October has come and gone, and the Toys R Us Bricktober event has gone off without significant problems in the countries and markets that still have TRU stores. Stateside, LEGO collectors had to wait for other retail partners to carry the Bricktober LEGO minifigure sets, like with Barnes & Noble. Aside from the LEGO Harry Potter Bricktober minifigures (5005254) which were available on B&N, the other Bricktober sets were supposed to arrive in the US anywhere from this November to December; but when? At least we now have an idea on the general arrival time for the LEGO Ninjago Bricktober minifigure (5005257).
The latest word, as shared with fellow LEGO news source The Brick Fan, is that the LEGO Ninjago Bricktober minifigure (5005257), an assortment of four collectible minifigs, will be available on LEGO Stores as part of the expected Black Friday promotion. It is said to come free for every minimum LEGO purchase of $50, or while supplies last.
The LEGO Ninjago minifigures included in the Bricktober 2018 box set are “Oni Mask of Hatred” Harumi, Jay from the future, Mohawk and Kabuki Nya. For the moment, the Bricktober Ninjago being a Black Friday LEGO promotion, alongside the LEGO Seasonal Christmas Gift Box (40292, minimum $99 purchase) is a rumor until LEGO confirms it.
To paraphrase the old royal-era French exclamation “The King (Charles VI, 1422) is Dead, Long Live the King! (Charles VII, his son)” we might now say, “Toys R Us is Dead, Long Live Geoffrey’s Toy Box!” The venerable old toy retailer has coming back; and though its new form is smaller, it’s still great news.
The revival of Toys R Us in the US under the rebranding of Geoffrey’s Toy Box was made known last month, to be a store-within-a-store partnered with retail outlets. We now know that the first retailer to pick up Geoffrey’s Toy Box is Kroger Stores.
A recent press release by The Kroger Co. related that the grocery retail chain was going to put a Geoffrey’s Toy Box in 600 of their Kroger Family Stores, a massive number spread across no less than 30 states. Installation of some of these Geoffrey’s Toy Box kiosks has already begun, with plans to reach the max number in time for Holidays.
But wait; in order to test the waters of the old TRU’s new store-within-a-store concept, only certain toy brands are being offered in the Toy Boxes this month: Animal Zone, Imaginarium, Journey Girls, Edu Science, You & Me, and Just Like Home. Projected prices will range from $19.99 to $49.99 and product assortments will change from one location to another.
We’re not really sure if all 600 of Geoffrey’s Tox Box will simply follow a kiosk-type of display to sell TRU’s own branded toys. And to be frank, its a bit underwhelming to see how this Toy Box concept turned out. The selection of toys on display is not really most fans may expect, but then again, with such the small place and footprint that it occupies, not all major brands will, or can be represented.
Obviously, LEGO and other more prominent brands won’t be a part of Geoffrey’s Toy Box during its early days. And as much as we hope that this rebirth of Toys R Us will kick off and that the LEGO brand will be once again be a part of it, most LEGO fans are still holding on to their horses and are still a bit skeptical about it if such TRU re-branding will really be successful.
It remains to be seen during the next few months until the first quarter of 2019 if LEGO sets will be added to Geoffrey’s Toy Box. We just have to wait and see.
Here’s another DK offering that will appeal to LEGO Star Wars fans. After the reveal of the LEGO Harry Potter Build Your Own Adventure book a few days ago, Amazon UK has now listed a similar LEGO DK book that takes its cue from the LEGO Star Wars theme. The LEGO Star Wars Build Your Own Adventure Book Galactic Missions is now available for pre-order via Amazon UK, and I hope that it will find its way soon in the US.
Like other Build Your Own Adventure books, this upcoming release also comes with an exclusive LEGO Star Wars build and a minifigure. It also gives plenty of suggested alternate builds that you can create using the free LEGO pieces that goes with it. Understandably, the exclusive LEGO Star Wars build that comes with this book is still yet to be revealed, and we only have an outline of its image placeholder to speculate on. I couldn’t help but notice how similar it is to the shape and form of the Cloud City Patrol ship found in the recent LEGO Star Wars Betrayal at Cloud City (75222) set. The pieces also shown on the cover of the book, if this is the actual pieces to be used for the build, also hints on the predominantly dark red color of the ship.

The LEGO Star Wars Build Your Own Adventure Book Galactic Missions will be available on August 1, 2019 – a good nine months from now – and will retail for £19.99. That’s kind of a very long wait, but if you don’t mind the long wait, then I’m sure this book will eventually pop up at other Amazon regional sites very soon. It looks like LEGO is revving up its marketing for its next big film The LEGO Movie 2 as we inch closer towards the end of the year. After a month of inactivity, the film’s social media channels are now up and running again with several teasers that they posted during the past three days. Other than the usual roster of characters such as WyldStyle and Emmet who were prominently shown in the film’s official trailer, we still need to see more details on some of the movie’s prominent characters. Earlier in September, you may recall that LEGO gave us our first look at Batman’s Apocalypseburg swag with the new Wasteland Batman minifigure. This new rendition of Batman is definitely impressive, giving a sort of Mad Max vibe to the Dark Knight’s usual garb.
Thanks to two most recent posts from the LEGO Movie 2’s official Twitter page, we can now have a closer look at the Wasteland Batman minifigure, and some of the hidden features of this much-awaited minifig. Check the following post below.
And just in time for Halloween, LEGO seems to be giving us more hints on this new Batman costume. What is particularly interesting is the new torso print beneath the rugged, wasteland look as can be seen from the film’s Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) greetings.
Staying true with the film’s apocalyptic version of Bricksburg, other than the rugged new armor, the new Wasteland Batman minifigure also comes with a worn-out sleeveless shirt underneath secured by a brown body strap across his torso. It also looks like that this new minifig rendition comes with arm prints that resemble arm or elbow guards.
If this on-screen version of Batman turns out to be a physical minifigure, then I will not be surprised to see that this is perhaps one of the best minifigure versions of Batman in recent years. And if LEGO intends to create this air of exclusivity for the Wasteland Batman minifigure, then it will not be a wild guess to consider that LEGO might opt to include this in just one particular set. With 15 or more LEGO Movie 2 sets to be revealed on top of the first wave of sets shown last July, I am particularly excited to see what set the Wasteland Batman minifigure will be included.

If you recall earlier in September, the official images of the new LEGO Seasonal Christmas Carousel (40293) were released by a Russian online retailer giving us a hint that the limited edition set is our next LEGO GWP or gift-with-purchase set. Since then, news were somehow slow regarding this highly sought-after set which is similar to the likes of 2017’s Nutcracker (40254) and 2016’s Snowglobe (40223). So for those who are asking when and where this year’s LEGO Seasonal Christmas Carousel (40293) will be available locally then the LEGO Store December Calendar now gives us the answer.
Here’s a rundown of what to expect from the LEGO Store December 2018 calendar both online and in-store. My only minor complaint is that it still doesn’t give us an official confirmation of when will the Christmas Gift Box (40292) be available in the US, if ever it is still a possibility. LEGO has already released info that the Christmas Gift Box will be a promotional set that will be available in the In the UK and rest of Europe, so I’m still keeping my fingers crossed.
December 1 to 10 – Free Christmas Carousel (40293) with purchases over $99.
This gift-with-purchase set is free for every single receipt purchase of any LEGO products worth $99 and above. This promo will run from December 1 to 10 or while supplies last at all LEGO Stores and at shop.LEGO.com.
December 11 to 24 – Free Reindeer Ornament (5005253) with purchases over $50.
This next LEGO seasonal ornament was first revealed via the LEGO Store Calendar in China just a month ago, and it looks like it’s heading its way in the US as well. Frankly speaking, I wish LEGO could have offered an alternative to the Reindeer Ornament since I feel that this line of buildable LEGO Christmas decors are quite saturated already. But hey, it’s for free so I guess there’s no really complaining there.
December 1 to 31 – Throughout December, LEGO will offer Double VIP Points with purchases on select LEGO sets.
We have no info yet on what these qualifying sets will be, but we’ll keep you posted.
December 4 to 5 – The VIP Monthly Mini Build for December is a Sleigh (40287).
LEGO VIP members can register online for December’s LEGO Store Monthly Mini Build which is a Sleigh starting November 15.
