LEGO Opens Duplo Brick Names Personalized Set Ordering Service for US Customers.

The LEGO Group has always prided itself on being one of the most enjoyable and educational toy manufacturers around. Being educational, they also go to extra mile by covering as many play ages for children as possible, with proof being their Duplo product line.

LEGO Duplo bricks have been a particularly popular toy series for little tykes easing out of infancy until they start preschool. While Duplo has its own number of sub-themes including licensed properties like British franchises “Thomas the Tank Engine” or “Bob the Builder,” LEGO is looking to expand their line with a custom product ordering service.

logan

This is the advent of LEGO Duplo Brick Names, an online service wherein customers, in particular parents with very young children aged 1½ to 5 years old, can order a custom set of bricks in two different colors that, when assembled, will spell out their child’s name.

Upon visiting the Brick Names website, customers can enter a name to be converted into a personalized Duplo set, followed by a choice of whichever two colors they want the bricks to be. The service is a collaborative effort by LEGO, Duplo and BuzzFeed Product Labs, and has the makings of a hit.

A sample Brick Names Duplo set would be several blocks in two colors that can be put together. Let’s say the child’s name is “Logan.” The bricks with one color can combine to form the letters L, O, G, A and N while bricks of second color can fill out the holes and spaces of the letters (the hole in O and A, and to emphasize the open areas in L, G and N. They certainly would look great on a shelf in a toddler’s nursery for instance.

For now, the LEGO Duplo Brick Names service is only available in the US, but customers availing of it on the official website can have their personalized set delivered to their doorstep in a few days.

Strike Fear (and Fun) On The Hearts of Pirates With This LEGO POTC Dead Men Tell No Tales Mini Silent Mary MOC!

Who says only minifigure pirates can have fun on the high seas? The pride of the Spanish Royal Navy is not the kind to shrink down on any type of challenge – even in a micro-build form! Tyler is back once more for another fun and creative build which will strike fear – or should I say fun – in the hearts of the haughtiest pirate. We saw it first as an official LEGO set when the LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean Silent Mary (71042) was unveiled during this year New York Toy Fair, and this time you can add it to your growing roster of custom microbuilds thanks to Tyler.

scaled silent mary mini lego

Based from the most recent POTC film, Dead Men Tell No Tales, this fun, little build is also a bit of a challenge for our Master Builder because of its odd shape and design, unlike the first ones that Tyler did for this series. As you may have seen from the film, this spectre of a ship has been notably lacking in terms of its hull so it’s kind of clever of Tyler to add those clear, round brick pieces to stabilize and make the ship look elevated. The tooth and clip pieces were very helpful to recreate the broken and ghostly, rib cage-like hull of the Silent Mary. It also helps to convey that rotted-out look on Captain Salazar’s phantom ship.

Silent Mary 3

Like we see in the film, Tyler opted to have a play feature added to this Silent Mary microbuild by attaching a hinge on the front portion of the ship that lifts up as it swallows other ships along its path.

Silent Mary 4

On the other side, you’ll also see another play feature where the ship’s mast can be lowered as if it is dangling over the water like the ghostly, dilapidated ship that it is. Tyler also added some cannons on each side using those handy, minifigure binocular pieces to replicate the ship’s armaments. It’s kind of cool of how it turned out actually.

Silent Mary 5 Silent Mary 6

Another fun challenge in building this MOC is how Tyler managed to recreate the Silent Mary’s sails. Unlike the ones before it where Tyler used those curved slope pieces to re-enact the sails, this time, he opted to use several tooth/plate pieces to make it look like the tattered, torn sails which we saw in the movie. Tyler also added a bit of motion in these sails by having it dangling on several clips.

Silent Mary 7

And of course, Captain Salazar can fit nicely in the back, sitting in command of his ghostly, fun ship.

Silent Mary 8

Here’s Tyler once again with this nice, little build.

If you like Tyler’s minibuild rendition of the Silent Mary and would like to create your own chibi-sized POTC set, be sure to drop by at BuildBetterBricks.com to check out its building instructions. Go Mini in The High Seas With These Custom LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean Queen Anne’s Revenge Microbuild!

It’s a nice Sunday afternoon to conquer that sea of bricks that you have lying around, and what better way to do that than to try this next wave of LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean MOCs from our Master Builder Tyler! We saw the swashbuckling, chibi sized Black Pearl and Flying Dutchman MOCs conquer the high seas, and this time around another of Tyler’s creations enter the fray.

First off, we have another ship straight from 2011’s Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and at the helm of it is the fearsome pirate, the infamous Blackbeard (well, at least in the film and not in this pretty neat MOC). The original Queen Anne’s Revenge may look frighteningly scary, but this next microbuild from Tyler playfully takes away all of that – I say that even the minifigure version of Blackbeard will have a blast riding on this one.

LEGO actually turned this intimidating ship into an official set when it introduced the LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides Queen Anne’s Revenge (4195) back in 2011. Coming in at 1,094 this now retired D2C (direct-to-consumer) set is sort of the capstone of the subtheme. Following the tradition of LEGO’s microbuilds, Tyler now presents us a more fun and playable alternative to this larger version.

scaled Queen Anne Square Image 1024x1024 e1509915015405

This next mini-pirate ship is probably the coolest ship of all in the film’s series, especially with all of its red, intimidating sails proudly sailing. That sort of grandness of the Queen Anne’s Revenge was captured by Tyler in cute, LEGO form. He even managed to use several gold LEGO pieces to imitate the colors that adorn the sides and front of the ship.

Image 2

Similar to his previous POTC microbuild techniques, Tyler recreated the sails using several mudguard pieces to give it that curved natural look. These curved slopes are perfect for these creations and seem to be designed specifically for this purpose.

Image 3

And of course, Blackbeard’s minifigure fits nicely into this mini Queen Anne’s Revenge as it sails towards its next conquest.

Here’s Tyler with more on this fun build.

December LEGO Store Calendar Gives Us A Glimpse on Some of The Most Exciting Sets of 2018.

The last LEGO Store Calendar of the year is now officially out in the US. Though LEGO has its usual freebies lined up for the month, I have to say that I am not really looking forward to them except probably for the re-run of the LEGO Creator Mini London Bus (40220) offered from December 8-17, and the highlight of December’s promotionals which is the commemorative LEGO Star Wars Darth Vader Anniversary Pod (5005376). There’s also another round of Double VIP points from December 8-10 so that is something to look forward to as well.

However, there is still another reason to be excited about all things LEGO – and you don’t even have to wait until December. The second page of the December LEGO Store Calendar highlights some of the 2018 LEGO City, Creator, Ninjago and Technic sets that we featured a few days ago, and included in the calendar, quite unexpectedly, is one LEGO Nexo Knights set that is also slated to debut during the first half of next year. We had our first glimpse of Axl’s Rolling Arsenal (72006) from the recent issue of LEGO Life Magazine, and this time around, we get to see another LEGO Nexo Knights set together with a brief description of its play features. The LEGO Nexo Knights Berserker Bomber (72003) offers us a brief background on who or what the next evil baddies that our heroes will be faced with. On a personal note, I find next year’s line-up of LEGO Creator sets more appealing exciting. I’m looking forward to the Modular Skate House, together with the Quake Mech, and the Berserker Bomber. Check out these set descriptions below.

MCU’s Thor: Ragnarok Poster – in LEGO!

The god of thunder and his “Revengers” have finally arrived in cinemas! MCU’s Thor: Ragnarok is now showing in theaters, and to celebrate the film’s tie-up with LEGO, the latter released via social media a legolized version of the film’s most recent poster. It’s a complete remake of the Hulk, Hela, Thor, Loki and Valkyrie in their minifigure forms. I placed these posters here, side by side, so you can appreciate all of its quirky, LEGO humor.

LEGO Thor Ragnarok Thor Ragnarok

LEGO has gone all out in its promotions of Thor: Ragnarok, beginning with two particular LEGO sets dedicated to the film – The Ultimate Battle for Asgard (76084) and Thor VS Hulk: Arena Clash (76088). TT Games and Warner Bros. Interactive also came up with a pretty neat video game trailer of LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2 that renders some of the most notable scenes in the film in LEGO bricks and minifigs. As it seems, MCU and LEGO fans will get to relive scenes from Thor: Ragnarok once the game rolls-out on November 14. In case you missed it, here’s the trailer once more.

Have you seen Thor: Ragnarok already? What do you think about this latest MCU film? Let us know in the comments below.

Italian Student Builds Magnificent LEGO Scale Model of the Duomo Cathedral in Florence, Italy.

In this day and age, one of the best media expressions of architecture has come in the form of scale versions of structures built using the very ubiquitous LEGO blocks. There have been countless stories about famous buildings and monuments being given the replica treatment.

The most recent build of note is in Italy, where a high school student and avid LEGO builder decided to realize his vision of the Duomo, also known as the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence. The result is an astoundingly accurate rendition that, for a time, will be a local tourist attraction.

Giancinto Consiglio, a 17-year-old student from Italy’s Puglia region, was inspired to do a LEGO scale model of the Duomo cathedral following a tour of Florence, the capital of Tuscany region.

duomolego2

Impressed by the majesty of the 11th-Century cathedral building and the adjoining baptistery, Consiglio would use a CAD program on his home computer to generate a 3D model of the structures, and concluded that, to translate the CGI into a real model, he would need a total of 20,000 LEGO bricks, in 400 various shapes and ten different colors.

duomolego4

Once preparations were complete, Consiglio would return to Florence to construct the LEGO model of the Duomo, working inside the nearby Grand Museum. His attempt was promoted by museum staff as a special event, the work made open for viewing by visitors.

duomolego

The budding Master Builder was helped by members from various AFOL groups such as Toscana Bricks, the Italian LEGO Users Group (ITLUG), and many interested builders from the area.

duomolego5

Ultimately the scale LEGO Duomo, standing 150 cm x 60 cm x 65 cm, was finished in one day. It will stay in the Grand Museum as a special free-view exhibit until November 9, when it will be moved to the Bricks in Florence Festival the following November 11 to 12.

Latest LEGO Life Magazine Shows Off the New Nexo Knights Axl’s Rolling Arsenal (72006).

One of the new themes that LEGO introduced last year was the rather quirky Nexo Knights line, which depicted a blend of medieval aesthetics and futuristic technology (sort of LEGO’s attempt to create a Castle and Space theme). The adventures of a band of knights guided by a digital wizard defending the kingdom of Knighton against Jestro and the Book of Monsters Monstrox have also been chronicled in a 3D animated series that has been running on the Cartoon Network for four seasons.

I guess most AFOLs will not agree, but the theme’s sets, with its vehicles and unique minifigures, are pretty cool themselves. Though earlier this year, rumors have it that LEGO will be pulling down the curtain on our heroes from Knighton, the news of additional Nexo Knights sets for 2018 gives a bit of a hope for those who love the theme.

Thanks to a Brickset report, we now have a glimpse of one of 2018’s LEGO Nexo Knights sets slated to hit stores in the first half of the year.  Brickset has also shared an image of the latest issue of the LEGO Life Magazine that shows a single-page spread of what appears to be Axl’s Rolling Arsenal (72006). The image suggests that the set will be including two vehicles: Axl’s Rolling Arsenal itself, and a flying machine aptly called the Vyro Glider.

nk

Axl in the show already had two vehicles and two LEGO sets under his name – the Tower Carrier Truck (70322) and the Rumble Maker (70354) drill tank, and now it looks like he will be getting his third one, with the Rolling Arsenal (72006). This set appears to be a carrier tank with a detachable flying component called the Jestroyer, and an internally-stored buggy called the Critter Trapper.

The Critter Trapper’s name is rather meaningful, as the enemy aircraft shown on the LEGO Life Magazine page is called a Vyro Glider, piloted by a new baddie called a Cyberbyter, and likely one of the villains in the upcoming season 5 of the animated series which features an evil computer virus. The fact that the Vyro Glider shoots mech-spiderlike projectiles called Tech Critters lends credence to that little show theory.

Getting the LEGO Nexo Knights Rolling Arsenal seems to be a fine way to pass the time, while waiting for the fifth season of the animated series to premiere on Cartoon Network. There’s no further information on these LEGO sets beyond the magazine page, so we’ll have to wait for further info to come up.

LEGO Seasonal Nutcracker (40254) Available as a Brick Friday Promo.

There’s just no end to the sheer number of promos that LEGO is hyping up for everyone as the year comes to a close. Seasonal sets are coming out once again with the holidays just around the corner, and some of these are really out to make an early start of things.

For instance, after Thanksgiving late this November, LEGO is turning Black Friday into Brick Friday with the seasonal release of the LEGO Nutcracker statue (40254). It is the company’s beautiful take on the traditional Christmas ornamentation, and LEGO buyers can have it in two ways.

40254 alt1 40254 140254 alt1

The 230-piece LEGO Nutcracker set comes free to any LEGO shoppers with a minimum purchase of $99 from November 24 to 27. However, LEGO VIP members, will be entitled to a special, earlier two-day promo period from November 18 to 19, a whole week before the regular one.40254

The LEGO Nutcracker set seems to be larger than it looks and definitely looks great on a mantelpiece or cabinet to spread some Yuletide cheers. Its classic, subtle details are testament to LEGO’s classical appreciation.

For those who are familiar with the “Nutcracker” ballet, they’d recognize the mechanical basics of the LEGO Nutcracker real fast. The main nut-cracking action is in the chest cavity, with a crushing jaw on the chest manipulated by a lever at the back.40254 alt3

Be warned though – much like decorative nutcrackers made after the mid-20th Century, the mechanism is just for show because LEGO bricks are not tough enough to crunch real nuts. Oh well, it’s still a beautifully designed seasonal set that can easily be taken apart and stored once the holidays are over.

LEGO Ideas Women of NASA (21312) Tagged as Best-Selling Toy By Amazon.

If you’ve been keeping up with LEGO set news, then you know that the newest set in the Ideas lineup, featuring Women of NASA, was released at the beginning of this month. You also know that it depicts two real-life female NASA astronauts, an astronomer and a software engineer, along with representations of their work, from program manuals to scale models of the Hubble Space Telescope and the space shuttle.

What is only known just now is that this LEGO Ideas set, conceived as an inspiration for girls to become interested in STEM careers, is now the newest best-selling toy in just 24 hours as cited by CNN.

21312

Proof of the Women of NASA set’s popularity was easily found at the LEGO Store in Manhattan’s Flatiron District, where Maia Weinstock, MIT News science writer and major LEGO fan-girl, was present to autograph boxes of Ideas set 21312 as they were sold in October 28.

legoweinstock
LEGO Ideas fan designer Maia Weinstock at the Flatiron District LEGO Store during the launch of the LEGO Ideas Women of NASA (21312).

Everybody, from parents wanting Women of NASA for their daughters, to older women wishing that the set existed during their childhoods, were extremely appreciative of Weinstock’s brainchild and told her so. Lines for the Flatiron LEGO Store actually went round the block, and customers worried that the stock for 21312 would run out before they could reach the counter.

Social media was also very abuzz at the selling power of Women of NASA, as well as very appreciative of this theme to empower and inspire women’s interest in STEM fields. Customers proudly posted their packages as they got them, and science agencies like the Smithsonian were full of praise.

At only $24.99, LEGO Ideas 21312 is the number one toy on Amazon right now; they are also sold out over there. As of this posting, Women of NASA is still available at the LEGO Store website, but who knows how that might last. LEGO sure hit the jackpot with it.
