Update on Retiring 2016-Released LEGO Ideas Sets – And their 2018 Replacements

The thing about LEGO products is that even as a year crosses into the next and new sets, minifigures, etc are introduced in the process, on the other hand that transition also means that it’s time for certain existing products to make their final bow and retire from the stores.

We’ve run several articles on particular LEGO sets that are retiring at the end of 2017, but here is a big update of sets from the LEGO Ideas label that will be also saying goodbye. LEGO hasn’t quite specified if these will retire as expected on the turn from December 31 to January 1, but that’s a reasonable estimate.

  • Yellow Submarine (21306) – I guess this means the Beatles and friends will be returning to Pepperland after their “tour” which began in November of 2016. This is the 15th official LEGO Ideas set release, so if you still fancy getting one, head over to the Shop@Home or Amazon.

  • Caterham Seven 620R (21307) – LEGO Ideas set #14, released October 2016. This throwback to one of the most iconic retro-era British sports cars is going as well. Same places available too.

71EyxlFz6IL. SL1000

  • Adventure Time (21308) – The Cartoon Network series is still going strong at its 10th and current season, but for this LEGO Ideas set (#16) featuring brick builds of the major characters in the show, the Adventure is coming to an end. Best check Shop@Home or Amazon now.

Out with the old and in with the new, as I said earlier. In the place of these retiring sets are the latest LEGO Ideas, from a Ship in a Bottle, to Voltron the Defender of the Universe, to the awesome TRON: Legacy Light Cycle. They’re all coming sometime in 2018.

More Information About the Summer 2018 LEGO Technic Sets.

While some of the first wave of 2018 LEGO Technic sets is still expected to be out on January 1, it looks like we’re getting more information on what to expect from the LEGO Technic theme this Summer, 2018. Planned to be officially revealed during the New York Toy Fair in February, some preliminary images of these sets have found their way online. As always, we’re playing on the safe side by not revealing the proper images right here, but I will provide you with the set’s title and my first impression on these sets. I’m not really much of a Technic fan, but being a long standing LEGO theme for decades, I am very much impressed about its complexity and STEM-based designs.

Forklift Truck (42079) – 75.29 €

42079

This set comes in a predominantly blue and yellow color scheme and comes with a pallet and a drum-like build of hazardous materials. It also looks like an upgraded version of the LEGO Technic Forklift 8463 released in 2001.

Forest Harvester (42080) – 198.99 €

42080

The Forest Harvester comes in a noticeable lime green, white and yellow color scheme. Another noticeable feature is the large circular red saw piece which is kind of cool together with certain power functions, particularly the Pneumatic System V2.

Volvo Autonomous (42081) – 178.39 €

42081

This set looks more like a streamlined, upgraded version of the Volvo L350F Wheel Loader (42030) released in 2014. The concept behind this set is based on a drone operated loader, equipped with a robotic camera at the back.

Rough Terrain Crane (42082) – 357.79 €

42082

Set 42082 looks like a re-imagining of the Rough Terrain Crane (8270) from 2007. This newer version is noticeably larger and comes in a striking red color scheme. Similar to the Forest Harvester, the Rough Terrain Crane also comes with Power Functions which is the XL Motor system.

As a last note, since these sets are slated to be revealed at the New York Toy Fair, we might as well not expect any official images to be released until such time, so please pardon me for the blurred images.

Thanks to Hoth Bricks for the tip.

LEGO Ideas Ship in a Bottle (21313) Revealed!

UPDATE: These images were intentionally blurred – and we all know the reason why.

The reveals just keep on coming. Earlier today, we have what it seems to be our very first image of the next LEGO Ideas set, Ship in a Bottle (21313) by Jacob Sadovich. If you recall back in August, LEGO Ideas Ship in a Bottle (21313) is based on the MOC that Sadovich successfully submitted and approved during the LEGO Ideas Third 2016 Review Stage. Eventually, it topped the rest of the candidates together with my very own, personal favorite Voltron-Defender of the Universe by Leandro ‘Lendy’ Tayag. These two sets were given the thumbs up, seal of approval by the LEGO Ideas Review Team with the Ship in a Bottle finally having a release date of January 17, 2018 as reported by Zusammengebaut.

Apparently, LEGO insider afro_man_news1 was able to capture this image which was eventually shared across LEGO fan forums. I have to say that the LEGO Ideas Design Team really poured out their hearts in the thoughtful redesigning of the LEGO Ideas Ship in a Bottle. As any Ideas set, they tweaked on the original design, improved its overall looks, and the result simply wows anyone in their tracks. Check the image below.

ship in a bottle 21313 1

What I love about this Ideas set is the fact on how the designers recreated the base, giving it an overall classic old school look. The designers were also keen in details such as the bottle’s cork and the globe pieces mounted on top of the base. I’m not quite sure if it’s a new piece, but it simply looks gorgeous! The bottle itself is now more streamlined, which gives the set a more natural look. I just feel that the ship itself is a bit underwhelming, quite bulky as compared to the original vision of Sadovich. In any case, the LEGO Ideas Ship in a Bottle (21313) is still a very beautiful set which would be a fitting prelude to Voltron once the final product is unveiled. LEGO Ideas has seen a lot of excellent sets recently, and this recent offering further affirms the creative talents of the LEGO Community.

As mentioned earlier, the Ship in a Bottle (21313) is expected to be out on shelves by January 17, so it will  not be long until we see official images of it.

More LEGO Harry Potter Sets in 2018!

We’re just counting the days before we officially welcome 2018, and with more than 120 new LEGO sets to debut on January 1 (much of it has been made available already across toy store outlets such as Toys R Us), it looks like LEGO is on full steam ahead with more new sets slated for the second half of the year. We recently had a glimpse of the latest 2018 LEGO Speed Champions and Star Wars sets, and now we’re receiving reports from the rumor mill that another beloved license and film franchise is expected to make waves this upcoming year.

LEGO Harry Potter Logo

According to a report shared by The Brick Fan, fans of the wizarding world of Harry Potter will be glad to know that there have been talks that hint on five (5) LEGO sets to be released later this year: 3 from the Harry Potter franchise itself, and 2 from Fantastic Beasts. Considering that the latter still has a sequel slated to be released in November, it seems reasonable for LEGO to dedicate two of these sets for the upcoming Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them: Crimes of Grindelwald. Furthermore, it will be a good move for LEGO to offer these as regular sets since the only Fantastic Beasts LEGO sets that we have been part of the now officially discontinued LEGO Dimensions theme. Currently, we have the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them: Play the Complete Movie Story (71253) and Tina Goldstein Fun Packs (71257). Furthermore, it will be nice of LEGO if it can also render in bricks a particular scene from the first film, while the second one will be a call out for the upcoming sequel.

71253 1
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them: Play the Complete Movie Story (71253).

There are still a lot of source materials in the world of Harry Potter that LEGO designers can find inspiration with, and as much as I want to see more LEGO sets in reference to the last four HP films, I feel that most LEGO and Harry Potter fans will opt for a more ‘generic’ type of set that highlights some of the most popular locations in the wizarding world of Harry. Perhaps we can have a larger remake of previous LEGO Harry Potter sets such as the Quidditch Match (4737), a motorized Hogwarts Express (4841), and a grander rendition of the iconic Hogwarts Castle (4842). The possibilities seem to be endless.

4842 1
Hogwarts Castle (4842).

Lastly, there are also talks of having a LEGO Harry Potter CMF due to be released sometime in August next year. Strictly speaking, this is not a first for the theme. Back in 2002, LEGO released a total of 21 minifigures that were given away for free with qualifying purchases of LEGO Harry Potter sets. These were given in four batches labelled as LEGO Harry Potter Minifigure Collection Galleries (1 to 4). Now, if an official LEGO HP CMF is in order, then we can expect a lot of candidates to be included. Topping my list will be Sirius Black (since we only have him in two LEGO sets back in 2004), Bellatrix Lestrange (which only made a single appearance in LEGO Harry Potter The Burrow 4840), and the hilariously mischievous twins, Fred and George Weasley (only available back then as part of the D2C set Diagon Alley 10217). I also wouldn’t mind seeing the house-elf Dobby again in his minifigure form so I’m excited about the possibilities that this new CMF line will offer.

Like any other rumors, we should take this with a pinch of salt. What are your thoughts about this piece of news? Are you excited to see more LEGO Harry Potter sets in 2018? LEGO UK Offers Pick-a-Brick Box at shop.LEGO.com In Line With Boxing Day 2017.

Tuesday, December 26, is the day after Christmas. Over in the UK, it’s also Boxing Day, the “other” day of gift-giving for them and other countries that were part of the British Empire of old. Speaking of gifts, LEGO has some presents to give away at that side of the Atlantic as well.

And this is one of the most generous giveaways you could ever avail of in a whole year of LEGO promos. For Boxing Day, every LEGO set bought from shop.LEGO.com in the UK, France and Germany will entitle the buyer to one free Pick-a-Brick box with their purchase.

tn gwp boxing day 300x250 jpg

These Pick-a-Brick boxes come into play the following year, as from January 1 to March 31 of 2018, they can bring the box they received to their local LEGO store to be filled up with their choice of LEGO building elements like bricks and so forth. The only exceptions are minifigures, keychains and similar accessories.

Boxing Day 2017 is the first time that the Pick-a-Brick box has been made available for online LEGO shoppers. And they potentially would not have to spend more than the usual set prices to get one, what with the nifty discount rates being offered for particular LEGO sets on December 26.

LEGO Star Wars Sets for Summer 2018 Teased

We’re almost halfway through the last week of December, before 2017 gives way to 2018. Our past reports here on The Brick Show are more than enough proof to LEGO fans that our good old brick, model and minifigure company isn’t held back by words like “next year” when announcing new products.

This is easily seen in the recent word that’s come out on some new LEGO Star Wars set releases scheduled for summer of next year. The interesting thing is that apparently, LEGO’s Summer 2018 batch appears to be updated versions of existing models that have already been released in years past.

Here’s a list of what LEGO Star Wars collectors can expect a few months from now:

  • Jedi & Clone Troopers Battle Pack (75206)
  • Anakin’s Jedi Starfighter (75214) – includes Anakin Skywalker and R2-D2 minifigures
  • X-Wing Starfighter (75218) – includes 2 pilots and 2 astromech droid minifigures
  • Sandcrawler (75220) – includes minifigures Luke Skywalker, 2 Jawas, 3 droids
  • Super Battle Droid (75538)
  • 501st Legion Clone Trooper & AT-RT Walker (75539)
  • Star Wars 2018 Advent Calendar (75213)

The last three items are notable as the Super Battle Droid (75538) and the 501st Legion Clone Trooper & AT-RT Walker (75539) are new sets without prior versions.

And next year’s Star Wars Advent Calendar sure is coming early. There’s even an early box image with hints as to what micros and minifigures are in store. All three trilogy sets are well-represented with a Prequel-era Naboo star-fighter, Original-era Tatooine land-speeder and Sequel-era character Rose Tico. Get hyped now.

The Brick Show Team Reviews the 2018 LEGO Star Wars Sets!

As we’re about to close 2017, Jason and the rest of the Brick Show team worked really hard to round up all the upcoming 2018 LEGO sets that came out at various Toys R Us outlets and other retailers. We saw the team’s excellent, no holds barred reviews on these anticipated LEGO sets such as 2018 LEGO Batman Movie sets which are still to be officially out in LEGO stores and shop.LEGO.com starting January 1.

This time, we get to see them review the 2018 LEGO Star Wars sets, including a great deal of Microfighters and several sets from The Last Jedi. Though we already have news of what’s next this August in the LEGO brick galaxy far, far, away, there is still plenty of time to add more LEGO Star Wars sets in your collection.  So, if you still have some holiday LEGO Star Wars hunting that you want to check out from your list, then better check out these reviews first and see what they have to offer.

A Look at the LEGO Architecture Skylines Las Vegas (21038).

Last month, we saw the reveal of the LEGO Architecture Skylines Shanghai (21039) set which is also expected to be one of the many sets to be released online and in-store beginning January 1. This is the seventh set in the Skylines subtheme that intends to feature some of the world’s most modern buildings and locations in one neat, minibuild collectible. Originally, the Shanghai (21039) set is slated to be released together with another Skylines set, but sadly, due to the unfortunate incident involving one of the hotels in the Las Vegas area, the LEGO Group has decided to either postpone or cancel the release of the LEGO Architecture Skylines Las Vegas (21038), as noted by Brick set.

As it turns out, it looks like we have to wait a bit longer before we can see this set released. But thanks to some tips from several LEGO fan forums, we get to see a glimpse of how the Las Vegas (21038) set will look like. Our friends pointed us to an Italian online store, EPrice, which posted a box art image of the LEGO Architecture Skylines Las Vegas (21038) as you can see below. Set 21038 is expected to have a total of 487 pieces and will retail for 39.99 Euros.

I know some of you will probably think that the brick police will soon catch up with this post and request this to be deleted. Just to be clear, this image was posted on a legitimate e-commerce website such as EPrice, and it is still up as of this writing. But then again, we’ll quickly comply if there is a takedown order for this one.

As you can see from the image above, the LEGO Architecture Las Vegas (21038) set is composed of several well-known buildings and landmarks in Las Vegas, including the Freemont Street Experience, Stratosphere Tower, Luxor Hotel, Encore Hotel, and Mandalay Bay Hotel. The relative scaling of these minibuilds are spot on, with the Luxor Hotel cleverly recreated using some Egyptian minifigure accessories.

Again, we do not have an exact release date yet, if ever this set will still be released. There are talks of it being postponed until April so we just have to wait and see by then. Furthermore, the Skylines subtheme is often released in sets of three so we may somehow expect another similar set to be announced later on. If you’re into LEGO Architecture and would love to collect these Skylines sets, be sure to keep tabs with us as we post these latest developments as soon as they are available.

WATCH: How To Create A Platinum LEGO R2-D2 Minifigure.

If you recall, LEGO has launched another contest where you can have the chance to bring home a solid platinum, LEGO R2-D2 minifigure just by entering a raffle. The nice part of it is that there is no required purchase to join, but to simply subscribe to LEGO’s email list for future correspondence and announcements. Two of these minifigure blings will be raffled away, with an estimated value of more than $3,200 each. The raffle period is currently running until January 12, and is open to all residents of Europe and the US, and other countries where LEGO Brand Stores can be found except for Asia.

Now, just a few moments ago, LEGO has posted via its Facebook page a video, showing how these prized minifigures are crafted. I have to say that making these prize collectibles really requires a lot of patience and skill, especially that most of the process is done by hand. It also looks like LEGO has more in store other than the platinum versions of R2-D2. We can see from the video below that other than the platinum minifigs, there are also silver and white gold ones that were created. I’m not sure on what LEGO will do or what they intend to do with the silver and gold R2s, but having one of these is surely a catch of a lifetime for any AFOL.

This contest is open to all contestants 18 years old and above, and be sure to visit the contest registration page to have your chance of winning one of these ultra rare collectibles. May the Brick Force be with you.

Merry Christmas! Last Segment of LEGO Star Wars Advent Calendar 2017 Updates

UPDATE: Thanks are in order to Bricket’s CapnRex101 for sharing the following images.

Well, here we are on the big day itself: December 24, the last day covered by the LEGO Star Wars Advent Calendar for this year (set 75184). This update will complete our blurb coverage on all the micro-models and minifigures we’ve been getting for every day of the 2017 version. Let’s finish up.

Day 19: TIE Striker – Seen in action during Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. This sleek Imperial TIE fighter-craft variant also got a full LEGO model version in set 75154. The advent micro-version is servicable, although the scaling of dimensions is iffy, especially with the fuselage. Still good though.

24293471437 8d3dd4c633 b

Day 20: TX-225 GAVw Hover Tank – Another Rogue One Imperial vehicle, an armored fighting machine that’s not a walker for a change. It’s a fairly good micro conversion of the regular LEGO Star Wars set (75152).

39146866752 bdd0034fdb b

Day 21: Imperial technician Kent Deezling – A Rogue One bit character, his minifigure is actually part of the regular TIE Striker LEGO set (75154). As before, he’s got a blaster and helmet covering a transceiver-wearing face.

 39166243792 e2b65ab032 b25328190148 16fd8dcafe b

Day 22: Star Wars Speeder Sleigh – The Big Day is ever so near, so here’s a holiday sleigh with Christmas goodies, but set in the Star Wars galaxy, making it a speeder with engines. Pretty cheeky.

38530112184 525c671ce1 b

Day 23: AT-ST – We can’t really place this one vehicle in a specific film; it could be Rogue One, or Return of the Jedi, or even The Last Jedi which premiered this month. It’s irrelevant though; the Imperial AT-ST has always been a favorite, whether the regular LEGO set (75153) or this micro version.

38506542534 65f063d5e2 b

Day 24: Santa BB-8 – What a way to wrap up the Star Wars Advent countdown this year. The Santa figure this time around is Poe Dameron’s personal astro-mech droid – and breakout character of the Star Wars sequel trilogy – the roly-poly cute (and self-aware of it) BB-8.

38382800425 0298d5094b b

Before we sign off, I have to come clean with an erratum for our previous 2017 Advent Calendar update post, the penultimate in the series. Eagle eyes would note that the actual Day 18 surprise for this year is a micro Y-Wing bomber. That has been fixed.

And with that, our advent countdown in the company of LEGO Star Wars is complete. Thank your for staying with our reports all the way. Merry Christmas to All!
