LEGO Reveals Its First SDCC 2018 Exclusive Minifigure: Sheriff Deadpool

As we count the days before this year’s San Diego Comic Con, LEGO has now revealed its first exclusive LEGO minifigure to grace the occasion. Revealed via Twitter eventually, it looks like LEGO fans can’t have too much of the Merc with the mouth. The Sheriff Deadpool is this year’s SDCC 2018 LEGO Marvel Super Heroes exclusive minifigure, which probably takes its cue from the recent film sequel.

For the record, last year’s SDCC saw another Deadpool-inspired minifigure which is the Deadpool Duck, as part of the marketing hype for the LEGO Marvel Superheroes 2 video game at that time. As far as this latest minifig iteration of Deadpool is concerned, everything about it is pretty exclusive. The SDCC 2018 LEGO Sheriff Deadpool minifigure comes with a whole set of different prints as compared to the very rare Deadpool minifig found in 2012’s Wolverine’s Chopper Showdown (6866). From the head piece down to the leg prints, it is definitely unique with its sheriff garb and other fine details (I love the bull horn accent on the belt buckle), plus it has a couple of accessories included such as a false moustache and a cowboy hat.

As a fan of Deadpool, I definitely have no qualms over this choice of SDCC LEGO minifigure exclusive. If you are not attending this year’s San Diego Comic Con and you still wish to have this minifigure, then be ready to be blown away by the over inflated prices of these little guys in the aftermarket. Their prices can really be exaggerated, and I’m not a particular fan of such practice.

As announced before, this exclusive will be available to SDCC 2018 attendees via a lottery system. We are still waiting for the reveal of the LEGO exclusive DC and LEGO Movie 2 minifigures respectively, which can be anytime this week. Stay tuned!

LEGO Seasonal Penguin Girl (5005251) Minifigure Spotted

Though the summer heat wave is still ravaging across the US, here’s a cool, welcome treat of things to come from LEGO. An eBay listing has revealed what looks like to be our next LEGO seasonal minifigure, following the likes of the Banana Guy Summer minifigure (5005250) released three months ago. The LEGO Seasonal Penguin Girl (5005251) minifigure set is our next seasonal minifig which takes its cue from the Penguin Boy of LEGO’s Series 16 CMF released in 2016.

The LEGO Seasonal Penguin Girl (5005251) comes with a printed cardboard cabin blanketed by snow and other winter motifs. The minifigure itself is similar to the LEGO CMF Series 16 Penguin Boy, except of course for the different face print and a torso that includes a printed scarf. The Penguin Girl (5005251) also comes with a pair of skis in contrast to the ice skates that Penguin Boy has. This is a great opportunity to have another costumed minifigure in your collection while also having an excellent companion to your Penguin Boy minifig.

We have very little information as of this writing about this next seasonal minifigure, such as its actual retail price and availability. But like other seasonal CMFs before it, our best guess is that it will also be available at LEGO brand stores and other LEGOLAND outlets across the US. Stay tuned for more info. A Look at the LEGO Wizarding World Harry Potter Collectible Minifigures (71022) Box Distribution

Here’s a timely update on what we’ve learned so far about this next big CMF craze. Following LEGO’s official reveal of the highly anticipated LEGO Wizarding World Harry Potter Collectible Minifigures (71022) a couple of weeks ago, there were earlier impressions that these J.K. Rowling inspired characters will be somehow equally represented among 60 blind bags that each box has.

However, according to Brickset guru CapnRex101, this next CMF series will consist of certain rare figures and one chase minifigure per box very much similar to what LEGO did with the LEGO CMF Series 18 with its Classic Police Officer minifig. Here’s a breakdown of the LEGO Wizarding World Harry Potter Collectible Minifigures (71022) box distribution:

As you can see from the above list provided by Brickset, the chase minifigure from this series will be the dubious Percival Graves. For a while there I thought that the chase minifigure will be Harry with his Invisibility Cloak. Rumors regarding the inclusion of a chase minifig in this series were circulating around LEGO fan forums for quite some time. Personally, I feel that there are a lot of better candidates to have a chase minifig other than Percival Graves. I guess I will not really understand LEGO’s decision on this one.

71022 22 — Percival Graves will be the chase minifigure in the LEGO Wizarding World Harry Potter Collectible Minifigures (71022).

Looking further on the list, we will also see that the characters of Luna Lovegood, Sybil Trelawney, Harry Potter (with Invisibility Cloak) and Credence Barebone only has 2 minifigures for each them, leaving any LEGO CMF completionist having only 2 complete sets per box – less Percival graves of course. With such limited box distribution, I strongly feel that the cost for one complete set of this CMF series will be considerably higher in the aftermarket as compared to other LEGO CMF series before it. I guess we just have to wait and see.

The LEGO Harry Potter Collectible Minifigures (71022) are slated to be released in August across LEGO Stores and at shop.LEGO.com.

LEGO Ideas Project Steamboat Willie Achieves 10K Votes

After 2 years of gathering fan support and approval, we now have our next candidate to qualify for this year’s LEGO Ideas Review Stage. We followed Steamboat Willie’s development since 2016 and it caught our eye because of the Disney legacy that it alludes to. This LEGO Ideas project by szabomate90 pays tribute to early attempts of Walt Disney to bring cartoon animation to the masses, and now the LEGO Ideas Project Steamboat Willie has garnered the necessary 10K fan support in order to qualify for the 2018 LEGO Ideas Review Stage.

Coming in at 156 LEGO pieces, the set features the iconic Steamboat Willie in its classic monochromatic color scheme, with a similarly colored LEGO Mickey Mouse minifigure. Though I’m glad that this set has made it this far especially after two long years of waiting, I’m quite skeptical if this project will gain the approval of the LEGO Ideas Review Team considering that policy changes in the LEGO fan platform requires that all submitted projects must not be a part of any existing LEGO themes. Since LEGO already has an active of Disney-inspired sets, and even has an existing LEGO Mickey Mouse collectible minifigure, I’m not really sure if Steamboat Willie will make it to final cut.

Steamboat Willie is the first fully synchronized sound cartoon directed by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks.

It was the debute of Mickey Mouse in a cartoon the first to be distributed and the third to be produced.

So as an animator and a Lego fan I’d like to pay my respect to that marvelous production, which since was created then inspired a lot of talented artists.

Because Disney Minifigures arrived, I have the luck to create a Mickey Mouse related set with him as well. In addition I repaint the figure to match the original 1928’s appearance.

The model designed to be tiny, easy to build and playable. You can put Mickey Mouse inside the boat also you can play with the cranes.

The LEGO Ideas Project Steamboat Willie is the fourth LEGO Ideas Project that qualifies for the next LEGO Ideas Review Stage together with the International Space Station, SpaceX – The Ultimate Collection, and SpaceX Falcon Heavy.

Limited Edition LEGO 60th Anniversary Commemorative Pen Holder Now Available in LEGO Store Taiwan

The LEGO Store in Taiwan is currently running a promotion from July 6 to August 19 as part of its commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the LEGO brick. The limited edition, LEGO 60th Anniversary Commemorative Pen Holder is a promotional set that comes free for every single receipt purchase of any LEGO sets worth 2,800 TWD and above or roughly 92 USD. This promotional set seems to come with a considerable number of pieces featuring a brick-built pen holder that resembles a yellow 2X4 LEGO brick, a space to hold other smaller items, and a mobile phone stand. The announcement for the said promotional was made via LEGO Store Taiwan’s official Facebook page.

Perhaps what could be the best part of this set is the inclusion of the 60 Years commemorative 2×4 plate which is only found in the recent LEGO Classic Building Bigger Thinking sets, and the 421-piece 60 Years of the LEGO Brick (40290) promotional set. Having this collectible LEGO piece in another promotional set such as the LEGO 60th Anniversary Commemorative Pen Holder is a very welcomed move. I like the idea of having a brick-built pen holder, much more so as a great way to show your appreciation to the legacy of the LEGO brick. It’s a cool study or work table accessory that any AFOL must have.

I hope that this promotional makes its way to the US and to the rest of the world. LEGO stores and their affiliates in Asia often run their own promotional sets and contest prizes that I wish were available elsewhere. One example is last year’s TRU Singapore’s exclusive giant minifigure holder/display that can hold 20 minifigures on display, which is a great way to flaunt those 2017 TRU Bricktober collectible minifigs.

LEGO Formally Announces Its First Plant-Based Set: the LEGO Plants for Plants (40320)

Earlier this year, LEGO has announced its commitment in helping to curb climate change by reducing their company’s environmental impact. One of the many ways they managed to do this is through the use of a special kind of plastic made out of plant-based components to be used in creating future LEGO bricks and pieces. Though not entirely biodegradable, these new LEGO pieces are made from sustainable sourced sugarcane which means that the impact to the environment caused by producing these bricks will be significantly lower as compared to their usual methods of creating ABS plastic. The LEGO Group is committed in moving towards this direction, and as scheduled, has now rolled out its very first plant-based product which is aptly named, LEGO Plants for Plants (40320).

Beginning in August, LEGO fans can now have their first set of environment-friendly LEGO pieces in the form of the LEGO Plants for Plants (40320). As mentioned in the LEGO Store August Calendar, this set of LEGO botanical pieces consisting of grass, shrubs, and leaves will be available as a gift with purchase set for every single receipt purchase of any LEGO products worth $35 and above. The set contains 29 plant pieces made of bright lime green and classic green colors.

This very first plant-based set marks LEGO’s first steps of making all of its core products (which means all LEGO plastic pieces) and packaging made out of sustainable materials by year 2030. The new plant-based LEGO elements will begin appearing in LEGO boxes throughout 2018. The new plant-based elements are drawn from the botanical range of LEGO elements – including trees, leaves and bushes- and are made from a plastic produced using sustainably sourced sugarcane, plants from plants!

Some of the botanical LEGO elements are available for the first time in brilliant lime green colour, as well as the classic LEGO green. The elements are compatible with the first ever LEGO bricks made 60 years ago and are an example of the LEGO Group’s continued commitment to innovation while staying true to the quality, play experience and durability that is at the heart of the LEGO system.

The plastic used to make the elements is polyethylene, a soft, durable and flexible plastic made from sustainably sourced sugarcane, in accordance with guidance from the Bioplastic Feedstock Alliance (BFA) and third party certified global standards. The new elements are technically identical to existing LEGO botanical elements and have been tested to ensure the sustainably sourced plant-based plastic meets the high standards for quality and safety that the LEGO Group has, and consumers expect from LEGO products.

The new plant-based LEGO elements will begin appearing in LEGO boxes throughout 2018.

LEGOLAND Billund Reclaims the Title for the Tallest LEGO Tower Built

Last week, LEGOLAND Billund and the rest of the community joined hands (and bricks) in attempting to dethrone Tel Aviv, Israel from the title of having the tallest LEGO tower ever built. As part of the theme park’s 50^th anniversary celebration from June 26 to 30, park visitors and LEGO’s top notch Master Builders embarked on an attempt to win back their title which they once held in 2003.

Park visitors and guests had the opportunity on working on the various sections of the tower, giving them a truly memorable hands-on experience of participating in this world-record breaking event. The tower was even designed to feature the pretty cool details like the name of the park and the Danish flag.

Though the Guinness World Records still has to certify this feat, the structure’s final measure consisting of more than a half million bricks, stood proud at 36.26 meters beating Tel Aviv’s record by less than a meter. Once certified, LEGOLAND Billund will once more reclaim the title of having the world’s tallest tower ever built using LEGO bricks. LEGO Launches The Awesome Building Buddies Competition

Here’s your chance to make the LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part more awesome. LEGO has just launched a building competition wherein selected winners will have the chance to have their builds featured during the closing credits of the LEGO movie sequel. The Awesome Building Buddies Competition allows pairs of builders (think of Tyler and Sean for example) to come up with their most favorite builds and to combine them to make something super.

To join, contestants need to download, print out and sign the contest entry submission form which you can download on the contest’s web site. From the looks of it, there seems to be no age limit so adults can join in as well. It should also be noted that as per official contest rules, if you will opt to include minifigures in your entries, then you must only use characters that are not part of any third-party licenses. Thus, if you’re going to include the cast of the LEGO Movie, you are allowed to add them except Batman (which is quite odd, because he is part of both the first and second films). You can also use characters from the LEGO City, Ninjago, Friends, Creator, Classic, Nexo Knights, or Elves themes. Entries that include minifigure characters from Disney, Marvel, DC, Jurassic World, Star Wars and other similar third-party licenses will not be accepted.

The deadline for submission of entries is on July 31, 2018 at 23:59 CET so be sure to have your bricks and building buddy ready before then. Here’s a quick rundown of how to enter the contest.

LEGO Invites LEGO VIP Members To A Top Secret Unveiling Event In Leicester Square, London

It’s a great time to be both a LEGO Builder and a fan of the long-running James Bond spy film franchise. The past few weeks have seen a near daily barrage of promotion for the upcoming collaboration between LEGO, the Bond franchise and Aston Martin. The latest development on this has the LEGO Creator Expert Aston Martin DB5 (10262) being put up for pre-order at the LEGO Store in Budapest (sounds like a top secret place that Agent 007 would visit in his classic films). But are there any further updates on when the set will be introduced to the world?

As it turns out, the LEGO Store in Leicester Square, London will be busy for the next couple of weeks – now that it has posted an invitation (via Facebook) to all LEGO VIP card holders to attend the unveiling of a ‘top secret’ LEGO Creator Expert set. Slated on July 18, from 10AM to 1PM (UTC), attendees will witness live the reveal of the much hyped LEGO Creator Expert Aston Martin DB5 (10262) in all its silver gray glory.

The said event will also allow LEGO VIPs an early access to purchase the set, to meet and greet the set designers and have their box sets signed by them. Pre-registration to attend the event is required and you can do so by heading to this link, which is also mentioned in the event details below as posted by LEGO.

In the past, the LEGO Store in Leicester Square, London has been instrumental in the launch and early VIP access for some of LEGO’s most notable sets including the LEGO Ideas TRON: Legacy (21314), the LEGO Star Wars UCS Millennium Falcon (75192) and last year’s LEGO Creative Expert set the London Bus (10258).

But for those who can’t be there for the occasion, LEGO extends the early VIP access online at shop.LEGO.com from July 18 until 31. Watch out for more updates on this in the next few days so stay tuned here on the Brick Show.
