Though there are no exclusive parts included in these sets save for the 2×3 special anniversary printed tile that goes with the Dark Knight of Gotham City (77903), the rest are relatively common. There are also a couple of first-for-2019 parts that are still exceptionally rare like the Black 1X2 Roof Tile used in the Sith Trooper Bust, and the Medium Stone Gray 2×2 Inverted Plate with Snap for the Captain Marvel and the Asis, both of which are found only in 4 to 5 sets. With some improvision, these parts can be somehow replaced if you’re not the completionist type.

Though the chance of the LEGO Asia-exclusive sets Chinese New Year’s Eve Dinner (80101) and Dragon Dance (80102) arriving in US LEGO Stores is close to none, LEGO was kind enough to give us the opportunity to build our own. The LEGO Customer Service portal was updated once again, and the building instructions for these regional exclusive sets are now uploaded for everyone to use. These Asia-exclusive sets are understandably gaining a following among the LEGO community, considering their thoughtful design and attention to detail. The cultural references to the festivities involving the celebration of the Chinese New Year are quite spot on.
These sets are considerably large in themselves. For example, the Chinese New Year’s Eve Dinner (80101) consists of a total of five bags with 615 parts in total. For most LEGO builders, the selling point for this set is its interesting range for colorful printed tiles, especially those found on the dinner table. Of particular interest is the printed 1×2 tile that shows a pair of chopsticks and a spoon. It also has its share of its stickers, particularly those found inside the build representing family photos. The second set, Dragon Dance (80102) offers a wider range of play features similar to what was introduced in LEGO Forma sets. It comes in 622 parts placed in four bags. Since 2019 marks the Year of the Pig in the Chinese zodiac calendar, it’s quite clever of LEGO to throw in the Piggy Guy Collectible minifigure from 2014’s LEGO CMF Series 12. Additionally, the collection of festive minifigs dressed in brightly red, dragon-inspired clothes make the Dragon Dance (80102) a must have for collectors. Another of these LEGO Asia-exclusive sets is also slated to be released in the first quarter of the year in the form of the still-to-be-revealed LEGO Dragon Boat Race (80103), loaded with a huge amount of minifigs – 15 in all. Watermarked preliminary images of this set can be found on eBay if you want to take a look. Both the Chinese New Year’s Eve Dinner (80101) and Dragon Dance (80102) sets are currently available in LEGO certified stores in Malaysia and other parts of the Asia-Pacific region. It is also currently offered at shop.LEGO.com’s Korean portal. If you’re located outside of Asia, then your choices are quite limited if you wish to add this set to your collection. You may try to check with third-party resellers such as those found on eBayif you wish to get these sets.
LEGO Minecraft is here to stay this 2019! And other than the introduction of new, larger buildable figures of Steve, Alex, and a Minecraft Skeleton, LEGO now introduces its very first LEGO Minecraft polybag with the Steve and Creeper (30393) polybag set. This particular polybag adds to the roster of other sets due to be released this year – particularly those coming from the LEGO City, LEGO Movie 2, and LEGO Marvel themes – whose building instructions were found online by Brickset.
This is a very welcomed gesture from LEGO since the Minecraft theme has been sorely lacking from polybags since its introduction 6 years ago. The LEGO Minecraft Steve and Creeper (30393) polybag features the typical Steve with a sword accessory, and a Creeper minifig, including a buildable TNT box. This simple build also comes with a play feature that allows builders to ‘launch’ the TNT by pushing a lever connected to a Technic pin. Like any other polybag set, this is also a great opportunity to have these two LEGO Minecraft minifigures added to your collection without breaking the bank. Details are scant though as of this posting, regarding the availability of the LEGO Minecraft Steve and Creeper (30393) polybag, and my guess is that it may be a part of an upcoming promotional at LEGO stores and LEGO Shop@HOme. It looks like the wave of new 2019 polybags is not yet over. Hot off the heels of the new LEGO City and LEGO Movie 2 polybags, comes another mini build straight from the Spiderverse. The building instructions for the LEGO Marvel Superheroes Spider-Man’s Mini Spider Crawler (30451) can now be found online via LEGO’s Customer Service webpage. As you may have noticed, it is a smaller replica of the larger Spider-Man’s Spider Crawler (76114) set. This Mini Spider Crawler (30451) polybag also comes as our first polybag in 2019 under the new Spider-Man subtheme.
Coming in at more than 70 pieces, this new for 2019 LEGO Marvel Superheroes polybag features the newly designed Spider-Man minifigure (a cost-effective way to catch Spidey’s new minifig, by the way), with a much smaller arachnid build. 3 or 4 smaller builds of this Mini Spider Crawler (30451) goes perfectly well with its larger counterpart if you wish to create a brood of fearsome spider mech. There seem to be no special parts included in this polybag, save for Spidey’s minifig. If you recall from last July, the LEGO Store in Taiwan offered a promotional gift to celebrate the brick’s 60th year anniversary. The limited edition LEGO 60th Anniversary Commemorative Pen Holder is a nice brick-built table or desktop accessory that you can flaunt to show your love for the iconic LEGO brick. Designed by Hongkong’s only LEGO Certified Professional Andy Hung, this set was given away for free at the LEGO Store in Taiwan together with a qualifying purchase.
If you are impressed about this set as much as I do, and you are not fortunate enough to be located at this side of the globe, then you might be glad to know that you now have a chance to make your very own commemorative pen holder to deck any AFOL’s workspace. Master Builders Tyler and Sean are back with another series of LEGO MOCs inspired by the recent release of Star Wars The Last Jedi. These LEGO Star Wars character busts are based on a stylized, cartoony version of Luke Skywalker (based on old man Luke from TLJ), Yoda, Darth Maul, and a First Order Stormtrooper. I simply couldn’t overemphasize the degree of complexity and advanced building techniques that went through the creation of these character busts. As Tyler noted, these custom LEGO Star Wars Character Busts may look simple on the outside, but the building magic really happens on the inside.
Particularly, I like the way how Luke’s gray hair was conveyed using light and dark gray slope pieces. The way Yoda’s eyes were recreated and the angle of his eyebrows gives this Jedi Master character bust a certain degree of personality. Additionally, the use of lime green color for Yoda was really spot on.
Darth Maul is really in a class of his own. As my favorite Sith Lord from the Star Wars prequels, I certainly won’t mind giving him some space in my LEGO Star Wars collection. The red and black color scheme really fits his character, not to mention Tyler and Sean’s excellent use of those white tooth pieces to replicate his iconic horns. This is one Sith character bust that you definitely don’t want to mess with.
Finally, we have what I feel is the epitome of Tyler and Sean’s brick-building skills. This LEGO Star Wars MOC First Order Stormtrooper bust clearly showcases the depth of their building skills. The helmet design, and the way the LEGO pieces are aligned in such a way to give the bust a smooth, and sleek appearance is really awesome. Admittedly, this is the toughest model that Sean and Tyler ever made in this series.

If there is one particular scene in the Lord of the Ringstrilogy that really sends shivers down my spine is that scene in The Return of the Kingwhere the noble Army of Rohan was overwhelmed at the sight of several gigantic beasts looming on the horizon (similar to how the Resistance may have probably felt when faced with a line of formidable First Order Heavy Assault Walkers as we saw from The Last Jedi trailer). Perhaps other than the TLOR classic fight scene between the hellish Balrog and Gandalf (which Tyler impressively re-enacted in brick form with his LEGO LOTR Custom Balrog Battle set), the war elephants used in the Battle of Pelennor Fields is one LOTR scene that I really wish LEGO has included in this theme. Thankfully, Brickshow’s master builder Tyler knows how much we love Lord of the Rings, and has a good grasp of LOTR lore as well. For his third LOTR-themed MOC, we now present to you, the mighty and proud custom LEGO Lord of the Rings Oliphant!
Fighting the Oliphant in battle as seen in The Return of the King, proved to be quite a Herculian task for our heroes. The mere sight of the massive war animal is enough to make even the bravest warrior cast doubt if such a creature can be taken down. This overwhelming feeling of sheer size and raw strength was perfectly captured by Tyler in this custom built LEGO Oliphant. Now honestly, we wished LEGO could have made one, but it was a bummer that LEGO didn’t make that call in adding the Oliphant in the TLOR line-up. So for now, let’s see all the nice features that Tyler included in his latest LEGO TLOR wishlist.
First off, this custom LEGO Lord of the Rings Oliphant has excellent articulation in all of its four massive legs starting with its knees using Technic joint pieces. Tyler also used sturdy ball joints for the ankles which can flex and be posed in various directions. The hips of the Oliphant are also articulated which allows the legs to be rotated at various angles, allowing the behemoth to be posed in different positions.
The Oliphant’s head is attached to its body using a strong ball joint that also acts as a support to counter the weight of the head. It also allows the head to be moved from left to right, creating a swaying motion as seen in the film. This swaying motion of the Oliphant’s head, coupled with its menacing 2 pairs of tusks, is perhaps the most devastating feature of the Oliphant in the battlefield. The trunk and primary tusks are also articulated using a variety of Mixel joints, allowing it a more flexible and fluid motion, while the jaw can also be opened and closed using a hinge.
This LEGO Oliphant also comes with a variety of battle accessories as we see in the film, including a chain connected to its tusks to use in sweeping the battlefield, and the menacing, three-tiered Haradrim tower mounted on its back. The tower also comes equipped with several spear launchers to add an extra punch to the Oliphant’s lethal capabilities.
One of the best parts in this scene is when Legolas single-handedly defeated an Oliphant using a combination of acrobatic moves and top-notch archery skills. This particular scene has been nicely re-enacted by Tyler by adding a simple carrottop piece on the sides of the Oliphant’s legs, allowing Legolas’ minifig counterpart to grab hold of it and maneuver his way up to the tower. As seen from the film, these are actually arrows that got stuck to the beast’s extraordinarily thick skin. It is so embedded in the Oliphant’s skin that the arrow itself can support the weight of Legolas.
Overall, this is such an excellent MOC that LEGO designers may find worth considering. Both AFOLs and KFOLs will certainly appreciate its play features and aesthetic value. Frankly, there is still a lot of potential in the LEGO Lord of the Rings theme that I sincerely wish LEGO will give it a second look and perhaps create more sets than just the 16 builds that they previously came up with. Since Tyler launched his very first LEGO LOTR Prancing Pony custom set, LEGO Lord of the Ring fans have been clamoring for more similar custom LEGO LOTR wishlist sets from our master builder. This time, another iconic scene from The Fellowship of the Ring is now captured in LEGO bricks – the cliffhanging, edge-of-your-seat, tear-jerking Bridge of Khazad Dum scene, complete, with a brick-built version of the monstrous Balrog, as well as minifigures of Gandalf and Frodo Baggins, and of course the Bridge of Khazad Dum itself. This and much more are perfectly captured in this custom LEGO Lord of the Rings Balrog build.
First off (and quite obviously, the one that we want to dive in first since this is our favorite part) we have the brick-built model of the Balrog. Among the 12 sets that LEGO officially made under the Lord of the Rings theme, I certainly hope that this is the 13th one. As of to date, we only have Balrog in his digital form in LEGO Lord of the Rings video gamewhich was released in back 2012, so it’s kind of sad that we never got to see him as an official LEGO set. But thanks to Tyler, we can have this legendary monster built, and hopefully (fingers crossed), LEGO will take notice.
Tyler’s custom LEGO LOTR Balrog may not be at minifigure scale as seen in the video game, but given that it comes as a part of the overall Bridge of Khazad Dum custom set, it is scaled in such a way similar to how LEGO may actually design it. It is also neatly articulated using a lot of ball joints for the legs and arms. The Balrog’s wings are even mounted on ball joints as well, so it can be posed upward or downward including the skeletal parts of its wings for a more accurate and menacing look.
The headpiece of Tyler’s Balrog MOC is also an impressive build on its own. From its mean-looking horns to Tyler’s use of trans-orange pieces for the rest of its head and torso, this build captures the hellish character of this unholy beast from Moria.
But perhaps the best reason that Tyler has for this choice of pieces, which also happens to be one of the set’s best play feature, in my opinion, is his inclusion of a light brick inside the Balrog. The light brick is activated with a touch of a button that Tyler cleverly added at the back of the Balrog’s head. I can’t just put into words how nice this play feature is, especially when you turn off the light brick inside a room – the Balrog’s fiery demeanor simply stands out.
Of course last but not the least, we have the actual Bridge of Khazad Dum from the LOTR – The Fellowship of the Ring, which is also scaled down so as to look like an actual LEGO set. If you remember this scene in the film, the bridge begins with a relatively small entrance (as far as the size of the Balrog is concerned), that narrows down to a very slim and restricted pathway. On the bridge, you have Gandalf in his classic ‘you shall not pass!’ pose, while at the other end of the bridge is Frodo holding the One Ring in his minifig hand.
The bridge also comes with neat play features and movable parts, one of which being is the ‘collapsible’ archway which the Balrog knocks down as charges his way towards Gandalf, while the latter shouts his ever-famous battle cry.
Now if you still remember this part of the film, the highlight of this scene is when the Balrog advances to attack and Gandalf causes the middle portion of the bridge to collapse taking the Balrog with it. Tyler once again impressively added a play feature where this middle portion of the bridge collapses by a push of a button at the other end, sending the Balrog hurling downwards the abyss. Then we have Gandalf (when things seem to be a walk in the park) falling and barely catching on at the edge of the bridge where he hangs on and eventually falls into the chasm together with the Balrog.
This is one custom LEGO LOTR set that is simply packed with cool, and accurate play features as closely as you can see in the film. Here’s Tyler with his own thoughts on this latest addition to our LEGO LOTR wishlist.
