Imperial TIE Fighter (75211), and the Kessel Run Millennium Falcon (75212).
