Jiwoo’s “The Library” gains 10-K Support on LEGO Ideas

Many submissions to LEGO Ideas vying for official-set status tend to fall into already-existing main LEGO themes. We’ve certainly featured a multitude of contemporary building sets that would look right at home in LEGO City neighborhoods. The previous Review Stage gave us a music store and train station among several 10-K-supported sets fitting the City mold. Heck, LEGO City may be one of the easiest go-to themes for conceptualizing a product idea. Take for instance this submission by Ideas member Jiwoo, depicting a library building. But it’s not just any public library; it’s “The Library.”

Jiwoo pretty much mentions LEGO City as being where his submission easily fits in. The Library is a brick-built triumph of LEGO architecture, blending historical structural design with a bold present-day twist. The building is 3/4ths old-timer building with a large book-shaped edifice on one side. This fourth of the structure houses the stair access to the library’s two stories and roof deck.

The first floor is a cozy reading room dominated by tall floor-to-ceiling windows.

Floor two houses the book collection and an electronic database for quick reference. If a minifig patron prefers to read in the open air, they can use the table and chairs at the rooftop.

The Library exterior goes out of the way to make the establishment very welcoming. At the corner stand a classic lamppost and sign.

There’s even a pencil-shaped bench on one side to indicate that yes, this is a library building.

As for the book stairwell, three panels allow builders to peek into the interior for easy play access.

About the only downside we can see in this great submission is the fact that it includes only one “manager” minifigure. Regardless, Jiwoo’s “The Library” earned its 10-K support, so good luck.

Tales of the Space Age LEGO Art Build Gains Entry to Ideas First 2022 Review

The latest Review Stage on LEGO Ideas is filling in rather nicely. The variety of product ideas that got 10,000 supporters in this period already check most general LEGO set types. Structural builds, from modern to old-western to medieval; and vehicles real or fantastic. We even have a buildable animal, a brick-built working clock replica, and…a toilet. All of these are free-standing builds. But there’s one niche LEGO theme that now has representation in the First 2022 Stage: LEGO Art. We can thank Ideas member john_carter for giving us this nifty and artistic set in the form of the LEGO product idea, Tales of the Space Age.

Here we have “Tales of the Space Age,” no less than three LEGO Art pieces created by john_carter. Each portrait-oriented artwork depicts three space-age events in raised relief via LEGO pieces. A rocket launches towards the stars. A lander probe traverses the surface of Mars. Finally, radar telescopes monitor the movement of comets and meteors. They can be displayed individually or side by side. Even their means of display can be varied. Let them stand like plaques on surfaces, or hang on the wall using hook slots made from Technic lift arms. At 10.4cm x 14.7 cm, the works are big enough for prominent visibility.

It’s good that a LEGO Art-esque build has joined the entries for Ideas review this early part of 2022. Whether it’s good and unique enough to convince the expert reviewers is another matter. But we’ve been surprised at chosen official LEGO Ideas sets before. Maybe “Tales of the Space Age” will surprise us later on.

Ideas Contest “Galaxy of Celebrations” Crowd Vote Begins

The 2021 Yuletide season saw the duration of one of the longest LEGO Ideas contests in recent memory. It was “A Galaxy of Celebrations,” where contestants must make a brick-film of LEGO Star Wars characters celebrating Earth holidays. The Ideas crew awaited entries from interested members from mid-November to mid-January this year. We could understand why the contest eventually attracted plenty of brick-film entries. After all, who wants to pass up a chance to win the awesome UCS AT-AT (75313)? Anyway, it’s been two weeks since the idea intake phase for “Galaxy of Celebrations” ended. Now, the fans will vote.

Starting this past Friday, January 27, the Crowd Vote for LEGO Ideas’ “A Galaxy of Celebrations” contest has begun. The Ideas review crew already helped by pruning the 195 initial brick-film entries to 20, further divided into four categories. Our featured Earth occasions celebrated by the LEGO Star Wars cast are: Father’s Day, May the 4^th, summer and the Holidays. Fans on LEGO Ideas can vote for their favorites on each category until February 3. The category winners will win an initial batch of prizes and undergo a second fan vote later. The ultimate winner gets that sweet UCS AT-AT.

You can check out the “semifinalist” brick-film entries on LEGO Ideas’ blog post concerning the “Galaxy of Celebrations” fan vote. Voting will be done on the official contest page here. The second crowd vote will be on February 13 after a three-day second Expert Review period of the category winners. And after nearly four months, we’ll know the final results of this contest February 24.

Functioning Kit-Cat Klock Wins 10-K Support on LEGO Ideas

In 1932, the Oregon Allied Manufacturing Company produced a wall clock that became a symbol of art deco home furnishings. It was a novelty redesign of the classic pendulum clock. Make the clock look like a cat with the pendulum as its tail. Then, rig a mechanism so that the cat’s “eyes” move in sync with the “tail.” This clock remained in production even as the manufacturer since moved to California. But only in 1982 did the clock face display its trademark name: Kit-Cat Klock. Nothing like a novelty clock to be converted to a 10K-supported LEGO Ideas product idea.

10K Club Member Mukkinn presents to us his Kit-Cat Klock LEGO-brick build for Ideas Review. The timing can’t be more auspicious considering 2022 marks the retro appliance’s 90^th anniversary. Sure, LEGO has more than enough mechanical elements to replicate a wagging tail-pendulum and swinging eyes. But where’s the fun in that? Why not use LEGO pieces to build a fully-functioning clock that tells time, in addition to the cat motions? Mukkinn uses 15 gears powered by motor to drive the hands on the face plus the eyes and pendulum. Add the stylish black-cat clock casing (with trademark) and the parts total runs up to 1,300.

If you were waiting for a truly mind-blowing new 10-K supported set on LEGO Ideas First 2022, here it is. Kit-Cat Klock makes the first motorized entry for this batch of submissions aspiring for official set-hood. Future entries to the First 2022 Review Stage will really need to kick things up a notch with builds like these finally making appearances.

Ideas 10K: Steampunk Airship Joins First 2022 Review

This past weekend saw a blitz of product ideas on LEGO Ideas getting the needed 10,000 supporters for review. Much like past weeks, we’ll feature these additions to the First 2022 Review Stage once per day. Anyhow, our next 10-K submission is the second vehicle set-build for this batch, and a fantasy-themed ride too. Anyone who has played early “Final Fantasy” videogames would recognize this. Given that the creator is a 10K Club Member, we can expect wicked details here. In fact, this product idea could start a theme with a Third 2021 Stage passer. Both of them are Steampunk.

Courtesy of 10K achiever BrickHammer, Steampunk Airship looks to impress LEGO Ideas reviewers after gaining support. BrickHammer freely admits to being inspired by fantasy airship designs to make this set. He also made the call to theme this airship as a research vessel, rather than the familiar/popular pirate ship.

The ship is carried in the air by a zeppelin-shaped balloon, propelled forward by steam vents astern. For protection against air pirates, the airship packs two cannons, deployable at either port or starboard. Bubble windows provide views to crew inside the decks be they at quarters, Captain’s room or engine section.

To man the Steampunk Airship, BrickHammer provides four minifigures: captain, first mate/navigator, engineer and gunner. They’ll get a lot to do with the vessel with how busy and prop-filled it is.

All in all, we’re looking at a good candidate for passing the LEGO Ideas First 2022 Review Stage. If it does, along with Steampunk Explorers from Third 2021, could we be looking at a LEGO Steampunk line? Now that’s a nice possibility to ponder.

John Harvey’s London Underground Gets 10-K Support on LEGO Ideas

One urge probably felt by many LEGO builders is the desire to add plenty of cool stuff to their creations. Maybe they want more complex details like props. Perhaps they think they can fit in one more feature or room with furnishings. This new product idea with 10-K support from LEGO Ideas member John Harvey apparently fits the bill. It can be considered a “regional” City set, seeing as it’s based on London, UK. One notable characteristic of this build is that it comprises three stories. Two of them are above street level and the other is, quite appropriately, Underground.

John Harvey pulled out all the stops, as it were, for “Mini City Diorama: London with Underground Station.” Like the name says, it shows a London Underground station in a two-story corner building.

The beauty part is that it also depicts the subterranean Underground tube with a train waiting. The station building is housed in a brownstone structure.

Aside from the station entryway the building boasts a coffee stand and mailbox at ground level. The upper floor features an architect’s office filled with computer screens, maps and a drafting machine.

Commuters descend to the tube by way of an escalator, where a train driver is ready to welcome them aboard.

This marks the first contemporary-period building set to enter the LEGO Ideas First 2022 Review Stage. London with Underground Station would be a challenging but sweet addition to a LEGO City-scape. But First 2022 Stage is only just begun. More product ideas are certainly inbound after gaining the requisite support.

LEGO Toilet Gains 10-K Support for First 2022 Review

Something potentially smells with this next LEGO Ideas 10-K support submission for the First 2022 Review Stage. Before we get to that however, let’s talk about the LEGO Technic line. Its selling point beyond the cool vehicle sets is building mechanical functions using Technic pieces. That should apply not just to car engines and such, but also to other machines and appliances. So what if a LEGO Ideas builder uses Technic pieces to create a set that, err, stinks? Okay, that’s a tired joke and avoidable with proper hygienic care. But what else do you say to a brick-built toilet?

The LEGO Toilet, by Ideas 10-K member NickLafreniere1. You read right. This product idea recreates a flush toilet in LEGO, with the flushing mechanism using Technic pieces. The flush tank is viewable from the back, where Technic elements make up the float valve, drop valve, etc.

The flush lever on the tank moves the mechanism as intended. Other movable elements include the toilet seat and the removable tank lid. The toilet sits on a black baseplate foundation. Blue pieces inside the bowl simulate the interior being filled with toilet water.

As a quality mechanical set, The LEGO Toilet comes with an info plaque (including a buildable mini-toilet décor) and cleaning brush.

NickLafreniere1 also springs for a plumber minifigure with to-scale plunger and toolbox, plus brick separator all on its own. This is hands down one of the quirkier product ideas to gain the necessary support for a Review Stage. Let’s wait and see if the Review team goes for it. The product page comments at least think this is great.

LEGO Ideas Set #40: The Globe (21332) Revealed

The release of official LEGO Ideas sets seems to have become somewhat haphazard. LEGO announces several product ideas that have passed a Review Stage or two. The order of reveals however, doesn’t necessarily become the order of release. The “Home Alone” set by adwind got announced for production before TOMOELL’s Fender Stratocaster. But the latter got numbered 21329 and launched October 2021, while the former became 21330 and followed a month later. Sonic the Hedgehog (21331) was one of the more recently-announced Ideas Review-passers. However its successor as Ideas set release #40 was confirmed earlier.

As told by Brickset, LEGO finally revealed its next Ideas set with an online listing: The Globe (21332). Exactly like the name says, this is a brick-built Earth globe of standard size, capable of rotating on its frame. LEGO tiles on the globe’s surface not only depict the oceans and continent, but also the climate/vegetation of each land region. The continents are also labeled with glow-in-the-dark nameplates for convenient identification. This LEGO globe by French builder Guillaume Roussel (Disneybrick55) survived the First 2020 Review Stage. It makes for fun educational display in studies and desktops. Expect the LEGO Ideas Globe (21332) to arrive in February.

LEGO Ideas Sonic the Hedgehog (21331) Gets Designer Video

We’re over halfway through the month when LEGO Ideas Sonic the Hedgehog (21331) was released. The highly sought-after set already enjoys a 4½ average customer review rating, attesting to its playability enjoyment. It helps the build allows for multiple set copies to be connected. This potentially extends the brick-built game world. Indeed, customization plays a significant part. The original LEGO Ideas creator, Viv Grannell/toastergrl, even proposed alternative methods/pieces to assemble the buildable Eggman figure. In terms of promotion, LEGO leaned on nostalgia for their Sonic 21331 teaser video. What else are we missing, a major-set release designer video? Not anymore.

As told by The Brick Fan, we now have the designer video for LEGO Ideas Sonic the Hedgehog (21331). Two members of the design team talk us through the development process for this hot item. Sam Johnson (design manager) and Lauren King (graphic designer) point out some neat references in the set. Apparently the sticker on the back of the build with the scoreboard contains a shout-out to toastergrl. Want more trivia? The Dr. Eggman figure had its detailing printed using new machinery to rotate the printing element 45 degrees. And hey, life-preserver LEGO pieces, repurposed into the power rings? Now that’s clever recycling.

“Wild West Mine” Gets 10-K Support on LEGO Ideas First 2022 Stage

Even as we wait for the previous two Review Stages to pronounce their official-set judgments, LEGO Ideas keeps creating. For most of this week we’ll probably be featuring many additions to the Ideas First 2022 Review Stage. While Third 2021, which ended last week, was dominated by buildings, the first few submissions here offer greater variety. Then again, our first 10-K-supported product idea feature this week is…a structural build. Then again, this one also boasts impressive terrain features. It also shares thematic similarities to one of the final Third 2021 Review entries. For LEGO Ideas consideration: the “Wild West Mine.”

A member with the on-the-nose username of Disney Recreation presents to us this western-themed play-set. Like the name implies, the action takes place in a desolate mountainside goldmine. It’s dotted with rickety shacks and connected by a roundabout railway winding through mining tunnels and canyons.

Two rugged prospectors brave the solitude and harsh surroundings (note: cow skeleton, vultures, coyote) to strike the mother-lode.

They transport their hard earnings by train, risking danger from a duo of bandits staking out their mine.

Will they manage to secure their gold, or are the desperadoes going to make an easy killing in wealth?

This is a well-designed set will an organic blending of manmade structures to desert nature. The outside shacks pull off being both furnished and dilapidated. We also like the mobile train with the closed-circuit track around the whole thing. It kind of feels like a theme park ride too, what with the name of its creator. It’s too early to tell, but Wild West Mine may well be a favored product idea for the newly-open Ideas First 2022 Review Stage.
