As you may have noticed, LEGO is now announcing sets coming this 2022, left and right. The reveals range across all popular themes and licensed IPs, as well as size. From sprawling city skylines to towering sci-fantasy rockets to adorable BrickHeadz, the January 1 launch window’s pretty packed. That goes also for the extremely small end of the LEGO set spectrum. Beyond a new LEGO Star Wars Microfighter we’ll also be seeing a selection of polybags. Granted, this particular LEGO reveal is sparsely detailed in comparison. We have no idea if the polybags are purchasable as is or GWPs instead, and when they’ll even appear.
While the following next-year LEGO polybags haven’t even got a LEGO.com listing, we at least know how they look now. Particularly noteworthy is the Technic polybag. Early in November the UK-published “LEGO Giant Series” Technic Mag featured a polybag in the cover. Their product numbers are even close enough by a few tens. Apparently they’d be the first Technic polybags to come out since the last ones in 2000. Sounds like it’s certainly worth collecting, along with the rest, as covered by The Brick Fan:
The key concept of LEGO has always been that, with any given number of bricks, one can build anything. True, most packaged LEGO sets are to build a specific building/vehicle/etc. They even have instruction manuals so that builders can assemble the pieces exactly as pictured. But ultimately, building with LEGO bricks can be one of the best outlets for creative freedom. LEGO Japan two Saturdays ago demonstrated that fact in partnership with Amazon Japan. The results of that promotional activity on social media would grab attention and ignite builder creativity.
Brick Fanatics brings us this interesting social media activity made possible by the Japanese divisions of LEGO and Amazon. The challenge: How would you combine two different LEGO set builds into a unified creation? LEGO JP’s original Twitter post (November 13, 2021) even provides an example.
The “Before” photo showcases the completed LEGO Technic Off-Road Buggy (42124) and LEGO Monkie Kid Lion Guardian (80021). The “After” photo reveals the Buggy revamped to have the Lion Guardian as a motif. LEGO Japan invites viewers to visit Amazon JP’s page, and post their own two-set fusions in the comments. Let’s go over to Amazon’s Japanese page now.
The real Japanese essence of this LEGO-Amazon team-up lies in this particular build. LEGO Ideas Tree House (21318) plus Botanical Collection Bonsai Tree (10281) equals Sakura Tree House. The featured LEGO sets are mostly available on Amazon.jp, or you can just go LEGO.com. They’re very inspiring fusions, right?
Every year the Toy Association honors the best products in the industry through its annual Toy of the Year Awards. It doesn’t take a follower of these events to know that LEGO is a regular nominee and awardee here. Being one of the biggest toy brands in modern history is a perk in itself. Furthermore, many of the sets they release year after year deserve nominations and wins. The 2022 Toy of the Year Awards is no exception. Of the 16 possible categories, LEGO has representation in at least eight. Some of these categories even have multiple LEGO nominees.
It’s amazing that one set from LEGO’s misfiring Vidiiyo theme also made it in. Then again, that would be the Toy Association’s call. Maybe the accolade (and a possible award) may reinvigorate interest in the Vidiyo line. Who can tell? Anyway, we wish LEGO’s 2022 Toy of the Year Award nominees the best of luck.
A decade or few back in the history of LEGO, it was perceived as a toy line for children. Rather, LEGO was primarily marketed for boys. But girls did enjoy playing with LEGO too, and eventually calls were made for girl-oriented products. The company complied, both with licensed IPs like Disney and original themes. The latter took several iterations, from LEGO Belville in the 1990s-2000s to LEGO Friends, introduced in 2012. That was fine at first. But at present in a world pushing for more inclusivity and less gender bias, that must change. And LEGO plans to lead in change.
The company made their intentions known on Monday, October 11, aka the United Nations International Day of the Girl. Through a statement on their official website and a new “Rebuild the World” video, LEGO charted a new direction in their product marketing.
Play inclusivity will be a guiding watchword, and the limits of gender stereotypes will be removed. Of course, these announcements also provoked some intense debate and even pushback. In response to a particularly nasty rumor that LEGO’s gender-bias removal means discontinuing LEGO Friends, the company had a counter-statement. No, LEGO Friends will not end. Its predominantly-female character cast will simply gain more male additions starting 2022, for balance.
Yes, put the torches and pitchforks down now. LEGO Friends isn’t going away. The theme’s celebrating its first decade next year! LEGO will however implement inclusive measure that goes both ways. Guys will simply appear more in Heartlake city. In turn, girls will become more common for upcoming LEGO minifigures in general, outside the licensed-IP themes. That’s one way to remove gender bias and stereotypes without benefiting one at the other’s expense. We’ll see how LEGO holds true to that with next year’s product releases.
It’s September, and that means the year 2021 is on its final quarter stretch. For LEGO this means a big wave of product releases serving as a teaser for the coming holidays. If you recall several weeks ago, LEGO servers somewhat accidentally uploaded an early digital copy of the Japanese LEGO Catalog for the 2nd half of 2021. By doing so, it gave us an early look at some of the sets (from LEGO Star Wars, City Stuntz, and Technic themes for example) that are slated to arrive this summer. Needless to say, the catalog was removed right away perhaps as part of TLG’s damage control with regards to accidental reveals. But now that most of the sets in that product listing are now up at LEGO Shop@Home, then the said digital catalog in question is once again uploaded. And this time around, giving us our first look at this year’s LEGO Friends Advent Calendar (41690).
Right off the bat, we can notice that this set features a good number of micro-dolls, similar to what LEGO offered in last year’s LEGO Friends Advent Calendar (41420) with the inclusion of two elves. For this year’s holiday offering, LEGO opted to render our Friends characters in similar micro-doll form.
And of course, aside from these new micro-dolls, this year’s LEGO Friends Advent Calendar will feature the usual staple of miniature, buildable holiday ornaments such as a fireplace, a doghouse, tree stockings, mailbox, lampost, and much more. It is scheduled to be available to the public starting September 9 just in time for the holidays and alongside the now listed LEGO Harry Potter Advent Calendar (76390).

Following the reveal coming from various 3rd party retailers, we now have more information about what to expect from this year’s wave of LEGO Friends summer 2021 sets. Retailers seem to be on a roll recently with their recent reveals of LEGO’s line of Creator 3-in-1, Ninjago, and Speed Champions summer 2021 sets to name a few. And now thanks to Dutch online retailer Van Der Meulen, we have our look at this year’s batch of LEGO Friends summer 2021 collection.
These are not yet listed over at LEGO Shop@Home as of this posting, and neither Van Der Meulen indicated their respective price points or their corresponding number of pieces. However, the following product images are sufficient in themselves to provide us a better look at what this summer wave has to offer.
From the looks of it, this new series of LEGO Friends sets will continue the Cube subtheme, and will also include forest preservation and fairgrounds subthemes as well. I’ll update this post once LEGO makes them available over at their online shopping portal. Let’s take a look.
