As we prep the stage – or in this, case our blogsite and YouTube channel – for the opening of the 2018 New York Toy Fair, we’re glad that Brick Show Brian is on the floor to give you live updates as they happen at LEGO’s Booth #1335 of the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center.
To kick start the occasion, LEGO has just released an official press statement detailing all the things that we can expect from them at this year’s grandest Toy Fair. As it turns out, based on their press release, it looks like LEGO will not be holding back from its original plan of revealing the summer line-up after all.
Let’s keep our fingers crossed as we wait and see if LEGO will pull the veil off from these exciting sets once the doors of the Javits Convention Center opens:
This is not an all inclusive list, and we bet that LEGO has more in store during the next four days of the NYTF. So be sure to stay tuned here at the Brick Show for live updates as they happen at this year’s Toy Fair!
Just in time before the gates of the New York Toy Fair opens on Saturday, LEGO has opted to reveal the full line-up of cast for its LEGO Powerpuff Girls sets. Yesterday, we had an official word from LEGO about the rumored return of the girls in minifigure forms. Frankly, this doesn’t come as a surprise since we already saw how the superpowered girls from Townsville looked like as part of the now discontinued LEGO Dimensions sets. What comes as a nice surprise is the inclusion of what most of us have been waiting for: the most adorable evil primate of all: Mojo Jojo!
First revealed by The Geekiary, these minifigures of Buttercup, Bubbles, and Blossom along with Princess Morbucks, the stuff toy Octi, Donny the Unicorn and of course, Mojo Jojo, are all part of two LEGO Powerpuff Girls sets scheduled to be released also in August.
The LEGO® Group will issue two new and exciting building sets featuring Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup allowing children, and fans of all ages, to recreate the superheroes’ action-packed adventures.
The two sets being mentioned here are the Bubbles Playground Showdown (41287) which includes Bubbles, Princess Morbucks, and Octi; while the other one is the Mojo Jojo Strikes (41288) which obviously comes with the super genius monkey himself Mojo Jojo, Buttercup, Blossom and Donny the Unicorn. Let’s see if LEGO will also give us a glimpse of these sets at NYTF.
Coming in hot from their reveal of the Kessel Run Millennium Falcon (75212) this Valentine’s, LEGO has dropped another reveal to further sweeten our day. Now before we get too excited about this latest news, we should bear in mind that there is not much of a difference with regards to how these minifigures look like as compared to their first debut as part of the last wave of LEGO Dimensions sets. If you recall, we also featured a video where Brian gave us some interesting details on how the upcoming LEGO Powerpuff Girls will look like, describing in detail these sets’ features and the minifigures included in them. However, earlier today, LEGO has finally broken its months-long silence, and finally gave us its first official confirmation of the girls having their own LEGO theme.
The news was shared via LEGO’s Twitter account, announcing the arrival of LEGO Powerpuff Girls sets in August. These sets are rumored to be the LEGO Powerpuff Girls Bubbles’ Playground Showdown (41287) and Mojo Jojo Strikes (41288). Hopefully, now that we’re just a couple of days away from this weekend’s New York Toy Fair, we’ll get to see how these sets will actually look like, but for now this is what LEGO opted to share.
The LEGO Powerpuff Girls sets will be available beginning August. Set 41287 is said to feature the minifigures of Bubbles, Princess Morbucks, and Octi, while set 41288 will feature everyone’s favorite primate baddie, Mojo Jojo, Blossom, Buttercup, and a brick-built version of the Donny the Unicorn from the new series.
Since last year, it seems that the fate of our heroes from Knighton has been hanging by the thread, particularly when the newsof the apparent cancellation of the LEGO Nexo Knights theme has been reported by Blocks Magazine. Truth be told, there have been times that the theme seemed to have rebounded, with even two consecutive waves of new sets released since then. It was somehow rather sketchy if the news really has some weight on it, or were just another rumor that has to be dismissed.
However, it looks like that the Nexo Knights’ fate is now finally set in stone, when LEGO announced the end of the line for this three-year-old theme during the on-going 2018 Nuremberg Toy Fair. Zusammengebaut is on Nuremberg right now covering all the events that are happening inside the LEGO Booth and reports that the LEGO Nexo Knights theme will no longer continue beyond the six sets that we currently have. Furthermore, there will be no more product development beyond this line, which means LEGO has completely closed the curtain for this short-lived theme, and will now divert its resources and talents to other projects.
Fan reception towards Nexo Knights was a bit mixed so to speak. The younger generation of LEGO fans completely fell in love with the theme, which was made more appealing with the introduction of the Nexo Knights mobile in-app game. It’s like introducing a new way of playing with LEGO sets when children or adults for that matter, can scan the shield pieces that come with the official LEGO sets using the said mobile gaming app.
Unfortunately, the reception for the actual LEGO Nexo Knights sets was not that all positive, with some even pointing out that LEGO seems to be trying hard to create a Castle and Space hybrid theme. Of course, Nexo Knights also managed to have a following during its short-lived run, but at the end of the day, it will always be a numbers game for the LEGO Group, living with the harsh reality that the theme simply did not sell well with the general public.
As I said before, it’s always kind of sad to see an endeared LEGO theme fade away, but we can be assured of the fact that LEGO is about, and will always be, expressing your creativity with whatever pieces you are dealt with. In case you haven’t picked up the latest LEGO Nexo Knights sets, then don’t worry since they are still up, both in-store and online at shop.LEGO.com. Now that Netflix’s hit retro sci-fi series, Stranger Things is officially confirmed for a third season run, fans are now excited about how things will turn out in the quiet town of Hawkins, well on the surface that is. Most of us who binged watch all over Season 2 knows for a fact that there are more than meets the eye in Season 2 finale’s episode. The ominous image of the still yet to be named monstrous creature looming over at the Upside Down town of Hawkins is enough for any fan to get hooked and wait excitedly on what the Duffer Brothers will cook up next.
Stranger Things Season 3 is still far off, expected to be back to Netflix sometime towards the end of 2018 or during the early part of 2019. So while waiting, we still have plenty of time to soak in all 17 episodes of the series or, if you’re an avid AFOL and would like to give it a fancy twist, then LEGO stop motion studio Book Shelf Productions has fairly summarized Stranger Things’ Season 2 in a pretty neat 5 minute video – of course, in LEGO bricks. They even have their own version of the streaming giant with their own Netbrix (yeah, right nice one). Check out the video below.
The studio’s stop motion video features some of the most memorable moments in Season 2. We see the kids getting the LEGO treatment in their Halloween Ghostbusters costumes and even up to that climactic moment where we saw Eleven’s awe inspiring powers as she closes the Gate between the Upside Down and the world above. Of course, everything seems to be idyllic when Mike and Eleven finally revealed their mutual feelings during the annual Snow Ball school dance. Needless to say, there is still a lot to expect from Stranger Things’ Season 3 and we can’t just wait to see how things will turn out.
For AFOLs such as myself who are hooked into this 80s inspired sci-fi series, having a piece of Hawkins in LEGO form is one satisfying accomplishment. If you recall, Tyler came up with brick-built version of the Byer’s House from Season 1, together with a cleverly done Demigorgon minifigure which you can easily recreate using the building instructions that you can get from Build Better Bricks. If you’re a LEGO Stranger Things fans such as myself, be sure to check this out and see you once again in the Upside Down.
Toys are a concept that will never go out of style and toy brands, especially the major long-runners that have been around for years or decades, will always be in the hearts of many grown-ups. This has been the concept of The Toys that Made Us, a miniseries on Netflix.
Created by Brian Volk-Weiss, the documentary show presents in-depth histories of some of the most iconic toy brands and lines in recent (20th Century) history. Running eight episodes total, The Toys That Made Us has already put the first four on Netflix, featuring Star Wars, He-Man, Barbie and G.I. Joe.
While a specific date for the availability of episodes 5-8 of The Toys That Made Us is yet to be announced, what is known is that the latter four documentaries will focus on LEGO, Transformers, Hello Kitty, and Star Trek. Yep, LEGO might be on for the show’s episode 5.
According to the streaming series’ official Facebook page, viewers might have to wait until about four months before The Toys That Made Us resumes with the remaining episodes. Some of the preview photos for the LEGO episode have been noted by The Brick Fan to be apparently taken from Bricks LA.
No further information about what other information or locations will be touched upon in the LEGO episode of The Toys That Made Us, but the possibility of a visit to LEGO HQ in Billund, Denmark or even one of the LEGOLAND Parks is not that remote. We’ll have to wait.
Fans of the LEGO Movie and its corresponding sets may be happy to know that our favorite feline (or unicorn) of positivity may soon have an entire series of LEGO sets under her name. The breakout star of 2014’s The LEGO Movie did gain a good deal of followers and some LEGO sets to her credit. She may not have received the same glamor treatment as that of Batman, with his very own moment on the big screen and a relatively huge number of LEGO sets under his belt, but LEGO did give her some separate screen time when Cartoon Network recently launched an animated series dedicated to Unikitty’s wacky adventures along with the rest of her zany new friends.
This time, it looks like Unikitty will not just have a CN cartoon series of her own, but a number of LEGO sets to go along with it as well. As it seems, this still yet-to-be confirmed LEGO theme has been disclosed from an unlikely source. Online book distributor BulkBookStore.com has listed an upcoming Scholastic Book title that gives an overview of what to expect from this latest LEGO-themed book, and I guess it has revealed more than what it meant to. Here’s a screenshot of the page from their website just in case…
Entitled as LEGO Unikitty’s Guide to Being Happy, the book is intended for children ages 6 to 8 and is slated to be released on October 30 retailing for $6.99. What is very interesting about this listing is the way Scholastic worded its overview, and to quote (emphasis mine):
A guide from LEGO(R) Unikitty(TM) herself! The breakout star from The LEGO Movie gets her very own Cartoon Network TV show and toy line from The LEGO Group beginning in 2018. The series follows Princess Unikitty — whose efforts to stay positive no matter what sometimes make her prone to the occasional “rage-out” — as she keeps busy with royal responsibilities. Unikitty is most interested in making sure everyone is happy and in ridding the kingdom of negativity. She often fights the bad vibes that come from her nemesis, Master Frown, a big ol’ jerk who lives in the next city over: Frowntown. Joined by a cast of wild characters, Unikitty and her friends make sure that every day is the happiest and most creative ever.
So, are you ready to vanquish all negativity in Unikitty Kingdom? Are you ready to take on the forces of evil and spread rainbows and sunshine? Are you ready to get happy? Then this is the guide for you!
Is Scholastic hinting on new a series of LEGO sets for Unikitty and her friends? Furthermore, if the book is expected to be released in October, is it possible that these new LEGO Unikitty sets will be a part of LEGO’s summer wave of releases? Sure, we already have the LEGO Movie sets that bear the sought after multicolored unicorn – 7 in fact – but none of these have placed Unikitty in the forefront except Cloud Cuckoo Palace (70803).
If indeed what scholastic has revealed is true, then we can expect a wave of similarly designed sets later on. It is also interesting to see how the characters from the TV series will eventually turn out as LEGO minifigures if indeed this happens. We haven’t received any official word yet from LEGO as of the moment, so until then, it will be wise to grab the shaker and take these things with a pinch of salt. We just have to keep our fingers crossed until then.
FYI: The banner image above is from the promotional exclusive Unikitty minifigure given away during the San Diego Comic Con 2014 just in case we get too hyped.
This was just out courtesy of BrickFanatics: It seems that LEGO has more great surprises in store for the summer of 2018. These come in some possible new sets for two of their product lineups, that of their Disney tie-ins as well as for the girls-oriented LEGO Friends label.
We’ve already done a coverage of the latest LEGO Friends sets coming out early next year, and those sets as well as the LEGO Disney ones are already available on shop.LEGO.com, and eventually, LEGO has some nifty follow-up ideas that will be making their debut several months later on in 2018.
The LEGO Disney additions for summer 2018 is fairly small, but quite in tune with the latest trends. Reportedly they are two sets based on Tangled: The Series, based on the ongoing Disney channel TV series spinoff of the 2010 animated film. The series is highly praised for its engaging storyline and typical Disney humor, as well as retaining its primary voice talents, Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi.
As for LEGO Friends, rumor has it that it will be receiving a subtheme of its own. There’s not a lot of info regarding that, other than it might involve certain elements of go-kart racing, with the all-girl Friends cast getting into the thick of fast-paced action on various cars and racing sets. In addition, certain other LEGO Friends sets will have life-sized accessories, such as a microphone shaped like a mobile phone.
All in all they sound like a lot of things to look out for when you’re a LEGO Disney or LEGO Friends collector. We’ll have to wait until 2018 comes to get more concrete information.
Ok, I promise to be a bit moderate with these reveals (aka leaks) for now. After the reveal of the LEGO Ideas Ship in a Bottle (21313), the 2018 Summer LEGO Technic sets, and the uber cool LEGO Creator Roller Coaster (31084), here comes another collection of LEGO sets to watch out for in June, 2018. Frankly, this has been floating around the Internet for quite some time and thanks to various sources, we now have a somewhat better idea of what to expect from the Summer LEGO Ninjago Masters of Spinjitzu sets next year. Please pardon me for the deliberately horrendous blurred images; but if you’re already in the know, then I’m sure you wouldn’t mind seeing them like this.
Similar to the spinners which are essentially part of the LEGO Ninjago Masters of Spinjitzu theme, LEGO opted to have a rehash of these spinners and give them a dragon master twist. The box art for set numbers 70644 to 70649 seems to suggest that these spinners will somehow include a vertical flying play feature which is kind of cool for a LEGO set. Please take this with a pinch of salt since this is just my observation based on my initial impression on the design of the box art and in keeping up with the dragon storyline with LEGO Ninjago’s Season 9.
It is also interesting to note that the grayed out box for set 70657 is rumored to be another D2C LEGO Ninjago Movie set similar in scale to the grandiose LEGO Ninjago City (70620). Again, these are just speculations given set 70657’s predicted price point, however, things might be different once LEGO gives their official statement. Lastly, bear in mind that these are preliminary titles so chances are LEGO might revise the names of these sets as they see it fit.
