Will LEGO Fast and Furious Sets Happen in 2020?

With LEGO and Universal further sealing their partnership to create future brickfilms, the potential to offer more licensed themes that are under Universal’s cinematic repertoire just leveled up. While LEGO Trolls are now up over at LEGO Shop@Home and the offer of LEGO Minions sets is now set in stone, it looks like a new theme is speeding over the horizon. According to Brick Fanatics’s sources, it is most likely that we will also be seeing a new LEGO Fast and Furious set based on the long-running franchise.

fast and furious poster

The Brick Fan is also reporting that this possible LEGO Fast and Furious set will be a stand-alone vehicle less the minifigures, that will most likely follow the design tracks of what LEGO did with the LEGO Technic App-Controlled Top Gear Rally Car (42109). Furthermore, there are speculations that this new set will be based on Brian O’Conner’s  1995 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS as seen from the first film. I think this is a great choice and fitting tribute for Paul Walker if this news turns out to be true considering the fact that this year will mark the release of the franchise’s 9th film slated for May.

1995 mitsubishi eclipse

A LEGO Technic or Creator Expert set is in order if such is indeed the case, especially considering that similar to the Top Gear Rally Car, a set based on a LEGO Fast and Furious theme is expected to cater more to adult fans of LEGO. I can just imagine how cool it is to see the Porsche 911 GT3 RS (42056), Bugatti Chiron (42083), and Ford Mustang (10265) together with a possible LEGO Mitsubishi Eclipse GS set.

As cool as it may sound, consider this piece of news as a rumor until such time that LEGO officially confirms this to be true.

The LEGO Star Wars Mandalorian Battle Pack (75267) Is the Perfect Way to Conclude An Action-Packed Season

Disney+ has wrapped up the first season of its hit Star Wars series The Mandalorian, and now is the perfect time to show some LEGO love to the gunslingin’ galactic outcast that we all learned to admire. The show’s second season is still far off, and while we linger on some of the cliffhangers from the previous season, let’s take a look at what could probably be LEGO’s ultimate tribute to the most honorable warrior tribe of the Star Wars galaxy. And if you’re still pondering on whether or not to get the LEGO Star Wars Mandalorian Battle Pack (75267), then read on and take a look at what this latest LEGO Star Wars Battle Pack has to offer.

Since the early release of the Mandalorian Battle Pack (75267) at LEGO Shop@Home’s UK portal a couple of days ago, the highly sought after minifigure pack is now on backorder status. I guess that says more than enough to the popularity of this set which is slated to be offered in the US come January 1st. The set comes in 102 pieces and is expected to retail in the US for 15 bucks.

75267 1

When I first saw this pop up in the LEGO online store, my first reaction was just “wow”. I may not be a hardcore Star Wars fan myself, but seeing the level of love that LEGO designers poured out to this set immediately pulled some heartstrings. The set evoked the same admiration that I felt when I first saw the LEGO Movie 2 Benny’s Space Squad (70841), that it leaves little room for debate on whether or not I’m going to get it.

Mandalorian Battle Pack (75267)

The Mandalorian Battle Pack (75267) features four minifigure characters from the battle-torn warrior tribe and is the second set that is specifically tied-in to the Disney+ series following the LEGO Star Wars AT-ST Raider (75254). In fact, it is the first Battle Pack in the Star Wars theme to receive such a varied treatment. Needless to say, its a huge improvement from what LEGO offered back in 2011 with the LEGO Star Wars The Clone Wars Mandalorian Battle Pack (7914), which featured minifigure characters of the same design. I will even dare say that apart from the Bounty Hunter Speeder Bike Battle Pack (75167), there is no other collection that features such a wide spectrum of characters in a single LEGO Star Wars Battle Pack. Moreover, the unique designs of each of the minifigure on the current iteration not only highlights the thoughtful creative process that went through them but also a careful retelling of the hardships that this battle-weary tribe has to endure.

If there is another thing that endears me to this set is the story that it conveys that superbly coincides with the events that transpired in the current Disney+ series. The designers are sensitive enough to include additional details in the Mandalorian Battle Pack (75267) that ensure the minifigures will be faithful in showing the tribe’s pursuit of establishing their once-proud clan. From the tribe’s battle-scarred armor brought about by their countless skirmishes with the remnants of the fallen empire to their attempts of establishing a name of their own through their customized armors, the varied colors of each minifigure also give a certain distinct personality for these minifigure characters. And if you will look closely, you’ll also notice that none of their individual designs are repeated. From their colors, helmet designs, and even their armors’ knicks and scratches, all of them are unique in their selves. This is what I really love about LEGO – the level of detail and the effort that they will go through in conveying the story behind these characters is really outstanding.

75267 4

If there is one thing that I would like to see improved in this set is the fact the designers opted for stud-shooting blasters instead of the unique weapons that we saw them wield on Episode 3 of the series. I would love to see, for example, several heavy infantry minifigure accessories and that jetpack that the lead character eagerly wanted to have. Though the speeder bike is an above-average build for this type of set, the defense fort may need a bit of improvement. But considering the piece restrictions that the designers need to work with, then I guess its not such a big deal in the long run.

Our Mandalorian hero badly needs that jet pack.

In conclusion, the LEGO Star Wars Mandalorian Battle Pack (75267) is a piece of LEGO Star Wars memorabilia that you certainly want to take hold of. Its current backorder status over at UK LEGO Shop@Home proves how much it is in demand. And with its upcoming North America release on January 1st, you need to be quick in making your purchases. However, you might be interested to know that our official storefront – The Brick Show Shop – is also featuring these LEGO Star Wars warrior minifigs, and much more. You may check them out by clicking on the following images below which will lead you directly to our store.

A Look at the Unreleased “The Billion Brick Race” Characters

If you recall back in 2016, when things are still smooth sailing between the LEGO Group and Warner Bros, a grand plan was made to bring the LEGO brand at the forefront of mainstream media. Riding on the success of The LEGO Movie back in 2014, more films were slated to be released following the footsteps of the LEGO Group’s first theatrical endeavor. Though we saw the success of the LEGO Batman Movie, the next two brick-films – the LEGO Ninjago Movie and the LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part – were not that close to what their predecessors managed to achieve. So it doesn’t come as a surprise if LEGO and Warner Bros. eventually decided to pull the plug on yet another possible theatrical collaboration. The Billion Brick Race was initially planned for release sometime in May this year, but unfortunately, we will never see this film on the big screen. And these include potential LEGO tie-in sets that it may come about later on.

However, such setbacks did not discourage the film’s would-be director to share some of his minifigure character designs for The Billion Brick Race. Jorge R. Gutirrez, who also helmed the animated film, The Book of Life, took to Twitter to share some of his initial character sketches of the colorful characters that were expected to appear in the film. Take a look.

Since the shelving of the film project and Jorge’s departure from Warner Bros, he saw it fitting to share his creation with the rest of the world and to the LEGO fan community in particular. There is no clear definite plot yet regarding The Billion Brick Race, but the way the characters were designed gives us a grasp of the overall feel of the film.

The Billion Brick Race

Admittedly, Jorge incorporated some of the 80s and 90s pop icons and symbols and fused it with his signature art design. I also appreciate what he did coming up with a LEGO minifigure character in a wheelchair. The diversity that he introduces with regards to these minifig character sketches is also admirable, together with his keen attention to detail. Just take a look at tattoos on some of the minifigs’ arms.

02 billion brick race

One particular point of interest is the oversized minifigure of what I think is a wrestler which follows the same mold as that of Axl from the now discontinued LEGO Nexo Knights. I feel that this form of minifigure has a lot of potential for a LEGO set but sadly, we don’t see it further developed after the end of Nexo Knights and now much more with the shelving of The Billion Brick Race.

[03 billion brick race

Who knows if Universal will eventually pick up where Warner Bros left have of with regards to this would-be brickfilm. I personally want to see this next LEGO film happen, and perhaps we just have to wait and see if the LEGO Group and Universal will put this back on the table.

January 2020 LEGO Store Calendar Now Up And Loaded With Promos To Start The Year Right

As we literally count the days before we say goodbye to 2019, LEGO has now given us a glimpse of things to come with their January 2020 LEGO Store Calendar. Those who are looking forward to the majority LEGO 2020 sets –  ranging from the City, Technic, Ninjago and Creator themes just to name a few – that will launch at the turn of the year, you’ll be glad to know that LEGO is throwing in a good number of promos and freebies to watch out for. You may download a copy of the calendar right here as we breakdown each of these freebies.

Free LEGO Turquoise (853380) or Purple (853379) Keychain

Promo period: January 1 – 12, 2020

January 2020 LEGO Store Calendar

From January 1 to 12, every single-receipt purchase of any LEGO product or merchandise equivalent to $35 USD or more, will entitle you to a free LEGO Keychain either in Turquoise or Purple variants. It’s not really that much, but I like the vibrant colors of these 2×4 bricks and I wouldn’t mind having them as part of my usual gears and accessories.

Free LEGO Year of the Rat (40355) Seasonal Set

Promo period: January 13 to 26, 2020

January 2020 LEGO Store Calendar

Following the tradition of seasonal Chinese New Year sets, LEGO now releases its 7th promotional set based on the Chinese zodiac. Last year we saw LEGO offering the Year of the Pig (40186) set, and for 2020 it is the adorable  Metal Rat’s turn to have a LEGO set dedicated to it. Those who will opt to make their LEGO purchases from January 13 to 26 equivalent to $80 USD and above will get the exclusive LEGO Year of the Rat (40355) set. These seasonal freebies are usually highly sought after so expect these to have a rather short period of availability.

Free Collectible LEGO Star Wars Obi-Wan Kenobi Collectible Minifigure (30624)

Promo period: December 6, 2019 to January 31, 2020

30624 1

Following the subtheme of the LEGO Star Wars 20th Anniversary Edition sets, this limited edition LEGO Star Wars Obi-Wan Kenobi Collectible Minifigure (30624) does not come together with the aforementioned sets and is only available as an exclusive freebie from December 6, 2019 to January 31, 2020. For every single-receipt purchase of any LEGO Star Wars sets amounting to $40 USD, you’ll see this relatively rare minifig added to your cart. Since this has a longer promo period as compared to other deals, then we can somehow hope that LEGO has stacked up on this anniversary collectible.

Free Exclusive LEGO Hidden Side Drag Racer (40408)

Promo period: January 24 to February 9, 2020

January 2020 LEGO Store Calendar

Fans of LEGO’s new spooky-fun theme will be glad to know that LEGO is throwing in another freebie following its Newbury Juice Bar (40336) exclusive promotional released earlier in September. The LEGO Hidden Side Drag Racer (40408) will be added to your cart automatically for every LEGO purchase worth  $45 USD and more made between January 24 to February 9, 2020. This has a lower qualifying purchase as compared to its predecessor. I really can’t figure much about the build based on this image, but I’m sure we’ll get better images soon.

Free Make-and-Take LEGO Creator Newsstand

Promo period: January 8, 2020

January 2020 LEGO Store Calendar

To celebrate the release of next year’s LEGO Creator Expert Bookshop (10270), LEGO Stores are offering a free make and take build in the form of the LEGO Creator Newsstand. I like the more compact design on this particular newsstand, which somewhat shows a marked improvement on what LEGO offered with the LEGO City Bus Station (60154) back in 2017. Similar to other in-store promos, this freebie will be exclusively available to those who will visit a local LEGO store to participate in this building event. Bear in mind that there are limited spaces available so be sure to sign-up in-store starting January 6. This activity is also intended for LEGO fans and participants ages 15 and above.

Free LEGO Lunar New Year Dragon Build

January 2020 LEGO Store Calendar

LEGO celebrates 2020’s Chinese Lunar New Year with a free make-and-take build for younger LEGO fans. LEGO FORMA (81000) Now Available at UK LEGO Shop@Home BUT Will “Not Be Launched Further”

It seems that LEGO might be pulling the plug earlier than expected from its first crowd-funded project. After the first images of the LEGO FORMA (81000) set began to appear on LEGO servers earlier in July, fans of the concept were hoping that it will be out soon. However, for some reason, it went from a roller coaster ride of being what it seems to be a limited, regional release to know being virtually discontinued.

LEGO Forma (81000)

LEGO has posted over its LEGO FORMA Indiegogo project page the decision that it will no longer be launching LEGO Forma (81000) in its current form without going to the specifics of why it decided to pull the plug at this early stage of the set’s release.

Based on these key learnings, we have decided that LEGO FORMA will not be launched further in its present form. We know there is a lot of love for the concept out there, and we will make sure all our learnings are fueled into the broader organization and taken into consideration for future concepts.

However, if there is any consolation that fans of this LEGO concept may have is the fact that LEGO Shop@Home in the UK has made the LEGO FORMA (81000) available for purchase. I really hope that LEGO will reconsider and eventually opt to offer this outside of the UK region, but knowing that LEGO’s decision is to essentially discontinue it, then you might want to take this advantage of purchasing the set especially if you’re based in the UK.

Here are the product details for the LEGO FORMA (81000) set for your reference. Shoutout to Jeremy for the heads up.

Cruise The Brick Streets With This Upcoming LEGO Ideas Vintage Car GWP Set

Back in October, LEGO Ideas launched its next brick-building contest encouraging LEGO fans to create their best version of a vintage car that will cruise the streets of your LEGO Modular sets. If you recall back in May, we get to see our first fan-inspired gift-with-purchase (GWP) set in the form of the LEGO Ideas Space Rocket Ride (40335). LEGO Now in Talks With Universal Pictures For Its Next Brickfilm

It looks like LEGO is cozying up with Universal Pictures, with the goal of working towards its next brickfilm endeavor. After launching its series of major brick-inspired animations from the highly successful LEGO Movie and toward its not lackluster sequel, the LEGO Group practically cut ties with WB with the unfortunate cancellation of its next brickfilm, a LEGO Movie spin-off, The Billion Brick Race.

However, an exclusive report from the Variety now tells us that Universal Pictures will be the next film production company that will most likely pick up the pieces were WB left off. According to Variety’s sources that are privy to the confidential deal, the said partnership will have a “much broader use” of the various IPs that LEGO featured in the past.  Another exciting thing about the deal is the idea is having the most famous films under Universal’s belt translated into LEGO bricks. We already know that a LEGO Minions theme will be coming in the first half of 2020, and a bunch of LEGO Trolls World Tour tie-in sets will also be available come by January 1st. And after the success of both the LEGO Jurassic Park and Jurassic World sets, LEGO has a pretty good grasp of the benefits of partnering with Universal.

Here’s what Variety has to say about this LEGO-Universal deal.

Universal Pictures is in talks with the LEGO Group to develop new feature film properties based on the popular block toys, numerous sources close to the pending deal told Variety.

Producer Dan Lin, who has made several films based on the childhood staple at Warner Bros., is expected to remain on future projects despite his overall deal at Warners.

The pact with Universal is a much broader use of the intellectual property than the previous films, sources said, which saw actors like Chris Pratt and Elizabeth Banks bring life to geometric heroes in a world populated by Legos.

Among the ideas Universal is floating is a reimagining of its own content library through the toys, sources said. “Jurassic World,” for instance, saw a spinoff LEGO series made and sold globally in 2019, which aired in the U.S. on Nickelodeon. There are also concepts floating for live-action hybrid features.

Both parties are still mum about the deal, neither denying nor confirming the rumored deal about LEGO’s next brickfilm. I’ll keep you posted once the official word comes out.
