Captain Marvel’s Official Trailer Finally Revealed!

Another MCU trailer has broken the internet. Currently trending at #3 on YouTube with more than 14 million views, Captain Marvel’s official trailer has overtaken the online world in less than 12 hours. In this official trailer, the Kree heroine is thrown from space and landing on an all-too-familiar 90s pop culture symbol. In case you missed it, here’s the official trailer once again.

We don’t need the power of the Mind Stone to be sure that LEGO has something in the works for MCU 9th Phase 3 film. Since March early this year, when Marvel Entertainment released its official press release about MCU’s cosmic-powered heroine, I made a wishlist of LEGO tie-in sets that I would like to see before the film debuts on March 8, 2019. And this month, when official set images of Captain Marvel were revealed, we had a better look at Starforce, the Kree’s elite military group with which Captain Marvel is affiliated, and the Skrulls, which are the film’s supposedly main antagonists.

Similar to LEGO Marvel Superheroes Guardian of Galaxy Vol. 2 and Black Panther subthemes, we can expect that Captain Marvel will also have two or three LEGO tie-in sets under her name. Some of the things I hope are sets where we can find Captain Marvel in her various minifigure renditions, including her predominantly green Starforce uniform, another uniform iteration with the signature mask and helmet on, and the upgraded red and blue uniform as seen in the comic books.

As I mentioned before, another LEGO Marvel Superheroes Captain Marvel set will most likely include Nick Fury in his younger years as a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent and the Kree hero Captain Mar-vell (played by Jude Law). Another candidate will be a set that includes the shape-shifting Skrulls – something similar perhaps to that beachfront scene where the Skrulls have supposedly arrived.

It is somehow established that most of MCU’s recent movie trailers are also teasers for future LEGO sets. Some of these are G.O.T.G.’s battle with the Abilisk as depicted in The Milano vs. The Abilisk (76081), Black Panther’s Royal Talon Fighter Attack (76100), and Thor Ragnarok’s Thor vs. Hulk: Arena Clash (76088). Therefore, it is not a long shot to consider that any of the scenes we saw in Captain Marvel’s official trailer will find their way as an official LEGO Marvel Superheroes set early next year.

Which particular scene from Captain Marvel’s official trailer do you think will become an official LEGO set? Tell me about your wish list and share it in the comments below.

LEGO BrickHeadz Thanksgiving Turkey (40273) and Mr. and Mrs. Claus (40274) Officially Announced

Earlier this month, LEGO has revealed its first seasonal BrickHeadz set just in time for Halloween. Now that details of the LEGO BrickHeadz Witch (40272) are out, it is just a matter of time before the next seasonal themed BrickHeadz set will make its debut. Thankfully, it didn’t take long for LEGO to do that, and as a welcome surprise, they didn’t just reveal one, but two new BrickHeadz sets that we can expect until the Christmas holiday season. Earlier today, LEGO servers have been updated to include a listing both for the LEGO BrickHeadz Thanksgiving Turkey (40273) and Mr. and Mrs. Claus (40274).

Both sets are now listed at shop.LEGO.com, and will be available beginning October 1, 2018. The Thanksgiving Turkey (40273) follows a similar design from its predecessors – the set contains 114 pieces and features a turkey flanked with several accessories such as white fence pieces, carrots, a pumpkin and some vegetation.

40273 1

The Mr. and Mrs. Claus (40274) set is the first LEGO BrickHeadz seasonal set that comes as a dual-pack that comes in at 341 pieces. I personally like this build, specially considering how the designers were able to add the similar BrickHeadz accessories on each of the character even as it is bundled as a dual-pack. That cozy, Christmas vibe is perfectly captured in this all so familiar BrickHeadz format.

Find Your New Recruit Campaign in Bristol, UK Features LEGO Minifigures

We’ve seen LEGO being used in realms well outside simple play, from building scientific equipment to being used to rally charitable donations. Now, it’s finding use in the UK, particularly in the west of England, to draw public attention to a growing problem: skill gap between recruits and available work.

Certain jobs net a particular set and level of skills gained from education or training, and the sad thing is, 70% of businesses in western England – almost three-fourths – have problems hiring employees to fill vacancies because the labor pool tends to lack in skilled workers. Bristol is such a case.

Skill West, a business advice outfit, has decided to launch a public campaign in the city to increase public awareness on skills gap that results in large numbers of job vacancies due to under and non-qualification. They’re using LEGO minifigures of people in various professions as part of the “Find Your New Recruit” encouragement drive.

0_HBR_BRI_17_Lego-map-skills-west

In line with this, Skills West is scattering work-themed LEGO minifigures in famous landmarks of Bristol. Any worker or business owner who finds these LEGO minifigures can take them back to their workplaces, snap a photo of the minifigure inside their offices, and post the pictures on Twitter under hash-tag #pledgeyoursupport.

Selfies of the “Find Your New Recruit” campaign minifigures will be entered into an online raffle, with winning employees/employers to be treated to an “experience day” courtesy of Skills West and their partners. The organization head Nicky Williams states that west England is in a low-unemployment rate period similar to 1975; he says that while good, in the long run that situation “intensifies the problems local businesses are having when it comes to finding skilled people to join their team.”

Experiences being discussed for “Find Your New Recruit” include trade apprenticing, on-the-job-training for students and career fairs. Williams hopes the campaign gets local businesses to offer these activities which Skills West will then match to individual jobseekers or employment organizations.

Free LEGO Scarecrow Witch (40285) for VIP Members in October

There many good reasons for dedicated LEGO fans who shop for their sets straight from LEGO to get into their VIP loyalty program. From getting points towards rewards, exclusive early access to sought-after upcoming sets, and more besides, what’s not to like? LEGO VIP opens up a lot of possibilities. Another perk of the VIP program was the privilege to join in on annual Monthly Mini Build events that are held at certain days of each month in all LEGO Stores. As detailed in the October Store Calendar, the mini build for next month is the LEGO Scarecrow Witch (40285) set .

For two days, October 2 and 3, LEGO Stores will host the Mini Build Event for those interested in getting their own Scarecrow Witch (40285). But first, they must be members of LEGO VIP, and then they need to sign up for a slot during the event. Each day’s hosting only has 120 maximum participants, making 240 in two days.

A LEGO VIP household can register up to four children at once for the Mini Build, and each will receive a set. But as the participatory requirement states, for a child to bring his Scarecrow Witch (40285) home, he must build the set during the event by his own hand.

Registration for LEGO VIPs who want in on the October LEGO Store Mini Build event started last September 15, so it’ll be a race against time for one of those 120 slots in a day. Some LEGO Stores will have their event happen on October 9 and 10 instead, so would-be participants can check availability on the registration form itself.

New LEGO Store in Albany, NY Slated to Open in November

LEGO will always have a home with so many retail chains, toy-specific or otherwise, around the world. But sometimes, they just need space all for themselves and their wide variety of products. That’s what the branded LEGO Stores are for, and they’ve been popping up all over the US lately. And so there is yet one more LEGO Store coming stateside, and it’ll be at the Crossgates Mall in the Guilderland suburb of Albany, New York. An official press release for the new LEGO Store in Albany promises all the familiar friendly features that defines the latest wave of the company’s branded stores.

Aside from the expected consumer play areas and interior design that’s great for kids, the Albany LEGO Store will have the now-standard “Pick & Build Wall”, the “Living Room” interaction area, and the circumferential “Brand Ribbon” that showcases already-built LEGO models interspersed with snippets of brand history and LEGO trivia.

Future guests will enjoy being able to get first crack at new LEGO sets being available right at the release dates, from early-age Duplo to licensed franchises to hot-selling lines like Ninjago, City and Friends. The LEGO Store in Albany at the Crossroads Mall will open in November, near simultaneously with other soon-to-come US stores like in Louisiana and South Carolina.

Who Needs Card Boards When You Have These Custom LEGO Nintendo Labo

Here’s a great MOC story and an excellent example of unintentional (but awesome) cross-brand interaction. Fans of video games, particularly of Nintendo, would know that their Switch console has been making waves with its potential for multi-functional abilities. This is reflected in their Labo gaming/toy-construction platform, one of its best-selling points. Nintendo Labo kits consist of cardboard patterns that are cut out, folded and assembled into “Toy-Con” components that attach to the Switch unit and controllers to create new gameplay experiences with compatible software. It’s innovative and fun, but cardboard isn’t a notably sturdy material for long-term gaming. But what if there’s an alternative for it? Why not a custom LEGO Nintendo Labo?

There is, if you ask industrial designer and AFOL Vimal Patel (vmln8r on YouTube). He’s taken LEGO Technic pieces and assembled them into more durable alternatives for the default cardboard constructs of Nintendo’s Labo kits for the Switch. His first attempts in April were a kickstand and steering wheel; now he’s back with more builds.

A new YouTube video put up by Patel demonstrates his latest custom LEGO Nintendo Labo components used instead of the Nintendo Labo’s cardboard Toy-Cons. First he demonstrates more Switch unit grips; then we go to his piano alternative (with conventional LEGO pieces mixed in the Technic), a new motorcycle handlebar racing controller, and a sturdy fishing rod for the corresponding Labo fishing game.

Why do the LEGO pieces work? That’s because regardless of the materials used for the Toy-Con attachments, they only need the kit-included reflective tapes placed on the areas indicated by the building instructions so that the Switch infrared sensors can detect them. For more on vmln8r’s LEGO Technic developments for Nintendo Labo, you can also visit his personal website here.

Second LEGOLAND China Theme Park and Resort to Open in 2022

It’s no secret that The LEGO Group has been investing quite a lot lately in Asia: from opening the world’s largest LEGO Flagship Store in the heart of Shanghai, to their exciting partnership with online gaming platform Tencent Games, LEGO is now expanding its horizons in the Chinese region by planning out the details of its second LEGOLAND China theme park in the next four years.

Soon to be located in Sanya in the Island of Hainan, this second LEGOLAND China theme park will be the 5th LEGOLAND located in Asia after those from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Shanghai, China. Construction for LEGOLAND Hainan will begin in 2020 and once finished, will offer a one-of-a-kind LEGO experience for the entire family. LEGOLAND Hainan is also expected to take advantage of the booming tourism in the region considering that the island takes pride for its beautiful beach front and scenery. Here’s a rough Google translation of the official press release originally published in Chinese.

“On the afternoon of September 6, Hainan Provincial Governor Shen Xiaoming, Sanya Municipal Party Committee Secretary Yan Chaojun, Sanya Mayor A Dong, Chinese Media Group Chairman and CEO Li Ruigang, Vice President Xie Li, and Merlin Group Asia Project General Manager Ray Dubowa, in the Beijing Hotel on the cooperation and landing of the “LEGOLAND” project in Sanya, launched a tripartite dialogue and exchange.

According to the agreement, Chinese Culture and the Merlin Group will jointly develop a large outdoor family entertainment theme park, LEGOLAND, in Sanya. The two sides will combine the theme elements of LEGO bricks and the tropical atmosphere of Sanya to create a world-class integrated tourist resort featuring water parks. For families of children ageds 2-12, the park offers a variety of fun entertainment experiences and interactive puzzle activities that allow each child to create their own world in play. Among them, the mini-city built by thousands of LEGO bricks not only reflects the Chinese elements and Sanya scenery, but also is a wonderful stage to stimulate children’s imagination and wisdom. LEGOLAND Sanya Resort has an immersive parent-child interaction experience to create a family holiday destination based in China and radiating Southeast Asia.”

LEGOLAND Windsor Announces Brick or Treat Halloween Events

Last week, the US LEGOLAND theme park resorts and Discovery Centers began announcing their respective schedules for Brick or Treat, their annual afternoon-evening Halloween events extravaganza for October and November (with some starting late September too). Now, other LEGOLAND locations are reporting their schedules, such as Windsor in the UK.

Every LEGOLAND park has several activities and shows in common during Brick or Treat, and it’s the unique ones to every location that makes each celebration stand out. For LEGOLAND Windsor, one of them is the refurbishing of one of their oldest ride attractions, Hill Train, into the Haunted Hill Train that will take its passengers through the Enchanted Forest.

The Forest itself will serve as a venue for more Halloween-themed fun, with booths for building LEGO pumpkins, brick mosaics and good old coloring activities for the young ones. There’s also a Brick or Treat Trail mystery-style treasure hunt that sends its participants around the park searching for missing potion ingredients and a chance to win a special Halloween prize.

But if that’s too much walking for you, then why not hang out at Frankie’s Monster Disco? It’s only for the Brick or Treat period at the Miniland area, where guests can boogeyman-boogie with their hosts Frankie, Orange Brick and Lord Vampyre. Halloween costume contests will be going on too.

For LEGOLAND Windsor guests staying at the Hotel, they’ll have their own unique experience with Ollie’s Campfire Stories. Lots of food and drinks get Halloween makeovers as well. Now’s no better time to go to LEGOLAND Windsor Resort and get your pants scared off in a totally fun way. Check out their official website for more details and ticket booking.
