With LEGO and Universal further sealing their partnership to create future brickfilms, the potential to offer more licensed themes that are under Universal’s cinematic repertoire just leveled up. While LEGO Trolls are now up over at LEGO Shop@Home and the offer of LEGO Minions sets is now set in stone, it looks like a new theme is speeding over the horizon. According to Brick Fanatics’ssources, it is most likely that we will also be seeing a new LEGO Fast and Furious set based on the long-running franchise.
The Brick Fan is also reporting that this possible LEGO Fast and Furious set will be a stand-alone vehicle less the minifigures, that will most likely follow the design tracks of what LEGO did with the LEGO Technic App-Controlled Top Gear Rally Car (42109). Furthermore, there are speculations that this new set will be based on Brian O’Conner’s 1995 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS as seen from the first film. I think this is a great choice and fitting tribute for Paul Walker if this news turns out to be true considering the fact that this year will mark the release of the franchise’s 9th film slated for May.
A LEGO Technic or Creator Expert set is in order if such is indeed the case, especially considering that similar to the Top Gear Rally Car, a set based on a LEGO Fast and Furious theme is expected to cater more to adult fans of LEGO. I can just imagine how cool it is to see the Porsche 911 GT3 RS (42056), Bugatti Chiron (42083), and Ford Mustang (10265) together with a possible LEGO Mitsubishi Eclipse GS set.
As cool as it may sound, consider this piece of news as a rumor until such time that LEGO officially confirms this to be true.
If you recall back in 2016, when things are still smooth sailing between the LEGO Group and Warner Bros, a grand plan was made to bring the LEGO brand at the forefront of mainstream media. Riding on the success of The LEGO Movie back in 2014, more films were slated to be released following the footsteps of the LEGO Group’s first theatrical endeavor. Though we saw the success of the LEGO Batman Movie, the next two brick-films – the LEGO Ninjago Movie and the LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part – were not that close to what their predecessors managed to achieve. So it doesn’t come as a surprise if LEGO and Warner Bros. eventually decided to pull the plug on yet another possible theatrical collaboration. The Billion Brick Race was initially planned for release sometime in May this year, but unfortunately, we will never see this film on the big screen. And these include potential LEGO tie-in sets that it may come about later on.
However, such setbacks did not discourage the film’s would-be director to share some of his minifigure character designs for The Billion Brick Race. Jorge R. Gutirrez, who also helmed the animated film, The Book of Life, took to Twitter to share some of his initial character sketches of the colorful characters that were expected to appear in the film. Take a look.
I found the character designs from my take for the LEGO film I was trying to get going at WB. With LEGO leaving WB I think these are safe to show. pic.twitter.com/bt2sNc2siv
Since the shelving of the film project and Jorge’s departure from Warner Bros, he saw it fitting to share his creation with the rest of the world and to the LEGO fan community in particular. There is no clear definite plot yet regarding The Billion Brick Race, but the way the characters were designed gives us a grasp of the overall feel of the film.
Admittedly, Jorge incorporated some of the 80s and 90s pop icons and symbols and fused it with his signature art design. I also appreciate what he did coming up with a LEGO minifigure character in a wheelchair. The diversity that he introduces with regards to these minifig character sketches is also admirable, together with his keen attention to detail. Just take a look at tattoos on some of the minifigs’ arms.
One particular point of interest is the oversized minifigure of what I think is a wrestler which follows the same mold as that of Axl from the now discontinuedLEGO Nexo Knights. I feel that this form of minifigure has a lot of potential for a LEGO set but sadly, we don’t see it further developed after the end of Nexo Knights and now much more with the shelving of The Billion Brick Race.

Who knows if Universal will eventually pick up where Warner Bros left have of with regards to this would-be brickfilm. I personally want to see this next LEGO film happen, and perhaps we just have to wait and see if the LEGO Group and Universal will put this back on the table.
It looks like LEGO is cozying up with Universal Pictures, with the goal of working towards its next brickfilm endeavor. After launching its series of major brick-inspired animations from the highly successful LEGO Movie and toward its not lackluster sequel, the LEGO Group practically cut ties with WB with the unfortunate cancellation of its next brickfilm, a LEGO Movie spin-off, The Billion Brick Race.
However, an exclusive report from the Variety now tells us that Universal Pictures will be the next film production company that will most likely pick up the pieces were WB left off. According to Variety’s sources that are privy to the confidential deal, the said partnership will have a “much broader use” of the various IPs that LEGO featured in the past. Another exciting thing about the deal is the idea is having the most famous films under Universal’s belt translated into LEGO bricks. We already know that a LEGO Minions theme will be coming in the first half of 2020, and a bunch of LEGO Trolls World Tour tie-in sets will also be available come by January 1st. And after the success of both the LEGO Jurassic Park and Jurassic World sets, LEGO has a pretty good grasp of the benefits of partnering with Universal.
Here’s what Variety has to say about this LEGO-Universal deal.
Universal Pictures is in talks with the LEGO Group to develop new feature film properties based on the popular block toys, numerous sources close to the pending deal told Variety.
Producer Dan Lin, who has made several films based on the childhood staple at Warner Bros., is expected to remain on future projects despite his overall deal at Warners.
The pact with Universal is a much broader use of the intellectual property than the previous films, sources said, which saw actors like Chris Pratt and Elizabeth Banks bring life to geometric heroes in a world populated by Legos.
Among the ideas Universal is floating is a reimagining of its own content library through the toys, sources said. “Jurassic World,” for instance, saw a spinoff LEGO series made and sold globally in 2019, which aired in the U.S. on Nickelodeon. There are also concepts floating for live-action hybrid features.
Both parties are still mum about the deal, neither denying nor confirming the rumored deal about LEGO’s next brickfilm. I’ll keep you posted once the official word comes out.
LEGO servers have been updated once again to include official images of additional LEGO Disney Princess 2020 sets that are slated to be available in January next year. If you recall from last month, the first wave of these sets was revealed by third-party retailers abroad, including some new sets that offer a new pop-up book design similar to what we’ve seen with LEGO Ideas Pop-Up Book (21315). This time around, these previously revealed sets are now listed at LEGO Shop@Home, with three, new additional sets whose official images are now unveiled for us to see.
As it seems, we will be getting four (4) new Storybook Adventure sets including one that is inspired by the Frozen 2 sequel. Mulan will also have another set dedicated to her, particularly one that shows her in a rehashed set that took inspiration from last year’s Mulan’s Training Day (41151). This is the second LEGO set that features a new minidoll version of the Disney heroine that also comes with new printings. If you’re a fan of Mulan, then this is will be a nice incentive to get this set in January.
Moana also gets another 2020 set which shows a more accurate rendition of her travel companion, Hei Hei the Rooster. I like this newer version of this spaced-out fowl as compared to how he is seen from 2017’s Moana’s Ocean Voyage (41150). His recent microfig version offers a larger eye print and a more movie-accurate color scheme.
I’ve updated this listing here to include the links to these LEGO Disney Princess 2020 sets to their respective LEGO Shop@Home pages whenever applicable. Check these out.
A few weeks ago, LEGO Batman fans were awe-struck with what could be the largest LEGO vehicle offered thus far. In their LEGO 1989 Batmobile (76139) designer video, self-confessed Tim Burton fans, and LEGO Designers Chris Perron and Adam Grabowski share their excitement on the creative process that they went through in coming up with this iconic version of the Batmobile.
The LEGO 1989 Batmobile (76139) is both impressive in its scale and the play features that go with it. Designers Chris and Adam also made sure that they stay faithful to the original 1989 depiction of the Dark Knight’s vehicle. The set features machine guns that pop up at the turn of the knob, and a slide-open cockpit that the designers managed to pull off even at a tilted angle. Speaking about the cockpit, the interior is simply loaded with fantastic details. LEGO Graphic Designer Ioana Popescu made sure that every detail counts in this legendary vehicle. I love how the steering wheel turned out in this set. The wheels in front are new wheel elements, while those at the back are taken from 2014’s LEGO DC Comics The Tumbler (76023). The set also comes with a rotating display stand that makes it an even more awesome display piece.
Since almost the entirety of the LEGO 1989 Batmobile (76139) is black, the designers were considerate to ensure that the inner workings of this set come in myriads of colors. This is extremely helpful in building such a large monochromatic set.
The choice of design for the set’s exclusive minifigures also takes their cue from Tim Burton’s vision of the Dark Knight. The LEGO 1989 Batmobile comes with three minifigures: a new version of Batman donned in a new soft plastic cowl as seen in the film; Vicki Vale with a mini brick-built camera, and of course Jack Nicholson’s rendition of The Joker. I guess for most LEGO Batman fans, the highlight of these exclusive minifigs will Batman himself, especially considering that classic cowl and cape that comes as a single piece. Having it as such and doing away with the usual swatch of cloth for Batman’s cape is clearly intentional on the part of the designers, to make it as close as to how Tim Burton’s idea of Batman is during this time. Though I’m still racking my brain on how battle-efficient Batman is in this costume when he is unable to turn his head when fighting the bad guys. Well, that’s just my opinion.
The LEGO 1989 Batmobile (76139) comes in at 3,306 pieces and is now currently available at LEGO Shop@Home retailing for $249.99 USD.
This is another case example of how much a LEGO freebie or gift-with-purchase (GWP) could be in high demand. Last month, it was revealed that a mini-version of the mammoth-sized LEGO Batman 1989 Batmobile (76139) will be offered as a promotional item to celebrate the release of its larger counterpart. Back then, the terms and conditions on how to avail of this promotional item are not known yet. It was only when this month’s LEGO Store Calendar was released that it was finally confirmed that the LEGO Batman 1989 Batmobile Limited Edition (40433) will be an exclusive freebie for those who will purchase its larger, and more expensive, cousin. For those of us who didn’t manage to get a copy of this mini-version of the 80’s classic Batmobile, then we can always head over to LEGO’s Customer Service portal now that the building instructions for this set are finally made available. You may get your copy in PDF format right here.
Truth be told, though the promo period for the LEGO Batman 1989 Batmobile Limited Edition (40433) ran for several days from November 29 to December 5, not all LEGO fans were quite happy about the exclusivity of this free set. In fact, most LEGO fans will agree that at 366 pieces and almost 12 inches in length, this promotional may deserve its own space on store shelves.
As I mentioned, this version was only made available for those who purchased its larger replica. But in case you want to build your very own mini LEGO 1989 Batmobile, then you may want to see if the following parts are available in your LEGO collection.
This new LEGO piece is necessary for those sleek, curved edges prominently seen at the front and back sides of the build of the Mini Batmobile. In the absence of this LEGO element, it will require a bit of a challenge to replicate those fine lines that make this set visually stand out.
A newer version of LEGO’s 1x8x1 Brick with Bow element.
Whatever is the case, do let us know how you intend to go around building this set without this rare piece. Share your thoughts and ideas in the comments below.
After the reveal of the latest and upcoming LEGO Star Wars set for 2020, now comes another line of Battle Packs that might prove to be the best of its kind released by LEGO. German online retailer JB Spielwaren has just listed the LEGO Star Wars Mandalorian Battle Pack (75267) on its site, giving us a close look at the highlights of this set.
If you recall back in 2011, LEGO has released a similarly themed Mandalorian Battle Pack (7914) as part of its Clone Wars ensemble. The minifigures released back then were uniformly designed and colored consistent with the timeline of events of that particular Star Wars story arc. This current minifigure version of the battle-ridden tribe shows their current state after the Empire’s downfall around 9 years after the Battle of Yavin, all told in the events of Disney+’s hit series The Mandalorian.
This is evident with the way LEGO opted to design the Mandalorian Battle Pack (75267) – their armors are highly customized and battle-worn reflecting the years of struggle that the Mandalorian tribe has endured at the hands of the Empire. If you are currently hooked at The Mandalorian series such as myself, then you’ll probably understand how things turned out to be for the galaxy’s highly respected and feared warriors.
The varied color combination and details as seen in these minifigs are by far the best that I’ve seen among LEGO’s line of LEGO Star Wars Battle Packs, plus they all come with capes!
The LEGO Star Wars Mandalorian Battle Pack (75267) comes in at 102 pieces and is expected to retail for $14.99 USD when they arrive in stores after Christmas on December 26.
So what do you think about this latest LEGO Star Wars Battle Pack? Are you impressed with how this set turned out? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
After the reveal of the first LEGO Marvel set to be released in 2020 in the form of the Avengers Hulk Helicopter Rescue (76144), third-party online retailers are slowly pulling the veil off the rest of the sets in this first wave of LEGO Marvel Avengers and Spider-Man 2020 sets. As reported by Promobricks, we can now see that LEGO has added several sets under this theme that seems to be a little bit off tangent as compared to the previous LEGO Avengers: Endgame sets. And since LEGO does not really keep a good track record of making their sets movie-accurate, its a bit hard to tell if these new-for-2020 sets are actually related to the MCU films.
To be completely honest, these new LEGO Marvel Avengers and Spider-Man 2020 sets maybe sort of underwhelming, except for some of the new minifigures that are offered with them. I bet that most LEGO minifig enthusiasts will be looking forward to that new Thanos minifigure, as well as for those new Spider-Girl Anya Corazon and Spider-Man Noire minifigs. And also from the looks of it, LEGO has thrown in two “4+” sets in this theme, which quite frankly is a bit expensive if I will base it from the Euro pricing as reported.
These images are still not the best ones out there but expect this post to be updated as soon as more crisp, official images are released by LEGO. Promobricks further mentions that these sets will be released sometime in February, but let’s see if these will be a part of LEGO’s January 2020 releases.
After their successful (and very colorful) debut this week, LEGO Shop@Home has updated their databases to now include more set images and official product descriptions of 2020’s LEGO Trolls World Tour sets, slated to arrive in stores on January 1st.
These new LEGO tie-in sets based on Dreamworks’ upcoming Trolls: World Tour sequel consists of seven new sets, with two being “4+” sets intended for younger, budding LEGO builders. These sets also feature an excellent array of minifigure characters based on the many vividly colored and musically inclined trolls, together with new LEGO elements that you might find interesting. New LEGO Disney sets were also revealed by third-party retailers that introduces a new collection of minidolls that are quite different from what LEGO has released before. These notable ‘microdolls’ are included in LEGO’s new line of LEGO Disney Princess Storybook collection alongside other newsets that will arrive in January next year. These new offerings include one 4+ set and five regular sets intended for kids 5 years and above.
Similar to the LEGO Ideas Pop-Up Book (21315), these new LEGO Disney Princess Storybook sets features buildable scenes from some of the Disney classic films that can be neatly tucked in or folded like a typical book. And perhaps to make this play feature possible, LEGO opted to modify its current version of existing minidolls and give it a new twist. These ‘microdolls’ are obviously shorter in height and come with larger eye prints.
Read on and check out for more images of these new LEGO Disney Princess Storybook sets, together with other regular sets that will be released come January 1st. I’ve also included their expected retail price in Euros and will update this post once more info comes in.
