LEGO at SDCC’22: LEGO Avatar Sets Revealed

Twice the San Diego Comic-Con was cancelled by the juggernaut of the COVID pandemic. Thankfully, they tried to pull a “third time’s the charm” by holding a Special Edition event in late 2021. This brave gesture heralded the successful return of SDCC “as planned” in 2022, starting this July 21. A lot of upcoming major media releases can be expected to wow there until Sunday. LEGO proudly includes itself among the many multimedia presenters there. Already we have word on the highly-anticipated tie-ins to James Cameron’s “Avatar” film franchise, with the sequel coming in December.

At last, we see what LEGO’s project “Coconut” looks like. The Brick Fan has it that four sets for the LEGO Avatar line will grace San Diego Comic-Con. Fans of LEGO and James Cameron’s passion project now have their first official glimpse of the sets. Judging from the images we’re seeing now LEGO Avatar will have a great launch in October. That’s just 2 months before the Holiday premiere of the sequel subtitled “The Way of Water.” We’ll showcase each tie-in one by one here:

Build a LEGO Store Red Brick This July and August

Quite a few years ago, a possible surprise awaiting customers at a LEGO Store are brick-building events. You get to sit at a worktable and given several LEGO bricks along with instructions to assemble simple builds. You complete the exercise and you get to bring your build home. These activities not only hype up the kids, they can also serve as sources for extra LEGO bricks. Of course, in-store building events went quiet for a couple years due to the pandemic. Now however, they’re returning to a nice regularity, if this new activity is indication.

Brickset brings us word of this cool in-store building event at LEGO Store branches this month and next. In yet another part of “Celebrating 90 Years of Play”, store customers can build a big Red LEGO Brick. The event kicked off in US and UK LEGO Stores this July 20, lasting until the 21^st. And it’ll recur this coming August, this time from the 10^th to 11^th. The Big Red Brick looks fairly impressive and can be built from Ages 6 and up. If nothing else, the red and black pieces could be added later to one’s loose LEGO-brick stock.

Local LEGO Store customers will be able to participate in the Red Brick build, first come first served. Each store will also have limited quantities of LEGO bricks for building in all event days. Furthermore, only one Red Brick can be assembled and brought home per person. Lastly, this simple set can’t be bought conventionally. You miss the building event period this week however, and you’ll have to wait for August 10-11 for another chance.

Director of “Lightyear” Shares LEGO-built Prototype for Official Tie-In Toyline

Back in June, Disney-Pixar released “Lightyear”, a “Toy Story” spinoff depicting an in-universe film featuring Buzz Lightyear (Chris Evans). The movie supposedly chronicles the early adventures of the fictional character for which the Buzz action figure is based on. While not as emotionally gripping as the source films, the realistic take on Lightyear was visually-appealing at least. Filmmaker Angus McLane directed “Lightyear” and if the action sequences blew your mind, you know who to thank. McLane also had a hand in the tech designs for many of the machines/vehicles in the movie. And he had a familiar toy brand to help him materialize his ideas.

As if you haven’t guessed, LEGO was a key tool of Angus McLane in crafting designs for Disney-Pixar’s “Lightyear”. This much was revealed on social media according to Brick Fanatics. McLane tweeted this past August 19 his LEGO-built prototype for an official “Lightyear” toy. As seen below, he used mostly yellow LEGO bricks to build the Plasma Drill seen in the film. It looks pretty cool, doesn’t it? Even the official merchandise photo for comparison doesn’t quite capture the dynamic feel of the LEGO prototype. There’s also some corporate cringe involved. Turns out, the official “Lightyear” Plasma Drill toy comes from LEGO brand rival, Mattel.

But hey, Angus McLane did demonstrate how easily LEGO can translate imaginative fancies into “reality”. And it’s not as if LEGO would shy from partnering with their competitors. Icons Optimus Prime (10302), anyone? Now while the official LEGO Lightyear tie-ins are already launched, who’s to say there won’t be more later? And maybe an official brick-built Plasma Drill or more will be among that number?

Another Future LEGO Trademark: LEGO Dreamzzz

LEGO seems to be on a trademark registration kick lately. You might recall earlier this week our report on the registration of “Brick to the Future” in the US. The rather vague wording of the TM filing by LEGO Juris A/S fueled speculation on what the phrase will be about. One easy theory would be it having to do with the “Back to the Future” franchise. Given just how recent the LEGO Icons take on the movies’ DeLorean Time Machine (10300) is, can you blame us? And now LEGO Juris A/S has filed another trademark registration, this time in Europe.

Stone Wars reports that another TM registration filing by LEGO earlier this month has surfaced. This is “LEGO Dreamzzz” (yes, with the extra z’s). The name appears in an application to the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), dated July 13. That’s actually even earlier than “Brick to the Future”. Even a later application of LEGO Dreamzzz with the Patent Office (DPMA) in Stone Wars’ Germany was in the 20^th. The TM registration filing also contains the same generalized descriptions as “Brick to the Future”. Just what could LEGO be planning in the future? Are these new/original themes after all?

At the moment, both LEGO Dreamzzz and Brick to the Future are marked as awaiting examination in their respective PO’s. We probably won’t see any sign of both possible lines until sometime next year at the earliest. Stone Wars posits that LEGO is coming up with new theme lines to replace others that have been prematurely discontinued. LEGO Vidiyo comes to mind. One now wonders what Dreamzzz and BrickTTF will have to show us someday.

LEGO Icons Atari 2600 (10306) Officially Announced!

LEGO has now officially listed the LEGO Icons Atari 2600 (10306) – coming in August!

One can say that LEGO’s made a killer collaboration with videogame companies for new products. Look no further than the various sets for “Super Mario”, “Minecraft”, “Overwatch” and so much more. That synergy has also reached the very gaming platforms these games are played on too. Nostalgia must’ve filled LEGO-collecting gamers with the Nintendo Entertainment System set (71374) from 2020. So what if the brick-built NES console can’t actually play games? It just looked and felt so incredible. And Nintendo (and Sega) aren’t the only iconic names in gaming linking with LEGO. The Icons line will be getting a replica of yet another classic: the LEGO Icons Atari 2600 (10306) set.

Ladies and gentlemen, as The Brick Fan tells it, the official listing for LEGO Icons Atari 2600 (10306) is up. Like the earlier NES set, this is a to-scale reproduction of a historical early-80’s videogame console. And like 71374, the Icons Atari (10306) packs some surprises like only LEGO can make them. Atari’s even two-upping the NES’s solo “Super Mario” brick cartridge with three top-ranked carts. The LEGO Icons Atari 2600 also packs a controller, cart storage, mini-dioramas for said titles, and more. It might be a lot easier to just direct you to the link, and these product info snippets. For this writer, who played the Atari 2600 at a very young age, is still somewhat overwhelmed.

Videogame Auteur Hideo Kojima Shows Latest LEGO Ideas Set on Twitter

Let’s face it: LEGO’s such a big brand that it definitely has loads of fans and collectors worldwide. Among that sprawling fan community are some big names to many others, be it mainstream or niche followings. You look hard enough in social media and some celebrity LEGO collector-builder might be sharing his latest completed set/MOC. To general fans the identities of these persons might come as a surprise. Take for instance big-name videogame designer Hideo Kojima, creator of the “Metal Gear” franchise for Konami. He’s a LEGO fan of distinction himself. And recently he tweeted about his newest set acquisition.

Brick Fanatics tells us that Hideo Kojima posted photos of a certain LEGO Ideas set he’s completed on Twitter. The tweet, dated July 16, shows nice close-ups of an Ideas Typewriter (21327). Also prominent in the background of one shot is the (retired) Ideas Grand Piano (21323). Kojima’s post only featured the photos of his set(s) and no commentary. Still, it generated quite the buzz among fans of both LEGO and Kojima. One such reply came from LEGO designer James May, part of the team that worked on Typewriter (21327).

While there’s not much to be done about the Grand Piano set, at least Ideas Typewriter is still available. At least it is on LEGO Shop for UK and most of Europe. Unfortunately, the US online store has it “temporarily out of stock” right now. That tweet’s a nice gesture from Kojima, something fans of his games from “Metal Gear” to “Death Stranding” might appreciate.

LEGO Star Wars UCS Razor Crest (75331) Sticker Sheet Pic Leak

“The Mandalorian” was the first live-action spinoff series for the “Star Wars” mega-franchise, and it didn’t disappoint. Since premiering on Disney+ streaming in 2019, “The Mandalorian” has built up a solid following. One can say it helped revitalize the “Star Wars” fandom beyond the Sequel Trilogy and various animated series. Being ripe material for merchandising couldn’t hurt either, as the LEGO Star Wars tie-ins might attest. Despite being a cool transport spaceship destroyed too soon, Din Djarin’s Razor Crest deserves its set depictions. We’ve had a full set and a Microfighter. Of course, if a LEGO Star Wars vehicle’s popular then it’s getting a UCS.

LEGO Con 2022 teased an Ultimate Collector Series version of Razor Crest from “The Mandalorian”. Said set is given the number 75331 and will launch this coming November. More excitement for this LEGO Star Wars set built up according to Promobricks thanks to a social media least. An Instagram post from lego_fulcrum this past weekend gave a tantalizing peek at the set’s insides.

To be specific, the images show sticker sheets for The Razor Crest (75331). The stickers look to apply color detailing to Din’s ship, they even come with carbonite-frozen bounties too!

Thus far, details known about LEGO Star Wars UCS Razor Crest (75331) include its piece number and European pricing. The build will comprise of 6,187 pieces, fitting for the €549.99 price ($563.33 in direct conversion). LEGO Star Wars fans can look forward to this latest Ultimate Collector Series arriving October 3. Now we’re just waiting on the LEGO product listing.

“Brick to the Future”? New TM Filed by LEGO

Sifting for news and rumors regarding LEGO can bring up some names and terms that gets the imagination hyped. Whether that hype is warranted or not won’t often be known until LEGO gives clarification later on. This news bit might catch some attention due to its sound-alike with a licensed IP getting LEGO love recently. By this we mean “Back to the Future”. The LEGO Icons Back to the Future Time Machine (10300) launched last April and quickly went out of stock. And it’s only the latest release in a short but notable line of LEGO tie-in products to “BOTF”.

So, what could this filing to the US Patent and Trademark Office by LEGO Juris A/S mean? This comes to us by way of The Brick Fan. They found a USPTO filing from LEGO, dated June 22, for trademarking “Brick to the Future”. This TM would cover “categories of toys, games and playthings” according to the registration, meaning LEGO products. At present this filing is still awaiting examination. But the question now is: could this tie to “Back to the Future”? Or is LEGO just making a pun-based title for something more their own make?

It does make for speculation. At least we can be sure that this is legit from LEGO. What does “Brick to the Future” hold for fans and collectors if it’s not “Back to the Future”-related? Another reason to watch this space with The Brick Show.

This year’s LEGO Con has officially revealed plenty of exciting sets to watch out for in the 2nd half of 2022 including the highly anticipated LEGO Minifigures Series 23 (71034).

More like being a teaser, LEGO gave us a glimpse on the design process on how a collectible minifigure is designed and made, together with a hands-on reveal of some of the colorful characters included in the upcoming CMF Series 23. Watch the reveal below.

LEGO Ideas Product Ideas A-Team Van by MOCturnal Again Reaches LEGO Ideas Review Stage (Second 2022)

If at first it doesn’t succeed, try again. So, if you’re a LEGO Ideas member and your submission fails getting support or passing review, don’t quit. Trying to determine which of the many product ideas on the platform are rehashes is a futile exercise. For instance, this new 10K-supported entry to the Second 2022 Review Stage…isn’t all-new. It previously got into the Second 2021 Review Stage late last year. Obviously, it failed to pass muster that time. But now the creator has refurbished the concept and presented it again. The fact that it maxed-support again proves there’s great potential here.

For another shot at official LEGO set-hood, here’s “The A-Team: I Love It When a Plan Comes Together”. So confident is creator MOCturnal at this build that it looks unchanged from its previous review campaign. We’re not surprised. That modified black GMC van from the legendary 1980s TV series never looked so awesome in brick-form. MOCturnal (formerly HenkvdL05) based the design on LEGO’s since-2020 8-stud width standard for vehicle sets. This has worked great for vehicles both compact enough but still be properly-scaled for minifigures. As you can see, we’re recycling images from the original submission; it’s the same anyway.

To recap, this “A-Team” van product idea has the titular A-Team foursome as minifigures, plus gear. The van also has various equipment at back, behind the seats. There’s really not much more to add. We certainly hope MOCturnal has better prospects for his creation in LEGO Ideas Second 2022 Review Stage. It counts as the 33^rd entry for this batch of ideas due for review.
