From the Rumor Mill: LEGO 100 Years of Disney Collectible Minifigures (71038) May Include 18 Characters

Disney will mark its 100th anniversary this 2023 and LEGO is sharing in the festivities by launching several LEGO Disney tie-in sets. And this included the much-anticipated LEGO 100 Years of Disney Collectible Minifigures (71038).

While the recently released LEGO CMF Series 24 (71037) still enjoys a lot of attention, LEGO fans and completionists are now setting their eyes on the next series expected to be released in May. And rumors have it that 18 unforgettable Disney characters will grace the upcoming LEGO 100 Years of Disney Collectible Minifigures. According to the Back 2 Brick podcast as reported by Promobricks, this upcoming series will feature the following Disney characters in their minifigure versions.

Oswald the Lucky Rabbit (from classic Disney shorts)

Pinocchio with a fish bowl (from Pinocchio, 1940)

Baymax with red hoverboard (from Big Hero Six, 2014)

Evil Queen with Magic Mirror (from Snow White, 1937)

This is a very impressive list if I may say since it’s not an easy feat to select which characters will get the LEGO minifigure treatment. Though I was hoping as well to see an official Snow White minifigure thrown in in this series, considering that LEGO has already released the classic Disney Princess’ Duplo and minidoll iterations.

The four-armed Stitch is number 1 on my list being a fan of Experiment 626 myself. Oswald the Lucky Rabbit is probably next considering the influence of the iconic animated character on Disney’s later characters.

So what do you think of this rumored LEGO 100 Years of Disney Collectible Minifigures? Do you think there are other characters that should have been included? Let me know in the comments below.

New LEGO Promos and GWP Sets Now Up!

In case you missed it, several LEGO promos and GWP or gift-with-purchase sets are now over at LEGO’s home shopping portal and all LEGO stores. Now that the LEGO Icons Blacktron Cruiser (40580) promotional set has finally concluded, we can expect 2 additional GWP sets to be around (until supplies last) starting January 15 to 25, 2023.

LEGO Promos and GWP to Watch Out For

The LEGO Year of the Rabbit (40575) can be yours for a minimum single-receipt qualifying purchase of any LEGO products worth $85 and more. This LEGO promotion is the 9th Chinese zodiac-inspired set from the seasonal series, so if you’re a completionist and wish to collect all these brick-built collectibles, you better not miss out on this one.

lego year of the rabbit

If you’re a LEGO VIP member, you are also in for another exclusive treat. Starting this week until the end of the month, there are two promos and GWP sets that you can bag for free with qualifying purchases. The LEGO Houses of the World 1 (40583) is presumably the first in the series of several culturally inspired brick-built home dioramas. Coming in 348 pieces, this LEGO VIP-exclusive set comes with a rather high price point in order to claim. For a single-receipt purchase of any LEGO products worth $250 and more, this freebie will be automatically added to your bag as well.

And to continue the Lunar New Year festivities, LEGO VIP members can also expect to have the  LEGO Lunar New Year VIP Add-On Pack (40605). This LEGO promotion features an awesome selection of seasonal LEGO pieces offered in variant colors such as recolored lantern pieces, and minifigures accessories, including a couple of rabbit figures. You can have this freebie automatically added to your cart for a minimum single-receipt LEGO purchase worth $50 or more.

I have to admit that getting LEGO Houses of the World 1 (40583) may prove to be a bit pricy if you’re looking forward to collecting and completing its series. But if you have your LEGO budget ready for this month, then it’s still nice to see this collectible added to your cart for free.  And since LEGO has already confirmed that there will be three more sets under this theme, then we better be ready for some serious LEGO spending.

What LEGO MOC Will You Build This Week? Try These Custom LEGO Star Wars Minifigures!

LEGO Star Wars is still going strong in 2023. In fact, 3 out of 10 LEGO sets that were ranked by LEGO fans over at Brickset as their top 10 faves for this year come from the galaxy far away. And for this week’s LEGO MOC build, we’ll focus on these custom LEGO Star Wars minifigures by LEGO fan Nick Chen.

These Custom LEGO Star Wars Builds Comes In Small Packages

I agree that LEGO has come up with many impressive LEGO Star Wars sets. Due to their design playability or the sheer number of pieces that comprise them, such sets are things of beauty to hold and play with. Now, if you’re like me, you’ll probably want a little bit of this or of that, especially regarding a set with a galaxy filled with so many characters and elements. Probably that’s the reason why I am fond of small collectibles from this part of the LEGO Star Wars galaxy, and I have particularly in mind the LEGO Star Wars Microfighters. With more than 35 sets under this subtheme since 2014, it’s an excellent alternative for their more extensive (and more expensive) siblings of starfighters and vehicles.

One particular LEGO fan probably has the same inclination as much as I do about keeping things small and yet, fun and playable. Nick Chen has a knack for creating tiny LEGO Star Wars ships that are smaller than their Microfighter counterparts – in fact, even smaller than the ones LEGO had before with their LEGO Star Wars Planets back in 2012. Nick came up with a fun idea of having his LEGO Star Wars minifigs donned with their particular ship as costumes and was kind enough to share his work for the LEGO community to enjoy. The photos below came from Nick’s Flickr page. Check some of his customized LEGO Star Wars minifigs below.

These small minifig creations are cute and fun enough to make up your dioramas. You may also create unique scenes, pairing them with any LEGO Star Wars sets that you have.

What do you think? What is your favorite among Nick’s LEGO Star Wars minifig costumes? What micro fighter would you like to pair it up with? Share with us what you think in the comments section below.

LEGO Ideas Pick-a-Brick Sets Coming Soon

In case you missed it, the LEGO Ideas website announced nine new LEGO Ideas Pick-a-Brick sets to be released this year. As part of last year’s re-opening of the LEGO Ideas Test Lab platform, these nine new designs were submitted as digital designs, in which LEGO Ideas members were invited to participate.

If you recall, the LEGO Ideas Test Lab was launched in 2017 as a new seedbed for testing smaller LEGO sets following a crowdsourcing model. The concept went into hiatus for some time and was re-launched in September last year in collaboration with LEGO’s Pick-a-Brick service. Participation in the re-launch was on a per-invite basis, where several prolific LEGO Ideas members and builders were asked to join. And after several months of review, we finally get to see our first wave of LEGO Ideas Pick-a-Brick sets.

There is no word yet on their exact release dates. But we can be sure that seven will be available anytime soon over at LEGO.com, while two will be available as seasonal sets. Chances are that they will be available via LEGO Pick-a-Brick packs together with their digital instructions.

Check them out below, and let me know your favorite.

What LEGO Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania Minifigures Do You Want to See?

The second trailer of MCU’s initial Phase 5 film has been released with plenty of details that hint at the challenges awaiting our quantum heroes.  We’re still over a month from its theatrical release, and LEGO seems to be holding the lid pretty tight on its upcoming LEGO Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania tie-in sets. In case you missed it, here’s the film’s most recent trailer:

There’s plenty to unpack in this latest trailer, with Marvel Studios providing us with more details on the impending struggle between Kang and Scott Lang’s Ant-Man, and the motivation behind their actions that will propel the MCU further into its Multiversal Saga. We also get a better look at some of the film’s main characters and potential LEGO Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania minifigures that may go along with it. LEGO usually reveals any of its movie tie-ins a month or two before the film’s release.

But Phase 5’s debut film might prove to be an exception, considering how massive and profound Quantumania will be for the future of the MCU. So we’re probably looking at a release date of its official LEGO set sometime toward the end of this month.

Historically, the last two previous Ant-Man films each got one LEGO Marvel Super Heroes set. But with last year’s MCU films receiving 2-3 LEGO tie-in sets, and considering that Quantumania is the final solo act of our tiny Avenger, then it’s not a longshot to think that we might receive more than 1 LEGO set for this latest MCU offering.

While waiting for its official press release, here’s my take on some of the LEGO Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania minifigures that LEGO may reveal anytime soon.

Scott and Cassie Lang, and Hope Van Dyne
lego quantumania 05

This is a no-brainer and the reason why I believe that there could be more than one LEGO Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania set that will be revealed soon. I’m quite positive that Scott, Cassie, and Hope’s minifigures will be included in the roster, but they will not be included in one set. It has been LEGO’s strategy with licensed minifigure characters (especially in the case of Marvel and DC) to distribute them across sets to maximize the sales of the theme.

I also expect to see a new design for Ant-Man and Wasp, while collectors will undoubtedly look forward to that purple minifigure iteration of Cassie.

Kang

lego quantumania

And no LEGO Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania set will be complete without villainous Kang the Conqueror. Marvel Studios did an excellent job of rendering Jonathan Major’s Kang the Conqueror on the big screen. It is also fantastic to have our first minifigure version of him with and without his iconic helmet and glowing blue face shield.

MODOK
lego quantumania 03

MODOK (Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing) has been around in LEGO form since 2014 with Avengers: Hulk Smash (76018) and Avengers Helicarrier (76153). And it will be great to see a third minifigure version of this superpowered cybernetic bighead.

I definitely prefer the single-piece version of his minifigure, as seen in Avengers: Hulk Smash, rather than a printed half-circular wall element for his face. The only question is if LEGO will also include a battle-ready version of him, complete with the gold armor we saw from the trailer.

Quantum Foot Soldiers
lego quantumania 02

poster quantumania

lego quantumania 07
Mysterio’s minifigure version, as seen in LEGO Marvel Superheroes Spider-Man vs Mysterio’s Drone Attack (76184) from 2021.

I strongly feel that Kang’s henchmen will also get the minifigure treatment and be included in an official LEGO set. In case you noticed, these faceless foot soldiers were also placed front and center in the newest poster of the film. Unlike MCU’s previous gnarly-looking henchmen (such as the Chitauri), these quantum foot soldiers are more reminiscent of how Mysterio’s minifigure looks like.

I bet these upcoming LEGO Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania sets will feature Kang’s time-ship and another one that might focus on that scene where MODOK is included. I guess we have to wait for the next couple of weeks until we finally see what LEGO has in the works.

LEGO Year of the Rabbit (40575) Official Images Released

Last month we caught glimpse of this year’s seasonal set based on the Chinese zodiac. And this time around, 2023’s LEGO Year of the Rabbit (40575) has been listed at LEGO’s home shopping portal, and with it, we get better images of what to expect from this collectible. Take a look.

40575

Like its predecessors, the LEGO Year of the Rabbit will be offered as a gift-with-purchase set. According to The Brick Fan, it will be the next promotional item starting January 15, right after the promo ends for the LEGO Icons Blacktron Cruiser (40580). Our brick-built bunny will also be available as a free item from January 15 to 25 (just in time for the Chinese New Year) for a minimum single receipt purchase of any LEGO product worth $85 and above at all LEGO stores or LEGO.com.

This current offering comes in at 194 pieces and is valued at $10. It comes in a predominantly black-and-white color scheme and features a pair of poseable ears and expressive eyes. It also includes a special red envelope to mark the Lunar New Year celebration.

40575 alt1 40575 alt2

The LEGO Year of the Rabbit is also the 9th Chinese zodiac-inspired set in the series starting with the LEGO Year of the Sheep (40418) in 2015. Though LEGO released a Year of the Snake (10250) set in 2013, its distribution was only available in China at that time and does not follow the design aesthetics of the current series. So we’re still three years away from having a complete set of these seasonal sets, with the Year of the Dragon (2024), Year of the Snake (2025), and Year of the Horse (2026) still waiting for their LEGO debut.

What LEGO MOC Will You Build This Week? How About a Custom LEGO Steampunk Walking Ship!

NOTE: The “What LEGO MOC” series is a look back at some of the best LEGO MOCs that we featured here in the blog for the past decade, plus new ones as well. If you’re new here on our website, MOC stands for “My Own Creation” using LEGO bricks and represents anything original that a LEGO fan builder created. I hope that through the What LEGO MOC series, you’ll get inspired to start building that original creation of yours. So let’s jumpstart this week with this one.

I’ve been a huge fan of Jason Allemann ever since I first saw his LEGO Ideas Maze (21305) back in 2016. It was his very first project to become an approved LEGO set followed by a second one in 2018 with the creation of the LEGO Ideas Pop-Up Book (21315).

A prolific builder himself, and a LEGO Technic and Mindstorms expert, his website features some of the most awesome brick creations you have ever seen. Take for example his custom LEGO Steampunk Walking Ship (dubbed as Land Ship Amagosa) as seen on his JK Brickworks YouTube channel.

Check Out Our What LEGO MOC? Entry – the Impressive Custom LEGO Steampunk Walking Ship!

what lego moc

Jason’s robotic walking ship is inspired by the Strandbeest walker design created by renowned Dutch physicist and inventor Theo Jansen. Using LEGO Mindstorms, Jason’s MOC consists of a series of cams that go around the robot and pull the legs at certain pivot points. Operated remotely, the walking ship has a very smooth balance and a responsive set of controls as you can see from the video below:

Jason was also kind enough to share some of the inner workings of his LEGO MOC Steampunk Walking Ship over at his website.  His walking creation features a post-apocalyptic trading ship complete with a functional crane that works in conjunction with its walking mechanism. This is truly one amazing What LEGO MOC entry.

To help you get started, Jason also offers a free building guide to recreate the frame, crankshaft, and legs of this walking wonder. As you can see, mobility for this original LEGO creation is provided by LEGO Power Functions (or Mindstorms if you happen to have one) and other related accessories.

The nice thing is that even if you don’t have those rather pricey power function systems, you can still build a static model using Jason’s building instructions and create your theme or design from there. From the ground to the skies, you just let your LEGO imagination fly.

Do you have a particular original LEGO creation you want to take center stage in our What LEGO MOC series? Let me know in the comments below.

LEGO Ideas 2023 Sets To Watch Out For

There are plenty of reasons to be excited for the next wave of LEGO Ideas 2023 sets. Though still in development at this time of posting, there’s already great anticipation for these sets.

2022 was a great year for LEGO Ideas, with a total of 9 LEGO fan-designed sets, 2 of which were approved to become gift-with-purchase sets in the likes of Cosmic Cardboard Adventures (40533) and Ray Castaway (40566). And for this year, the LEGO Ideas Design Team certainly has a lot on its plate as fans eagerly await their official rendition of this year’s LEGO Ideas 2023 sets.

For this year, we can expect the same number of official LEGO Ideas 2023 sets to be released similar to that of last year with 7 approved product ideas that eventually had the green light from designers. These LEGO Ideas 2023 sets are still in the works, and here’s a recap of this next wave of community-supported sets that we can’t wait to put our hands on this year.

In order of its review results, these approved sets are:

We can also expect a fan-designed, gift-with-purchase set in the form of a Tribute to Galileo Galilei to be available this year. If you recall, this original creation was the grand prize winner of the LEGO Ideas’ Ready, Set, Go, STEM Challenge in May last year. Created by fan designer Firecracker_, this GWP will most likely be offered towards the 2nd half of 2023.

It is also worth noting that there are 3 more LEGO Ideas sets to watch out for, though they are more likely to be released by 2024. These upcoming sets are based on winning entries that came in on top of LEGO Ideas Challenges in collaboration with Target and Wizards of the Coast LLC. I’m including them here for our reference but they will most likely be available next year. However, bear in mind that nothing is set in stone as far as their release dates are concerned until such time that LEGO confirms their availability.

Top 10 Most Wanted LEGO Disney Sets of All Time

NOTE: This article may contain affiliate links. Purchasing sets through these links allows us to earn a small commission (for a few LEGO pieces, and some digital grease to help us keep our site up and running).

This year marks the 100th year anniversary of Disney, and with LEGO as one of its most active global partners in promoting the House of Mouse, we can certainly expect plenty of interesting LEGO Disney sets in 2023 aside from the first wave of sets offered this month. So while we’re counting the months until October in celebration of Disney’s 100th year anniversary, let’s take a look at the top 10 most wanted LEGO Disney sets of all time.

Sorting through Brickset’s database reveals some interesting facts. Since 2012, LEGO has partnered with Disney to offer its first full LEGO sets under the Disney Princess theme. However, the partnership between the two extends as early as 1999 when LEGO introduced its very first Disney-inspired in the form of LEGO Duplo Pooh and his Honeypot (2981). Since then, there were several LEGO and Disney tie-in sets that were offered alongside the release of films such as Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, Toy Story, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Cars among others.

2981 1
This 8-piece, LEGO Duplo set from 1999 was the very first Disney-inspired set that LEGO introduced.

2014 saw the launch of the LEGO Disney Princess sets that were offered to younger LEGO Disney fans. They featured minidoll versions of Rapunzel, Cinderella, and Ariel akin to the LEGO Friends theme. 2014 also somewhat defined the direction in which LEGO Disney sets are headed. And though Disney has broadened its film and content to include Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars, Disney still has a special place for its princesses and other classic characters.

So for this list of the 10 most wanted LEGO Disney sets of all time, we start our countdown in 2014 where LEGO puts the spotlight on some of the iconic Disney Princesses and the characters that we love and grew up with. There are also some sets that are based on more recent Disney characters that eventually caught the eye of LEGO Disney fans. Bear in mind that these sets were sourced from Brickset as reported owned and wanted by its registered members. Let’s take a look.

#10 – Cinderella’s Dream Carriage (41053)

274 pieces | Comes with 1 unique minidoll | Released: 2014

#9 – Anna & Kristoff’s Sleigh Adventure (41066)

#5 – Rapunzel’s Creativity Tower (41054)

#2 – Disney Train and Station (71044)

2,925 pieces | Comes with 5 unique minifigures | Released: 2019

71044 1

And unsurprisingly, the number one spot goes to what could be the grandest LEGO Disney set that LEGO offered.

#1 – Disney Castle (71040)

4,080 pieces |  Comes with 7 minifigures (6 unique to this set) | Released: 2016

71040 1

Just a disclaimer, this list by all means does not reflect the sentiment of the entire LEGO Disney fandom. However, it provides a hint at what could be at the top of the most wanted LEGO Disney sets for most of us. And some of these sets are still riding the waves of their popularity since the day they were announced. The LEGO Disney Castle (71040) and Disney Train and Station (71044) still enjoy the most favored spots on the top of the list, and it remains the same even after 6 years since it was introduced.

So what do you think of this selection? Are there other most wanted LEGO Disney sets that you feel should be on this list? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
