LEGO Ideas Official Set #37: Fender Stratocaster (21329) Revealed

Earlier this week another crop of product ideas were finalized for the latest LEGO Ideas Review Stage. Not long after, the attention shifted from product hopefuls to the latest official release. The 37th in order of production, here is the LEGO Ideas Fender Stratocaster (21329). Created by Ideas member Tomas Letenay from Slovakia, this set passed the 2020 First Review Stage in September that year. After several months of finalization, the product is finally listed on LEGO Shop@Home, awaiting an October 1 release. In splendid design ingenuity, 1,074 pieces assemble to create a replica of one of the most famous electric guitars. Take a look.

Just as impressive as the LEGO elements that go into this Ideas build, are the non-brick extras. The Fender Stratocaster set (21329) comes with a brick-pattern fabric strap to go with the guitar. The guitar strings are sturdy threads. There’s also a bonus sticker of the Fender logo LEGO-ized, great to stick on anywhere. Don’t try it on the completed set though; it’s too small.

LEGO Ideas 2021 Second Review Stage Ends with 34 Submissions for Review

With LEGO Ideas being a well-established venue for aspiring brick-builders to shoot for designing an official set, the number of submissions to the platform has only increased in recent years. In this Second 2021 Review Stage alone, 34 proposals passed the qualifying period before it ended this September 6. We had the sublime pleasure of featuring some of these winners of 10-K support for review. As expected, the batch is another blend of brilliant original creations and licensed-IP homages. Without further ado, let’s enumerate these hopefuls:

  1. Imperial Island Fort
  2. Movie Set

There was one new LEGO Ideas proposal that recent received 10,000 supporters. That would be Ralf Ranghaal’s impressive Land Ahoy. It’s a brick-built age-of-exploration map of an island, with 3D terrain, model ship and compass rose. The design is also capable of being rolled up partway, like a real map on parchment.

This submission missed the 2021 Second Review Stage and will be the first on the Third Stage instead. It’ll be interesting to see which of these mind-blowing proposals on Second Stage will get the final approval.

LEGO Ideas Sonic Mania – Green Hill Zone Set Rumored to Come Out Next Year, with Some Changes

Just because a LEGO Ideas proposal got 10,000 supporters and passed a review stage for production, it doesn’t mean we will be seeing the fruits of that labor soon. LEGO Ideas member toastergrl first proposed her “Sonic the Hedgehog” set in early 2019. It gained 10-K support a year later and went into review. Then this February 2021 LEGO approved it as a new Ideas set. It’s now September 2021 and “Sonic Mania: Green Hill Zone” hasn’t made any further news. When is it coming out then? For now we only have some rumors according to The Brick Fan.

Details about the LEGO Ideas set themed after videogame icon “Sonic the Hedgehog” surfaced in Europe recently. First is the set name, 21331. Next is the possible retail price of 69.99 Euros, or $83.08 in exact conversion. Third is the expected release date, or dates. LEGO Ideas Sonic Mania – Green Hill Zone (21331) will be released either January 1, 2022 or in April. If both dates are valid then the New Year’s Day availability could be for the LEGO VIPs.

As for the set itself, the LEGO Ideas team may have made some alterations to toastergrl’s original design. That is their prerogative when turning an approved proposal into an official set. Apparently they’ve increased the scale of the environment but at the same time made things more “linear.” One feature of the original build was the versatility in connecting the environment pieces. How this will be translated into something linear has yet to be revealed. That is of course if these rumors hold true. Sonic ought to still remain a minifigure while Dr. Robotnik/Eggman and hench-bot Crabmeat are still brick-built. We really could use official word from LEGO about this. Chalk this one up for another speculation to verify later on.

Win the Hottest LEGO Harry Potter 20th Anniversary Sets on this Latest LEGO Ideas Contest

If the release of some magnificent LEGO sets like Hogwarts Icons – Collector’s Edition (76391) hadn’t clued you in, LEGO is currently celebrating 20 years of the LEGO Harry Potter line. And what better way to spread the joy than for LEGO to give some of their latest HP sets away? But this is not without some effort, of course. LEGO Ideas has launched a contest accepting all Potter-Brick-heads looking to dazzle the Brick Wizarding World. For the 20th Anniversary of LEGO Harry Potter, what magical build can you offer to win five related sets including Hogwarts Icons – Collector’s Edition (76391)?

LEGO Harry Potter Hogwarts Icons-Collectors' Edition

As one can gather from the contest details page in LEGO Ideas, the objective is a LEGO Harry Potter MOC. It has to be, according to the contest people, a “magnificent magical creative” build. And as an additional thematic challenge, the build must have the number “20” displayed somewhere. 20 years of LEGO HP and we mustn’t forget. Ideas members looking to participate can present a physical build or one designed via digital tools (eg. LEGO Brick Designer). Only five photos from multiple angles and focused on details and features are needed. For best resolution the shortest edge has to be 1080 pixels at minimum.

This LEGO Harry Potter 20th Anniversary contest is already running now until October 6. The Grand Prize winner gets these:

legacy

  1. Hogwarts™: Polyjuice Potion Mistake (76386)
  2. Hogwarts™: Fluffy Encounter (76387)
  3. Hogwarts™ Chamber of Secrets (76389)
  4. Hogwarts™ Icons – Collectors’ Edition (76391)
  5. Fawkes, Dumbledore’s Phoenix (76394)

Two runners-up will win the following:

legacy2

  1. Hogwarts™ Icons – Collectors’ Edition (76391)
  2. Limited Edition Minifigures (now numbered 6232944)

So either way, winner or runner-up will receive a guaranteed LEGO Harry Potter Hogwarts Icons – Collector’s Edition (76391) set. Given delivery delays in North America (mollified only by LEGO Shop@Home US already accepting pre-orders), this might be a more fun way to get this beauty.

Please refer to the contest page for further details and judging criteria. A winner (and the runners-up) will be chosen by on October 21, and officially announced on the 28th.

HenkvdL05’s A-Team Van is His Second LEGO Ideas Proposal to Get 10-K Support on 2021 Second Review Stage

We can’t help but feel concerned about the titanic workload the review crew for LEGO Ideas 2021 Second Review Stage. Their most recent proposal that reached 10-K support was at the start of this week. Now we have another one before the week is out (even if this is September and that was August).

This new passer also reinforces a prevailing sense of nostalgia, featuring famous vehicles from 1980s media. There’s Scooby-Doo and the gang with their van, and Michael Knight’s talking super-car alongside their support truck. The latter’s creator HenkvdL05 pulls a hat trick regarding that theme with yet another 10-K submission.

HenkvdL05ATeam02

Talk about famous vehicles from 1980s pop media and it’d be a crime to skip “The A-Team.” Sure, the titular crazy-awesome bunch of fugitive ex-soldiers-turned-mercenaries used a nondescript black GMC van with red trim. But what a beauty that rolling arsenal was all the same. HenkvdL05 pointedly designed his build in this proposal around LEGO’s recent (since 2020) 8-stud vehicle width standard. That means this A-Team Van is scaled to standard-sized minifigures. There’s still enough inside room for the minifigs to sit side-by-side in twos. That was pretty much the setup with the A-Team whenever they rolled out.

HenkvdL05ATeam03

Of course the main cast of the show isn’t skipping out from their own LEGO Ideas proposal. There’s “Hannibal” Smith, “Faceman” Peck, Mad Murdock and BA Baracus, with appropriate props to boot. They can jump right into the van, which has an easily removable roof for play purposes. The vehicle itself has working doors: driver and passenger, rear, and sliding side-door. Its interior also includes communication and electronic-equipment LEGO pieces to make things lively.

HenkvdL05 now has two proposals aimed at getting a LEGO Ideas set for the 2021 Second Review Stage. And in total, there are over 30 for the reviewers to look over. We can’t help but wonder how many of these proposals will become official at the end of this period.

New LEGO Ideas Activity Challenge: “The Love of Gaming!”

LEGO Ideas has long encouraged builders to send their best creations in hopes of seeing them become official sets. But it’s not really always serious business in their platform. The members get to have fun too, thanks to LEGO Ideas Activities. In these activities, the Ideas website issues challenges for member-builders to make. Selected winners get no prizes beyond seeing their builds featured and shown off in the Ideas page. There’s usually a lot of ongoing Ideas Activities, but this latest one is quite interesting. This new challenge is for the LEGO builder who is also a certified videogame fan.

Brick Fanatics has it that LEGO Ideas’ new Activity challenge was put up as of August 30. The theme for this activity is “The Love of Gaming!” Apparently this comes ahead of September 12, the usually agreed-upon date for National Video Games Day in the US. The theme sounds like a doozy for LEGO builder-slash-gamers, right? Not so fast, though. Interested Ideas members better read the rules first. What’s this? We can’t depict licensed IPs in the build? But what about LEGO Super Mario? Or LEGO Overwatch? LEGO Minecraft, perhaps? Doesn’t this rule defeat the point of the Activity theme?

legacy

Not at all; it ties in with the positive message of National Video Games Day. It’s not about what we love to play, but the love of playing videogames itself. So the sample items LEGO Ideas gives for the challenge make sense: a game controller, a console, maybe a classic arcade cab? If you’ve frequented The Brick Show Shop, you know what we and the Ideas crew are getting at.

This LEGO Ideas Activity will run until Tuesday next week, September 7, 2021 at 4AM EST. As of the writing of this piece, there have been no entries yet in “The Love of Gaming!” challenge. But it shouldn’t be long before we see something there. These neat images from an Ideas proposal and the internet should make do for illustration.

10-K Support Reached for LEGO Ideas Proposal “House of Time” by Kevin Feeser

Announcing the triumph of another set proposal becoming an official LEGO Ideas product never gets old. It is even better when the new 10-K support-hitter hails from a repeat successful contributor builder. LEGO Ideas member Kevin Feeser hit it out of the park with his Tree House (21318) set, released 2019. His latest (and second total) proposal on the Ideas site is a brick-built old-fashioned cuckoo clock. He calls it the House of Time. His current online moniker, KevinTimeHouse even reflects it. Submitted in November 2020, House of Time made the magic 10,000-support milestone and is now under review, as Brick Fanatics tells us.

Just looking at the set on LEGO Ideas, one gets why Kevin’s House of Time is a sure 10-K magnet. His earlier Tree House (21318) showed build complexity in terms of mind-boggling detail. House of Time, while just as detailed, demonstrates complexity in terms of brick mechanics. As we already said, the set looks like an antique cuckoo clock. You know what that means: a moving clock face, pendulum, and a cuckoo sounding the hours. House of Time goes the extra mile by featuring a moving model train on a track, all moved by gears driven by LEGO Power Functions.

House of Time is a hybrid set of sorts. Its 2,800 or so parts composed of traditional LEGO bricks and LEGO Technic pieces for its internal mechanics. Between this and Tree House (21318), Kevin Feeser has a 100% batting average when it comes to 10-K support. It probably helps that he only has two submissions total on the LEGO Ideas website. Now it’s up to his new proposal to pass review by the Ideas crew. Considering how many other projects have made the Second 2021 Review Stage, this is going right down the line.

As a preview, other proposals in the current LEGO Ideas Review Stage include Minas Tirith, KITT and the FLAG Command Truck from “Knight Rider,” a Gamestop Classic Shop, the Orca and Great White Shark from “Jaws,” “Scooby Doo” Mystery Machine, the Eagle 5 Winnebago starship from “Spaceballs,” and so much more; like 32 proposals all in all. Here’s wishing the best of luck to KevinTimeHouse.

LEGO Ideas Sailboat Adventure (40487) Now Up As A Gift-With-Purchase Set

Just in case you missed it, the August 2021 LEGO Store Calendar has been released, giving us a closer look at this month’s uber-exclusive gift-with-purchase (GWP) set in the form of the LEGO Ideas Sailboat Adventure (40487).

40487 1

If you recall, the Sailboat Adventure (40487) is the overall winner of the LEGO Ideas Build That Holiday contest from last year giving it the privilege of becoming the next fan-inspired promotional set following the likes of the LEGO Ideas Vintage Car (40448) and the still to be revealed LEGO Ideas The Adventures of the USS Cardboard. Designed by LEGO fan builder Yan Chevalier (aka yc_solo over at LEGO Ideas), this LEGO Ideas GWP set clocks in at 330 pieces and will be yours for free once your single-receipt LEGO purchase reaches $200 or more. I have to say that the set comes with a hefty price point, but considering how substantially large this is at more than 300 pieces, plus the figures that go with it, I guess it still has great value for money.

40487 alt1 40487 alt2

The LEGO Ideas Sailboat Adventure (40487) is available for an early release for LEGO VIPs from August 1 to 3, and general availability to all (while stocks last of course) from August 4 to 29.  Just in case you got yours already, be kind to share your general impressions of this set in the comments section below.

The LEGO Ideas Dream Holiday Sailboat (40487) Will Be The Next LEGO Gift-With-Purchase Set

If you recall from last year, LEGO Ideas launched a building contest dubbed as Build That Holiday. The contest centers on recreating your dream summer holiday vacation using only a limited number of bricks, ranging only from 150 to 250 LEGO pieces. As a fan vote contest, the entry with the highest number of LEGO fan votes was eventually selected to become the next LEGO GWP or gift-with-purchase set. And this time, we have confirmation that this GWP will be finally offered next month in the form of the LEGO Ideas Dream Holiday Sailboat (40487).

LEGO Ideas Dream Holiday Sailboat
Fan-based concept, not yet the final gift-with-purchase set.

According to Promobricks, the LEGO Ideas Dream Holiday Sailboat (40487) GWP will most likely be offered to LEGO VIPs starting August 1, and August 4 for everyone else. This promotional item will be added to your LEGO shopping cart automatically when you reach a single receipt, 200€  price point. I have to admit that it’s on a quite high qualifying purchase range, but we have to wait and see for the August 2021 LEGO Store Calendar to have a full grasp of the promo.

The LEGO Ideas Dream Holiday Sailboat (40487) is based on the winning entry, Sailing Ship Adventure by yc_solo. With a total of 887 fan votes over at the LEGO Ideas platform, it has been voted to become the next GWP set similar to what the fan-based platform did with other promotional sets such as the LEGO Ideas Vintage Car (40448) and the upcoming, LEGO Ideas The Adventures of the USS Cardboard.  As a fan of LEGO brick-built vignettes, I’m certainly looking forward to these sets. I just hope that LEGO will offer these promotional sets at somewhat lower qualifying purchase price points. I guess we just have to wait and see.

LEGO Ideas Seinfeld (21328) Early VIP Access Now Up
